Safe, affordable housing is something most of us take for granted. Yet, for those in situations involving domestic violence, it is a lifeline to independence and a new beginning. The Women’s Center offers emergency shelter, transitional living, counseling, child abuse prevention programs, legal advocacy and employment counseling for hundreds of women and children every year.

About The Women’s Center The Women’s Center is an independent non-profit human service agency founded in Waukesha in 1977 committed to providing safety and support to women and their families and to facilitate their development. In 2011, the Women’s Center served 380 adults and 161 children with domestic violence counseling.

As part of the MBA’s Community Outreach Program, members have teamed up to rehabilitate four homes in Waukesha that are part of The Women’s Center’s Transitional Living Program. MBA members donated supplies, money and their time and expertise to change a five bedroom single-family residence into a two-family home with separate entrances and utilities. Planning, demolition and remodeling has been in progress since July and it is expected to be ready for move in this January. The Waukesha Women’s Center will use this property for transitional housing for their clients. This program helps women and their children who are escaping abusive situations have access, for up to two years, to education, counseling and other assistance to begin to break the cycle of violence and establish new lives. For a list of contributors or for more information on the program go to: mbaonline.org/community.

Chef Karen Wilets, The Good Life Catering Karen Wilets, owner of the Good Life Catering Company, offers a full service personal and corporate catering company specializing in smaller more intimate events. Wilets’ success story began when she started supplementing her income by making desserts for the restaurant where she was employed. Her reputation for phenomenal sweets grew, and people started to ask when she was going to make other foods. In 2006, the demand for Wilets’ food was so great, she was able to leave her job and commit herself to the Good Life, her homegrown business specializing in catering and personal chef services.

Owner of Flambé Gourmet and originally from San Diego but happily transplanted in Madison for almost 10 years, Chef Cattaneo has taught cooking classes for five years and spent 15 years working in the high-end food service industry. From his beginnings as a dishwasher at a five star restaurant to chef on an organic farm, then opening and working for some of Madison’s finest restaurants, Cattaneo’s love for food and sharing it has led him to open Flambé Gourmet’s new cooking school.

Bree Schumaker, Skinny Mommy Bree Schumacher juggles (albeit crazily) being a mom of two little boys, a full-time business owner and a recipe developer. Skinny Mommy (skinnymommy.com) was born out of passion to help busy moms create fast, skinny and family friendly meals that are the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

You will never hear a person say,

“We can just upgrade our foundation later”

With 20 years of poured wall experience, we know the importance of a strong foundation built to meet the needs of each jobsite. We are so confident in our workmanship that we put our name on each wall poured by installing a serial-numbered plaque. Il Mito’s Tomato Sauce

24

Dirty Rice by Chef Joe Muench Yields: 2 cups

1/4 cup olive oil

1 teaspoon of fresh oregano

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon of fresh basil

1/2 Spanish onion, chopped in 1/4-inch dice 1/2 medium carrot, finely chopped

2 (28-ounce) cans peeled whole tomatoes (San Marzano preferred), crushed by hand and juices reserved

4 garlic cloves, smashed

Salt and fresh black pepper, to taste

1 onion, diced

2 teaspoons onion powder

1 green pepper, diced

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 rib celery

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

½ teaspoon white pepper

2-3 tablespoons Butter

½ teaspoon black pepper

6-8 pieces chicken liver

2 cups rice

Directions

2-3 strips bacon, chopped

¼ cup white wine

Heat olive oil in a heavy-bottom pan until oil is hot but not smoking. Add carrots, onion and butter. Cover and sweat for 4 minutes on medium heat. Add garlic and stir for another 2 minutes or until garlic is translucent. Add the tomatoes, herbs and fresh cracked pepper. Cook on medium heat covered for 15 minutes. Remove cover, season with salt to taste and simmer for 2 more minutes, blend and enjoy.

1 tablespoon paprika

4 cups chicken broth

1 tablespoon dry basil

1 tablespoon salt

1 tablespoon dry thyme

2 tablespoons parsley

1 tablespoon dry oregano Directions

Il Mito’s Puttanesca Sauce Serves 4

1/4 cup olive oil

2 tablespoons drained capers

1 cup finely chopped onion

2 tablespoons (about 8) minced anchovy fillets

6 cloves minced garlic

1/2 teaspoon dried crushed basil

1 cup tightly packed, pitted, chopped kalamata olives

1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes

1 cup of Chef Feker’s tomato sauce (see above)

Salt

Heat a pan over medium heat, then add the oil. Sweat the onion, peppers, celery and garlic until they’re slightly soft. Add the liver and bacon. Cook for 5-6 minutes. Add the spices and rice to the onion mixture and toast for 3-4 minutes. Add the wine, broth and salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook slightly covered for 10-15 minutes or until the moisture is absorbed. Let stand covered for 10 minutes. Adjust the seasonings. Stir in the parsley just before serving. Serve hot.

Directions  In a large saucepan heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté until soft and lightly caramelized, about 2 minutes. Add the anchovies and garlic, cook an additional minute. Add the tomato sauce along with all remaining ingredients and simmer until the sauce is thickened and slightly reduced, about 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning to taste, cover and set aside.

Cajun Pan Fried Cod by Chef Joe Muench 6-6oz. cod filets

½ teaspoon white pepper

salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

black pepper

1 cup corn meal

¼ cup paprika

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon dry basil

1 cup buttermilk

1 tablespoon dry thyme

canola oil

1 tablespoon dry oregano

1 bunch scallions, chopped

2 teaspoons onion powder

crawfish stew

2 teaspoons garlic powder

dirty rice

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Directions  Season the fish filets with salt and pepper. Combine all spices with the cornmeal and flour. Set aside. Soak the fish filets in buttermilk for 30 minutes. Dredge the fish on the cornmeal mixture and let set for 10 minutes. Heat the oil in a large pan. Add the fish one filet at a time and fry until golden brown for 3-4 minutes. Flip the fish, and finish for 2-3 minutes. Remove from the pan and set on serving plates. Smother the crawfish and scallions and serve with dirty rice, tomatoes and okra, stew and fresh lemon.

Italian Chicken Easy Bake Casserole by Skinny Mommy Serves 4

Sliced
3-4 chicken breasts, sliced

1/8-1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes

Extra virgin olive oil

1-2 cloves of garlic

Handful of turkey pepperoni or one chicken sausage (like three pepper flavored, for example)

1/8 cup of white wine
16oz Marinara

1 container of mushrooms (8oz)

2-3 slices of thin provolone or mozzarella

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Meanwhile heat a pan over medium high with a drizzle of olive oil. Add the mushrooms and the pepperoni or sausage until they start browning (a few minutes) and then stir in the garlic and red pepper flakes. Add in the white wine and turn to high until the wine cooks mostly off. Put the chicken in an 8-inch-by-8-inch dish and then pour the marinara over the top, followed by the mushroom mixture. Top with the cheese. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake 15-20 minutes more or until the chicken is cooked through. Use a ladle to scoop the sauce into a shallow bowl and then put the chicken on top. Pass parmesan and salt and pepper. Kid Tip:  My kids can be weird about sauce so having the pieces of chicken cut up separately works better. Stir the sauce into warm whole grain penne. Also, if your kids will be eating this you may want to go on the light side of the red pepper flakes.

This year celebrates the Metropolitan Builders Association’s 24th Home Building and Remodeling Show. Amid the development of the show over the years, has come a partnership with Hunger Task Force. Each year the MBA and Hunger Task Force partner up to collect food for those in need in the greater Milwaukee area.

• Service & Repair • Well Pumps & Tanks • Senior Discounts • Sewer & Water Construction

The joining of forces started more than a decade ago when the MBA’s Remodelers’ Council sought to not only become more involved at the show but for a way to give back to the community as well. The council decided to create the project that is now known as “The Food House” located this year in the front foyer of the Delta Center. This structure, which resembles an actual house, is filled every year with thousands of pounds of food. Actually, since 2003, the MBA has collected more than 17,000 pounds of food in addition to monetary donations. “Hunger Task Force thanks Metropolitan Builders Association for their continued support,” said Hunger Task Force Executive Director Sherrie Tussler. “Over the past 12 years, the MBA has collected so much to help strengthen the food safety net here in our city. The MBA understands that people right here in Milwaukee need help, and they are right there to give it. We thank them and those who donate at the show.” This year, with a donation of two non-perishable food items, attendees will receive $1 off of the $8 door admission benefitting The Hunger Task Force no other discounts apply. Visit MBAhomeshow.com for more information.

Not too early

to think about spring maintenance for your home MBA Building Lifestyles: The Home Building & Remodeling Show | MBAhomeshow.com | An Advertising Section | Milwaukee Journal Sentinel | January 6, 2013

Outside maintenance

28

Inside maintenance • Inspect, repair and clean the screen doors and windows

• Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of debris that my block the flow of water from your house.

• Check to see if your air filter needs be changed on your air conditioner.

• Ensure that landscaping around the foundation starts at 8 inches down from the top of your foundation wall and slopes away from the home.

Just as spring is a good time for cleaning, it is also a good time for homeowners to do their spring maintenance on their homes. Doing simple preventative maintenance to your house will help the materials used to build it last longer and avoid expensive repair bills later.

• Clean air conditioning coils, drain pans. • Clean dehumidifier coils, check operation

• Properly grade the area under your downspouts and around your house so that rainwater flows away from the foundation.

• Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors • Clean the inside of the exhaust hose that runs from the back of your dryer and vents to the outside.

• Caulking around windows, doors, chimney, foundation and other common leakage points if needed.

• Check the weather stripping on all windows. • Test that your sump pump is working properly

• Inspect for water leaks by checking overhangs, awnings and exposed siding where snow and water might college, causing materials to decay.

• Remove, clean, and store storm windows. Put screens up. • Make sure your refrigerator door seals tightly. If your refrigerator has coils vacuum the coils.

• Clean and refinish if needed your wood deck if needed and nail any raised boards; hammer in any popped nails. • Inspect the paint to see if there are any cracks and/or exposed wood. If you find some scrape it, apply primer and more paint. • Inspect the shingles and flashing on the roof. • Open hose bibs

MBA Spring Tour Subdivision showcases building, Lot Finder

30

Interactive display helps visitors find the perfect lot

You won’t want to miss the 25th annual Metropolitan Builders Association Spring Tour. For three weekends, stretching from April 13 - 28, 2013, you will be able to tour new homes, remodeling projects, condominiums and lots scattered throughout the metropolitan Milwaukee area, at no cost to you. Whether you are looking for soaring ceilings or a second story laundry room, the MBA Spring Tour features homes that are as varied as the people who attend the tour. “The diversity of the projects on display make the Spring Tour an event that everyone can enjoy,” said Metropolitan Builders Association Executive Director Kristine Hillmer. “From city living to lakeside luxury, the options vary every year.”

Metropolitan Builders Association land developers and builders will showcase their properties for sale at this year’s show with the interactive Lot Finder exhibit, sponsored by Demlang Builders Inc. Member companies will display more than 2,000 lots across more than 40 developments in the Milwaukee area. The interactive tool will allow visitors to search by municipality, subdivision, price and developer — other details include size of lot and starting price.

The 2012 Tour featured more than 50 projects in a wide variety of communities, built, remodeled or developed MBA member companies. Projects were scattered throughout Waukesha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, Racine, Jefferson and Walworth counties, and we’re expecting an even bigger tour this year.

“The Subdivision Lot Finder provide all the resources needed for those interested in building a new home, the ultimate one-stop shop,” said Kris Hillmer, MBA executive director.

No matter what features you are looking for in your new home, remodeling project or condominium, you are sure to find them on the MBA Spring Tour. Past tours have been a testament to the changes in new home design with bonus rooms, mudrooms, curved walls, arches, screened porches and 10-foot ceilings taking center stage. Some homes are professionally decorated and landscaped, while others showcase only the attention to detail each builder puts into his or her home, allowing you to imagine how your finishing touches might make the home your own.

Subdivision lots will be available in counties throughout the metropolitan Milwaukee area including Waukesha, Milwaukee, Washington, Ozaukee, Jefferson and more. It’s also available on the MBA Web site, MBAonline.org.

Learn more about the 2013 MBA Spring Tour, or see projects that have been included in past tours, by visiting MBAspringtour.com.

Checklist for finding and hiring a builder or remodeler

34

Use this checklist to help you select a home builder or home remodeler to work on or build your home: —   Contact your local homebuilders’ association for the names of member builders and remodelers. Visit MBAonline.org. You can also ask family, friends or coworkers for recommendations. —   Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers. —   Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.

David & Goliath Builders Presents

The Ridgeview Ranch

—   Check out the company’s rating and if there have been any complaints filed with your local Better Business Bureau: bbb.org.

Grand Opening January 2013

—   Make sure the builder/ remodeler has sufficient workers compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents on your premises.

Go to our website at www.dg-family.com for model hours & directions or call 262-691-8841

Love your Neighborhood But Not Your House?

—   Ask the builder/remodeler to provide you with names of previous customers. If they won’t, beware. If they do, ask the customers if they would hire the builder/remodeler again.

We can Remodel Your House Into a Home You’ll Love!

www.dg-family.com • 262-691-8841

—   Ask if you can see the builder/remodelers work, both completed and in progress. Check for quality of workmanship and materials. —   Do you feel you can easily communicate with the builder/remodeler? Remember you will be in close contact with them throughout the construction process and afterward as you live in your new home. —   Make sure the builder/ remodeler provides you with a complete and clearly written contract. The contract will benefit both of you. If you are having a new home built, get and review a copy of the home warranty and homeowner manual as well. —   Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the builder/remodeler is unable to pay for the materials and labor as the project proceeds, this may indicate a potential problem. Keep in mind that less expensive does not necessarily mean better!
