It has been a wildly creative time. IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARS opened on March 27 , my late father’s birthday, Attorney Christopher C. Mercer, Jr. As soon it opened, I was back in the saddle th

working on the next solo exhibition, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED: AN ODE TO THE GREEN BOOK. It will open on May 10 at the Soo Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis, MN. Both bodies of work are some of my best to date and have already become a blueprint for how I want to manage my time and blossoming career. It is truly a season of “reaping what I sew. ” In th

MOSAIC TEMPARS CULTURAL CENTER

MARCH 27 - AUGUST 16 TH TH 2025

Her Set Her Sound, on the heels of finishing an artist talk at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, invited me to be featured for a SoulAR Artist Talk to amplify my voice as a poet, quilter, and activist. Founded by

Robyn Jordan, who also moderated the program at the Fayetteville Public Library, was the most gracious host. Her thoughtfulness and compassion made the event meaningful. We got to connect with old and new friends, all coming to be inspired by my journey in life, and as a creative being.

We laughed, cried, and laughed a little more. We honored our ancestors, most tied to the history in Fayetteville, was my late father, Attorney Christopher C. Mercer, Jr., who was one of The Six Pioneers, the first African-American students who integrated the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville School of Law. My father did not receive the welcome I did this past week when he arrived in 1949. I felt like I was healing that traumatic energy that challenged my father, and his comrades, daily.

Honor and homage. Those things go hand in hand. Though it may be my work that is visible, it is the ancestral messages and lessons from my people that came before that fuels my work. I saw my future clearly, spending time with folks in my field and a visit with one of my mentors, Sharon Killian (who is the President of NWA Black Heritage, artist, activist, and educator). I was reminded that work is important and, just like my father, my legacy is crystalizing itself to be something that can be celebrated. Watch the program by clicking the photographer to the left.

I've got fantastic news! I want to announce that I’ve been selected to be on the Governing Board of Directors for a phenomenal organization, alt Chicago ( said as "alt space Chicago"). alt Chicago's mission is driven by Art. Faith. and Community. I joined the board to assist in expanding the reach of our mission and create more impact with our programming. From creating beautiful murals on the west side of Chicago, providing justiceimpacted young people their first jobs, and ensuring that the Austin Community is not left behind in the fight to ensure an environmentally safe neighborhood, alt Chicago is a powerhouse, and I am thankful that I get the opportunity to support a worthy organization.

alt Chicago celebrates its 5th anniversary of serving the Austin community. In a time when many nonprofits struggle to find their footing, I’d love for you to join me in supporting their new building’s grand opening weekend, April 25th - 27th, which is a huge milestone.

You can learn more about the organization, donate, and buy tickets by scanning or clicking the QR code on the flyer.
