COURSES

& Subjects

At Abbey Cambridge, we offer a dynamic and well-rounded British curriculum that prepares our students for both examination success and long-term achievement in their future studies.

OUR APPROACH IS BUILT ON THREE CORE PILLARS:

Æ The acquisition of deep subject knowledge

Æ Mastery of examination techniques

Æ The development of critical thinking skills

We understand that every student is unique, with individual goals and aspirations, so our curriculum and extra-curricular programs are designed to support their personal growth and academic ambition.

Our students are not only equipped to excel in their examinations, but also leave us with a broad skill-set that extends far beyond the classroom. We aim to nurture independent thinkers, problem solvers, and resilient learners, empowering them to succeed in higher education and beyond. Whether their ambition is academic excellence or a passion for a particular career.

LOWER SCHOOL

Focus on traditional subjects, taught in a modern environment.

Our college environment is designed to be informal but supportive, with no uniforms required and teachers and students referring to each other on a first-name basis.

We want our students to develop a love of learning, so our small classes are taught in an engaging and stimulating fashion allowing our learners to enjoy and engage with the lesson content.

YEAR 9

Our Year 9 curriculum has been developed to provide the perfect preparation for not only GCSE study, but for A-Levels, university and the wider globalised workplace environment. Students progress into year 10 well prepared to excel in their GCSE studies.

Year 9 students benefit from their own common room. They join the college wide extra-curricular programme, which includes clubs and activities over the weekend and holidays. They are valued members of the college community and belong to one of our student houses.

“This school does NOT fail to impress, the facilities are amazing, the people (including teachers) are very nice, the food is great, the lessons and periods are interesting. In general this school is not what I expected, its better ten-fold.”

David in Year 9

GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)

Our GCSE courses are run over three different time frames; 2 years, 18 months or 1 year. Students are typically between the ages of 14 – 16 years old. They are assessed by public exams taken at the end of the course, but some subjects may also include coursework or controlled assessment.

GCSE programmes at Abbey Cambridge focus on providing a rigorous grounding for the demands of A-Level study and other post – 16 qualifications.

Students on the two year course will take up to 9 subjects, where as students on the one year course will take 6 subjects.

ACADEMIC PREPARATION COURSE

Our Academic Preparation Course is designed to raise students’ abilities in general and subject-specific English and academic subjects to prepare them to join our GCSE, International Foundation Programme and A-Level courses.

Dependent on students’ level of language and academic abilities, our Academic Preparation Course can be taught for one, two or three terms.

As well as strengthening students’ English language skills, we will prepare them to learn in a typical British classroom environment. This includes skill development in areas such as pair work, project work, independent reading, discussion work and team building.

“Opting to transfer to the International Foundation Programme (IFP) at the conclusion of my first year was the best decision I ever made. The foundation programme gave me additional subject-specific training. Subjects like mathematics are very broad, but with the foundation programme, I was able to master solely math related to business, which would help me in university. This programme allowed me to learn in a more relaxed environment, which made me enjoy the last year of sixth form. My subject teachers were always a source of encouragement, and with their assistance, I was able to attain such an award and such great scores at the end of my sixth-form education.”

Tiffany from Nigeria, class of 2023.

FOCUS ON Medicine

"The medical programme at Abbey can be quite demanding at times, however the advantage that I had during the first few terms in medical school was tremendous and well worth the effort. I am deeply grateful to the Head of Medicine as I feel she influenced me greatly as a teacher and pushed me in the necessary directions to succeed in my goals."

Tomas, class of 2023

Now studying Medicine at Brunel University

The programme involves 5 hours of specialist medicine application preparation sessions each week, led by our Head of Medicine and delivered by expert Abbey College Cambridge tutors.

THE RESULT:

Abbey Cambridge has had a near 100% success rate over the last 5 years for our medics aspiring to process to Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary degrees at university.

“The medic programme was very useful in helping me apply to medical universities as it made the whole process more straightforward.

During the programme, we did various things that would help with our application including finding work experience, carrying out a mini EPQ project and practising for the interviews.

The medic teachers also offer great advice on how to approach questions differently. In addition, I really enjoyed going to the work experience at hospitals and GPs that we applied during the medic programme.”

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

& Pastoral Support

Our house system ensures that our students are well supported and cared for, and have the opportunity to grow and develop in a safe and secure environment.

ABBEY HOUSES

Regular house events and activities allow students to build friendships and create a strong community ethos.

Each member of the school community (staff and students) is allocated to one house. Abbey houses are all to do with pride, friendship, team spirit, and competition. The passion a student develops for their house is right at the core of our outstanding pastoral care.

Students of all ages, genders, talents, abilities, and nationalities come together united in their desire for their house to be the best, to win house points and secure the prestigious House Cup.

Each house is led by a housemaster, who is responsible for the academic and pastoral welfare of all students. The housemaster promotes the ethos of the house and works with the team to create a unique and welcoming community within each house. There are typically 60 students in each house, divided into tutor groups of no more than 15 students.

Scan to watch our recent graduation video.

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

The Student Council and Student Leadership Team work with the school to provide a number of events and celebrations throughout the school year. Highlights always include the New Year celebrations, Christmas Ball and the Spring Ball.

“The main takeaway from my 2 years at Abbey has been cultivating my independence. Academically, that meant having the freedom to develop intellectually, whether that be by attending Abbey Inspires, lectures within the history department at the University, MUN conferences or partaking in discussions with like-minded peers. Being in an environment where students and staff alike are motivating has allowed me to build on my existing interests, but also foster new ones."

"In the often-daunting Oxbridge application process, Abbey’s UCAS team and their access to extending both intra-curricular and external support was hugely influential. My advisor initially encouraged me to apply to top universities, helped me with personal statement drafts, mock interviews, and finally Cambridge college choices. This allowed me to make informed decisions and capitalise on my strengths.

On an inter-personal level, Abbey has allowed me to mature. You learn to take care of yourself, navigate the competitiveness of academics, your future, and your relationships. Equally, these relationships built because of the closely-knit boarding environment are arguably the cornerstones to the Abbey experience. You learn to build a home away from home. Living with your friends; cooking breakfast on a slow morning, studying in the library on a Friday night or walking to the city centre, the little daily activities with others that you begin to develop into a routine are how we all learn to support one another.

Besides that, built around the University, Cambridge is the perfect city to live in as young adults. It is a historical hub for innovation so the opportunities for activities: museums, talks and work experience are available yearround. Taking advantage of everything the city has to offer has been a highlight of the past two years and staying here for another three only fills me with excitement!”

"Firstly, Abbey College gave me the opportunity to meet all the amazing people here, from all corners of the globe, which have made my journey unforgettable. Whether it was late-night study sessions, just hanging out in the common room, completing Duke of Edinburgh, or even cheering on our football team, their support and friendship have meant everything to me and helped me to become the person I am today."

"Abbey College played a crucial role in my journey to my dream university, to study Economics Finance and Data Sciences. They provided invaluable support throughout the UCAS application process, from brainstorming personal statements to mock interviews, the college's dedicated support team went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of my application showcased my strengths and aspirations. But it didn't stop there. Abbey College also supported me in co-founding an economics society and becoming a house captain. It's these opportunities and unwavering support that have truly set Abbey College apart and propelled me towards achieving my dreams.

But none of this would've been possible without the incredible teachers. They have been more than just educators; they have been mentors, cheerleaders, and sometimes even therapists when the stress got real. From guiding us through complex concepts to offering a listening ear during challenging times, they have always had our backs.
