FOREWORD It is almost a decade since the global leadership has made sustainability a collective goal. Arriving at a common understanding of the sustainability problem is critical to our ability to achieve the goals of sustainable development. Consensus on the sustainability problems can be achieved only by using verifiable facts derived from authentic data. To put it in plain language, data analytics plays a fundamental role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Even as data analytics accelerated the progress in our grasp of the problem at hand, the field of analytics itself went through dramatic transformation.

The last decade would be remembered as the decade of Artificial Intelligence. AI-driven analytics, automation of decision making, and autonomous agents are permeating every industry. The progress may be slow in some industries but it is steady in all industries.

AI, specifically AI-powered analytics, is helping accelerate progress in sustainable development. The most direct use of AI is in Impact Management and Measurement (IMM) frameworks that ensure accountability and transparency in sustainable development projects. AI is also powering new wave of innovative solutions to the problem of sustainability. AI is helping investors assess climate risk exposure in their portfolios. Most importantly, the fusion of AI with sustainability has become a catalyst for reshaping how people perceive sustainability.

Two of the most critical industries for sustainability are healthcare and energy. Two SDGs – Good Health and Well-being and Affordable and Clean Energy, are related to these industries directly. Genomics and machine learning had a symbiotic relationship as they evolved. Together they are expected to take healthcare management to the next level. In addition, AI is driving remote radiology, diet monitoring, robotic surgeries, healthcare data management, etc. In the energy sector, AI and robotics is expected to dramatically reduce the environmental impact of the energy infrastructure including the renewable energy infrastructure.

This edition of A-Gram brings together the thoughts and aspirations of the next generation of leaders in the field of sustainability. The illuminating articles cover a broad range of applications of AI in sustainability. I thank the authors for their contribution to the magazine. I invite the readers to engage a meaningful discourse on sustainability analytics.

“Data is the new oil” is the quote we often hear the most with these advancing times. But with evolution of the “new oil” , digitalization, automation and technological advancements data centres have become indispensable in sustaining the pillar of the contemporary planet. However, the exponential growth in data processing demands has given rise to a critical concern: Growing energy demand in data centres.

This has led to the environmental impact of the data centres and their energy consumption.

With these technological advancements such as cloud computing, the usage of web services and the internet the energy usage of data centres has significantly increased leading to concerns about the carbon footprints and sustainability. The major concerns include power management, cooling, use of renewable energy sources to reduce the overall demand in energy. The major concern these centres have is the constant supply of electricity to power the servers, network equipment and cooling systems. According to Utilities one (2023) data centres consume 3% of the world’s total energy supply. This percentage is expected to rise with the growing digital ecosystem.

The digital revolution has led to an unprecedented surge in data creation, storage, and processing.

As a result, data Centres, which form the backbone of the digital ecosystem, are grappling with the challenge of meeting these escalating demands while striving to minimize their environmental impact. The energy consumption of data Centres has become a focal point, as these facilities account for a significant portion of the world's electricity consumption.

Faculty corner There has been a surge in the generation of the data centres due to the information technology revolution also called as the “digital revolution” also called as “Industry 5.0”. However, with the technology being the need of the hour, the demand for the data centres has also increased with the expectation to avoid further environmental damage. These centres are being scrutinized regularly as they consumer a considerable proportion of global electric power supply.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO HIGH ENERGY CONSUMPTION:

Some of the factors which lead to high energy consumption in the data centres are:

The research suggests that global market data centres will rise between the period 2024 and 2030. These data centres have taken the initiative for building a sustainable data centre to reduce environmental damage.

SEVERAL KEY INITIATIVES HAVE EMERGED TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGE OF HIGH ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Renewable Energy Integration: Many data Centres are transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. By harnessing clean energy, data Centres can significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

Server Infrastructure: Energy-Efficient Hardware: At the core of any data centre are the server structures. These servers are very much power hungry in operation and as the amount of data being processed increases, more amount of power is needed in the operation of such servers.

The development and deployment of energyefficient server hardware have gained traction.

Innovations in chip design and energy management systems contribute to lower power consumption without compromising performance.

Cooling Systems Advanced Cooling Technologies Equipment in a data centre must operate at optimal temperatures. Nevertheless, cooling systems use a lot of energy. One can assert that improper cooling methods add considerably to the energy footprint of a datacentre.

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, one term has recently taken center stage, captivating the attention of media, technology enthusiasts, and businesses alike Generative AI, although many players (Google’s Bard, Anthropic’s Claude, etc.) are joining the league but the most headlines are covered about OpenAI ChatGPT.

WHAT IS GENERATIVE AI?

Generative AI, at its core, is an advanced form of artificial intelligence that possesses the unique capability to generate new, original content without explicit human programming.

Yes, focus on “generate new” At its core, generative AI (sophisticated algorithms and neural network architectures) execution requires computational power (chips – an important part of hardware) - as sand turns into silicon, and silicon into chips, we've orchestrated a symphony of electrons that dance with the grace of neural impulses – yes! silica got the brains and “we made it”.

The tale of IBM Watson serves as a valuable narrative. It prompts us to approach technological promises with a critical lens, acknowledging the nuanced journey from visionary projections to realworld impact. IBM projected Watson as a benevolent digital assistant that would help hospitals and farms as well as offices, factories, and whatnot.

AI technologies are categorized according to their ability to mimic human traits - real and hypothetical - fall into one of three categories - Narrow artificial intelligence (ANI), with a narrow range of capabilities; Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) comparable to human capabilities; or Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), is more capable than humans. Are we even close to AGI and ASI? Think!

Gen AI is creating a lot of human capital displacement - as AI-powered tools are rapidly automating tasks previously considered the domain of human workers. Customer service interactions are increasingly being handled by chatbots, while AI-powered writing tools like ChatGPT are generating content that was once solely the responsibility of human writers.

Designers and illustrators are facing competition from image generators, but we can also see that new job domains are also coming like “Data curators and trainers”, “prompt engineers”, etc.

Evolving and adapting to technologies is going to be necessary. As few business and tech leaders say nowadays, “Thought” will become the new currency- well it was always.

As mankind moves into the era of 5G and Artificial Intelligence, one thing that constantly ticks our minds (or may some of the minds) is the repercussions of it. Human beings have faced everything across ages even the disastrous pandemic, but the topic of sustainability never lets us go away so far without looking back towards the residuals.

INTRODUCTION

We all know that what is sustainability, If I were to explain, it is a process of development which causing any harm to any other resources. Many Big corporates have now introduced the concept of “Sustainability analytics” which is if I were to explain is the evaluation of the long term impacts of a project over the environment in its simplest way.

Sustainability Analytics is one of the tools that can be used to identify whether a project can be fruitful or harmful to the environment. Sustainability analytics has primarily focused on resource-related factors such as materials consumption, energy use, and water use. But now in the new era, a variety of other factors that can affect sustainability performance are also being incorporated.

Student’s corner Recently there has been a lot of buzz about the Writer Guild of America Strike representing 11,500 screenwriters & SAG- AFTRA strike in 2023. If I were to ask that what could the prime reasons behind this strike? Yes! It’s sustainability. Many of the big American Hollywood studios have started utilizing AI to serve its many purposes. Amongst them it there was also a recommendation to use the body Scans of the actors (to be more precisely the background actors) which the can use and place it in any of their films easily, This is perhaps the harshest pain that have been caused the actors over there, and this what threatens the common people that utilizing the new generation modern resources without analysing the footprints that it is going to leave behind will leave the humans toiling between life and food. This is perhaps the first ever protection of the people against artificial Intelligence.

As far as my opinion is concerned I could suggest the five possible steps that could help the companies to identify and understand the whether a particular project or a decision will a positive or negative advantage to the society and environment

This is perhaps one the basic yet very effective tool that can be used to identify the sustainability of the project as it involves the breaking the problem into a structural method and analysing its impact at 5 different steps.

Recently the US Congress has introduced a bill which is a Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, primarily talks about making automated systems work for American people. This bill summarizes on regulating Artificial Intelligence and making sure that AI could be explored in its best way possible without threatening the existing resources. This has been a revolutionary step in the age of Digital era and Innovation to provide a hope of protection to the lower income group.

The Roadmap to sustainability does involves many challenges, one of the most important and yet unavoidable being the regulatory challenges.

Sustainability would have been more stringent if strict laws would have been in force. There are various challenges such as social and political discord in the US due to SEC’s Climate risk disclosures. This proposal has been subject to wide-ranging debate and legal challenges are anticipated.

Environmental, Social and Governance rules (ESG) have been passed which strictly requires companies to comply with the applicable requirements as mentioned by the guidelines with an appropriate disclosure.

Although regulators try to legalise the sustainability development there is a lot more to do.

Sustainability has always been a topic on which discussions have been going and will continue in the future. Through collective support and coordination sustainable environmental goals can be achieved Further I would like to recite some lines on sustainability:

At the end, I would like to say that sustainability is indeed a vast concept which revolves around every field, every organization and industry, business—and the business environment in general—is constantly in flux, and businesses sustainability programs need to follow suit. Government policies and incentives are always changing.

So are economic factors, such as fuel prices and supply levels. And technology advances offer a never-ending opportunity to improve performance. A static sustainability program is yesterday’s news.

Movie review The movie “Hidden Figures” of the year 2016 highlights data and analytics that played a significant part in early space exploration during the 1960s when racism and sexism were rife.

The film centers on Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) – and exceptionally gifted mathematician whose role is crucial. Johnson’s calculated trajectories became essential in the first man voyage into outer space by Mr. John Glenn. When it came to a crucial point to ensure that Glenn landed safely back home, Johnson’s calculations based on data and math accuracy made all the difference. Her work not only ensured that the mission succeeds, but also demystified racial and gender limitations.

Another hidden figure is Dorothy Vaughan who predicted the coming of electronics computing.

Vaughan saw the transformational power of technology and learnt the Fortran programming language. She was able to direct her team into becoming the first group of African-American female programmers at NASA. They turned out to remain relevant while at the same time made it possible for them to integrate analytics and technology.

With respect to this, it is important to mention that Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) was an aerospace engineer who delved into some complex numerical data for the purpose of assessing the viability of Glenn’s orbital exploration. Data provided guidance for her analytical skills that helped define safety criteria and proved the importance of information on highly critical decisions.

In addition, “Hidden Figures” illuminates how people were engaged in a historic race to overcome the barriers they faced and points out the importance of data. However, it is important to note that with technology still in its developmental stages; these women, utilized the power of analysis to chart unchartered areas and proved how one can reshape history using data-driven decisions despite the lack of sophisticated instruments.

In essence, “Hidden Figures’ is a celebration of the genius and grit of these uncommonly intelligent women who with only their smarts and resolve employed data analytics to circumvent the barriers of conventionality and make enormous contributions to one of the major accomplishments of human’s history.
