From the acclaimed creator of the Chirri & Chirra books, Kaya Doi, comes this absolutely adorable book about Tama the cat and her baby sister.

A new baby has just arrived at Tama the cat’s house, and Tama has never seen a baby before! At first, Tama finds the baby adorable. But when the baby starts fussing and making noise, it begins to wear Tama down a bit. All the same, their relationship has been established, and as Tama spends more and more time playing with and learning about the baby, she comes to realize that not only is the baby—with her sweet smile—truly delightful, she is also her true little sister! And no matter how old the baby begins to grow—becoming two, three, four, five, and six—and though she outstrips Tama in size and can now hold Tama in her lap, she'll always be Tama the cat’s little sister!

I Forgot How to Sleep

WORDS & PICTURES BY

A love song to bedtime books that is also laugh–out–loud funny, while still promising to leave little ones cozy and sleepy—even with the giggles it will bring.

This delightful picture book starts with a very big—and very relatable—problem: No matter how hard she tries, our protagonist just can’t seem to fall asleep. Could she have skipped a step in her bedtime routine? Just in case, it’s best to do it all over again! So she brushes her teeth, puts on her pajamas, and says good night to Daddy. But no luck—she still can’t get to sleep! So she ventures outside, where she meets a very sleepy bear who shares her same problem. To help him, she runs inside for a book to read him a bedtime story. In the blink of an eye, the bear is snoring away, and the girl suddenly gets it. That’s it! She forgot to have her dad read her a bedtime story. And so, it’s back to the house, back to her dad, back to bed, and finally . . . to sleep! Children and parents alike will love this story that celebrates the magic of bedtime stories shared between a parent and child.

In Bruno Zocca’s creative world, anything goes. His zany and fanciful illustrations are populated with delightful characters and creatures who live in a parallel universe where the laws of nature don’t seem to exist. His delicate ink line drawings are beautifully contrasted with flat digital colors, giving them a retro and timeless look and feel. Zocca was born in Verona, studied illustration and graphic design at ISIA in Urbino, and now lives and works in Bologna. In 2014, his works were selected at the Illustrators Exhibition of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, where he also won the Ars In Fabula Grant Award. His illustrations for Mio Nonno Gigante (My Giant Grandpa), written by Davide Calì, won the 2019 Premio Letteratura Ragazzi Award. He is the author–illustrator of E se fossi qualcosa’altro (What If I Were Something Else?), a 2024 Winner of the Premio Bettoni for Best Picture Book, and was a Sendak Fellow in 2023. The Trolls of the Turkey River

BY

Legendary illustrator Arthur Geisert returns with the final installment in his Clayton County trilogy—this time imagining how the Turkey River trolls and townspeople must come together to save their shared home from flooding

The trolls of the Turkey River live underground in hollows they call homes. They are fun loving and communal, but also mischief–makers who sometimes go too far! From sowing corn that sprouts up through the cracks in the pavement to making Main Street as slippery as an ice–skating rink, there’s nothing more fun for a troll than pranking the townspeople. But when the waters of the Turkey River start to rise and threaten to flood, the trolls rush to warn the townspeople. If there’s any hope of averting disaster and saving the place they both call home, the trolls and townspeople must put aside their differences and work together!

Ahana Ganguly is an editor, writer, and multimedia artist, and they do editorial work for Enchanted Lion. They love stories and images that are very big or very small. Geisert, who grew up in Los Angeles and learned to etch at the Otis Art Institute, has lived in Iowa for most of his adult life. He currently lives on the banks of the Turkey River in Elkader, Iowa.

Odds and Ends

WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED BY MAIJA HURME, TRANSLATED FROM FINNISH BY MIA SPANGENBERG

A thoughtful, imaginative child decides to make a scrapbook of "lasts" instead of "firsts," inviting readers to think about what they hold onto and collect, in this charmingly drawn import from Finland!

Some people collect pens, shells, or stamps. Others collect friends, trips, or world records. This picture book shares one girl’s unusual collection: a collection of lasts. With a feel for the poignant, the bittersweet, and the odd, an observant, emotionally astute child shares the whimsical, eccentric, and touching lasts she has collected, from the last day cold enough for a wool cap, to the last anxious breath before a high dive, to the last person in her class to lose a tooth, to the last piece of chocolate, to the last words of a whole life. Beautifully illustrated in pencil and watercolor, this is an exploration of lasts that might set something new in motion—or might bring finality. These involve feelings of fear, sadness, contentment, longing, and happiness, making for a wistful picture book in which a young girl’s collection of last moments is depicted with a warm touch. Odds and Ends is a collection of memories which invites open discussion of each reader’s personal lasts.

Maija Hurme is an illustrator, writer, and graphic designer who spends half of her time working with children’s literature and illustrations. Hurme, who lives in Helsinki, Finland, has illustrated many books for children. Her books have been nominated for the Nordic Council’s Children’s Literature Prize, the Finlandia Junior Prize, and the Arvid Lydecken Prize. She likes to find inspiration for her stories in her own and others’ children; nature; small, strange objects; and the environment. Mia Spangenberg holds a PhD in Scandinavian studies from the University of Washington, with a focus on Finnish literature and cultural studies. She is a 2017 graduate of the Finnish to English literary translation mentorship program organized by FILI, Finland’s literary organization. Spangenberg is passionate about championing international children’s literature and writes articles for WorldKidLit about picture books from around the world.

The Yellow Hats

WRITTEN, ILLUSTRATED, & TRANS. FROM GREEK BY

KELLY MATATHIA-COVO

Inspired by the Holocaust but universally resonant, this powerful animal fable is a testament to human courage—even in the darkest of times

Families of sheep, chicken, rabbits, and mice all live together happily in a beautiful green meadow . . . until they hear whispers of a group of wild things coming from the snowy mountains for the sheep. Is it because of their soft coats? Or for their grassy land? Nobody knows. But with the threat of violence hanging over the animal community, the happiness that once pervaded life on the meadow is soon replaced by unease and fear.

One fateful night, the whisperings come true—the wild things descend from the mountain and round up all the sheep. Wary of what is happening, Papa Sheep sends out an SOS to his old friend Mr. Hare, who, at great risk to his personal safety, comes to their rescue. Then, once the sheep are safely ensconced in Mr. Hare’s island community, all of the inhabitants work together to protect them until the danger has passed. Within that hospitality, we see the trust and decency that are essential if we are to live together and thrive.

This powerful fable is based on author Kelly Matathia–Covo’s own family’s story of surviving the Holocaust. An introductory author’s note provides historical context that offers insights relevant to our contemporary times.

Kelly Matathia–Covo lives and works in Athens, Greece. She has illustrated more than 20 children’s books, many of which have received awards. Firm in her belief that storytelling and picture books always find a way to communicate even the most difficult subjects, she wrote and illustrated The Yellow Hats, which was awarded Best Picture Book by IBBY Greece in 2018, and in 2019 was shortlisted for the Greek National Children’s Book Award. Matathia–Covo was Greece’s 2024 nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in illustration.

Gravity and Other Substances

WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED BY DANIEL

FROM SPANISH BY PABLO

Internationally recognized Colombian artist Daniel Liévano uses visual notations to explore philosophical ideas in Gravity & Other Substances, a picture book for teens and adults

Through various media, artist Daniel Liévano has dedicated himself to exploring the relationship between abstraction and storytelling. Here, he takes up happiness, truth, memories, reality, dreams, and gravity. In many ways, these concepts shape the rhythms, experiences, and facts of human life. Conceiving of them as substances, Liévano explores them as if they were tangible, solid presences in our lives. In doing so, he makes happiness subject to gravity and memory both molecular and embodied. The exploration that makes up Gravity & Other Substances is published under Unruly, Enchanted Lion’s imprint of category–defying picture books for teens and adults.

Daniel Liévano lives and works in his hometown of Bogotá, Colombia. Most of his time is devoted to developing highly conceptual images that accompany articles in publications such as The New Yorker, the Washington Post, the U.K.'s Sunday Times, and the Boston Globe. His work has received numerous recognitions, including the Gold Medal from the New York Society of Illustrators and the top prize in the U.K. Association of Illustrator's World Illustration Awards. Eugenia Mello is an illustrator, author, and art director from Buenos Aires, Argentina, based in Brooklyn, New York. She focuses on picture books and storytelling through rhythm, movement, and color. Her work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, American Illustration, and the Art Directors Club (ADC) of New York. She teaches illustration at the School of Visual Arts and Queens College. Pablo Román is a translator and editor based in Choachi, Colombia. After obtaining a degree in philosophy and history, he began his work as a translator and interpreter, translating two English books into Spanish–Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things (1904) written by Lafcadio Hearn, and the unforgettable 14th–century mystical treatise The Cloud of Unknowing written by an anonymous English monk.

SELLING POINTS

A VISUAL EXCURSION INTO LIFE’S BIG QUESTIONS: Here, in sparse poetic lines and images, Daniel Liévano explores concepts that are central to the human experience, while bringing in surprising insights from science (relativity, gravity, linguistics, neuroscience) and art (exploring metaphors visually as well as through lyrical language).

VISUAL BOOKS FOR TEENS & ADULTS: Publishing under Unruly, Enchanted Lion’s category–defying imprint of picture books intended for teens and adults. Liévano’s art is gorgeously woven together with his philosophical musings, taking the reader on a journey that is evocative and profound.

STRONG APPEAL FOR ART MUSEUMS & DESIGN ENTHUSIASTS: With color–stained edges, bold design, and rough–cut binding board, this is a gorgeous art object to keep and to give. In 2020, this book was awarded the gold medal in the book category by the Society of Illustrators in New York. Liévano is a master of the beautiful book, having illustrated four of Haruki Murakami’s novels, including Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore, for the Folio Society, and this book will be no exception.
