President Dear friends This AGM Report, as always, marks the end of this season and the beginning of another. When thinking back over the past season, we are very proud of the accomplishments of our members, having competed at all levels of Surf Life Saving, completed our patrol obligation and also renewing and gaining new awards, therefore bettering themselves and our Club.

This season did start off a bit shaky, with us having difficulty filling some positions on the Committee.

However, thankfully during the season some Club Members put their hands up which helped the committee greatly.

I would like to thank our Patrolling Members for their efforts this year, making our magnificent beach a safe place for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

Congratulations to all members who achieved awards and competed for our club. I would like to acknowledge our members who have assisted the State with its patrolling duties and also our officials who gave up their time so our members could compete throughout the year. Another group of our members who do not go unrecognised, are our Coaches and Trainers who are at the Club early hours of the morning and after work, assisting us to become better competitors and Life Savers – Thank You. There are a few people that we should acknowledge and thank.

You come to realise that Aldinga Bay Surf Life Saving Club is now a 365 days a year operation, and therefore it is imperative that many people are needed to help and support our club in order to provide this vital and necessary service of Surf Life Saving.

Vice President I would like to start by thanking all you wonderful volunteers for all your efforts throughout the season. Well done!

This season I have started up a Social Membership. This type of membership is a great way to bring in more people who wish to also support the Club. It has taken a few months for this membership to start taking off but am now finding it is starting to build in momentum.

People who are joining are offering their services to help out behind the bar and other areas of the fundraising side of the Club. Which is fantastic the more people we can get to help around the Club the easier it is on everyone.

would be great to see you there and maybe give a hand by just bringing a few glasses to the bar or putting some chairs and tables away at the end of the day. It would be greatly appreciated by the few that run these days as many hands make light work.

On Friday nights it is great to see quite a few of these members gather at the bar for a members draw and a drink or two while having some quality catch up time. This type of membership will take a little while to get up and running properly as the Club has not offered something like this for some time. But with the keen members we already have and the interest it is now creating I am sure, as each season passes, it will become more successful. You may even want to invite some of your friends and family to join our social club!

Lazy Sundays this year have been very successful for the Club. It has been fantastic to see the public interest it has created at the Club and they are returning for the next one. I have been organising the bands this year and so far so good people are liking my taste in music! I hate to say it but I have now fallen into that “age bracket�.

These Sundays are a great fundraiser for the Club so if you have any spare time on these Sundays it

Secretary It has been quite a year behind the scenes on the management committee. We welcomed Dan Pain in his role as Junior Chair and Richard Maxwell taking up the treasurer’s position.

Unfortunately we had to farewell Richard as his work commitments grew. After a couple of months of having Hibby getting grumpy as he battled to cover the treasurer’s role along with his presidential responsibilities (along with the perennially vacant house manager position - the club owes a lot to Paul keeping things going), we gratefully welcomed Brendon Cocks to the team. Brendon has brought to us a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and focus from his time with NSW sporting clubs and we are most fortunate to have him on board.

Along with these changes, we unfortunately farewelled Sandie and Adrian Holmes from their tireless work in keeping the bar running. It has been great to have Jeanette and Maurice Pitt stepping up in to the role, along with assisting in taking care of some of the odd jobs around the club. The bar plays a key role in funding the running of the club, so big thanks to everyone who has helped behind and in front of the bar!

Also a big thanks to Meg Molenaar and her team of eager volunteers, stepping up and coordinating the Beach Rd BBQs!!

The collective skills and experience of the management committee, both of within Surf Lifesaving and of external business and community acumen sees the club well placed

as we move forward. Reviewing the business plans of the club going forward in preparation for progressing building plans is well underway.

However committee members are stretched as we seek to spread the load of uncovered key roles, such as house manager and publicity officer, along with a number of unfilled support officer positions. As we look ahead to a new season in 2015/16, we would ask members to once again consider seriously how they might be able to give of their tremendous skill and knowledge base to the running of the club to help build a strong future in Aldinga Bay. Club Captain Surf Life saving has come a long way since it was formed in 1907. Here are some facts and figures; Today, there are over 166,000 members in Australia.

There are over 62,000 nippers.

Between us all, we manage around 1.4 million volunteer hours each season, performing over 11,000 rescues, and avoiding countless more with over 900,000 preventative actions.

The chances are, if you are reading this, then you are one of the members mentioned above. It has been said before, but thank you to each and every one of you. The community is indebted to you, you are a great person. And not just the patrolling members on the beach, the families, the fundraisers – all of you.

It has been a good season – it has been incident free, and that is a testament to the vigilance and the preventative actions that we have done. We have grown as a club too, not just in numbers, but I believe in quality also this year – a combination of great people being well trained. We need to continue our growth – and competition is a particular area we need to concentrate on to do this.

We currently have a good group of keen, active young athletes in the club, it’s up to all of us to help and encourage these people to develop and grow. We will all be rewarded if we can do that.

This year, we also have to acknowledge the achievements of Ashley Sanders. Ashley has received a Meritous Conduct award for his part in a rescue whilst on duty in the WestPac 1 helicopter. I was fortunate to be part of the same Bronze squad as Ashley, and it certainly demonstrates that qualifying for your Bronze Medallion can be a stepping stone to great achievement – well done Ash! I enjoy being a Surf Lifesaver, being part of a great Australian tradition. I hope that you enjoy it, and find it as rewarding as I do – now and in the future.

Vice Captain of Patrols As always, the first thing we must do is thank everyone who has patrolled, water covered, trained, been an Official, been on the committee…., the list goes on. The whole thing wouldn’t happen without everyone doing their part.

The statistics speak for themselves – it’s been a successful season. I think our current group of patrolling members is as good as any I have seen, a great mix of young and not–so–young, experienced helping the inexperienced.

I believe one of the biggest improvements of late has been with the effective use of Facebook – it used to be an often heard gripe that communication could be improved. Well it certainly has improved, and probably the biggest effect is that the ability to find a patrol sub is now much easier. Being on a patrol that is down on numbers can make a fun afternoon a chore – finding a sub makes a big difference to your patrol mates, and I certainly urge everyone to do their best, and make good use of the social media now available.

This season has been a long one, and as well as the normal patrol duties, we have requested your time also for extra events such as the Silver Sands Triathlon. The response has been terrific, thank you to everyone who helped and gave their time generously.

Finally, I have to thank Helen and the rest of my family for allowing me to spend so much time at the beach.

What does 100% Patrol Attendance represent?

Volunteer Patrolling Members who attend all of their rostered patrols during the season, are recognised for 100% attendance. Patrolling members who organise a sub for a patrol (acting in accordance with the rules), doesn’t mean that they did not fulfil their patrol obligations.

However, as per the requirements of Surfguard, they are not reported as having 100% attendance.

Training Officer Well it’s been another busy year of training from young and old.

This year the Bronze/SRC squad was one of our largest for a while, with 15 in total.

It was great to share this training role with Scott Goldie to lighten the work load.

7 SRC recipients - 5 coming through the Junior ranks and 2 joining in their first year of life saving.

Lucy Raper, Skye Fisher, Amy Powell,Courtney Smith, Finnegan Macdonald-Hall, Sebastian Dean and Jamie Culross.

Scott is qualified for Bronze/SRC assessing and Sven, with IRB, still has a couple of assessments to finish this qualification.

Meg Molenaar and Clive Bennett have completed their Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Once again thanks to Meg Molenaar, Clive Bennett, Ashley Sanders, Scott Axton, Scott Goldie for their assistance in training and assessing, and Ray Tomlinson for my many calls to change or enter members details on surf guard. Also those that have helped with water cover.

Competition Officer Congratulations to all Junior and Senior competitors. To have 22 junior competitors at the Junior State Titles this season was a terrific achievement. Well done to Dan Pain and the Junior Committee.

Furthermore, to have 3 surf boat crews at the Masters State Titles and 2 at the Senior State Titles, is a tremendous achievement.

Congratulations to Ray Tomlinson on his first year as a Masters competitor and his fellow competitors, Bryan Axton, Mark Rothwell and Sven Molenaar.

IRB competition, under the direction of Scott Axton is now in full swing and we wish all the competitors good luck.

I feel that we have come of age to have all of our coaches meet and create a surf sports committee to improve the role of coaches within our club. This is designed to create and improve competitive coaching skills, knowledge and training, and creates opportunities to specialise in the different disciplines to give all our competitors a better start in their chosen fields.

A big thank you to our officials Bryan Axton, Paul Hibbird and Peter Symons, without them we cannot compete.

IRB Captain The season was underway early with the continuation of our IRB Drivers squad. The 4 person squad were put through the skills that are required both at Aldinga and Goolwa beach and progressed quickly and efficiently, achieving their Silver medallion. Congratulations to Benn Thomas, Scott Goldie, Molly Haigh, and Kristen Rothwell. Very welcome additions to our patrolling ranks.

Our IRB patrolling group assisted the club from early October right through till late April. A huge thanks to all those members who go above and beyond their other duties and help with extra water cover rosters and patrolling, it is very much appreciated.

The Aldinga IRB team went from strength to strength with the addition of some more competitors allowing us to compete in U23, Open and Masters Divisions of the competition. The year saw us travel to Robe, SA for the Southern States Challenge (SA vs Vic) where on a clear winter’s weekend SA took home the Title for 2014. Our next goal was State Titles which was held at Christies Beach in rough 2/3 foot swell, this was an event for us to show case our skill and saw Aldinga Bay very successful in most races they entered. Our Highlight was winning 3 Gold Medals in the Men’s Open Division, a great achievement!

We had 4 members of Aldinga Bay represent in the State team competition held on the Friday of National Titles, Congratulations to Euan Bragg, Daniel Ferguson, Emma Fitzpatrick and Molly Haigh on their achievement.

National Titles was held at Kingscliff Beach, NSW. This carnival saw very big surf and tricky conditions to contend with. Both our male and female teams did a great job progressing through the rounds to the early finals, but unfortunately our run was stopped at the Semi Final stage, still

a great effort to still be racing very competitively, deep into day three of competition.

Our ongoing success goes hand in hand with the club’s support without that we could not reach our goals.

Boat Captain As a club we had 3 crews competing this season.

The 200yrs female crew comprised of Wilma Mace, Sally Cornish, Cheryl Dykes, Sally Williams and sweep Peter Symons.

The females competed throughout the season in the Open Female. The first carnival was held in Robe, followed by several carnivals during the season, finishing in the Masters State Titles with a Silver Medal.

Seadragons, comprised of Andrew Meyer, Scott Goldie, Michael Madeley, Darryl Dykes and sweep Peter Symons. The guys did not have a good preseason and had disruptive training throughout the season.

20 years of Surf Boats! Congratulations to Darryl Dykes and Peter Symons who have competed in more than 180 carnivals and over 2800 hours in the surf boat plus their personal training in the gym. A huge commitment to the sport!

To all of our surf boat competitors I wish you good luck for the future and see you next season.

Keith’s crew comprised of Graham Lee, Wayne Rowlands, John Culross, Brian Gray and sweep Keith Mills.

The goal was to compete at the Aussie Titles but due to the results throughout the season, decided not to attend and finished with a Silver Medal in the Masters State Titles 180yrs male. Also got through to the finals in the State Titles Reserves.

Our future goal is to compete at the Australian Open in NSW next season (Masters & Reserves).

Keith’s crew again had a disruptive year. These guys have entered their 2nd season with noticeable improvement. We created history for Aldinga Bay by having 2 male 180yr Masters crews in the finals. It was great to see. Hopefully the guys will stay together to become a stronger crew for the next season.

Junior Yearbook Season 2014/15 Junior Chairperson’s Report What a fantastic and successful season in the Nipper area of the Aldinga Bay SLSC! Firstly I’d like to thank everyone who made our season so successful. The smooth running of Juniors certainly is not down to chance or luck, but by careful planning and the good organisation of all of the people involved on the front line, and behind the scenes.

This season the Junior Committee set out to achieve several goals, most of which I believe we succeeded in.

Improve the professionalism, compliance and image of Aldinga Bay SLSC Junior area at both State and Club Executive level • Increased attendance at State run Youth Development Panel meetings • Attained Age Group Leader training certification for all age group leaders • Establish Nippersafe and National Police Clearance Certification for all members involved with

the running of junior activities • Maintain Nippersafe Club Reporting Officers – Jodie Pain, Ashley Sanders, Ray Tomlinson &

Simon Rothwell.

• Implement newly created Child Safe Officer position in line with State Centre requirements –

yet to be done. Will be addressed by introduction of new Constitution 2015.

Increase member participation rates in junior activities

Our numbers show a slight increase in junior members from season 2013/14 from 107 up to 117 registered for the season. We did experience a reasonably high drop out rate from last season, however we were bolstered by new memberships across most of the age groups.

Transfer of new members from other competing clubs was great, and we hope that these new members and their families have enjoyed the move.

We aim to increase our retention rates, and seek input and feedback from our junior parents via the Survey Monkey tool loaded on our club Face Book page 3.

Increase participation rates in surf sports

Carnival attendance grew this year with a remarkable 32 kids competing at junior carnivals, 25 kids attending junior state titles qualifying at Port Noarlunga, with 22 kids making it through to compete at the junior state titles weekend held at Port Elliott.

We are still a long way off the larger clubs on both the Metropolitan Coast and our neighbours on the Mid Coast, however the manner in which our kids competed was inspirational, with many of the kids competing at a very high level.

At Junior State Titles we had many final appearances, several kids made it down to the final 6, claiming valuable championship points, and we experienced success in the U14 Girls’ Beach Sprint with Courtney Smith claiming a Silver medal. Well done to Courtney and to all of the Aldinga Nippers who represented our club so well.

4.

Increase parent participation / assistance in junior and club activities

A volunteer organisation such as ours relies heavily on the support of its members in both active patrolling activities, junior water cover and basic fundraising efforts such as helping out with sausage sizzles, the Christies Beach market barbecues, an occasional shift behind the bar and general assistance in the running of the Saturday sessions.

Thank you so much to those junior parents who have generously donated their time to support these initiatives, however this is one area where we can and need to improve.

Please don’t think that you are unable to help because you are not a life saver. Our Junior area accounts for approximately 2/3 of the total club membership, and there is always somewhere that we need your help.

Junior Development Camps – Encounter Conference Centre 24/25 April 2015 At the end of this season we had the opportunity to select 4 junior members to attend the SLSSA run Youth Development Camps held at Victor Harbour. In recognition of their positive attitude towards junior activities, training sessions and overall club & team spirit the following kids were selected to attend.

U12/13 camp – Ben Meyer & Regan Hughes U14 camp – Lucy Raper & Skye Fisher Camp Activities included: Lifesaving Pathways, Youth Development and YEP Presentation, Ecosurf & Snorkeling, Surfing, Body Boarding, Basham Reserve Indigenous Trail, Port Elliot Activities, Surf Volley, Stand Up Paddling, Kayaking, First Aid, Pool Competition, Teamwork, Leadership and more…

I trust that this was a great experience for these kids, and I hope that the skills learned will be further developed for future pathways in surf life saving at our club.

Junior Age Group Champions Congratulations to all of our age group champions. Our formula for calculating age group champions was pushed to its limits this season. With such tight competition across all age groups we ended up in several ties on points. Rather than place subjective criteria for only one trophy winner, the trophy committee elected to present dual champions in some age groups.

No doubt all will agree that the trophies were well deserved, with only 1 or 2 points separating first second and third in some age groups!

Iron Man & Diamond Lady Our annual Iron Man and Diamond Lady event was contested by a record number of competitors this season with 15 kids putting their feet on the start line. For the first time we opened the eligible age groups allowing several younger members who were capable of safely completing the course to compete – under close water cover supervision of course.

Congratulations to Finnegan MacDonald-Hall and Lucy Raper for taking out the 2015 Iron Man and Diamond Lady trophies respectively.

Moving on in Surf Life Saving – Surf Rescue Certificates Congratulations to the Under 14’s who have completed their surf rescue certificate, allowing them to move on into senior ranks as a Cadet, and become involved in active patrolling of our beach.

Meritorious Service

ABSLSC Member Ashley Sanders was honoured with the SA Emergency Services Medal, for his volunteer work on the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helipcopter Crew. The Medal is recognition for the extraordinary dedication to his (volunteer) role and a proven willingness to go above and beyond daily duties.

ABSLSC President, Paul Hibbird received the Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service, presented by local Member for Kaurna, Chris Picton MP.

Treasurer It is with pleasure that I present the Treasurer’s Report for the 2014-2015 season.

I would firstly like to thank Rebecca Armstrong, Paul Hibbird and Malcolm Dean for assisting in my transition to club treasurer and the committee for welcoming my family to the Aldinga community. It is a pleasure to be associated with the club.

The committee would like to thank the ongoing support of its many sponsors. We look forward to continuing and growing our relationship. We would also like to acknowledge the continued financial support of Mrs Eatts. It is donations such as these that contribute to the financial stability of our club. The committee would also like to acknowledge Surf Life Saving Australia, Surf Life Saving South Australia and the City of Onkaparinga for their ongoing financial support.

There have been no major asset purchases this year except for a new motor for one of the IRB’s.

The club will continue to financially support junior development in Surf lifesaving and swimming coaching. I would personally like to thank Bryan Axton and Mark Rothwell for the unconditional time they spend on Thursday nights teaching our future Lifesavers correct swimming technique.

The club will also continue to financially support our senior IRB, Boating and Surf teams at local, state and national level.

Maurice and Jeanette Pitt have made a huge contribution to the club by taking over the management of the bar. They organise the rosters for Friday nights and Lazy Sundays. They look for the best specials on beer a wine and are in continuous communication with our winery sponsors. They keep the fridges full and the money rolling in. The Bar contributed more than $30k in revenue to the club. I would also like to thank the many volunteers that man the bar on these days and nights. All of your efforts are greatly appreciated.

The Club is now at an interesting crossroad financially with the opportunity to build a new clubhouse. Whilst the opportunity is exciting it means the club may have to borrow money to do the rebuild. The club will need to contribute 11% of the overall cost of the project with the Government of South Australia and the City of Onkaparinga contributing the remainder. Whilst a number of proposals have been presented to the committee we are yet to agree on a final concept or timeframe for this project. It is imperative the club enters this project in the strongest possible financial position.

The committee is looking at a number of opportunities to increase cash flow into the club.

We will begin trading on Saturday nights in the near future. The sponsorship committee is hard at work organising for the 2015/16 season. I believe sponsorship is the single greatest opportunity our club has. The club continues to build its savings with another $20K transferred to our term deposits. We now have approximately $120K in term deposits with Bendigo and ANZ banks. The committee will continue to look at other financial opportunities as they arise.

On closing I would like to thank all members of the Junior & Senior committees as well as the many members that volunteer their time to aid the financially stability of our Club.
