SPRING 2026

The Little Prince by Joann Sfar © Gallimard Jeunesse, 2008
New Season, New Stories
SelfMadeHero’s Spring list is an eclectic and stimulating quintet of new graphic novels from UK, French, and German creators. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved classic The Little Prince is reimagined by France’s eminent comics creator Joann Sfar in this 80th anniversary edition (March 2026). In February, comics creator ILYA brings us Romo the WolfBoy, a new series set at Blimey O’Riley’s Travelling Circus where a stagehand and a strange, wild boy find themselves investigating a paranormal mystery. Both titles continue our range of graphic novels for younger readers.
Moving on to more serious real-life subjects for adults, Barbara Yelin’s Emmie Arbel: The Colour of Memory – the haunting testimony of a Holocaust survivor – sees its release in early 2026, followed in May by Noisy Valley, Myfanwy Tristram’s stirring work of graphic journalism exploring the right to protest, told by people who raised their voices and demanded to be heard.
Finally, on a lighter note, Kay Medaglia, the creator of the popular One Year Wiser series, is back with Comic Therapy, a new collection of powerful inspirational meditations to lift our spirits and keep us all sane, centred, and cheerful.

“Reinhard Kleist, master graphic novelist and myth-maker has – yet again – blown apart the conventions of the graphic novel by concocting a terrifying conflation of Cave songs, biographical half-truths and complete fabulations and creating a complex, chilling and completely bizarre journey into Cave World. Closer to the truth than any biography, that’s for sure! But for the record, I never killed Elisa Day.” — Nick Cave

Noisy Valley
THE ART OF PROTEST
■ BY MYFANWY TRISTRAM

“It’s about what ordinary people do, because what we do... is quite extraordinary.”
PA graphic novel exploring the right to protest, told by people who raised their voices and demanded to be heard.

rotest matters, and never more so than today – and yet our rights around dissent have been eroded in law. Noisy Valley is a beautifully illustrated work of graphic nonfiction exploring the importance of protest, and what it can achieve, through the voices of one vibrant community.
In every neighbourhood there are the activists, the ones who raise their voices. Myfanwy Tristram visited the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, inviting local people to recount their memories of the times they’d refused to take things lying down. Noisy Valley is the result: a graphic retelling of protests both past and present.
The area is best known for the miners’ strikes of the 80s, (and their support from the LGBT movement as documented in the film Pride) but the spirit of dissent runs deeply whenever there is injustice. These stories tell how communities and individuals pushed back on a landfill site that poisoned local streams, a waste processing plant that destroyed an area of natural beauty, sexism in the workplace and the closure of the local hospital. We dip into the historic Aldermaston marches and the Greenham women’s peace camp too.
Noisy Valley is a testament to protestors who – whatever the political climate – have believed in their power to get things changed.
Myfanwy Tristram is a graphic novelist based in Brighton, UK, whose work focuses on activism and social history. Her comics have been shortlisted for several awards. In 2017, Myf co-ordinated and published Draw the Line, depicting more than 100 simple actions to help change the world. Noisy Valley was shortlisted for the UK’s prestigious First Graphic Novel Award.

eet the original Boy Who Fell to Earth. Stranded in the Sahara Desert, an aircraft pilot meets a strange little boy who tells him of his journey from another world. The Little Prince, by the French writer, illustrator, and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was written and published during the Second World War, to immediate acclaim, and its classic status has been embraced ever since. Whether as a children’s fairy tale or an existentialist fable, religious parable or political allegory, the “secret treasure” of its complex simplicity has only unfolded further truths over the years, like the petals of the precious flower of friendship it celebrates. Vividly realized here, for yet another new generation, by the award-winning graphic novelist Joann Sfar, this stunning adaptation celebrates the 80th anniversary of its French edition, and confirms its wisdom of ages: that life (and love) can be hard; that “grown-ups are very strange”; and that our precious planet is intrinsic with our universal Nature. De Saint-Exupéry’s aircraft disappeared in the wartime skies over the Mediterranean in July 1944, and his death has remained a mystery ever since. “The only reason to speak in riddles,” he wrote, in his prophetic masterpiece, “is to solve them.”

Antoine de St-Exupéry was born into an aristocratic family in Lyon, France, in 1900, shortly before the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers. He grew up to be inspired by this new technology, and trained and worked as a commercial pilot in the 1920s, writing a series of stories and novels on the subject, including the best-selling Vol de Nuit ( Night Flight , 1931). At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, he served in the French Air Force, but after the German invasion and Occupation in 1940 lived in exile in the United States, where he wrote his memoir of combat, Pilote de Guerre ( Flight to Arras, 1942), as well as his immortal fable The Little Prince, but later returned to serve in the Free French Air Force. His plane disappeared in a reconnaissance mission in July 1944.
Joann Sfar was born in Nice in 1971. After gaining a degree in philosophy, and enrolling at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he attended the Nawak workshop, where he met such artists as Lewis Trondheim, Emmanuel Guibert, and Christophe Blain. He published his first graphic novel in 1994, and has since produced over 130 titles, including Petit Vampire ( Little Vampire), Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi’s Cat ), Donjon ( Dungeon), and Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince). Whether in children’s stories or erotica, action fantasy or meditative reflection, he brings a total originality to all genres, and breathes new life into the comic form. His creative energy has also taken him to other media – to literature, radio drama, painting, and film, notably with Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life and the animated adaptations of his Chat du Rabbin and Petit Vampire

rrested w ith her family in the Netherlands, deported by the Nazis to Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen, and orphaned – all by the age of seven – Emmie Arbel survived the camps, only to face a new ordeal of suffering in what should have been a place of refuge. Traumatized as a child by violence, abuse, and isolation, she has transformed her survival into an inspirational lifelong mission both to bear witness to the Holocaust, and to celebrate the enduring resilience of the human spirit. Working closely with Emmie herself, the acclaimed German graphic artist Barbara Yelin has created an unforgettable “visual biography” of this remarkable woman: her rebellious independence, her indomitable humour, the wisdom of her contemplation. Emmie Arbel: The Colour of Memory is at once a haunting portrayal of a historical atrocity, an inspiring account of a modern friendship, a beautiful work of art, and a meditation on memory itself.
Barbara Yelin was born in 1977 in Munich, and studied illustration at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. She became known as a comic book artist in France for Le Visiteur (The Visitor, 2004) and Le Retard (Delay, 2006). Her first publication in Germany was Gift (2010, with a text by Peer Meter), the story of a historical crime that brought her work to the attention of a wider audience. Her subsequent career has included her popular comic strip Riekes Notizen (Rieke’s Notes), first printed in the daily newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau in 2011, and The Summer of Her Life (with Thomas von Steinaecker, SelfMadeHero, 2020). Her graphic novel Irmina (SelfMadeHero, 2016) received an Eisner nomination. She lives and works in Munich.

This Slavery
■ AUTHOR OF ORIGINAL: ETHEL CARNIE HOLDSWORTH
■ TEXT ADAPTED BY SOPHIE RICKARD

SCARLETT RICKARD

Thrown out of work when the cotton mill burns down, sisters Rachel and Hester Martin are forced to find new ways to survive. One agitates for reform, striving to free her community from the enslavement of the factory system; the other submits to the slavery of a patriarchal marriage. A hundred years after the first publication of Ethel Carnie Holdsworth’s lost classic, this sumptuous adaptation by sisters Scarlett and Sophie Rickard weaves her tale of romance and hope through the cobbled streets of industrial Lancashire.
Ethel Carnie Holdsworth (1886–1962), a writer, feminist and activist from Lancashire, was the first working-class woman to have a novel published in Britain. She had at least ten novels published and wrote This Slavery in 1925.
Adapted from a novel by the radical author Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, we witness the starkly observed realities of what it was like to be female in pre-war industrial Britain.
"Righteously strident, passionately polemical and powerfully enraging, engaging... should be compulsory viewing for all." — Now Read This!

The Rickard Sisters are graphic novelists from the same Lancashire cotton-country as Ethel Holdsworth, and have collaborated on adapting a series of early 20th-century political novels in their own lavish trademark style including The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists and No Surrender. Scarlett is the artist and Sophie is the writer, and despite living 200 miles apart, they work closely together to perfect the development of these rich, vibrant, and inspirational books.
KEY POINTS

A critical portrayal of British working-class life written with warmth and dignity by a woman who lived through it.
■ CENTENARY EDITION: One hundred years after its first publication, a groundbreaking reinterpretation of a neglected classic.

The Compleat Angler
A GRAPHIC ADAPTATION
■ AUTHOR OF ORIGINAL: IZAAK WALTON
■ WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED BY GARETH
BROOKES

AAn ambitious multimedia adaptation of a well-known and much-beloved classic of 17th-century literature, fit for lovers of art, nature, and the philosophy of fishing.
"The Compleat Angler is a delight, an absolute delight."
— The Slings and Arrows
foundational environmentalist text centuries ahead of its time, The Compleat Angler is one of the most reprinted books in the English language. From the ruins of the English Civil War to the challenges we all face today, Gareth Brookes’ highly original multimedia adaptation of Izaak Walton’s classic focuses on its instructional aspects, highlights its eccentricities and contemplative themes of nature and friendship, and draws parallels between today’s politically divided and ecologically endangered England and that of the 17th century. Following Brookes’ similarly ambitious The Dancing Plague, this adaptation is lovingly rendered in both linocut engraving and hand-drawn pen-and-ink to contrast the meditative and the instructional in Walton’s writing. As a guidebook on how to fish, this 350-year-old manual makes the perfect gift for any angling enthusiast, and its reflective writing connects with post-pandemic desires for calm, mindful pursuits and a return to nature.
Gareth Brookes studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art, and holds a PhD in Comics Studies from Central Saint Martins, UAL. His graphic novels include A Thousand Coloured Castles (2017) and The Black Project (2013), which was nominated for an award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival. POLKA DOT QUEEN
■ BY SIMON ELLIOTT

“The only method I have found that relieves my illness is to keep creating art. I followed the thread of art and somehow discovered a path that would allow me to live.”

BOWIE
■ BY REINHARD KLEIST
■ TRANSLATED BY MICHAEL WAALER
Reinhard Kleist’s critically acclaimed graphic biography of David Bowie forms two parts: Starman: Bowie’s Stardust Years (SelfMadeHero, 2023) and LOW: Bowie’s Berlin Years (SelfMadeHero, 2025)
Reinhard Kleist, born in 1970 in Hürth, Cologne, has worked and lived as an illustrator and comic book artist in Berlin since 1996. He made his international breakthrough in 2006 with the biographical comic book Johnny Cash: I See a Darkness, which was awarded the renowned Max and Moritz Prize and nominated for both the Eisner and Harvey Awards. With The Boxer in 2013, Kleist became the first cartoonist to receive the German Youth Literature Prize. In 2017, Kleist once again tackled one of music’s great storytellers in Nick Cave: Mercy on Me, which was simultaneously released in many languages. In 2018, Kleist was honoured for his work with the Max and Moritz Prize for Best German-Language Comic Book Artist. In 2021, Kleist tackled another extraordinary boxing champion, Emile Griffith, in the comic book Knock Out!
STARMAN
BOWIE’S STARDUST YEARS

How David Bowie changed the face of rock music.
1972, the rock’n’roll messiah ZIGGY STARDUST was born. His provocative play on sexual identity and gender roles laid the foundation for David Bowie’s ascent to becoming one of the most successful pop musicians of all time. Reinhard Kleist’s Starman weaves the gripping tale of this outrageous character’s genesis, rise, and fall, as well as of David Bowie’s hapless efforts in the London music scene before Ziggy’s arrival, and of the struggles he experienced with his own creation at the height of his fame. As Bowie transforms himself, ever more frenetically, into the egocentric rock star he first conceived, the extravagant lifestyle he had only ever imagined threatens to engulf him, and bring everything down before his eyes…

KEY POINTS
■ CAVE AND CASH ARTIST: Reinhard Kleist is the awardwinning author of Nick Cave: Mercy on Me and Johnny Cash: I See a Darkness, which was nominated for the Eisner and Harvey Awards.
■ BOWIE FAN BASE: A treat for Bowie fans, as well as an excellent introduction for those unfamiliar with his work .

LDavid Bowie’s legendary time in West Berlin as he searches for inspiration and records his album LOW (1977).
ow traces the aftermath of David Bowie’s groundbreaking tour of America, and the iconic “Berlin years” that followed. Hot on the platform heels of Starman: Bowie’s Stardust Years (SelfMadeHero, 2023), Reinhard Kleist masterfully concludes his two-part biography of David Bowie. In 1976, Bowie escaped the frantic madness and substance abuse of his life in Los Angeles for the Wall of the divided city of Berlin. With his friend Iggy Pop in tow, Bowie quit drugs and created LOW, the first album of his “Berlin Trilogy”. But even here, in some of the happiest days of his life, Ziggy Stardust would not let him go... Low follows Bowie’s forays through West Berlin’s revolutionary music scene and wild club life, and takes us deep into his recording sessions at Hansa Studios. The friendship between Bowie and Iggy drives both artists to new creative heights, while Bowie’s relationship with the cabaret artist and drag icon Romy Haag illuminates his fascination with Berlin as a city on the brink. Kleist’s Low is both a retelling of Bowie’s Berlin years and a vibrant portrait of the city itself.

Sophie’s World
A GRAPHIC NOVEL ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY
■ ADAPTED BY VINCENT ZABUS
■ ART BY NICOBY
■ BASED ON THE BOOK BY JOSTEIN GAARDER
■ TRANSLATED BY EDWARD GAUVIN
I n this witty comics adaptation, ZABUS and NICOBY reinvent JOSTEIN GAARDER’s novel of ideas – a beloved bestseller that has already won the hearts of over 50 million readers around the world – to bring Sophie’s charming quest for meaning to a whole new medium and a new generation.
Jostein Gaarder was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1952. After teaching philosophy and the history of ideas in Bergen, he devoted himself to writing. His worldwide bestseller Sophie’s World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy (published first in Norway in 1991) was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and readers alike. He put a significant portion of his rights earnings towards establishing a foundation for sustainable environmental development. Playwright and comics writer Vincent Zabus lives in Namur, Belgium. He became well-known while penning children’s series for the long-running and beloved Spirou magazine. He went on to create the prizewinning tales Les Ombres and Incroyable!, which debuted as plays and then became graphic novels in collaboration with the artist Hippolyte. His adaptation of Sophie’s World combines his passions for storytelling and philosophy. A product of the mid-1970s, artist Nicoby has published over 40 works in a variety of genres, styles and formats, ranging from memoir to humour to adventure to reportage to observations of social foibles, both in book form and in periodicals such as La Revue Dessinée and Spirou, to which he is a regular contributor. He lives in the Breton countryside near Rennes, far from car exhaust and electric scooters.

The worldwide philosophy bestseller reimagined as a two-volume graphic novel.
VOL I: FROM SOCRATES TO GALILEO

One day, Sophie receives a cryptic letter posing an intriguing question: “Who are you?” A second message soon follows: “Where does the world come from?” It is the beginning of an unusual correspondence between our curious young heroine and her mysterious penpal. As the questions begin to pile up, Sophie is propelled headlong into a startling adventure through the history of Western philosophy. Her search for answers will see her explore each of the major schools of thought as she tries to uncover the true nature of the letters, her secretive teacher… and, above all, herself!
“...its endlessly inventive artwork and increasingly meta approach are an unexpected treat. In encouraging readers to find their own philosophical voice, this slyly subversive history book reveals it’s actually far more interested in the future than the past and is far more entertaining for it.”

For starters, denial: we refuse to accept that unpleasant events have taken place, even though they are all too real.
I drink like a fish every night, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got a drinking problem!
Projection: the act of attributing our fears and desires to others.
I’m telling you, he doesn’t love me because he’s jealous!

Displacement: shifting socially unacceptable impulses onto another object. Rather than screaming out your irritation in a restaurant, you break a glass.
Rationalising finding more acceptable reasons for something hard to face, like failure.
It’s not like I didn’t work hard. He’s just a bad teacher!
Reaction formation : reducing anxiety by adopting behaviours contrary to our beliefs.
To avoid conflict, we mimic behaviours that trouble us rather than dare to disapprove of them.

So sorry! Looks like I’m the one who’s late this time!
Regression resorting to behaviours that reassured us when we were younger, such as adults who suck their thumbs.
No. Last thing I recall is heading into the underground. Then everything goes black. You don’t remember the attack at all?
Sublimation rechannelling socially unacceptable desires into transformative creative outlets.
When my husband died in that accident, instead of murdering the other driver, I decided to found a support group for people who’d been through the same thing.
And finally, repression : blocking out memories that are too scary or traumatic.
