a note from max

O

h my, what a show! And it came just when we needed it most!

We’re always amazed at the great fortune of having such a wonderful event every other year, but after many months of being locked down from the pandemic, Half Century 2021 was really just what the doctor ordered for many of us. The smiles, joys and laughs with good friends who gathered in Rantoul just can’t be fully appreciated unless you experienced it in-person. Hopefully, these pages will serve to remind those of us who were there, and also to entice those of you who couldn’t make it. Plan now to help spread the happiness and bring someone along in August 2023. Max Armstrong Broadcaster

American Flag By Heather Miller A 65’ X 125’ American flag greets spectators daily at the Half Century of Progress show. The 300 pound “Old Glory” is manned by members of the United Veterans of America, Post 1 out of Gastonia, NC. The flag project was originally started in 1993 to show support for veterans. Post 1 now has a more expansive goal; they collect donations to build ramps and do minor repairs on homes of veterans and to buy vans that can be used to shuttle vets to VA hospitals. Additionally, they also raise money for kids battling various health conditions. The flag crew members from Post 1 all mentioned that the reason they travel the country raising the flag at events is because they love to help people and raising money for good causes is important.

21 ◆ Half Century of Progress 2021

The 6-person flag crew at the 2021 HCOP show consisted of Terry Neal, Sonny Billings, Woody Hayes, Doug Carpenter, Jim Milliron and Neal Lambert (finance officer). Back in Gastonia, NC Post 1 also has a larger flag on 225 foot free-standing flag pole that is a whopping 75’ X 150’. The flag flown at the HCOP Show was purchased in 2020 for $14500. When Post 1 takes a flag to an event, crane companies around the country are paid or donate the use of two large cranes to hoist the stars and stripes. Caston Services, Inc. from Fisher, IL has graciously donated the use of two cranes for the 2021 HCOP Show.

Illini fs at the half century of progress By Cindy Ladage Growmark and Illini FS again was a key supporter of the Half Century of Progress. Brian Neukomm, Energy Management Specialist for Illini FS hails from Cissna Park, Illinois. Brian attended the show, and said that he has been going since its inception. Brian said that while he lives in town, he still has a family farm and has a 1939 Farmall H tractor in the barn that needs a bit of TLC.

Illini FS provided the bulk diesel, gasoline, and propane for the harvesting, plowing, corn drying, and all the needed work done at the Half Century of Progress. “Growmark provided the funds, and Illini FS supplied the fuel service. We collaborated with Growmark and did the legwork,” Brian explained.

The fuel provided came out of the Leverett facility, but Illini FS energy services involved include branches While he didn’t bring anything to the show, being out of Champaign, Vermilion, Douglas, Edgar and part of the Illini team is great, and allows him and Clark Counties in Illinois, and the bordering counties other team members to be part of the framework that in Indiana. Staff members from FS were key to makes this show run like clockwork! ensuring that the work was completed. Brian shared, “Those guys at the I & I Club do a great job. The folks that attended the show were all like delirious 10 year olds. It is a fun gathering, there is nothing like it. Illini FS is part of it from the planting to the harvest.”

“I have to give a plug to Rusty Clifton, our Refined Fuel Delivery Specialist, Tyler Moews, our Propane Delivery Specialist, and Chris Olson is the Energy Manager that oversaw everything.

Illini FS ensured that fuel was there from start to “Illini FS’s trade territory is in the heart of the show’s finish and was an integral part of the 2021 Half location. It made perfect sense for us to help out at Century of Progress. the Half Century of Progress,” Brian said, “because 90% of the members of the I & I Club are our customers!”

randall brothers and earthquake By Cindy Ladage Earthquake is the massive tractor built by Rite Manufacturing that sports a V12 Detroit engine and stands a whopping 18 feet wide and 14 feet high. This year the Randall Brothers again made its visit to the Half Century of Progress. Back in 2013, when Earthquake first came to the Half Century of Progress it was the featured tractor for this show. The late Darius Harms shared a bit of information about the tractor. “Earthquake was built by Rite Manufacturing of Great Falls, Montana. They built 38 tractors. They started out redoing Wagner tractors switching them, and then they built Rite tractors from 300 to 750 horsepower.”

Lee added, “Then, it also takes 800 gallons of fuel.” While Lee said that Big Bud is the biggest tractor made, he added that Earthquake is 2 nd largest. “When he was new, they didn’t have all the tools for all that power. The hydraulic demands get so big, they didn’t’ have the hydraulic power they have today. He was made in a world when things were simple. Today’s lighting would really help him working at night. I try to keep him original.”

For the Randalls, it is a joy to bring the brute power of Earthquake to the Half Century of Progress. When asked what it is that pulls them back to each show, Lee Randall said, “I like everything about the Half Earthquake was purchased by the Randall Brothers Century of Progress. There isn’t a negative thing. in 2012. They brought Earthquake to Rantoul all the way from Holgate, Ohio, which is in the northwest Every piece everyone brings is dear to their heart. portion of the state. Lee Randall explained a bit Whether grandpa bought it new, or it is a horse drawn about them. He said, “We are farmers and deal in piece of equipment is very dear. You couldn’t have used machinery. All three boys stayed on the farm, a better place for this than Rantoul with all those and we are in business together.” runways and airstrips. Even if you get a big rain, you can still have the show with no problem.” About the Half Century of Progress he said, “It is the best four finest days of farming!” As for Earthquake, he is ready to come back in 2023. Bringing Earthquake to the Half Century has become “We took him home, and he needs a little paint and a tradition, but there is nothing routine about moving a few details. We will bring him back in a few years. a piece of equipment this big. “He is kind of heavy,” He has a quiet cab, and he handles good. Lee Randall said, “and you have to get the permits and take the duals off before transporting him.” ”If he had any wish he said, “I just wish they had it every year!” Getting Earthquake ready to roll is time consuming. Lee said, “Driving is about five hours, but it also takes two hours to take duals off, then add 4-6 hours to put the duals back on.”

Not only did she Lori Lynn Parkin bring her picker to the show, but she also drove it from her home in Pekin, Illinois to the Half Century show! “I started out in rural Pekin then drove halfway on the twolane to McLean then to Route 136 to Tower Hill, that took five and a half hours to arrive at the Gate at Half Century. It was 95 miles going 19 to 20 miles an hour.” Her husband Terry picked up her picker at an auction in Hopedale, Illinois November of 2019. Terry tried to discourage her from purchasing the rusty picker saying that it probably didn’t run. Lori who has her own equipment, and Terry his own wasn’t daunted. She was on a mission to have a picker up and running by Half Century 2021 and this one fit the bill. In fact, Terry even was able to buy it $400 below Lori’s rock bottom price.

Starting restoration after an ice storm, the picker literally had to thaw before work could begin. First was dismantling the elevator. Lori said they took pictures of everything so they would be able to put it back together again. She credits Roger Kerns Jr’s and his family’s advice for a lot of help especially when it came to the starter. “They told me to get off, and pull the starter one inch at a time. I messaged with him and his family.” One piece at a time the picker came together until she drove it to the show totaling 1,000 hours of time restoring the beautiful picker! It was viewing these beautiful machines at work at one show that inspired a collector to this monumental task, and she couldn’t be happier!

Lori drove the picker home 17 miles after making sure the brakes worked. They had to wait until November of 2020 to try it out picking corn in their field. Lori said, “I have it videotaped, and everything worked. He ran it, then I got to pick corn with it, it was very exciting. Turning to Facebook for help to

three Generations By Heather Miller Three generations of Feldcamps attended the Half Century of Progress Show this year. Darren Feldcamp and his son, Kyle, have been coming to the HCP for several years. The 2021 show is the first for newly added family member, Roy. They are a John Deere family through and through. The family also ran an implement dealership, Altamont Repair Service, for many years. Darren and Kyle farm around the Effingham and Altamont areas. The things they like most about the show is meeting others with the love of John Deere equipment and seeing history in action at the show.

broom corn By Heather Miller

The demonstration area walks visitors through the steps of the broom-making process from start to finish. It starts with growing the broomcorn, where it is harvested prior to maturity, in the “green stage” or milk stage for seed. It is a tough plant to harvest, but it is easier to cut the head off of the plant at this stage. The broomcorn head is run through a thresher/ seeder/cleaner where the seeds are removed off the brush or head of the plant that had been harvested. The brush is placed in a shed for 6 to 8 weeks to dry and then baled in 350 to 400 pound bales. Spannagel shared that these bales are then taken to the broom factory where it is graded and sorted in preparation for making brooms! It takes approximately 90 to 120 manhours from cutting the plant at harvest to broom completion, which is why broomcorn is no longer grown on a large scale in the U.S. anymore. He shared that 95% of the broomcorn for natural fiber brooms is grown in Mexico.

John Spannagel, of Hidalgo, IL, has been hand-making brooms for 6 and a half years. He and a friend, Darius Harms (originator of the show) were together showing a thresher at a show in Pinkneyville when a new idea was born— showing how to handmake brooms. Darius persuaded John to learn how to make brooms out of broomcorn and the rest is history. John, Mac Bumpus (Charleston, IL) and Bob Henderson (Casey, IL) work together at the HCP Show to demonstrate how this household staple was made back in the 1900’s.

Noah Campbell never thought about tractor pulling until his friends, the Heidricks, got him interested. He built his first pulling tractor while he was a student studying Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His first tractor was called “Student Loans”— an ode to his college payments. He started pulling in 2019 and ended 2nd in points his rookie season. Now, Campbell pulls in the Outlaw class with his second tractor called “Second Semester”. At the time of the show he was 4th in points in the division. When asked what his favorite things were about tractor pulling, Campbell replied immediately with “My pulling family. I really like meeting new people and we are all like family. The Outlaw class is just a lot of nice people.” He went on to share that he built “Second Semester” during COVID so he would have a better looking and running tractor than his first attempt, and he hopes to have more opportunities to run it and fine-tune it in 2022.

Eric is an agronomist for Pioneer Seed out of Noblesville, IN and enjoys bringing his son along to work with their friends using the equipment. The 2021 HCOP Show is the third one Maxwell has attended with his father. When asked what was his favorite thing, Maxwell said he likes keeping the corn going all the time! Shawn Ashby and son, Scott Ashby out of Camden, Indiana also like to show how shellers work to participants. They work together to shell corn and spread the cobs afterwards on the field. draft horses By Rachel McGreal Bill Edwards’ favorite part of draft horse plow demonstrations is not traveling across the country or working with his two mares; it’s the camaraderie shared between the people at the events. The owner of BC’s Belgians from Waverly, Illinois said he has met some of the best people traveling to shows. He describes them as the type of people that will do anything to help someone out. It was at a plowing event that he met his good friend, Don Frederick, who also brought his horses to the Half Century of Progress Show. Edwards and Frederick met several years ago and now see each other often at events all over the United States.

Edwards recalls growing up and watching his grandfather raise draft horses, which is what first sparked his interest in the business. After straying away from the industry for a while, he found himself beginning BC’s Belgians about 20 years ago. BC’s Belgians currently owns two head — Grace, a 17-year-old chestnut colored Belgian and JoJo, a 16-year-old black colored Percheron. beck’s role at the half century of progress

By Cindy Ladage

Beck’s was proud to be the Premier Sponsor at the Half Century of Progress. Toby Ripberger, Beck’s Event Logistics Lead knew as soon as he spoke with the Directors of the Half Century of Progress that Beck’s and the Half Century of Progress were going to forge a great partnership. Toby knew that Beck’s was a good fit for the show. The directors’ dedication to providing a quality show made it an event that Beck’s wanted to be part of. “Beck’s provided the seed so folks could harvest the corn and soybeans. We provide the corn and soybean for all the field demonstrations,” Toby said.

winter of 2013. Today it is a piece of Beck history and a beloved old iron tractor to share. Toby added that while at the Half Century, the restored 4430 JD went through the parade on multiple days!

Also inside the booth were photos of the progression and growth of Beck’s over the years. The photos displayed a timeline of the company’s history , starting with the first-ever homestead of Beck’s back in 1937 to now, including new facilities and expansion along the way. Located in Atlanta, Indiana, Toby said, “Beck’s Hybrids is the largest retail seed company and the third largest seed brand in the U. s.
