Philomusica is joined by the brilliant young violinist Christiana Mavron to perform Vaughan Williams’s haunting and magical masterpiece, The Lark Ascending - one of the best-loved of all works for violin and orchestra. Aberystwyth’s award-winning symphony orchestra also performs Sibelius’s powerful E minor symphony, which launched the composer as one of the great symphonists of the twentieth century. Aberystwyth’s ever-popular choral society performs two very different twentiethcentury classics. Written late in Poulenc’s life, the vibrant and unforgettable Gloria has become a firm favourite with audiences everywhere. So, too, has Vaughan William’s beautiful Carol Fantasia - one of the most popular of all Christmas choral works. Also in the programme will be some of Canteloube’s well-known Songs of The Auvergne sung by the outstanding soprano, Sally Harrison.
