In Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No 5 you will find tranquillity and serenity that could not be further from the brutal reality of World War II, the period in which the piece was composed. Philomusica is joined by the brilliant young violinist Christiana Mavron to perform Vaughan Williams’s haunting and magical masterpiece, The Lark Ascending - one of the best-loved of all works for violin and orchestra. Aberystwyth’s award-winning symphony orchestra also performs Sibelius’s powerful E minor symphony, which launched the composer as one of the great symphonists of the twentieth century. Aberystwyth’s ever-popular choral society performs two very different twentiethcentury classics. Written late in Poulenc’s life, the vibrant and unforgettable Gloria has become a firm favourite with audiences everywhere. So, too, has Vaughan William’s beautiful Carol Fantasia - one of the most popular of all Christmas choral works. Also in the programme will be some of Canteloube’s well-known Songs of The Auvergne sung by the outstanding soprano, Sally Harrison.
