EDITOR’S EDITION Fall and fond memories! Fall comes to the coastland once again, bringing back to us many familiar routines. Somewhere between the gray skies, warm fires, and drizzly mornings on the beach. I finally surrendered to an aching sciatica in my lower back I have been trying to ignore. That sleepless night I wrestled with pillows and blankets until fatigue, pain killers and a heating pad that kept shutting down without effectiveness convinced me I was comfortable, warm, and ready to collapse. Half-sitting to preserve the position of no pain, I opened my eyes in the dimly lit room. My attention was drawn to the window, where outside the dark was eased by a soft, silencing cover of rain and peaceful family of threedeer. The peaceful scene began to settle my distracted senses. The fire crackled against the dampness at the window. I recalled my other experiences of fall, other storms. Many seasons come and gone. Many aches and pains nursed by the kindness of “family”...missing that tonight! The cups of chicken soup, fluffing of the pillows, sweet comforting words of mom: it’ll all be fine– just go to sleep! If it weren't for the slowing reins of this stubborn ache, I might have missed it. The opportunity to treasure a little of the simple riches of this life. As we enter our coastal fall season, may you also be enriched and strengthened by your own moments and powerful blessings. above the grade publications, LLC www.abovethegradepublications.com

Santa Margarita

Santa Margarita Created by the construction of the Salinas Dam in 1941, Santa Margarita Lake was originally designed to furnish water to Camp San Luis Obispo. Today, swimming in the lake is not permitted as it is the drinking water reservoir for the City of San Luis Obispo. Beyond the developed area of the park, Santa Margarita Lake Natural Area represents several thousand acres of designated open space. This section of the park is managed for its natural resource values, passive recreational use, and environmental education opportunities. The area is accessible to hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. Motor vehicles are not permitted in the Natural Area. Santa Margarita Lake Regional Park is a nature lover's retreat. With thousands of acres of unspoiled open space, the park is home to countless species of plants and wildlife making it the perfect location for nature study, horse back riding, boating, and fishing. 5

El Camino Veterinary Hospital

The Range1380 El Camino Real, Atascadero, CA 93422 (805) 466-6677 2317 El Camino Real Santa Margarita, CA

I absolutely love this restaurant. I know where it is , yet it is still difficult to spot , especially in the dark! Located in the tiny town of Santa Margarita (just a quick 10-minute drive from San Luis Obispo and Atascadero), you would never stumble upon it on your own. Another great thing about this the Range, there main marketing is word-of-mouth, and the place stays full to capacity this way speaking loudly for its consistency and quality of food. They don't take reservations or credit cards (or at least not up until the last time I went), but who cares! Just hit the ATM before you go (or they will take a check, with proper ID?), and tremendously worth the wait if there is one! The comfortable patio with a glass of wine, a good friend and great weather (which we usually have –all thru the year), makes the wait just another experience of The Range! This restaurant has the nicest people working there, almost s if they own the place and the best casual atmosphere for a more upscale quality cuisine. The food is always beyond incredible and I have yet to try something I didn't love, even during our CHRISTMAS party each year. I have to admit I tend to slightly overeat because you just have to try the appetizer, that salad (especially the MAN SALAD), plus your dinner (incredibly tender beef, mouth watering chicken) and then who can resist those desserts? The menu leans to "comfort-food" (my favorite) in taste but it fits with the atmosphere of Santa Margarita, and my general taste as well as the North County where people still want their red meat while dining higher-end as seen in there apps like escargot and crawfish. A prime example of fine dining was when, after the local ranch had castration day, they had very fresh "Rocky Mountain Oysters" fresh off the steer from just down the road, behind the Range. I don't eat them, however, I thought if you did, how much more fresh can you get? Whether from the Central Coast or wanting to truly experience the Central Coast atmosphere and local lifestyle, The Range never has disappointed me nor anyone I’ve referred. They are a refreshing perfect balance of local taste and atmosphere with any big city quality, all at the right price. You may want to call ahead (805-438-4500), just to see if there is a wait. If they know you are on your way, sometimes they will sort of keep a table in mind for you.

Grooming preparation for winter 1. Set up an indoor spot for your outdoor dog if it is too cold for you to spend time outside than it is too cold for your dog to do so. If it is absolutely unfeasible to bring your dog inside, you must provide for your dog a warm place to avoid the elements. A doghouse with hay or blankets may seem like a warm place however, you must get inside and see if it is any warmer...lots of time it is not any warmer! Try opening up the garage or building an insulated structure for your pet. If at all possible bring your pet in when in climate col a warm spot for “REX” be certain there water doesn't freeze and that his food isn't covered with snow. Most importantly don't neglect to spend time with your dog because it is too cold. 2. Resist the temptation to outfit your dog with a new winter wardrobe. Your dog was already born with a fur coat. Dog clothing and accessories are usually more enjoyable to pet owners than to pets, and in some instances, can actually distress the animal. We all know the occasional sweater or jacket can be cute, we have to be certain the extra article meets the dogs needs, and not our own. In extreme conditions, like in mountain climbing excursions, or in time of illness or fur shortage, dog dressers should make certain the clothing is not tight and is not pulling the dogs fur, and does not impede natural movement or block openings for elimination. 3. Clear the area where your dog regularly uses the bathroom. Remove all snow and ice from the area and provide a clear path to this area. This will help keep the dog on track with housetraining, not only by making things more comfortable, but by keeping the dogs routine as consistent as possible. It will also keep your dog warm and dry, and reduce the amount of snow and ice tracked into your house. 4. Ready the inside of your home. Make sure your dog has a warm, comfortable place to sleep that is free from cold drafts. This can be as simple as laying a cold blanket on the floor in a warm spot. Keep an old towel or wash cloth by the door to dry off your dogs paws and belly after going for walks. Wash and clean your dogs toys, make sure he has plenty of things to do to avoid winter boredom. 5. Play with your dog more. With winter weather setting in, a lot of pet owners are less likely to take dogs on long walks or to the dog park for exercise. Taking regular daily breaks to play with your dog will provide necessary exercise, while also offering human benefits, like reduced stress and blood pressure. It’s also a great time to reinforce all those tricks and commands that you might be slacking on. Double the feeding recommendations on your pets food to make sure your not overfeeding during the inactive winter months. 6. Skip the groomer and avoid unnecessary bathing, the extra dog fur will serve your dog well when the weather outside is frightful. Many vets recommend not bathing your dog more frequently than every six to eight weeks. To allow the natural skin oils to replenish. If you can get away with it, skip a middle-of-winter grooming appointment, or ask for a trim instead of a shave. Also, if your dog isn't dirty, and doesn't smell bad, skip the bath or wipe down the dog with a damp cloth rather than submerging her7in water.

The Mexican government began to distribute land in the valley to private citizens in 1833, and Pedro Estrada received 40,000 acres that includes the land the city now occupies. In 1913, Edward Garner Lewis founded the "utopian" Atascadero Colony, marking the start of the settlement of what has become the city of Atascadero. How To Design A Deck.

ON C E

By Jim Reninger

TH

DECK DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

A deck is a popular home improvement that not only adds to the value of your home, but provides a focal point for enjoying the outdoors. You'll want to carefully consider the design elements that go into your deck–it should include the features that match your lifestyle and complement the design of your house. Planning is the most important part of building a deck, because, chances are, you'll be living with your design for a long time. There are three main considerations when planning a deck. Several questions must be answered in each topic. This document explains each topic and provides the background information you'll need to make informed choices. How You Plan to Use Your Deck–The most important consideration in deck design is how you will use it. Do you entertain frequently, and if so, how large a group will you need space for? What kind of seating will you need–would you or your guests be more comfortable on built-in benches or patio furniture? Do you want the space arranged to accommodate conversations between small groups, or in one large common area? Will you need adequate lighting to entertain at night? Try to imagine all the ways you'd like to use your deck, because most design elements will

16

be based on those kinds of preferences. Location–Chances are, the size and orientation of your property and house limit you to one or two deck locations, but within those limits, you may have more choices than you think. You may be able to add a door, build a walkway, or incorporate a privacy screen that will allow you to locate your deck so it is most convenient for your intended uses. The climate in your area and the views you'll see are the major factors to consider when deciding where to place your deck. A north-side deck will probably be the coolest location. Southern or western orientations may be too warm in the middle of the summer, unless you include an overhead screen, or build the deck around an existing shade tree. You may be able to avoid prevailing winds by locating your deck where the house will provide some protection. Likewise, careful placement can minimize traffic noise, eliminate unwanted views, or provide additional privacy. If you plan to include a hot tub or swimming pool in your plans, privacy considerations for you and your guests may be very important. Legal Considercide on a locazoning ordithe overall size any privacy mum distance lot lines. Neighcovenants may of the strucget approval

ations–Before you detion, first check local nances. They will limit of your deck, height of screens, and the minifrom your deck to your borhood or subdivision restrict the appearance ture, and you'll have to for your design.

Also, check with the local building department to find out whether you'll be required to have a building permit, and what kind of plans you'll have to submit. Finally, be sure to check with your local utility companies to make sure you won't run afoul of utility rights-of -way, and to locate buried pipes and utility lines. Size–You can build any size deck you want within legal limits. But even within those limits, a deck can be either too big or too small. The most important consideration (aside from cost) is use, but a huge deck can look out of place next to a small house, just as a tiny deck looks wrong with a big house. If you think your dream deck is too large for your house, break up the expanse by building smaller sections on multiple levels. To test your ideas, measure the size you want on your lawn. Drive 4-foot stakes at the approximate corners, then tie string between them at about the height of the railings. Set your lawn furniture in the area to get an idea of how the space will work. The most common mistake people make is building a deck too small. The difference in cost between a deck that is a little too small and one that is the right size usually isn't that much. One tip: If possible, size your deck in 2-foot or 4-foot increments. You'll have to buy standard lumber lengths anyway, and there's no point in wasting that material when you could have a larger deck for 17 the same amount of money

SIMPLY CHANGING YOUR OIL‌.can increase your mileage! So you are tired of paying such high gas prices and want to try and increase your miles per gallon! Sorry I cannot bring these crazy gas prices down but I think I can get you a couple extra miles per gallon. First off there is a bit you yourself can control in aiding in the increase of fuel efficiency. First of all you can, most likely, change your driving habits and save a few: decrease the quick acceleration and therefore decrease the brake use also. Most of us hit the gas pedal to get where we are going almost as if we will get there quicker yet , most of the time we will arrive quicker simply going along with the traffic flow. Less pushing of the gas pedal directly results in about 1 to 2 more miles per gallon. Next it is very important to fill your tank on a cool evening or morning as gas expands in the heat and you get actually more gas in cooler weather. Also keep your oil clean, filled and the air filter unobstructed! Here is where I can help in your changing your own oil and air filter! This will also increase your fuel efficiency by 2-3 miles per gallon! 1.

Always find coupons in the paper or online for oil and oil filters on sale or with rebates! (air filters and PCV Valves also)

2.

Seek out a safe place to be able to climb under your vehicle allowing you room, safely, for movement under the vehicle for you to slide under to remove the oil reservoir plug.

3.

Check your oil plug and oil filter to its where a bouts: go online to

http://

www.quakerstate.com/car-care/oil-change? var1=x&var2=y&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term= changing%20oil_phrase&utm=campaignGeneral%20Oil this web page will show where they are located 4.

Drain all oil from filter and reservoir and make certain all is drained and clean around hole as well as plug and rescrew plug snuggly back into reservoir hole. Take new filter and make certain o-ring seal has fresh oil all around and carefully reinsert filter and only hand tighten!

5.

Cayucos is one of California's last original beach towns. Situated just twenty minutes north of San Luis Obispo on Scenic Highway One, Cayucos offers a relaxed atmosphere with wonderful unspoiled beaches, a popular beachside boardwalk and a pier for fishing and enjoying the sunsets. San Luis Obispo county is located on the California Central Coast and is halfwww.cayucoschamber.com way between Los Angeles and San Francisco - about 250 miles either Above the grade feature town way - about 4 - 5 hours driving time CAYUCOS on State Highway 101 - depending on traffic. The town of Cayucos was born from the Spanish Land Grant days and was part of the Morro Bay Cayucos Rancho. Surveyed in 1875, the original town was developed by Captain James Cass who built the original wharf, store, and warehouse that provided for commerce throughout the coastal communities. Cayucos enjoyed a colorful youth with gamblers and rum runners frequenting the Cayucos Tavern - a local favorite to this day. The Chumash Indians were the original inhabitants of most of the region now claimed by San Luis Obispo. The Chumash of this region call themselves the Stishni, and spoke a Chumashan language quite distinct from all the other Chumashan speakers who lived to the south and east. The most famous invention of the Chumash was the plank canoe, called a tomol or Cayuco. Cayucos enjoys mild climate year round. Temperatures range from 45 degrees F to 75 degrees F thru the winter with many clear beautiful beach days approaching 80 degrees F. Summer temperatures range from 55 degrees F to 80 degrees F in the summer with occasional foggy mornings in August and September. Rain averages 10 to sometimes 20 inches per year from September thru March.

Gardening: Fall Preparation of Lawn Environmentalist and author Diane MacEachern proposes that we "use our spending power to protect the planet and ourselves." Her book Big Green Purse helps consumers shop green for everything from laundry detergent to condoms. I recently spoke with Diane about fall cleanup and composting. She pointed out that gas-powered leaf blowers generate surprising amounts of pollution, not to mention noise pollution. According to the Website, The World Women Want, "Gasolinepowered lawn and garden equipment accounts for more than four percent of our urban air pollution." If you do blow your leaves, Diane suggests using eco-friendlier appliances, such as electric or battery-powered (ideally rechargeable) blowers. Raking Better yet, of course, why not rake? Make it a fun family project. For advice on buying a rake, check out eHow. Then create a compost pile of leaves and other debris in a corner of your yard. I often wondered how composting works and knew virtually nothing about it; I pictured a compost pile as a heap of garbage under a tree and worried that, if I had such a heap, it would attract an extended family of rats. Not so. Creating a Compost Pile eHow describes composting as "a process of gathering together biodegradable materials and placing them in a big pile to allow them to decompose together." Begin by making a pile of leaves and over time they will decompose. Diane says you can just keep adding leaves on top. They start to decompose from the bottom so you begin by taking the bottommost decomposed matter first and use it as mulch. Accelerating Decomposition Diane notes that it may take a year or more for your leaves to decompose. Matter physically heats up, she explains, and the hotter it gets the faster it decomposes. You can accelerate the decomposition by periodically turning the pile with a pitchfork. Composting Kitchen Waste

We are a tiny winery creating rich, voluptuous wines. We take great pride in the fact that our wines are truly hand made by us personally with excessive emphasis on quality of the finished product. We have a simple philosophy; great wines are created in the vineyard. To this end, we have spent countless hours in our estate zinfandel vineyard priming it to bear only the lowest yields of highly concentrated fruit. The same approach is made in the amazing vineyards we painstakingly select to craft our Cabernets and Syrah with. With the focus on the vines, there is little else for the wine to do except take a blissful sleep in French oak. This simple formula has allowed us to encapsulate the pure essence of the vineyard and bring forth wines that leave an unforgettable impression. Our passion and obsessive attention to detail can be discovered in every bottle we create. In order to achieve our aspiration to produce nothing but extraordinary wines, our production is very low. CASS Great wine starts at the vineyards

Cass Vineyards and Winery is located in the rolling, oak-studded hills between Paso Robles and Creston on California’s beautiful Central Coast. This area that the vineyard calls home offers quiet serenity for the visitor and a perfect growing season for wine grapes. Sited due east of the “Templeton Gap”, we receive the evening’s cooling breezes that the west side of Paso Robles is noted for. We also rest far enough from the coast to generate the heat needed to optimally ripen the Rhone varieties grown in our vineyards. One hundred percent of the wines crafted at Cass Winery are Estate Grown. Our vineyards surrounds our Tasting Room and winery. You can literally touch, taste, see and smell the grapes from the block where they are harvested. The Tasting Room offers picnic fare and our chef prepares wine and food pairings daily from 11-5pm at the Cass Café to enhance the feel of this special environment. Scenic paths lead to oak-shaded picnic areas for our visitor’s complete wine country sensory experience. A unique feature of our wine making is that all of the Rhone grapes we grow are ENTAV certified. ENTAV (Establissment National Technicque pour l’Amelioration de la Viticulture) is the national agency of France responsible for the quality of wine grape varieties. Over 90% of all French Vineyards are started with ENTAV certified plants and are only recently available at www.entav.com.fr Cass Winery

Dr. Warren Frankel, his wife Kathy and there three children moved to Paso Robles from the San Fernando Valley in 1979 with a vision of a simpler life. The Frankel family first planted 20 acres of pistachios’ on the ranch, followed by 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After initial success with both plantings, Dr. Frankel expanded the vineyard operation in 1997 with more Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Zinfandel and 10 acres of Merlot. Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre, Petite Sirah and Viognier are the most recent additions to the vineyard. http://www.sculpterra.com/

The rich, concentrated wines of Sculptera are the result of combining exceptional fruit from the winery’s estate vineyards and select Paso Robles vineyards with meticulous hand-crafted winemaking. Gentle handling, using traditional gravity methods ensures that the integrity of the wines stay intact. Sculpterra wines are aged an average of 12 to 18 months in America, French and Hungarian Oak.

Avila Beach, pronounced AH-vuh-luh, is a census-designated place in San Luis Obispo County, California, USA[2] and located about 160 miles (257 km) northwest of Los Angeles, and about 200 miles south of San Francisco. The ZIP Code is 93424. The community is inside area code 805. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census.

History The name Avila commemorates Miguel Ávila, who was granted Rancho San Miguelito in 1842.[3] The town was established in the latter half of the 19th century, when it served as the main shipping port for San Luis Obispo. Although Avila Beach still has a working commercial fishing pier and the inland areas have extensive apple orchards, tourism is now the main industry. There are few historical structures remaining; among the oldest is the Point San Luis Lighthouse, built in 1890 after a series of shipping accidents. Geography The beach itself is less than 0.5 miles (0.8 km) long and sheltered in San Luis Bay, which is formed by Point San Luis on the west and Fossil Point on the east. Avila Beach faces south and the 600 foot elevation of Point San Luis breaks the prevailing northwesterly winds. It is therefore usually warmer than the other beaches on the Central Coast. Most of Avila Beach is undeveloped, except for a few blocks adjacent to the beach with homes, hotels, and small businesses, and a few recently built upscale housing developments inland, near a golf course. Avila Beach is also known for its hot springs, which are used for resort spas. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP covers an area of 6.0 square miles (15.6 km²), 99.71% of it land, and 0.29% of it water. Pronunciation Many people mistakenly pronounce the town's name as ah-VEE-lah given the name's Spanish origin. However, the correct Spanish pronunciation is AH-vee-luh. Ordinarily, the penultimate syllable of Spanish words is stressed, except when indicated by an accent over a different syllable. In Spanish, Avila is actually spelled "Ávila" thus indicating that the first syllable, not the second, is stressed. Climate Average temperatures vary little during the year, ranging from the upper 40s to low 70's Fahrenheit from November through April, and from the 60's to low 80's from May through October. Average annual rainfall is 15 inches. Along with much of the California coast, winter is the wet season, with more than 70% of the yearly rain falling from December through March, while summer brings drought conditions. Demographics The 2010 United States Census[4] reported that Avila Beach had a population of 1,627. The population density was 269.9 people per square mile (104.2/km²). The racial makeup of Avila Beach was 1,507 (92.6%) White, 13 (0.8%) African American, 7 (0.4%) Native American, 33 (2.0%) Asian, 0 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 34 (2.1%) from other races, and 33 (2.0%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 111 persons (6.8%). The Census reported that 1,627 people (100% of the population) lived in households, 0 (0%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 (0%) were institutionalized. There were 842 households, out of which 115 (13.7%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 416 (49.4%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 39 (4.6%) had a female householder with no husband present, 16 (1.9%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 36 (4.3%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 14 (1.7%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 296 households (35.2%) were made up of individuals and 108 (12.8%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.93. There were 471 families (55.9% of all households); the average family size was 2.45. The population was spread out with 183 people (11.2%) under the age of 18, 74 people (4.5%) aged 18 to 24, 263 people (16.2%) aged 25 to 44, 597 people (36.7%) aged 45 to 64, and 510 people (31.3%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 56.9 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males. There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 181.3 per square mile (70.0/km²), of which 529 (62.8%) were owner-occupied, and 313 (37.2%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 3.1%; the rental vacancy rate was 7.4%. 1,074 people (66.0% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 553 people (34.0%) lived in rental housing units. Avila Beach has three piers: Avila Beach Pier, 1,685 feet long, intended for tourist strolling and recreational fishing, Harford Pier, for commercial fishing boats to offload their wares, and the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly SLO) Pier, part of the university's marine research program and not publicly accessible. Diablo Canyon Power Plant, one of the two nuclear power plants in California is located in a remote part of the Avila Beach unincorporated area, about 6 miles northwest of the beach itself. In the late 1990s, Unocal began the cleanup of decades old oil seepage discovered years earlier from corroding pipes under the township, and which had caused a massive and toxic oil spill under the town. Over 6,750 truckloads of contaminated material was sent to a Bakersfield Landfill, and replaced with clean Guadalupe Dunes sand. Many of the town's homes and businesses, including entire Front Street and Front Street Buildings, were razed as a result of the half mile wide excavation. After years of negotiation, Unocal agreed to a thirty million dollar settlement, which has been used to rebuild the town. Today, new buildings, homes, businesses, modern walkways and sea motif walls and benches take their place. A Sea Life Center welcomes visitors to explore the local ocean inhabitants up close. Avila Beach was the primary shooting location for the 1979 film California Dreaming, which starred Dennis Christopher, Glynnis O'Connor, and Seymour Cassel. The Avila Beach Pier was featured in a Super Bowl advertisement on February 7, 2010. History

www.oldcustomhouse.com The story of The Old Custom House actually had its beginning I 1542 when Don Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo discovered the San Luis Bay and named it Todos Santos (All Saints) because of its beauty. After that, there was a slight lull in the ports historyjust a bit over 200 years of obscurity (things tended to move slow in those days.) In 1772, after the building of Mission San Luis De Tolosa, events started to gain momentum. Ranchers and merchants came in, and as the population grew, so did the need for supplies. Shipping became common in the first half of the 19th Century using Cave landing as the Port ‘O’ Call. But because passengers had to climb a rope ladder up and over the rocky cliffs and supplies had to be lifted up with massive cranes, Cave Landings history was a short one.

Port San Luis came into its own when the wharves started to be built. There were stage lines and small gauge railroads ed to run supplies to and from the Port to ship out to all points in the Pacific, ing shipping oil to Alaska. Finally, right after the Great Fire of San Francisco in (and probably because of it), San Luis Bay was designated as an official United Port of Entry. A $500,000 breakwater was built using rock blasted from MorRock and shipping from all over the world kept it quite busy.

creatinclud1906 States ro

The Port was under the jurisdiction of San Francisco and later Los Angeles. deputy collectors would drive in whenever their services were required and use rented offices. An official building was needed, so David Muzi of Avila built what was The “OLD CUSTOM HOUSE”. The building was dedicated on

staged. Over 200 public officials and businessmen of California attended as well as a crowd of over 3500 on-lookers. There was a parade of over 200 decorated cars, and floats with a free lunch for everyone and the Atascadero and Paso Robles High Schools Band in uniforms of maroon color played for all. Construction on the “new” Custom House restaurant started at the beginning of 2001. After 17 months of hard work, “The Custom House restaurant was finally able to open its new doors in July of 2002. The Custom House today specializes in a unique indoor/outdoor dining experience. Our menu boasts many old favorites as well as some new specialties. Our food is prepared fresh daily and we offer a large variety of exotic drinks to enhance your every meal. So even though it took over 385 years, old Juan Cabrillo would have been proud to see what has become of Todos Santos Bay.

San Miguel

http://www.americantowns.com/ca/sanmiguel-information San Miguel is home to the Mission San Miguel Arcángel, founded on 25 July 1797. Mission San Miguel Arcángel was founded on July 25, 1797 by the Franciscan order, on a site chosen specifically due to the large number of Salinan Indians that inhabited the area, whom the Spanish priests wanted to evangelize. It is located at 775 Mission Street, San Miguel, California, in San Luis Obispo County. The mission remains in use as a parish church to this day. After being closed to the public for six years due to the 2003 San Simeon Earthquake, the church re-opened on December 22, 2009. Inside the church are murals by Esteban Munras. Father Presidente Fermin Francisco de Lasuen founded the mission on July 25, 1797, making it the sixteenth California mission. Its location between Mission San Luis Obispo and Mission San Antonio de Padua provided a stop on the trip that had previously taken two days. In 1803, the mission reported an Indian population of 908, while its lands grazed 809 cattle, 3,223 sheep, 342 horses and 29 mules. That year's harvest included about 2,186 fanegas of wheat and corn (A fanega was about 220 pounds). Most of the mission burned, while still being developed, in 1806. It was rebuilt within a year. On July 15, 1836, the Mexican government secularized mission lands, including Mission San Miguel, and Ygnacio Coronel took charge. In 1846, Governor Pío Pico sold the Mission for $600 to Petronillo Rios and William Reed. Reed used the Mission as a family residence and a store. In 1848, Reed and his family were murdered, leaving the Mission vacant for a period of time. The Mission was a stopping place for miners coming from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and was consequently was used as a saloon, dance hall, storeroom and living quarters. In 1859, President James Buchanan returned the Mission to the Church. In 1878, after 38 years without a resident padre, Father Philip Farrelly became the "First Pastor" of Mission San Miguel Arcángel. Through all the years the priests kept the church in condition and it is called the best-preserved church in the mission chain today. In 1928, Mission San Miguel Arcángel and Mission San Antonio de Padua were returned to the Franciscan order. Since then, the Mission has been repaired and restored, and has one of the bestpreserved interiors (which gives one of the best examples of old mission life). For many years, the Mission served the town as an active parish church of the Diocese of Monterey. Unfortunately, harmonic vibrations from the nearby Union Pacific Railroad main line has weakened the unreinforced masonry structures over the years. The San Simeon Earthquake of December 22, 2003 caused severe damage to the sanctuary at Mission San Miguel. The Catholic Church considered closing the parish due to the extensive damage and the estimated $15 million cost of repair. Work has since been completed and the Mission is to reopen on October 2, 2009. Bells were vitally important to daily life at any mission. The bells were rung at mealtimes, to call the Mission residents to work and to religious services, during births and funerals, to signal the approach of a ship or returning missionary, and at other times; novices were instructed in the intricate rituals associated with the ringing the mission bells.

Recipe of the Month: Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie Ingredients FOR THE CRUST -1 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 teaspoon water) FOR THE PIE -7 to 8 cups peeled, cored and thinly sliced small Granny Smith apples 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup Gold Medal unbleached all-purpose flour 1 cup light brown sugar granulated sugar, for sprinkling FOR THE ICING -1/2 cup powdered sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons milk

Directions 1Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Unroll pie crust on a lightly floured surface. Brush with butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon. Roll up tightly and slice into 1/2-inch rounds, like miniature cinnamon rolls. 2Press miniature cinnamon rolls, flat side down, evenly into the bottom and sides of a 9-inch glass pie plate, making sure there are no spaces between the rolls. Brush pie crust lightly with egg wash. 3Place sliced apples in a mound on top of the crust. In a large bowl, combine butter, flour and brown sugar and form into crumbles using fingers or a pastry blender. Sprinkle crumble over apples. 4Sprinkle granulated sugar evenly over crumble. Bake pie until the top and crust are a golden brown and the filling is bubbling, about 40-45 minutes (cover top/ crust with foil if necessary to prevent it from getting too dark). Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on a cooling rack. 5In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and milk to form icing (add more sugar or milk to reach desired consistency). Using a pastry bag or Ziploc bag with one tip cut off, pipe on icing in a swirl on top of crumble on fully cooled pie 55
