The Real Realism to Hyperrealism

About The Jurors

Amy Cook

In addition to being Abington Art Center’s Gallery Manager, Amy Cook is an artist based outside Philadelphia, PA. Verity is central to everything Cook creates; she approaches her subjects with an unbiased eye, not glorifying nor beautifying, but rather capturing it in its objective truth. Amy Cook earned her BFA in painting at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in 2021. She is also the 2021 recipient of the Alec Abels Memorial Award in Painting.

Linda Johnson

Linda Johnson is the Director of our Studio School and Galleries as well as a ceramics instructor.

Linda Johnson earned her BFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art and studied sculpture and art history at the Burren College of Art in Co. Clare Ireland. Professionally, Linda served as the Curator and Art Collection Manager for Morgan Stanley before pursuing her art career. Linda is a ceramic artist and has stocked stores across the United States for the past 20 years under the brands Little Flower Designs and Linda Johnson Studio. Based in Huntingdon Valley, PA, Johnson’s work is inspired by nature, incorporating imagery of birds and floral motifs to adorn her wares.

“An imperfect analogy I’d heard is: a more ‘painterly’-style is like putting together a 250-piece jigsaw puzzle, or in a more detailed realistic painting, a 1000-piece puzzle. It’s not about the degree of difficulty to get to the image the puzzle-builderwants. Both are interesting and enjoyable to put together. It’s just one has more pieces to get there.”

“As a subject I most often choose vintage objects in an attempt to honor there past with dramatic lighting and a bold palette. I love presenting the patterns of their structure and how this changes with every twist and turn of the scene.”

“I’m drawn to realism in my art because it gives my information on form, texture and color of botanical subjects. I learn so much and realism satisfies my need for perfection.”

“By reconstructing the past through paint and memory, I am able to capture details that are not clearly revealed in my original source materials. There is an attempt to ‘fill-in’ or ‘piece together’ moments from my past. To understand and communicate reality--to recapture what has been lost.”

“My technique draws inspiration from the European masters, using oil paint, brushes and multiple layers of translucent glazes, without relying on other mediums or tools. This meticulous process results in realistic works, some taking months to complete.”

“Nature’s beauty is limitless and awe-inspiring. Its every little detail is filled with purpose. Incredible new depths can be gleaned from looking at things around us more closely. My art tries to capture the intricate details of our everyday environments and bring those moments into focus.”

“There are few who can avoid being captivated the ‘magic’ quality of a truly convincing illusion. Like a magician, the imagined level of skill required to trick the eye so well always prompts us to ask ‘How did they do that?’ But beyond its sense of wonder, it’s beauty lies in the preciousness of the effect, it’s built-in to the very process itself. In a sense, in modern times hyperrealism lends itself so well to a conceptual thought process.”
