So this is Christmas, and what have we done? Well, a lot actually... It’s been an amazing year for Brand Vaughan; from launching this incredibly popular magazine that you hold in your very hands, to officially becoming Brighton and Hove’s Christmas number one (…agency) by selling the most properties in 2017. Also, our lettings portfolio has grown to become the largest in the city for fully managed properties, something we are very proud of. But arguably, the biggest news of the year is that we welcome esteemed Brighton and Hove estate agency Tanat Jones & Company, to the Brand Vaughan Family. Established in 1989, Tanat-Jones & Company has become one of the most trusted and renowned agencies in the city, and now, together, we move forward to become the biggest and best independent agency in the city.

season’s hottest properties, our foodie feature showcases Humble plates, a new pop up, affordable fine dining experience. We focus on Hove Park for our property spotlight, and our editor Sam gets in some Christmas comedy with an interview with Father Christmas himself! All that and more in this festive edition of Abode. Merry Christmas to all.

What was once a very modest bungalow in the prestigious and leafy area of Tongdean, can now only be described as an architectural masterpiece. This visually mesmerising home stands apart from its

righton and Hove is a cosmopolitan coastal resort famous for

its history, beaches and festivals celebrating the arts, and Hove Park is a jewel in our crown, its lush forty acres hosting interesting

events all year. Nestled between the sea and the Downs, it’s surrounded by quiet, exclusive and classy homes which step up the leafy hill from the detached residences of Goldstone Crescent up to the mansions of Dyke Road Avenue. There’s an impressive range of architectural styles in the area, but all these luxury homes, whilst providing a champagne lifestyle, have a family focus with big gardens and mostly off -street parking. Local schools are good- and within walking distance, and there’s access to some of the best private schools in the country as well,

including Lancing Prep, Windlesham, Brighton College and Brighton

and Hove High School. Hove Park itself, amongst other attractions, has a playground and cafe which is always full of local parents playing

with their children. Teenagers and those who like to keep fit are also catered for with three football pitches, seven tennis courts and a basket ball court, and Jack and Bert of Studio JRL are based just minutes away, ready to take you through your paces on the adult gym equipment. There’s a great community here, with dog walkers and joggers of all

ages enjoying the mature parkland, and visiting friends or family will love the miniature railway and Fingermaze sculpture, whilst standing proudly at the corner, the megolith “Goldstone” remains as a reminder that this is a site that has been populated for many centuries, for all the

A message from our Hove office: “While it may have become a bit of a running joke to say you live in Hove ‘actually’, those Hoveites may ‘actually’ have a point to protest. Hove was once rakish Brighton’s sensible and suburban sister, but not anymore. The boundary lines are blurred and Hove is now the more sought-after side of the city. Why? Well Hove just seems to feel a little more grown up and sophisticated. Take a stroll along the promenade in Hove’s direction and the ‘dirty-weekend’ hotels make way

for Regency squares; you’ll see hipsters playing boules on lawns over swaggering hen parties, and yes, Hove’s clean and often empty beaches have lawns! It is family friendly sitting perfectly between the South Downs and the coast, and you are never more than a few meters from a gastropub or cool new cafe - seriously, what’s not to love?’

right reasons. Within a short drive of fashionable shopping districts and between both Brighton and Hove stations serving Gatwick and London, the theatres of the West End are easy to reach, so this prestigious area has always appealed to actors and professionals who want to return home to peace and quiet. Now, with the A23/A27 and its swift connections to the Amex Stadium, this area is becoming even more glamorous – with some innovative contemporary homes being built to prove it, like the £1.75 million home on Hill Brow. Move over Hollywood! But this is a friendly area that remains discreet, and a closely guarded secret is a parade of shops, carefully tucked away – there’s a newsagent, wine merchant, post office and dry cleaners where you can go ‘incognito’ and join friends at the relaxed Nola café during the day, or the atmospheric Nola lounge for tapas in the evenings. When you want pampering, you and your partner can experience the expertise of Twist Hair and Beauty, which also does massage and manicures, and then meet in the family run, authentic Italian pizzeria Galileo on the corner, where your children will be welcomed and your privacy guarded, so although the city centre is just minutes away, everything you need is right on the doorstep.

Mr Gay UK’s Christmas Campaign to help the homeless and their dogs

M

r Gay UK, Matt Rood, is supporting the homeless charity, Sussex Economic Support, run by Jim Deans. Every Sunday the organisation set up a street kitchen adjacent to The Clock Tower on North Street, Brighton, serving hot food, drinks and donated clothing to the homeless. Also present are StreetVet, an award-winning RCVS registered practice, who deliver free healthcare to the homeless dogs. Homelessness is a major issue in Brighton and Hove, unimaginable for some, but a heart-breaking reality for many. It is horrific to endure sleeping on the streets at any time of year, but especially now when temperatures have plummeted and Christmas is just around the corner. Please help! The following items are urgently required: 500ml flasks, boxer shorts, socks, gloves, hats, scarfs, jumpers, coats, boots, sleeping bags, roll mats and camping gear.

abode charity

For dogs: Jackets, jumpers, food, treats and blankets. You can send the items to the following address, or come down to The Clock Tower on Sunday between 1-3pm to donate. Unit 7B, 196 Old Shoreham Road, Hove, BN3 7EX. Please consider buying a Bivvi Bag, (a sleeping bag cover designed for Arctic conditions) costing only ÂŁ8.50. Available online from: silvermans.co.uk. Although some homeless shelters are now open, space is limited and we must prevent more tragic and unnecessary deaths on our streets. Thanks to: Abode Directors, MHA London and Lust Brighton for their kind donations.

property insight

From Ugly Duckling to Sophisticated Swan Is it just me, or has the ‘shades of grey’ phase finally had its day? It’s inoffensive, sure, and it goes with literally anything, but as a property copywriter, I see this grey on grey palette more and more and, while I feel bad to say it - I am a little tired of it. There are only so many adjectives you can use for ‘grey’ without stealing from Farrow and Ball’s colour chart, so when I come across an absolute gem like Westview, in Cornwall Gardens, my heart sings and I feel inspired once more!

outside, while filling the house with natural light from east to west. It was the exceptional, open plan rear extension which gave me real house envy however. In here, industrial meets vintage and vintage meets contemporary, yet these styles work in perfect harmony. The exposed supporting-steel and brick wall are celebrated, and the hand-built kitchen has a professional look; taking inspiration from Mr Oliver using stainless steel surfaces, a Wolf gas hob and bespoke, hardwood drawer units. My favourite piece was the reclaimed and restored 1950s sink unit - in the utility room of all places, but it is touches like this which show the ingenuity and attention to detail which make this house unique.

Upon entry, I could not fail to be impressed. What began as a modest 1950s Bungalow had been transformed into an exceptional, detached family home. Every element has been cleverly considered for its aesthetic as well as function, and space and light were clearly of utmost importance in its conception. Vaulted ceilings on the first floor give interesting shape to the bedrooms, and a generous amount of glazing links the inside with

Humble Plates T

hanks to award winning restaurants such as 64 Degrees and etch., fine dining has firmly established its identity on the Brighton and Hove food scene, with diners clamouring to experience the elegantly presented dishes and delicious wines on offer. However, one of the downsides to fine dining is the cost, not everyone can afford to eat at such ostentatious prices, although many I suspect, would like to. There is now an alternative – respectfully snapping at the heels of etch. et al, is Humble Plates, a new pop up (and more affordable) fine dining experience. Their ethos is reflected in the name: ‘Humble’ and their aim is to make fine dining accessible to all, by governing costs while still offering a fantastic experience. I was invited along to the launch evening at The Southern Belle, on Waterloo Street to try it out.

The pub is traditional while still exuding the quirkiness that is synonymous with Brighton. Humble Plates had commandeered the dining area situated to the rear of the building, which provided a relaxed and intimate setting. On offer was a five-course tasting menu, with two of the five dishes being served with a pairing of craft beer.

My favourite dishes of the evening were firstly, the cleverly named ‘Humble Pie’, an amuse bouche in every sense of the word. The miniature pie was filled with a combination of

Finally, dessert. Malt and Hazelnut – malt flavoured ice cream topped with a candied hazelnut meringue, roasted hazelnuts and cocoa nib brittle with hot chocolate ganache. This was quite simply heaven on a plate, the chewy sweetness of the meringue complemented the malt ice cream, it was sweet but not sickly. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more. I predict good things for Humble Plates over the forthcoming months, their events have already been selling out, so make sure you book now. It is fine dining that won’t hurt your pocket quite so much! humbleplates.co.uk £35pp – Five-course tasting menu with pairings throughout.

Dec 2017 / Jan 2018

I appreciated the informal and yet professional service, the brains behind the operation are clearly passionate about what they do. Each dish was presented with panache and described in detail. I also enjoyed the pairings of craft beer – a contemporary take on the usual glasses of wine.

seasonal mushrooms, with truffle and 24 month aged Napoleon cheese, encased in slightly warm, well-seasoned pastry. The earthy flavour of the filling was robust, yet not overpowering and the pastry crumbled in my mouth. A delicious, witty start to the evening. Secondly - Beetroot and Mackerel, an innovative and colourful plate of food. The dish consisted of a beetroot taco, made from masa corn flour and roasted beetroot puree, on top of this was a tartare of smoked mackerel, finished with dill pickled cucumber with horseradish yoghurt on the side. I was surprised by the meaty texture and subtle sweetness of the taco; all of the flavours were apparent and worked harmoniously together – the lemony freshness of the mackerel was offset by the tangy horseradish, a delightful and unusual dish.

HO HO HO

Abode’s Editor was fortunate enough to be granted an interview with arguably the most famous man in the world – the one and only Father Christmas, for a chat about mince pies and Christmas Eve stamina… How do you stay on the nice list? Ho- Ho- Ho, good question - by being well behaved, and spreading festive cheer to others all year round. If you end up on the naughty list, is there anything you can do to redeem yourself at the last minute? If you’ve been naughty all year, one day of being good is hardly enough! But one good act can often shine through!

Also, Elfie is there to nudge me if I fall asleep (which obviously never happens)

How does Rudolf’s nose stay so red? We have a specially assigned elf who polishes Rudolph’s nose in the morning and at night. He also eats lots of carrots which are essential for the magical red colour.

What is the true meaning of Christmas? The true meaning of Christmas is sharing with, caring for and celebrating one another. It’s a time for family and friends, those we know and those we haven’t met yet. The meaning of Christmas is something we should celebrate all year round.

Is he your favourite reindeer? Do the others get jealous of him? I couldn’t pick aPresents favourite! They all work soBRIGHTONS hard toORIGINAL help ALTERNATIVE deliver the presents, PANTOMIME C.I.C and although Rudolph leads the way, they are all such good friends. Do you get any presents for yourself? The joy of seeing others receive presents is enough for me, but Elfie does get me a small surprise gift each year. Last year it was a jumper with a picture of me on it. Starring The likeness wasn’t very good.
