RESULTS MATTER. FOCUSING ON FINISHING STRONG!
A Message From
Dear Marbut Family,
This issue of the Marbut Messenger is about those individuals who exemplify service to our school community. We appreciate the model you set for our students in your work as parents, teachers, club sponsors, and volunteers. Our school is focused on providing challenging learning experiences that will prepare our scholars for successful college pathways and/or careers that tap into their talents and interests. We will finish this year in a spirit of excellence and with tremendous school pride.
I often remind our students and staff that the world expects results. We have to learn to push through obstacles, be mentally tough, be team players, and produce results that will make a difference in the lives of others. The individuals you see recognized in this issue have exemplified this willingness to work toward results through selfless acts of service.
I am proud of our Reading Bowl Team for their recent participation in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. I'm also proud of our Principal's Advisory Council for their efforts to provide ongoing communication and leadership in our school community. Their commitment to staying the course is a model for us all. Champions never give up. Despite the challenges, they finish what they started. It is this spirit of resilience that provides a perfect backdrop for our celebration of Black Excellence. The struggles that Africans in America have overcome should inspire us all to be more focused and determined.
We hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to seeing you in the hallways of Marbut very soon.

Volunteering in Our Garden
Urban Agriculture at Marbut
One of the most important aspects of school is learning to work together with your classmates Marbut Traditional Theme School offers students many experiences that require them to complete tasks with their peers. We believe that this helps them with their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. They learn how to compromise and how to remain focused on a task and overcome obstacles. Recently, student volunteers worked to construct the new planters for our garden. They were assisted by Mr. Amir Akins, an engineering student from UNC - Wilmington.
Volunteering increases self-confidence.
Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction
You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals
Volunteering combats depression.
Reducing the risk of depression is another important benefit of volunteering A key risk factor for depression is social isolation Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you ’ re going through challenging times Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety
Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy.
Volunteering is good for your health at any age, but it’s especially beneficial in older adults Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the participants Volunteering has also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease
