THE GENERATION GAME

N

o, not that one.

However, a ‘didn’t they do well’ is certainly reserved for the lettings market as of late. It seems that the number of those in private rental properties has started to level out against homeowners in England, with home ownership itself being at its lowest level for nearly 30 years. If you’ve watched the news at all over the last couple of years, you’ve probably heard a lot of references to ‘Generation Rent’, and while this could easily be brushed off as another new name for millennials, there is actually far more to it. Born out of the idea that young people are struggling to make their way onto the property ladder, it suggests that most 25-35-yearolds will be renting right now and for the foreseeable future, while struggling to save up for a deposit to buy. But rather than focus on speculation on what is going to happen, I wanted to find out what has driven this trend. Is it purely a money (or lack there-of) issue against ever rising house-prices or is it a generational thing?

Keeping that in mind, there seems to be a clear parallel against another startling fact, that by 2016, one in four residents in Brighton and Hove were private tenants. This put the city third in the list of the UK’s largest cities for most residents in rented

Is it possible, that, perhaps unlike the ‘Baby Boomers’ and ‘Generation X’, the current crop of earners just aren’t as hung up about owning their own homes? The world is a lot more accessible than it once was, a lot faster moving than it was too, perhaps the allure of travelling and not being tied to one place is also part of the reason so many younger people don’t feel the need to ‘put down roots’ so early. There’s something to be said for not being financially tied to one location, the ability to stay somewhere for six months and then move on without hindrance. If we look back to national data, it revealed that the private rental sector has doubled in size since 2004, with almost half of all 25 to 34-year-olds paying a private landlord for their accommodation. More recently, this trend seems to be defying the government’s intention of enabling more first-time buyers to enter the market with a 3% stamp duty. It’s as if an increasingly large portion of the population just does not want to buy, rather than simply not being able to afford to. Maybe it is simply a case that the current generation flew the nest and kept flying for longer, before making one of their own. If that’s true, the market may follow the same course as the likes of Germany, in which a worrying homeowner statistic of just 39% has sparked a property buying boom in recent years. Time will tell if the majority of renters will return to tradition and become homeowners once more, and if that happens, on behalf of the sales industry, it’ll be nice to see you, to see you…

As you know, Brighton and Hove is a unique, quirky city inside of its own soapy property bubble. What happens here does not usually reflect what is happening in the rest of the country. While national statistics show Britain as an ageing population, with the number of those over retirement age doubling to 9.9millon, Brighton appears to be a different story. A quick glance at the numbers tell us that the 2011 census discovered the median age in Brighton and Hove was just 35 (Source: Office for national statistics), and while we will have to wait until 2021 to find out if that has officially reduced, it’s fairly safe to assume that with higher intakes at our two universities and more student accommodation being built, Brighton and Hove is becoming very much a young person’s playground, if it isn’t already.

an introduction from the editor

MY BRIGHTON LIFE

T

he late rock critic, Steven Wells, famously said that Brighton is full of: “crusty-wusty, hippy-dippy, tw*t-hatted, ning-nangnongers.” I’m not quite sure where I fit into his characterisation, possibly somewhere in between ‘hippy-dippy’ and ‘ning-nangnonger’. The point he was trying to make is that Brighton is full of colourful characters. It’s a place where you can be exactly who you want to be, without fear of judgement or reprisal. The eclectic assemblage of people is vast and cohabits peacefully here. Aside from my family, this city is the true love of my life. I’ve always maintained that if Brighton was a person, I’d marry him or her in a heartbeat. I wasn’t born and bred here – but having been a resident for 21 years now, I do believe that I deserve honorary Brightonian status. The love affair began when I was 13 years old. My beloved uncle rescued me from the boarding school I’d grown to detest, for a much-needed day out. I remember standing on the Palace Pier, breathing in the sea air and marvelling at the rogue chip-stealing seagulls. I decided resolutely that when I grew up, I was going to live here.

So far, I’ve evolved from party girl, to student, into full time mother and journalist. The city has supported my every whim and has accepted me unconditionally. I’ve always belonged here. There aren’t many places where I could’ve made the aforementioned transitional leap successfully. Motherhood usually entails moving somewhere horrendously suburban, because it’s ‘safer’ or because the schools are better. I love the fact that my son has the

There isn’t anywhere else I’d rather live or bring up a child in the UK and I’m not the only one who feels this way. Everyone I’ve met who relocated has their own story that usually involves falling in love with Brighton. In this column over the forthcoming months, I’m going to make it my mission to discover their untold stories. Watch this space…

teven Edwards is a British Chef, who is best known for winning the 6th series of MasterChef: The Professionals, in 2013, becoming one of the youngest ever winners of the competition at the age of 26. He is greatly respected by his peers and renowned for creating elegant, expertly cooked plates of food. Previous to MasterChef, Steven trained with some of the country’s leading chefs including Raymond Blanc and Chris Wheeler, before moving to Horsham in 2008, joining the brigade at South Lodge Hotel, a five - star country house in the heart of Sussex.

After six years at South Lodge, Steven left in 2014 to set up on his own, this was when ‘etch.’ was born. The restaurant offers customers a unique dining experiences in a fun, interactive and non-pretentious atmosphere. While searching for a permanent restaurant to call home, Steven and his team did several pop ups all over the country, most notably at Blenheim Palace, the Leeds Corn Exchange and a two-month residency at the Latymer Restaurant at Pennyhill Park Hotel, in Bagshot. His food philosophy is uncomplicated, using quality locally sourced ingredients to create unique and simple dishes, focusing on getting the most out of each product he uses.

Abode’s directors were invited along for an amazing dining experience: “Prior to arriving at etch. we were asked if we had any dietary restrictions, so it was clear from the outset that the restaurant offers a personal touch. This was further reinforced by the chef, Steven, who visited each table in the restaurant. The atmosphere was extremely relaxed and as expected the food was divine. There was a real explosion of flavours, with superb wines accompanying each course. Starting off as a Chef de Partie, in the newly built Pass Restaurant, under the guidance of renowned Michelin starred chef Matt Gillan. He moved his way up to Sous chef, before becoming Head Chef of the hotels second restaurant The Camellia at just 25 years old. It was during this time that he also won ‘Sussex Young Chef of the Year’ in 2010.

In March 2017, Steven’s dream became a reality with the opening of his first restaurant located in Hove. ‘etch. by Steven Edwards’ offering weekly changing tasting menus with dishes inspired by the surrounding Sussex countryside.

SNOWDOGS IMPACT ON THE CITY D

uring Autumn 2016, an extraordinary nine-week sculpture trail, Snowdogs by the Sea, hit the streets of Brighton and Hove, with visitors to the trail, contributing over £10million* to the local economy. However, most importantly of all, Snowdogs by the Sea raised £310,000 for Martlets Hospice and achieved an unprecedented level of awareness for this local charity which provides a vital community service.

During the summer, Balfour Primary School paid tribute to Niamh Storey, a little girl and former pupil who died of a rare form of cancer, in 2014. The school raised a whopping £6,500 to buy Snowdog ‘Bobby’, who now takes prime position in the school grounds, following a special ceremony on July, 21st. Niamh’s mother Gilli said:

The fundraising success we have seen as a result of the art trail has been incredible.”

The artwork is incredible, the theme is very fitting but also Niamh personally loved strawberries and flowers which the design features. It is very colourful and she really loved colouring and would use it as a way to take away the pain. It just felt right.”
