It’s Just The Way Things Are I am simply not going to preach in this editorial about the onslaught of fatalities thus far into this 2021 spray season. I’m sure that everyone is aware. However, it does bring up two topics that are indirectly related.

Reports are that this year is probably one of the more intense runs since the start of what is known industry-wide as the “corn run”. As I write this, the corn run is still going.

For many, these six weeks or so of daylight to dark flying has made a significant difference in their operation and for pilots, their checkbook. That’s a good thing and overall the corn run has been a blessing.

The clock is ticking and every possible acre needs spraying, or it’s gone for another year. Rightly so, the tension mounts and the pathway for an accident all too often presents itself. For a very few, it has become the last spray run of their career.

There was a fatality last month from a Dromader inflight wing separation. This was not the first time a wing has come off a Dromader. I know of three Dromader wing separation accidents. Oddly enough, there was only one fatality. However, the accident in July makes for four fatal accidents. There may have been more.

An FAA Airworthiness Directive and an accompanying Melex Factory Service Bulletin followed the third accident that happened in September 2000. That AD required the periodic eddy current inspection of the wing attach points to the aircraft’s center section every 500 hours or annually, whichever comes first. I don’t know if the accident Dromader of July this year was inspected properly, or even if it was inspected. If it had been inspected properly, in my view the AD requirements may need revisiting. An in-flight wing separation is almost assured to be a fatality.

Every possible means should be used to comply with the AD properly. In time, maybe the NTSB can rule on the July accident in such a way to secure confidence in the structural integrity of the Dromader.

My son, Graham, returned from AirVenture in Oshkosh last month where NAAA hosted a venue. Michael Hutchins brought an AT-802 and Thrush factory pilot Terry Humphry flew in a 510P Thrush. These two aircraft gave A 6 | agairupdate.com

demonstration flights for the thousands in attendance.

Several volunteers assisted in the NAAA booth answering questions about ag aviation. This is excellent public relations for the industry. Should you meet one of the volunteers, or an NAAA staff member, be sure to thank them for their hard work.

I led off the previous paragraph referring to Graham, who grew up in the ag aviation industry; first as me being his ag-pilot father and in later years as editor publisher of AgAir Update. Most of the changes during the last few years you have seen with AgAir Update and the formation of AerialFire have been from the efforts put forth by Graham.

He’s been a huge asset to the business.

I’ve been pushing this ag-aviation rope for over 48 years.

The time has come for me to step back and let youth take over. This past January 1, I sold AgAir Update and its sister publication, AerialFire, to a well-deserving man, Graham.

I’ll remain on the payroll as a consultant, which means you’ll still see me at many conventions and elsewhere.

You won’t see much change in AAU, except improvements.

Besides, Graham has been running things for several years.

I probably should have retired earlier. Almost three months into retirement, I had a full, right side, moderate stroke. I can say without reservation, it was a life changing event. If it had not been for the dedication of Graham, his wife Holly, my wife Sandy and daughter Casey, I may not have survived the three weeks in ICU. It’s been four months since I came home from the hospital. I improve daily, going from flat on my back with 24-hour home health care givers to a wheelchair, to a 4-wheel walker, to a 2-wheel walker to a cane and now to walking two miles every morning increasing that a little with each walk. If there was only one thing I could say about this “event”, it gave me a much better appreciation for God and family.

I’m currently featuring one of those ladies!

Do you have any idea how many women are in that business? Specifically in America…?

Getting Older Just a note to say thanks for raising the subject of age a while back, which resulted in my being much more aware than before.

I don’t know if you recall, but when we had a telephone conversation a while ago, you mentioned that as you get older, your reflexes and all tend to slow down. I didn’t really pick up on that at the time, but since I’ve cracked the big 70 it has really come to the fore just how much a difference a few years make. So looks like this will be my last year in the saddle, save for ferrying hither and thither. I’ll vacate the seat for some of the younger lads.

Bill , when watching this video closely and stopping the frames it APPEARS that the Left Wing separated the aircraft before impact because it is still intact and about 30-40 yards from the impact location. The logical question would be how or why it separated from the center section. Wanted you to see this video.

L.J. Victory Tulsa OK Morning I wonder if the operator had complied with the AD? It’s been around over ten years. Also, I wonder about the impact of the turbine engine causing undue stress from weight and G-loads.

Still doesn’t bring back the pilot and an AD is already in place. The question in my mind is: was it complied with and if so, was it done properly. If the answers are “yes”, then the specs/timeframe of the AD may need visiting.—Bill I agree and believe the AD needs re-visiting. The turbine engine induces different aerodynamic loads and frequencies into the airframe. May need to assign a hours wing life limit to the wings or wing attach fittings for required replacement. Just a thought.

Analyzing the aerial spraying industry in Brazil shows many similarities to the United States - a large number of aircraft flying over fields using the latest application and guidance technology to protect infinite crops from pests and disease. But there is one remarkable operational difference that stands out - while an American ag plane will be leaving a trail in the shape of a curtain, the pattern of a Brazilian ag plane is characterized by distinctive tracks.

During the last few years, the Brazilian ag aviation industry gravitated towards the use of rotary atomizer nozzles. There are many reasons: easier maintenance due to less equipment in the booms, versatility to calibrate different application rates and droplet sizes, more efficient coverage and better crop results and increased profitability for the operator.

Ag aviation operators in all parts of Brazil are increasingly adapting this type of technology. From the smaller aircraft (like Embraers, Cessnas and Pawnees) to the larger ones (AT-802, AT-802 and Thrush 710P and 510P), atomizer nozzles are used with a variety of products applied to a wide range of agricultural crops. In this article, we will share the recent history of some operators who have been leading the way in Brazil.

Tractors. The Balzan family’s company (who come from agricultural roots) was founded in 1998 and is located in the city of São Gabriel do Oeste (in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazilian Midwest).

It provides services all over the country spraying sugarcane, soybeans, rice, cotton, corn and forests. Serrana is one of the ag aviation operations that have been pioneering the aerial firefighting program in recent years, working both with the Brazilian government and neighboring countries (see the January 2021 and October 2019 editions of AgAir Update’s sister publication, AerialFire).

The company introduced the use of rotary atomizer nozzles back in the early 2000s, when it started working with application rates below 1 GPA (10 liters/ ha). Over time, the application rates have been increasingly reduced and, in the last season, tests and applications of up to 0.05 GPA (0.5 liter/ha) were carried out on cotton. The company works with rates of up to 2 GPA (20 liters/ha) with atomizers, using the lowest rate for the application of insecticides and rates

Caio Balzan, a second-generation agricultural pilot, commented on some of the reasons that led them to utilize the rotary atomzier: “The demand came from our customers and with the research, we realized that in addition to this type of application making the service faster and cheaper, the efficiency and the agronomic result were improving due to the high concentration of

active product and better coverage. We are now able to achieve a wider swath width and a higher quality droplet spectrum when compared to conventional hydraulic nozzles”.

Bom Futuro and Tchecão The Bom Futuro (“The Good Future”) group is one of the largest agricultural companies in the world. It cultivates more than 1.5 million acres (600,000 hectares) every year producing approximately 1.7 million tons of grains.

Located in the state of Mato Grosso (in the Brazilian Midwest), it runs the largest crop-livestock integration project in the world, where over 130,000 beef cattle are raised.

Paulo França (“The Big Czech”) is a pilot from Paraná who has been in the Bom Futuro group for 18 years. A close friend of the Zanoni family, he has been helping the Zanoni develop new solutions for agricultural aviation.

The fields are so large that anyone can get lost in the vastness, and are protected by a fleet of 17 Air Tractors, which is led by Paulo França, also known as Tchecão (“The Big Czech”). Paulo has been working there for almost two decades. He is a close friend to Sergio Zanoni (CEO of the Zanoni) and many of his ideas and demands led to some paradigm changes in the Brazilian aerial application industry. He tells us a little about his history in ag aviation: “I have been an agricultural pilot for 27 years. My history in aviation is the history of any boy who, since he was a child, has dreamed of being a pilot. And from the beginning, I have identified myself a lot with agricultural aviation because you can see how useful you are to the world.

I started flying for Bom Futuro through

a third party that provided contract service to them, working that way for 7 to 8 years.

At a certain point, as the group grew, they decided to buy their own aircraft and invited me to join as a pilot. I am now completing 18 seasons with them. In the last one, we protected more than 1 million hectares [2.47 million acres, considering the two crop seasons that the region has during the year]”.

The application is made with rates between 0.3 GPA (3 liters/ha) for Malathion on cotton and up to 1 to 1.2 GPA (10 to 12 liters/ha) for insecticide and fungicide in soybeans. The pilot says that in the past there were a lot of regulations on ag aviation operations in the state of Mato Grosso, as the central region of Brazil goes beyond the so-called “ideal application conditions”, due to temperature and humidity. However, the group looked for some way to improve efficiency, adding one or two products that would improve applications: “That’s where Low Volume in Oil (BVO) came in, which is the addition of 0.1 GPA [1 liter/ha] of vegetable oil to the load. We started using BVO in 2002.

There was better efficiency and we were able to increase the application window, without falling short in the quality of the application.

The use of BVO in Mato Grosso compromises 100% of our work due to the efficiency of the droplets not evaporating and the better adhesion of the droplet to the plant. During our season, it rains a lot and the water washes the plant, but the oil prevents that.

Tchecão has been working with Zanoni on a new rotary atomizer specifically for the AT-602 and AT-802. He shared with us some details about the project: “For many years, we’ve heard it was impossible to work with this kind of nozzle in those larger aircraft. Everybody used to say that high speed compromised the droplet spectrum. We tested different application solutions from different brands and here we are. I’ve been working with Sérgio for 18 years and we have managed to develop a lot of interesting stuff for the ag aviation industry. This time will be no different.

They [Zanoni] came here and we managed to find a common denominator, and now we are doing the agronomic research. I’ve been doing different simulations at different times for ten days in a row (at night, dawn, in the morning) with the best analysis tools available on the market. Although the tests are still preliminary, we are seeing the best possible result with this new development for all kinds of applications, including insecticides and fungicides.

It was a difficult job, and took us some time and research, but this is how the industry evolves. We must look at the future, propose and be open to innovations.

We still have companies manufacturing products with technology from the 1970’s or 1980’s and aircraft are using it just because it comes from outside the country.

But, I can say that this development we’ve done together here in Brazil has a global standard of excellence. It is important to have people who like our industry like us, who are engaged and who want to see things evolve. People who go out into the field and see what’s happening in the real world, people who accept suggestions and criticisms to change and improve”.

Rodrigo Mesquita Bueno also has experience in different types of applications in different regions of Brazil.

He started his career in commercial aviation in 1999 and started flying agriculturally in 2007 in multiple types of aircraft including a Pawnee, Embraer Ipanema 201 and 202, Cessna Agwagon, Ag Truck and Ag Husky and now an Air Tractor from the Grupo DB. He worked one season in Bahia (with soybeans and cotton), three in Rio Grande do Sul (with rice), three in Goiás (with sugarcane, soybeans and corn) and is now finishing the seventh season in Minas Gerais.

Grupo DB is an agribusiness company with operations in Minas Gerais (southeast Brazil), in the regions of Alto Paranaíba and in the Northern part of the state. Founded in 1976, Décio Bruxel grows high quality coffee, cotton, soy, corn, beans, sorghum, wheat, rice and tomatoes. They also raise beef and swine cattle and work with animal and plant genetics. It is a prominent organization in Brazil in areas of development and precision, having partnerships with several research and quality certification institutions in the country.

Rodrigo currently treats 13 of their farms, three being in the north of the state that require more than an hour ferry from its central base, which is close to the city of Patos de Minas. Initially, this caused a problem with the durability of rotary atomizers, as they run much

longer than usual operations due to the length of the aircraft ferry. Their spray season runs 11 months out of the year. In 2017, the durability of the atomizers was greatly improved and solved the short lifespan issue.

He highlighted that, because the region has an immense variety of crops (according to him, everything except rice and sugarcane are planted there), technologies that offer a wide range of different flows are required. For example, a specific insecticide for cotton is sprayed with application rates of 0.2 GPA (2 liter/ ha) and in tomatoes the foliar application is at 3 GPA (30 liter/ha).

“The rotary atomizer has made our life a lot easier. We have already tested several application solutions, with Air Tractors and Embraer Ipanemas, and this was the one that best stood up to our pace”.

Rodrigo highlighted the role that the investment in research played in his operation. He points out that through many studies, spray clinics, dialogue with farmers and evaluation of results in the field, he has managed to find a standard of excellence for his aerial application work.

“A spray clinic was done with our equipment and it showed a very considerable uniformity of droplet size for applications. We did studies with an application rate rate of 0.2 GPA (2 liter/ ha), which carries no water, only one liter of product and one liter of oil derived from cottonseed. An application aimed specifically at the cotton boll weevil, it had a very considerable effectiveness. We got swaths from 30 to 33 meters (98ft – 108ft) here. advantage of working directly with the farmers. We’ve been explaining, looking for improvements, doing tests and lowering the application rates. I arrived here in 2013, the company outsourced the service and they used to work with application rates of 2 to 3 GPA (20 to 30 liters/ha). I asked for some areas to be tested with lower flows.

One example was corn. Here we have a big pig farm, so they use a lot of corn to feed them. I came from Goiás, where I used to work with an application rate of 0.8 GPA (8 liter/ha) in corn. At first, they were hesitant of the proposal, but already in the first year everything was done using these parameters. It worked - application quality improved, application time improved and concentration changed.

Cotton was sprayed with rates between 0.8 to 0.6 GPA (8 and 6 liters/ha) and they had a lot of regulatory restriction moving to 0.2 GPA (2 liter/ha). Until at one point, due to the amount of cotton, they accepted the tests to spray 0.2 GPA (2 liter/ha) with pure product (Malathion UL, a specific insecticide whose label recommends this application rate). Initially with mineral oil, then with agricultural oil and now in the last two years we are using oil derived from the cottonseed, which is attractive to the insect”.

Finally, Rodrigo told us some more specific details about working with different crops: “The cotton application window is from 9am to 4pm due to the floral opening of the cotton bud, which is when the insect is most active on the crop. At this time of day the boll weevil (“bicudo do algodoeiro”, a very common beetle in Brazilian cotton crop) leaves the bottom of the plant and you can catch it. Its life cycle is very voracious.

It is a condition that if you are not acutely aware, if you do not have the effectiveness, the speed of application, it is easy to lose control. So the 0.2 GPA (2 liter/ha) application rate made the effectiveness of the treatment just sensational.

Later we came to use 0.2 GPA (2 liter/ ha) in corn, too, to fight the leafhopper (“cigarrinha do milho”). It is a flying insect, which also lays eggs very quickly and you can easily lose control of the corn crop.

Finally, we went with those special applications on coffee. The coffee culture is accustomed to working with very high application rates, between 30 to 40 GPA (300 and 400 liters/ha). With the aircraft we are spraying 0.8 to 1 GPA (8 to 10 liters/ ha), when the leaf is too heavy I make up to 2 GPA (20 liters/ha). All with atomizers. I did tests with other types of applications and nozzles, and in my opinion working with 1 GPA (10 liters/ha) on the rotary atomizer gave us the best results. I also spray with 0.2 GPA (2 liters/ha) on coffee to catch the moth of the Minas Gerais (“mariposa do bicho mineiro”), the main plague on coffee crops today. The results have been spectacular in controlling the moth flocks”.

Carlos then started working for his father-in-law, who is a farmer and started to make 100% of his applications with aircraft. Together with his wife’s family, Carlos started an agricultural aviation company with an Embraer Ipanema 201 and then acquired an Air Tractor AT-402. They started to provide services to other farmers in the region of Lucas Rio Verde, Nova Mutum and Sorriso, today considered one of the largest grain producing centers in the world.

The company sold the old Ipanema and bought two new Embraer 203s, spraying corn, cotton and soybeans, pastures and eucalyptus. In the last season, they treated 240,000 hectares in the region (almost 600,000 acres), mostly with BVO (low volume with oil) applications. ➤

Carlos says that since he entered ag aviation as a pilot, he has always used rotary atomizers only needing hydraulic nozzles to spray herbicides with higher application rates. Carlos highlights that the main reasons are the quality of the application (both due to the uniformity of the swath width and the uniformity of the droplet spectrum), the aircraft’s efficiency and the versatility of the nozzle (which allows working with lower flows for insecticides and slightly higher flows for fungicides). He shared some of his perspectives about this type of operation: “We always try to work with lower application rates, depending on the weather. From early morning until 9 am, you have better performance depending on the type of application. We are doing several tests with different application rates until we are able to find the best possible result. We work with 0.3 to 0.5 GPA (3 to 5 liters/ha) for insecticides and about 0.8 to 1 GPA (8 and 10 liters/ ha) for the fungicide, and the results are getting better and better. Nowadays, with the technologies that we have been adding and using, from DGPS equipment, a good spray system, rotary atomizers and all the instrumentation for perfect calibration (for swath width and droplet size), we are optimizing the aircraft and our work. “

agricultural aviation industry. If SINDAG (the Brazilian association of agricultural aviation companies) had a hall of fame like the US, he would certainly deserve to be there.

Alan started his career in 1973, flying charter for five years. In 1979, he started making aerial applications for a farm in Pelotas (state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil) and in 1981 he joined an agricultural aviation company, called Mirim Aviação Agrícola. With the exception of 1983, when Alan flew corporate in the state of Pará (northern Brazil, in the Amazon region), he stayed with the company until 1992. He then formed the company Taim Aero Agrícola, located in the same city of Pelotas.

With extensive experience using the Embraer family of ag aircraft, he was one of the pilots who contributed to the advancement of the aircraft over the next decade, performing the first tests of the Ipanema 202 for Neiva (the old manufacturer of this aircraft, which was bought by Embraer). Poulsen also helped to develop a spreader for this kind of aircraft (the “gaucho swathmaster”), which is now widely used in Brazil.

When we talk about application technology, Poulsen stands out for being the forerunner in the use of an electrostatic system in South America. He introduced the use of this technology in the region in 2001, in partnership with Spectrum Electrostatic System (from Houston, Texas).

For two decades, the company has been carrying out work with rotary atomizers, arguably making him one of the most experienced operators in the world. Alan highlights some features of this type of operation:

Taim currently treats pastures and rice, soy, wheat and cotton with liquid and dry applications. The company also provides some aerial firefighting services in an ecological reserve, which is a peculiar case because it successfully uses smaller aircraft than what is considered the norm. Poulsen also is currently one of SINDAG’s directors, responsible for operational safety in agricultural aviation.

“I have been working with this for two decades, with very satisfactory results.

The use of electrostatic technology allowed us some very significant gains. First, the possibility of working with thinner droplets increases application efficiency, giving us greater coverage. The electrostatic charge ensures greater uniformity in droplet size.

We have done extensive research over the years, managing to see a better deposition of droplets when compared to conventional applications. With lower application rates, typically working with 1 GPA (10 liters/ha), I have also achieved significant operational gain with my aircraft and a reduction in the use of water.

Poulsen is responsible for developing a partnership between Spectrum from the USA and Zanoni from Brazil. The two companies are developing a new system for aerial applications using electrostatic technology that is more modern and more efficient than traditional application methods. Alan has been flying this new technology for a few years and a study recently conducted at Taim has just received the “scientific award” from SINDAG in 2021. Led by Professor Alfran Tellechea Martini, a group of agronomists analyzed the impact of the electrostatic system on fungicide drift.

“It’s great to see the result of serious and well-done research, like these two we did here at Taim. It is through our experience in the field and through those studies that we are able to see what works and what does not. Where there is room for improvement and how we can share good practices with others in agricultural aviation. That’s how the industry evolves”.

In his operation, Anderson works with application rates of 1.5 GPA (15 liters/ha) for foliar fertilization, 1 GPA (10 liters/ha) for insecticide. With fungicide, it is common to spray 1 GPA (10 liters/ha) at the beginning of the cycle, and, after 70 to 80 days, they move to 1.5 GPA (15 liters/ha).

The main crops that Anderson serves in Piaui are soybeans, corn and rice, spraying foliar fertilizer, insecticide and fungicide. He says that he always used rotary atomizers and says he has nothing to complain about it: “We have been working in this way for six years and this was a record year. I flew 125,000 hectares (300,000 acres) and we had a 50% gain in productivity compared to previous years. By maintaining this type of service, we managed to control both pests and diseases. We had no outbreak issues of any kind.”.

We need to show that the work is serious, that it is always in constant evolution. Agricultural aviation is growing a lot here in Brazil and we are presenting the day-to-day of aerial application. Sabri and Henrique Campos Henrique Campos is a Brazilian agronomist with a Master and PhD in Pesticide Application Technology from the São Paulo State University (UNESP), one of the most prestigious Brazilian institutions in agronomic research. His main areas of research are adjuvants, spray nozzles and techniques for drift mitigation, having also studied at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and being an international analyst to the NAAREF Operation S.A.F.E. Campos is associated with Sabri, a Brazilian consulting company that brings together several PhDs from the most varied fields related to agriculture. Among the company’s list of associates are some of the biggest global manufacturers of ground sprayers, drones, ceramic nozzles, adjuvants and agrochemicals, inductors, mixing tanks and digital technologies.

We see operators in Brazil working with these nozzles from ultra-low volume to applications with 2 to 3 GPA (20 and 30 liters/ha). You can produce from very fine to coarse droplets with great uniformity depending on your need, thus achieving a great balance between operational efficiency and safety.

We know that there is great reluctance to work with lower volumes due to drift issues and it does make sense. But I like to say that any professional work must always follow the middle path, without radicalizing to any side or the other, always looking pragmatically at the results. Spray drift is also related to the presence of sensitive crops, therefore understanding the environment is essential for drift mitigation. And we are seeing great outcomes in Brazil, both in terms of application quality and in terms of health and environmental safety”.

In the US, his work focuses on applications of fungicides and insecticides across the country in the most diverse types of crops imaginable.

In the last two decades, the Brazilian grain production grew 210%, compared to the world production increasing only 60%. It is estimated that the Brazilian grain production could surpass 500 million tons by 2050. Brazil has gone from a food importer to one of the largest producers of oranges, coffee and soybeans as well as chicken, beef and sugar, becoming the third largest agricultural exporter in the world.

The “Mastery of Tropical Agriculture” or the “Conquest of the Brazilian Midwest”, this recent boom in the Brazilian countryside, reminds us of the Westward movement in the USA; many hard working men opening frontiers and establishing farms to produce food. But a century later, Brazil has had the benefit of US technologies. All over the countryside, you will see a lot of John Deere tractors, Ford and GM trucks and Air Tractor and Thrush aircraft caring for the crops. Many Brazilian agronomists have been able to learn from American experts through student exchanges and partnerships between research institutions.

Today, Brazilian agriculture benefits from this integration between the two countries and the American agricultural industry has also gained from the bilateral exchange of technologies and knowledge. It is now common to see Brazilian developments contribute to US agriculture and agribusiness and vice versa. Instead of competitors, the two countries are part of the same Americas, the only continent capable of guaranteeing food security in a world with increasing demand.

The Agricultural Aviation industry is also part of this modern advancement; from aircraft manufacturers, to developers of application technologies, agrochemical suppliers, expert agronomists and even pilots - working both in the southern and northern seasons, the US and Brazil have the two largest agricultural aircraft fleets on the planet. The AT-802A-0900 ferry pilot left the Air Tractor headquarters in Olney, Texas, on June 9 to ferry the airplane across the Pacific Ocean to Australia.

The aircraft arrived at Dunn Aviation in midJune. Dunn also purchased AT-802A-0905, soon to arrive at Dunn’s base in Ballidu. Both airplanes are configured as single-engine air tankers (SEAT) for aerial firefighting. The singleseat fire bombers are equipped with Air Tractor’s new Gen III Fire Response Delivery System fire gate. Serial number -0900 is also the very first AT-802 series airplane equipped with Air Tractor’s XFlow ram air induction filter system. Both airplanes are powered by the 1600 SHP Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A67F turbine engine.

One reason why Dunn Aviation has become the largest ag operator in Western Australia is that they offer a wide range of services, including firefighting, pest and disease control, baiting, fertilizing, seeding, oil slick pollution control, mine site dust suppression, and revegetation. They provide more services and more ways to generate

income in the rugged, hardscrabble region.

Dunn’s father, Ian Dunn, founded the company in Ballidu in 1965. The elder Dunn provided spraying services for cereal crops with one 790-liter capacity IMCO CallAir A-9. Other operators in the region were using converted de Havilland Tiger Moth airplanes at the time. From that initial CallAir, the company went to four Piper Pawnees, then to six Cessna AGwagons. Farmers in 1977 started growing legumes in Western Australia amongst their cereal crops so the ultra low volume spraying in the area soon disappeared.

“My father had a colorful history,” Dunn recalls.

“He had never got his pilot’s license until 1961.

From 1947 when he began barnstorming to 1961, no license. And to top it off, they said, to prepare the new license, you had to send them two photos.

One photo is to be on file. And one photo is on the license. Dad only had two photos of himself. So, one was him standing there. And another one was him with his arm around a Jersey cow, for which he’d won the blue ribbon. Which one did they put on his license? Well, of course, the one with his arm around the jersey cow.”

Neville Dunn comes from a family of pilots.

“Dad had five children with our mother: four boys and a girl. We all either fly or operate aircraft,” Dunn said. “So, an aircraft to our family was like a family car. I started flying in 1984. By 1988 I was

flying ag on night cotton operations on the east side of our country.

I did 16 summer night seasons and would return home to conduct the winter/spring spraying on the West Coast. During this time, I gained 15,000 hours of ag experience, predominantly in AT-502 aircraft.”

Dunn bought his first Air Tractor in 1997, an AT-502B, and has been a believer in Air Tractor planes since. “It’s just the reliability of the Air Tractor and the service network behind it,” Dunn said.

Dunn recalls helping Air Tractor founder Leland Snow with airplane improvements. “American operators were probably doing about 500 hours a year on their airplanes, on average.

But we were doing a thousand. So, if something was going to break, it happened here first. Then we would be ringing up

Leland saying, ‘Oh, this here is cracked, and that’s wearing out…’ And Leland would make it a bit stronger. It was part of Air Tractor’s product improvements -- constant product improvement.”

Today, Dunn Aviation employs 15 pilots with a mixture of year-round and seasonal services including aerial spraying, firefighting, and providing environmental services for mining companies. Some pilots move around doing fires only; some pilots travel as far as Canada or China for agricultural work. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 25

For agricultural spraying, they operate in a 300mile long by 150-mile-wide area of Western Australia. For firefighting and environmental work, the company operates statewide.

Dunn was among the early adopters of the AT-802F “single-engine air tanker.” For Dunn, it was part of the evolution of the industry.

“During the early ‘90s, my father lobbied the state government to start aerial firefighting. My father and I purchased one radial Dromader each.

However, it became apparent very quickly that maintenance and lack of support meant we had to buy another one just to have spare parts,” Dunn recalled. “In 1996, we commenced the first trial of aerial firefighting in our state using ‘rapid initial attack’ and targeting the head fire to slow the rate of spread. The tactics were very successful.

Our government studied our operation over several years, and the cost-to-benefit ratio for the community was excellent. Eventually, we grew to 7 Dromader aircraft.”

In 2000, Dunn conducted aerial firefighting on the East Coast in very mountainous terrain with his AT-602 and worked alongside an AT-802 operated by Col Pay of Pays Air Service. Pay was a distinguished operator in Australia. “Col was the

first owner of an AT 802 in Australia and at that time he also had a P-51 Mustang, Kittyhawk P-40, and Supermarine Spitfire in his hangar. So when Col spoke, us young guys listened. He said that the AT-802 was the best aircraft he had ever owned. It was very clear that the AT-802F was the aircraft to have,” Dunn recalls.

In 2001 Dunn sold his AT-602 to an operator in New Zealand and purchased a new AT-802, S/N -0105. “The AUD to USD exchange rate was 53 cents in those days. This AT-802 was by far the most expensive agricultural aircraft in Australia at the time. In 2004 I purchased my second AT-802 and demonstrated the 802s to our state government, and they could see the cost-to-performance benefit in comparison to the Dromader aircraft.”

In 2004 Dunn began phasing out the Dromaders in his fleet. In 2008 Dunn purchased 802 S/N 0300. “In 2010 we went to all turbine Air Tractors.

In 2015 we went all AT-802Fs. And in 2021, we have gone all AT-802F’s with PT6A-67F engines.”

It was an important move. “Our dryland seasonal agricultural business operates only during winter/spring,” he said. “Our focus on aerial firefighting spawned from the idea of continuous ➤

year-round work, allowing us to amortize capital outlays and retain our core employees year round,” noted Dunn.

To run a versatile operation like this, training is vital. Dunn said that all his flight training is done in-house. “We start juniors in our Cessna AGhusky and then they move on to the AT-401, then into an AT-502 doing agricultural work,” he said.

The company’s AT-504 is pivotal in the operation. The 2014 model AT-504 has flown about 800 hours, Dunn reports. “For fire training, we have fitted a Transland fire gate to the AT-504 and trained the pilots with this aircraft. Having side-by-side seating is excellent for both trainee and supervisor. They train at actual wildfires together for several hours in the AT-504 before going to AT-802. We have a full dual control dual instrumentation AT-802 for the next step up from

the AT-504. We don’t do actual fire training in this aircraft -- only simulated work as visibility is somewhat limited for the supervisor in the rear seat.”

As bushfires become more frequent in Australia, Dunn believes the use of rapid initial attack strategy is essential to Australia’s aerial firefighting system. “I would like to see more rapid initial attack on the East coast of Australia—and globally for that matter. It absolutely works, and is cost-tobenefit effective,” said Dunn.

It’s assured that both AT-802A-0900 and -0905 air tankers will see action soon enough in today’s intensifying environment. NAAA Releases Book of the Century!

NAAA has released the book of the century—a century of agricultural aviation, that is.

One hundred years ago, an aerial crop dusting experiment spawned the birth of the agricultural aviation industry. To commemorate agricultural aviation’s 100th anniversary, NAAA is pleased to present Agriculture’s Air Force: 100 Years of Aerial Application.

Agriculture’s Air Force provides a new, updated account of aerial application’s history, 35 years after Mabry Anderson’s masterpiece, Low & Slow: An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation, was published. NAAA’s meticulously sourced book is based on a collective history of the agricultural aviation industry based on material from Agricultural Aviation, AgAir Update, Low & Slow and other resources.

Beginning with the last issue, Agricultural Aviation has been publishing excerpts from Agriculture’s Air Force and will continue to do so through the next issue in the fall. What a day, what a year, what a century! All three of those statements applied on Aug. 3, 2021, on the official date of the aerial application industry’s 100th anniversary.

The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) marked the momentous occasion by hosting a special event to commemorate the industry’s centennial. Agriculture and aviation industry leaders gathered at Leesburg Executive Airport outside Washington, D.C., on Aug. 3 to reflect on a hundred years of innovation that enabled agricultural aviators to not only survive but thrive. In turn, their clientele—farmers, ranchers, foresters, firefighters, mosquito control authorities and society writ large—thrived with them.

NAAA hosted approximately 60 people at ProJet Aviation’s hangar at the Leesburg, Virginia, airport, including distinguished representatives from various segments of the aerial application industry, VIPs in the ag and aviation industries, government officials from the USDA and Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, local officials, and members of the media. On Aug. 3, 1921, Lt. John A. Macready flew a Curtiss JN-6 from McCook Field in Ohio to a nearby catalpa grove while Etienne Dormoy manually dispensed lead arsenate over the grove to kill sphinx moth larvae. In all, the dusting plane passed the grove six times and distributed about 175 pounds of the insecticide. Less than 1% of the insects remained alive on the catalpa trees after six days of observation of the targeted area. The speed, efficiency and overwhelming effectiveness of the aerial dusting experiment spawned the birth of the agricultural aviation industry. Today, the aerial application industry treats 127 million acres or nearly one-third of U.S. cropland with seeds, nutrients and crop protection products.

The industry also fights fires, protects forests and the public health by combating disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Along with remarks from Moore and NAAA President Mark Kimmel, Doug McKalip, a senior advisor to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, spoke

about the importance of aerial application to agriculture. Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk also presented a proclamation from the town congratulating NAAA for the industry’s 100th anniversary and to thank the association for celebrating the centennial in Leesburg.

The star of the 100th anniversary celebration was Disneytoon Studio’s animated movie hero Dusty Crophopper, the “star” of the popular animated feature films Planes and Planes: Fire & Rescue. Thanks to a donation arranged by NAAA on behalf of Rusty and Lea Lindeman, the reallife replica of Dusty will now become part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

Dorothy Cochrane, the Smithsonian’s general aviation curator, accepted the full-sized, fully flight-capable replica of Dusty Crophopper on behalf of the National Air and Space Museum and announced that the Air Tractor AT-301/400A “Dusty Crophopper” would debut as the museum’s newest artifact at its “Innovations in Flight Family Day and Aviation Display” Saturday, Aug. 21.

The centennial celebration culminated with Dusty taking off from Leesburg Executive Airport for a short flight to Dulles International Airport and his new residence at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air and Space Museum, where he will join the Space Shuttle Discovery, SR-71 Blackbird, and other icons of aviation history in the museum’s collection.

ADDITIONAL William O. Marsh, better known as Bill Marsh, served as the third president of the NAAA in 1969.

Marsh was a native Californian who began his ag aviation career hanging around the old Del Paso airport in Sacramento. As early as 1928, Marsh made up his mind to enter a career in ag aviation.

His reasons, the pilots were better paid, they had fewer working hours per year and they were obviously technically superior!

Marsh became better known after successfully operating firms in Mesa and Litchfield Park, Arizona. The Mesa company was known as Aerial Application Technology and the Litchfield Park firm was called Marsh Aviation company.

Marsh was known for his leadership in developing CAM 8. His company also developed one of the very first turbine powered ag aircraft, a Garrett powered Thrush. In 1972, Fairfax Underwriters Services, Inc. established the NAAA award, The William O. Marsh Safety Award, in memory of Marsh, for significant achievements in safety, safety education or for an outstanding operational safety program.

Focus on Nothing But Your Mission: An Accurate and Safe Application

Don’t become a statistic! NTSB has reported 31 ag accidents including 9 fatal accidents so far this year.

It’s easy to get confused about what’s important for being a good ag pilot. Who’s flying the biggest aircraft, who’s turning the fastest, and who’s getting the most acres done seem to be prominent ways to judge success. The reality is none of these are the most important because none of them focus on the mission. The mission for every single aerial application flight should be doing the best quality job possible for the customer in a safe manner that returns you home every night to your family. You may fly the biggest ag aircraft there is and make the fastest turns, but if you don’t provide a quality application and return home safe with an intact aircraft, you failed your mission and could quite possibly end up dead. If something doesn’t relate to the mission, don’t do it.

Buzzing your friends, turning tight to impress onlookers, and videoing yourself for social media are obviously not part of the mission.

It is critical for your operation, your career as an ag pilot, and for the ag aviation industry that you treat every field as if it was your own. If those were your crops you’re about to spray, and your livelihood depended on an effective application to protect them, how would you want the field treated? When you decide how to spray a field, don’t always think about the fastest way you can

get it done. Think instead about what will provide the best results for the grower and the safest application flight for you. Sometimes the best way to treat a target field is not the most productive or profitable, but it allows you to avoid obstacles that present both a risk to your safety and your ability to get the product precisely on target.

Buzzing your friends, turning tight to impress onlookers, and videoing yourself for social media are obviously not part of the mission. They can lead to accidents and complaints and offer no gain to your customer. It doesn’t matter what you’re flying – your mission is always the same: make an accurate and safe application that provides the application your customer needs to maximize their yield and ensures your continued success as a professional ag aviator. Ag aviation is not an airshow, it’s a needed, professional service.

A small engine shop enjoys the luxury of having a few engines in process in the shop at any one time. And, in most cases, this allows the artisan engine builder time to focus on his chosen trade. ➤

Just such an engine shop is Terry’s Ag Sales located in north central Florida. Terry Bosserman, past president of the Florida AAA, is the owner, while Laurie Dicks is the shop foreman. Laurie is assisted by his wife, Delores, literally “in the shop”.

Jerry Clemans attended Emery Riddle who serves as machinist, welder and fabricator. Barry Todd runs the cylinder shop inspecting the cylinders for cracks, removes and installs all valve guides, seats and assembles the cylinder.

Terry’s Ag Sales is not trying to rebuild every engine that is used in ag aviation, not even every R-985 and R-1340. Like the title, The little engine shop that could..., Terry’s Ag Sales concentrates on rebuilding about 10-12 radial engines during the course of a year. That’s the goal and so far, the shop has been able to reach that goal, turning out excellent engine overhauls.

Terry began ag flying in 1974 with a 1976 Ag Truck, then in 1988 bought a 1984 AT-301 that he still owns to this day. Operating under the name Terry’s Ag Service for the flying division, Terry’s season starts in late February and continues to July 4th. At that point all flying ceases for about six weeks. Then Terry’s Ag Service begins its second season of the year the last half of August and continues until Thanksgiving, a two-season a year operation.

peas, and coastal hay grass. The peas and sweet corn make up the majority of the company’s work.

Sweet corn spraying is particularly good, with applications spaced 36 hours apart. Terry says the typical crop will have about 25 applications, but on one occasion he has sprayed a crop 38 times! The spraying on corn is for insect control and fungicide for the potatoes. Terry’s aircraft is outfitted with CP Nozzles.

In 1995, Terry decided it would be a benefit for his operation to form an engine shop, primarily for his AT-301 and a few other radial engine operators in the tri-state region of Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Terry knew just the man to call, Laurie Dicks. Laurie was retired and living on the UP (upper peninsular of Michigan). Terry waited until an unusually cold and snowy day, giving Laurie a call, asking him if he’d like to return to sunny Florida and manage an engine shop. With hands almost too numb to answer the phone, Laurie and Delores accepted the offer.

time, worked within a group of old-timer round engine shops in Sebring, Florida; originally with the Eight Air Depot (later known as Engine Support) in the 60s. From this engine company, many smaller engine companies were formed; George Dumont, Roger Pickett, Dick Ross and, of course, Laurie Dicks. From 1983 until 1993, Laurie operated Dick’s Aircraft Engines in Providence, Florida.

Laurie is no stranger to radial engines or the ag aviation business. And, neither is his wife, Delores.

She works side-by-side with Laurie in the everyday duties of building up an engine and is just as knowledgeable as he is, often traveling with him to assist with field work as well as the daily shop overhauls.

Typically, Terry’s Ag Sales will overhaul the customer’s engine for $18,500, plus any core charges. The shop rebuilds the cylinders with new valve guides, seats and pistons.

This is usually where the bottleneck forms for the engine overhaul turn around time. Even so, an operator should plan on having his engine in the shop as soon as possible after his season or in the fall. Eight to ten weeks later, the operator can expect Terry’s Ag Sales, more specifically Laurie Dicks, to come rolling up in the company’s service truck (specially-designed by Jerry Clemans) to install the engine. The overhaul cost does not include the installation, but Terry’s Ag Sales prefers to install their fresh overhauled engines, just to be sure it is done right.

Although the engine goes through a series of test on the engine test stand at the shop, it is always best for the engine shop to install the engine, or

so Terry and Laurie feel. There are adjustments to be made, particularly with the carburetor. And, it guarantees the customer is satisfied with the engine’s performance.

Each engine comes with a 90-day or 100-hour warranty, whichever comes first. When asked about an engine overhauled but not placed into service immediately, Terry responded by saying it was about as detrimental for the engine to be installed on the airframe and not run it as it would be to operate it; thus, the reason for the 90-day warranty.

Recently, Terry’s Ag Sales has added a couple of spare engines to its inventory. Along with an assortment of radial engine parts. These engines allow Terry’s Ag Sales to offer AOG service to the operator. Of course, these ready to go engines sell for a little more than the customer’s overhauled engine.

When AgAir Update was visiting with Terry’s Ag Sales, Laurie and Delores were preparing for a trip south to Belle Glade. One of their customers needed a service call. That’s right. The folks at Terry’s Ag Sales believe if you build the engine you should offer service for it.

Traveling in the company’s specially-designed service truck, the very people that tightened the nuts, set the seals, checked the clearances, and had a hand in every step of the way of the overhaul, are who comes to service the engine. Laurie can take one look at the engine and know it; much like the customer having his own custom-overhauled engine. Limiting shop overhauls to less than a dozen a year, allows Laurie to become intimate with his engines, know them, and easily “doctor” on them should the need arise.

Gustin, now retired, told us recently about building his first sprayer. “We were groping around in the dark,” he smiled, “ and when it came to finding a pump to use, we settled at first for a cast-iron water well pump that we picked up down in California. It worked fairly well, but it rusted away quickly so we switched over to an old Allison aluminum pump that was a little bit better!

Everything we had was banjo-rigged, but, as we grew into the business, we learned more and more and finally came up with some pretty good rigs for both dusts and spray.”

Pilots who flew for this firm in it’s early days included Gustin, Kenny Wyatt, Jack Houston, Don Schumacher, Buck Erickson, and Wayne Hughes. Many of these men are still around and Don Schumacher operates his own firm today in Lewiston.

A wide variety of crops were treated and Gustin recalls his first parathion job, a material with which

they were totally unfamiliar and deathly afraid!

“I remember,” says Gustin, “that we were literally afraid of the name. But we had to put it out, so we went to work procuring some safety equipment.

“We found some old-fashioned respirators that looked like World War I gas masks. We also found some extra heavy, black, waterproof overalls like firemen used to wear, plus some rubber boots, long rubber gauntlets, and helmets doctored up with rubber to keep the parathion from penetrating!

“On the first job out, we literally had to lift the pilot up into the cockpit! When he finished the job and came in and landed, he stepped out of the cockpit and down to the ground and fell over on the ramp and couldn’t get up! Naturally, we thought that he was poisoned, but it turned out that he just had on so much gear that he couldn’t get up!

“After that, we limited our protective gear somewhat. And down through all of the years ➤

that we used organophosphates, we never had a single instance where anyone was adversely affected by the stuff.”

Gustin strongly influenced farmer acceptance of agricultural flying in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, and became widely known in the Northwest. Although they were not used extensively in agricultural flying, Gustin owned some Bell helicopters and regularly hauled hunting parties in and out of the rough, mountainous terrain of that region. His firm also engaged in forest spraying and was a part of the huge 580,000 acre job in the Salmon, Idaho, region where TBMs, B-25s, and some B-26s were used. Gustin is still vitally concerned with agricultural flying. His son Ron presently operates the firm at Lewiston, Idaho.

Bob Allison, one of Central’s first ag pilots, went with the new firm of Parks and Starr at El Chico, Washington, in 1946. He worked there as an ag pilot until 1948, when he bought the firm and operated it almost exclusively as an agricultural flying company. They operated until 1960 under the original name of Parks and Starr. Then the name was changed to Allison Agricultural Aviation and was permanently based at Connell, Washington. The firm heavily worked row crops and wheat acreage in this vicinity, and also engaged in forest spraying. This pioneer firm is still active under the management of Allison’s son Bill.

Les Mills Perhaps the most influential figure to emerge in the Northwest agricultural flying field was Les Mills. Mills was an early pilot, having begun flying in the 1930s. He may have been the first local pilot to attempt airplane pest control work in Washington, having actually done a job of sorts in 1939 in the vicinity of Pasco.

In Mills’ own words: “An invasion of Mormon crickets hit that area and some of the locals suggested that I try dropping poison bait from my plane. I took them up, loaded a few sacks of bait on board my old Stinson SMSA, sailed out over the area, opened the door, and scattered the bait out by hand as best I could. It actually worked pretty well where it hit the target area. But with no spreading ➤

After working for Central, Mills, along with his pilot friend Jim McVey, left Central to organize the firm of the West-Air Company at Yakima, acquiring a sizable fleet of aircraft that included Wacos, Travel-Airs, and Stearmans. Bruce Coombs, another excellent pilot, was also with the firm and under his leadership it prospered.

However, after about two years, Mills sold his interest and organized his own firm called Les Mills Aircraft, based at Walla Walla and Lacrosse. The West-Air Company continues to operate today at Yakima under the management of Bruce Coombs.

Mills’ operation had a fleet of aircraft consisting of an ASO Waco, a Travel-Air 2000, and two Stearmans. His early pilots were Jack Larkin, Bob Barnes, Ario Osen, and Mills himself. These men, especially Larkin, became legendary figures in the Northwest and helped make this firm a leader in that region. Mills, a superb salesman, figured prominently in the rapid acceptance of ag flying by growers in that area.

Mills’ operation soon expanded into a threebase operation with units at Lacrosse, Othello, and Boardman, Oregon. Much of the work done in the Boardman area was for the fabulous 42,000 acre Pete Taggares Farm, one of the Northwest’s most modem farming miracles.

This same farming enterprise operates another huge spread near Pasco, Washington, called Snake

aviation veteran Bruce Coombs.

River Vineyards. On a recent visit, I watched one of Mills’ pilots, Charlie Wynne, spray one field of Concord grapes containing 1,700 acres! Mills’ firm handles all of the work for this huge operation.

Some of Mills’ current pilots are Charlie Wynne, an authentic old-timer from Greenwood, Mississippi, who began dusting in the 1930s, Harold Lewis, John O’Rourke, and Mark Conner.

Conner, incidentally, is the grandson of Harold Conner, a pilot who was “broken in” to ag flying by Mills in the 1940s at Central Aircraft. Jack Larkin, who has retired from active ag flying, manages the unit for Mills at Othello.

From the beginning, Mills spearheaded a drive to organize Northwestern ag flying firms into cooperative associations and succeeded admirably.

He and his cohorts in these associations were extremely active in influencing legislation that affected the industry in that area.

Mills also worked closely with the National Agricultural Aviation Association from the start.

In 1971 he served outstandingly as its president.

Mills and his firm are still going strong and will undoubtedly continue to strongly influence agricultural aviation in the Northwest.

On Aug. 3, the National Agricultural Aviation Association will present to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum the full-sized, fully flight-capable replica of Dusty Crophopper, star of Disney’s popular 3D computeranimated comedy films, Planes, and Planes: Fire and Rescue.

Dorothy Cochrane, curator of the Air and Space Museum’s General Aviation / Aeronautics Department, will be present to accept Dusty on behalf of the museum, recognizing his symbolic representation of the significance of aerial application to American agriculture. The event in Leesburg, Virginia culminates with Dusty taking off from the airfield there and flying to its new residence at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum. Dusty will join NASA space shuttle Discovery, Bell X-1, Spirit of St. Louis, 1903

Wright Flyer, and other icons of aviation history in the museum’s collection.

Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch says the event and the airplane’s new home at the National Air & Space Museum is an opportunity to “let people learn how agricultural aircraft play a big role in helping feed the world and communicate how we do our job in a professional and responsible way to protect our environment.” He adds, “We are excited that an Air Tractor will represent the modern aerial application industry to the thousands of visitors at the Udvar-Hazy Center each year.”

The real-life Dusty Crophopper airplane began its life as an Air Tractor AT–301 owned by Texas aerial applicator Rusty Lindeman. With much help from Air Tractor, Disney producers and Ultra Productions, Lindeman transformed the airplane into the movie’s lead character, Dusty Crophopper. ➤

“In just six weeks, we rebuilt everything: the fuselage, the wings, and the tail. We replaced the radial piston engine with a Pratt & Whitney PT6A20 turbine engine, and we had a propeller rebuilt,” recalls Rusty Lindeman.

Says Hirsch, “This was both an exciting and challenging special project. The compressed timetable for transforming one Air Tractor model into another — and obtaining the FAA certifications and approvals — meant many long days for our project team. But this was simply an event we could not pass up.”

Lindeman said the likeness to the movie Dusty Crophopper is very accurate, as they worked closely with the filmmakers, and Klay Hall, the movie director. Disney Studios provided pictures from the movie for reference, which were converted into

paint scheme plans. The airplane’s exact colors were specified by Disney to match the on-screen character. Dusty has a white, blue, and orange paint scheme, the number 7 on the back half of the fuselage, and a big D on the tail. A cockpit windshield shade adds Dusty’s big blue eyes.

In the summer of 2013, the Air Tractor Dusty Crophopper airplane, piloted by Rusty Lindeman, zoomed to life as the hero of the hit movie Planes, flying aerial demonstrations for thousands of spectators at air shows across the United States and Canada. Thanks to Rusty and Lea Lindeman’s generous donation of the Dusty AT-400A airplane, it begins its next life. It will entertain and educate aviation enthusiasts about agricultural aviation’s important role in modern agriculture: helping farmers grow food and fiber products for the world.

Saying Goodbye to our Fellow Aviators

Mike Hall Passes Peacefully SIKESTON -Mike Hall, 65, took his final flight home to heaven on Friday, Aug. 6, 2021. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family. He had spent the morning watching westerns with his girls.

Mike was born Feb. 2, 1956, to the late Jim and Sally Hall of La Forge, Missouri. On May 23, 1986, he married Sandy DeWitt Hall who survives.

They were married 35 years. Together they have two children: Ashley (Justin) Palmer and Katlyn (Devin) Bader. He has two brothers, Mark (Sabra) Hall of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and Steve (Michelle) Hall of East Prairie, Missouri. He has three nieces that he helped raise: Sydney Craft, Jessica DeWitt, and Sarah DeWitt. He also had two grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Logan and Molly Palmer.

Mike was known for his strong work ethic and for helping others. He spent 36 years as an Ag Pilot and was respected by all. He served as officer and President of the Missouri Agricultural Aviation Association for 10 years. He was a lifelong member of Mount Calvary Missionary

Baptist Church where he served in many roles, his favorite being the annual fish fry. Mike loved farming, antique tractors, and a good bologna sandwich.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Doug Hall.

Meeting on the first day of the week is a good example for Christians to follow. But you and I know we can’t keep it perfectly; so don’t judge other Christians who don’t do what you can’t do yourself.

“Let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ” (Colossians 2:16-17). It’s sort of dumb to get down on the ground and embrace someone’s shadow, instead of the real person! But many Christians do just that when they embrace the Law of Moses more than their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The Law that God gave to Moses was only a shadow of God’s righteousness that Christians have through faith in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 8:5, 10:1). The Sabbath was a covenant between God and the Jew (Exodus 31:12-13)—it was never given to any of the Gentile Nations.

Trying to keep your relationship with Jesus Christ by ritualistic works is like taking your filthy

clothing and presenting them as an offering to God—our works are as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).

God didn’t honor Abraham’s fleshy work (Genesis 16 &17; Galatians 4:21-31). And He will not honor our fleshly works. A Christian’s righteousness is sealed by the power of God’s Holy Spirit coming to live in them (Ephesians 1:13-14). If you can’t be obedient to God’s Spirit dwelling in you, what makes you think that you can keep the Ten Commandments perfectly in your sinful flesh?

Even your thoughts condemn you (Matthew 5:28).

Christians have no righteousness of their own.

A Christian’s righteousness comes through their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. God has made Jesus Christ to be sin for us (John 1:29), who knew no sin (Hebrews 4:15); that we might be made the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ

(2 Corinthians 5:21). Christians don’t need to keep the Mosaic Law to enter into God’s heaven or maintain their fellowship with Jesus Christ (John 11:25, 14:6; Romans 3:21-30, 10:913). Christians are to live by faith (Romans 1:17). Just before Jesus died on the Cross, He said, “It is finished!” What was finished? Jesus Christ finished the work of fulfilling all God’s laws (Matthew 5:17) and dying for the sins of the people who put their faith in Him as their Lord and Savior.

Jesus Christ is the author of eternal salvation unto all that obey Him (Hebrews 5:9). Jesus Christ has taken His seat at the right hand of God in the heavens (Hebrews 8:1). To think that we can add anything to what Jesus Christ has done for us on His Cross by keeping any of the rituals of the Old Testament law is worse than ignorance—it’s the height of arrogance. If God needs our works to help make us righteous then Jesus Christ died needlessly (Galatians 2:21). Paul said, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells…This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief” (Romans 7:18, 1 Timothy 1:15).

A police officer gives a person a speeding ticket, but suddenly the person dies of a heart attack; do you think the speeding ticket is going to be enforced? Of course not! The person can’t be punished for speeding—he is dead! “Now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound” (Roman 7:6). Christians are free from the penalty of the Law, but that doesn’t give us an excuse to live a sinful life. Christians are a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17), and we’re commanded to life our life to please God (Ephesians 4:1). Jesus arose from the dead on the first day of the week (John 20:1). Christians met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2). Christians are to assemble together to exhort one another (Hebrews 10:25).

Jesus said that where two or more are gathered together in His name, He is with them (Matthew 18:20). Jesus was with the two men on the Emmaus Road (Luke 24:13); Jesus Christ will be with you at any time and any place— if you will ask Him. The problems with using legalistic methods and spiritual experiences to secure our place in God’s heaven is that it bypasses true and living faith in Jesus Christ. It’s spiritual foolishness when Christians try to improve their relationship with Jesus Christ by using some sort of works righteousness. We need to remember that sinful humans creates the distance, but it’s Jesus Christ who builds the bridge. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Jesus said that you can’t serve two masters, you have to hate one to serve the other (Matthew 6:24). Jesus Christ jealously longs for us to fellowship with Him by the power of His Spirit (James 4:5). It should thrill our hearts to know

that Jesus Christ is jealous when our hearts and minds are on earthly things, legalistic methods and mystical things, rather than on Him. True Christian humility is realizing that everything we are and everything we have for all eternity, comes from Jesus Christ.

Christians have the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ, we have God’s Holy Spirit and we have the Word of God. Peter said, “Jesus Christ’s divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3). Christians shouldn’t be deceived by so-called spiritual elitist with their legalism, mysticism and human traditions that have no eternal value. Faith in Jesus Christ gives us eternal life in God’s heaven—that’s all we need.

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA148 Date: March 5, 2021, Location: Moorhead, MS Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-402B Injuries: None The pilot left Inverness, MS with a load, headed to Moorhead, MS to finish a field that was not finished before the ice storm.

When he arrived at the field he started a pass from north to south, jumping numerous obstacles while diving over a patch of woods, the sun was bright and there was a power line running east and west about 100 hards out in the field.

He did not see the wire until it was too late to jump over it. He struck the top of the wires and pole at that time. The pole was sticking through the wing, locking both ailerons, breaking the spar. He was afraid to dump the load, thinking it may pull the wing off. He struggled to land the aircraft loaded but was able to do so.

Ag Pilots fly many different fields each day. They should always circle around every field to check for obstacles, before proceeding to work in that field. The electric companies, may erect new power lines and poles, from season to season, that they may not be aware of, as well as cell towers.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA212 Date: May 10, 2021, Location: Norris City, IL Aircraft: RICHARDS HEAVYLIFT HELO INC UH-1H Injuries: None The pilot reported that after landing on a trailer landing pad for the purpose of hot refueling and loading chemical product onboard, on completing those actions, the helicopter slid backwards off the trailer impacting the ground. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and tail boom. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operations. The operator reported that the helicopter’s center of gravity required that both skid cross tubes be positioned over the landing pad, which required B 36 | agairupdate.com

the front cross tube to be placed precisely near the front of the landing pad. The ground crew and pilot were unsure of the helicopter’s position when it landed but recognized that it was possibly too far aft. Following the accident, the operator installed extensions to the landing pad to provide a larger landing area for the helicopter.

Probable Cause and Findings—The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s improper positioning of the helicopter on the landing pad, and his failure to monitor and control the helicopter as fuel and chemical product were loaded, which led to the helicopter tipping and sliding off the landing pad, and subsequently impacting the ground.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA237 Date: May 27, 2021 Location: Celina, OH Aircraft: Grumman G164 Injuries: Serious A Grumman G-164B airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Celina, Ohio. The pilot sustained serious injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial-application flight.

The pilot stated that he departed on the local flight with about 80 gallons of Jet-A aviation fuel and a 240-gallon mixture of fungicide and insecticide. The winds were light out of the east with a few clouds 3,000-4,000 ft above ground level. The pilot stated that shortly after takeoff from runway 8 he felt the engine lose thrust, but the engine speed remained at 100% according to the airplane’s cockpit indicator.

The pilot established best glide speed and began a slight right turn to avoid trees. He then jettisoned the chemical load in attempt to maintain altitude, but the airplane descended into a waterway about 200 yards south of the departure end of runway 8.

An examination of the propeller revealed it remained attached to the engine propeller shaft flange, and all three blades remained attached to the propeller assembly. All three blades exhibited leading edge gouging, chordwise/rotational scoring on both camber and face sides, bending aft and ➤

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses

twisting towards low pitch (Figure 1). All three blades had 3-5 inches of the tip fractured/separated. All observed damage was consistent with impact while the propeller was rotating under power and with high impact forces.

NTSB Identification: CEN21FA270 Date: June 15, 2021 Location: Paragould, AR Aircraft: Air Tractor 502B Injuries: Fatal An Air Tractor AT-502B airplane was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Paragould, Arkansas. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 agricultural flight.

A witness reported that he observed the airplane about one mile away flying directly toward him. It was straight and level, about treetop height. Without warning, he observed a small puff of white smoke; the airplane immediately nosed down and impacted the ground. A post-crash fire ensued.

The operator reported that, on the day of the accident, a second airplane had been flying in the vicinity of the accident airplane. Both airplanes were going to and from the same loader throughout the day. Both airplanes had dispersed about 28 loads of fertilizer; during which, the accident pilot did not report any anomalies with the airplane. Shortly before the accident, the accident airplane was loaded with full fuel and fertilizer. It was actively spraying a field when the second pilot departed the area to refill fertilizer. When the second pilot returned, he observed the airplane burning on the ground about 0.5 miles east of the field it was spraying.

The airplane was recovered to a secure location for further examination.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA287 Date: June 20, 2021 Location: Sedgwick, AR Aircraft: Grumman G164 Injuries: None A Grumman G-164B airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Sedgwick, Arkansas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerialapplication flight.

The pilot stated that he did not observe any anomalies during his preflight inspection, there was no contamination observed in fuel samples obtained from both airframe fuel filter canisters, and that he departed on the local flight with about 60 gallons of Jet-A aviation fuel and 2,300 lbs of dry urea fertilizer.

The pilot reported that he had completed 5-6 aerial-application passes over the intended rice field when the airplane had a total loss of engine power while in level flight. The pilot remarked that the sound of the engine went from normal to silent in conjunction with the total loss of engine power. The airplane impacted a levee and nosed over during the forced landing. The airplane’s empennage, aft fuselage, and engine mounts were substantially damaged during the accident.

The engine was subsequently removed from the airframe and shipped to the manufacturer where a detailed examination will be completed.

NTSB Identification: ERA21LA269 Date: June 25, 2021 Location: Alpine, AL Aircraft: GARLICK HELICOPTERS INC OH58A+ Injuries: Fatal A Garlick Helicopters OH-58+ was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident in Alpine, Alabama.

The pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was being operated as a Title 14 Code

of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

The pilot was spraying fungicide on a corn field when the accident occurred.

Examination of the accident site indicated that the helicopter had struck a fiber optic cable that was co-located with a span of high voltage transmission lines on the south side of the field, and then had impacted terrain about 415’ from the initial strike with the fiber optic cable.

Further examination of the accident site revealed that a debris path existed which contained a piece of cable in a tree near the south side of the field, and a section of bent cable core which had come to rest in the cornfield. This debris path began around the area of the cable strike and continued on an approximate 300° magnetic heading to where the helicopter had impacted.

The wreckage was retained by the NTSB for further examination.

NTSB Identification: CEN21FA314 Date: July 12, 2021 Location: Seiling, OK Aircraft: PZL Mielec M18 Injuries: Fatal A PZL Mielec M-18A “Dromader” airplane was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Seiling, Oklahoma. The pilot was fatally injured.

The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight.

The airplane impacted a pasture about 1/2-mile north of the field being worked. The main wreckage consisted of the fuselage, engine, right wing, and empennage. A ground impact depression, oriented toward the northwest, was located immediately adjacent to the main wreckage. The left wing had separated and was located about 120 ft northeast of the main wreckage. The flight controls remained attached to the airframe with the

exception of the right aileron and the outboard portion of the left elevator; both were located at the accident site.

An on-scene examination indicated that the left-wing main and rear spars had separated from the center wing structure. A preliminary visual examination of the left-wing main spar lower attachment revealed a fatigue crack that progressed through approximately 90% of the lower lug cross section with the remaining section fracturing in overstress. The separated upper lug fracture surface exhibited features consistent with overstress fracture. A metallurgical examination is pending.

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA319 Date: July 13, 2021 Location: Carroll, IA Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-401 Injuries: Minor An Air Tractor Inc. sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Carroll, Iowa. The pilot received minor injuries. The airplane was operated under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 as an aerial application flight.

The pilot stated that he completed half of the planned aerial application of a field when the engine quit coming out of a turn.

The pilot then performed a forced landing. The airplane impacted terrain and sustained substantial damage to its wings.

The airplane was retained for further examination.

The initial report indicated that the airplane’s engine lost power shortly after departure from runway 22. The airplane was loaded with 420 gallons of fungicide and climbed to about 30 ft above ground level before the engine lost power. The airplane settled back onto the runway before it departed off the end of the runway and into a cornfield. The airplane nosed over and came to rest inverted. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and wings.

The airplane wreckage was retained for further examination.

An unscheduled engine removal can cost up to US$125,000 or more. Unscheduled accessory removal, troubleshooting and parts replaced during scheduled line maintenance can run thousands of dollars as can a mobile repair team response during an AOG event. The P&WCSMART Subscription Service, which starts at US$7,500 per engine per year, helps make maintenance expenses predictable, affordable, and worry-free.

Customers also benefit from digital engine health management insights, which can help reduce or avoid events altogether. The program is fully transferable should the engine/aircraft be sold during the subscription term.

It is very satisfying to see Brazil leading the way in new pesticide application technologies on row crops. I do believe that we have a lot to teach the world about this subject. We have many foreign partners interested in knowing better what is going on here and we can certainly contribute to that. On the other hand, I think there is a lot of room for us to bring foreign experiences to Brazil with special low-volume operations.

Together with the Hatfield family (Turbine Conversions), we have been carrying out several successful jobs with mosquito control operations in the USA and with forest management in Canada. PT6A-41 850 SHP Thrush.

N2249U, has been completely rebuilt from the spinner to the end of the rudder. We put the fuselage in our jig and replaced all the tubing from the cockpit back and upgraded to the later stronger longeron sizes. We installed all the factory beef up kits to the forward fuselage. We rebuilt the wings and installed new spar caps, rebuilt the factory metal tail, made new fuselage side panels and installed with crosspoint s.s. fasteners, we painted the aircraft with high solids Alumigrip polyurethane paint, we replaced windows, we installed a dropped stainless spray system we installed a cool seat with new covers and a Hooker harness, We installed the Cascade front end conversion kit with the 14” longer mount, we installed the MVP50T glass panel in the new upper center instrument panel, we installed a new Dyna Nav Vektor Max GPS, we installed a new KAWAK throttle quadrant, it has a radio and Harbour air conditioning, it has vortex generators, 192 gallon fuel capacity with bottom loading, it has nav/strobe/landing and taxi lights, and a 525 gal hopper. The engine is a King Air takeoff with approximately 4000 hours since P&W factory overhaul and 10 hours since hot section and test cell run. The High Performance 4 bladed Hartzell prop has 10 hours since new.

The aircraft is fast, hauls a full hopper load, gets off the ground quickly, turns extremely well, and is a delight to fly.
