Walk season is well underway!
The African American Male Wellness Agency kicked off its 20th year of walking to save black men's lives on April 15th at Texas Southern University It was our first walk in Houston We consider it a success
Approximately 3,500 people attended the event. Six hundred seventy individuals received a free health screening, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who served as the walk's honorary chair.
"With just under six months of planning and no reference point of what to expect, to see thousands of Houstonians attend the inaugural African American Male Wellness Agency 5K Wellness Walk, left me speechless yet encouraged," said Jamail Johnson, Executive Director of the African American Male Wellness Agency Houston.
The walk seeks to educate black men about their health and end systemic problems that have led them to live shorter lives than their counterparts
"If you are a black American, your risk of having an amputation is up to 4 times higher than white Americans," said Richard Brown, Senior Medical Executive at Johnson & Johnson.
The Houston Walk's executive director is excited about what lies ahead for the event.
"Houston came out in droves to say, “Black Men’s Health Matters!” I can’t wait until next year's walk, as we journey to impact the lives of 10,000 men and women in the city of Houston,” said Jamail Johnson.

Dr. Anjail Sharrief assembled a health care team of five community partners to perform additional screenings at the Houston Walk. Inside our screening pavilliion, our screenings were performed by more than 35 health care volunteers. There were more than 15 doctors and nurse practitioners offering consultations.
Bee Busy Wellness Center and Change Happens were present to perform HIV/STI screenings. We are working to identify their final numbers. We will report them as soon as they are identified.

After an inspiring launch in Houston, our second walk of the year took place in Jackson, Mississippi
On April 22nd, approximately a thousand people came to the Russell C Davis Planetarium to take charge of their health. The mission is critical in Jackson. Mississippi is ranked among the worst states for racial health disparities.
"Jackson, Mississippi - job well done! You were able to screen 210 people in your community to help them learn their numbers and, ultimately, save their lives," said Kenny Hampton, President of the African American Male Wellness Agency.
This year's walk had almost double the number of screenings from 2022
"We look forward to continuing to raise awareness, provide free health screening, and save the lives of our brothers and sisters in your community," said Hampton

EMBRACING MENTAL WELLNESS THROUGH CONVERSATION
The African American Male Wellness Agency is working to confront the stigma of mental health needs among African American men.
The Agency's Mental Wellness initiative holds constructive and meaningful community dialogues through Real Men Real Talk events
Over 600 men across America have attended over a dozen events this year. We have held discussions in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Charlotte, and Columbus.
These men come with diverse life experiences, leading to enriching conversations covering a broad array of topics
