The little acorn germinating and taking root, shooting up from the ground, growing first into a sapling and then into a huge tree was not exempt from the obstacles and trials of every living thing It had its share of setbacks An unthinking foot may have trod on it, or even a threat from pests However, the threats to its growth made it resilient and strong With every adversity, challenge and obstacle we face, we become stronger, resilient, and even more we search for innovative and new ways to overcome It takes focus, commitment, and time to build strong foundations, and steady steps
Have you ever looked at a tree and pondered on its growth? Where did it come from? How does it nourish itself? The acorn, a tiny, little seed, germinated, nurtured in the arms of mother nature, nourished by the rain, kissed by the sun, has grown into a huge tree, spreading its branches far and wide opening to the birds of the air, to nestle, to shelter and perhaps, even comfort a little child Consider that, from watching his colleagues floundering to speak out their ideas, Dr Ralph Chesnut Smedley started a small club to get his colleagues to speak out From this little club grew the Toastmasters movement which helps many of us to discover our voice One hundred years thereon, Toastmasters is now in 141 countries with a membership strength of 350,000 nurturing, encouraging and empowering individuals to become better communicators and developing leaders.
Even as you muse over the adversities and obstacles, recall the little victories and achievements and recognize how they made you stronger and more resilient
“When you undervalue what you do, the world will undervalue who you are ”
Quote by Oprah Winfrey Appreciation of oneself is an important learning curve because when we appreciate ourselves, we can learn to appreciate the works of those around us
When you look at your life, and what you do, and think, you are just a small fish in a big pond, making ripples, that do not have an impact on your surroundings, pause, breathe, and think of the little acorn which grows into a huge oak tree All great things, started with small ideas, nurtured, and nourished, and grew into what it is today.
Let me take this moment to appreciate the efforts of the club officers and members of AATSL Emerging Toastmasters Club who strive to grow strong and vibrant engaging the lives of those near and far Warm regards, ROSANNE RANASINGHE

Q1: What inspired you to join Toastmasters, and how did your journey start?
In 2009, while lecturing at the university, I was training students for a national business and finance competition During the sessions, a Toastmaster provided feedback on their delivery and stage presence The transformation was striking what began as an ordinary presentation evolved into a winning one This sparked my curiosity about the process, and I wanted to become a better mentor for my students Soon after, a senior MBA colleague invited me to a Toastmasters meeting, and I seized the opportunity, knowing it was the perfect place to start my journey
Q2: Can you share a memorable milestone from your Toastmasters journey?
There have been so many memorable milestones in my Toastmasters journey I joined in 2011, and looking back, a few moments really stand out. I remember delivering my Icebreaker speech, taking on my first role at an installation ceremony, and stepping into my first club officer role.
Since then, I’ve held thirteen consecutive leadership positions, and each year has been a chance to grow and learn. I can still vividly remember every bit of it. Every moment has felt significant, like a moment of truth, and I cherish all the memories
A recent memorable milestone was carrying our national flag at the Toastmasters International Convention in 2024 in Anaheim, California, with representatives from 149 countries Another unforgettable memory from that convention was watching our district champion, DTM Ravi, compete as a finalist in the 2024 World Championship of Public Speaking (WCPS).
Q3 What challenges did you face on your path to becoming a Toastmaster and District Director, and how did you overcome them?
The initial challenge I faced in Toastmasters was staying committed. When I first joined, I wasn’t very regular with attending meetings But with consistent follow-ups and support from fellow members, I became more engaged and consistent
My leadership journey spans thirteen consecutive positions I started as Vice President of Membership, then moved on to Vice President of Education, Club President, District Retention Chair, Area Director, District Extension Chair, Division Director, Assistant Club Growth Director, Club Growth Director, Program Quality Director, and finally District Director Each position built on the last and taught me new qualities and skills of leadership.
In my early leadership roles, there were times I doubted whether I was ready for more responsibility and almost gave up However, there was always a mentor or Toastmaster who encouraged me to take on positions like Area Director and Division Director These roles helped me realize the value of leadership
Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t give up, because I wouldn’t have had the chance to serve as District Director or gained the knowledge and skills I now have
I remember when I first took on leadership roles, it was hard to focus and understand what was expected of me. But by attending trainings, following the Toastmasters leadership manual, and being guided by the program’s principles, I gradually learned how to focus on my duties, stay accountable, and embrace our core values
I’ve learned that the key to overcoming leadership challenges is staying committed to the purpose and focusing on the principles of the Toastmasters program. When we follow these principles, we can turn challenges into opportunities to grow. These simple practices have helped me evolve into the leader I am today
Q4: How do you manage the demands of your role while balancing your personal and professional commitments?
At first, balancing Toastmasters with my professional and personal life was a challenge because it wasn’t my top priority. But over time, I realized it’s all about prioritizing what truly matters When you're passionate about something, you make time for it. As a lecturer, my university work is my priority, and I also used to consider my personal life as a priority. However, over time, I’ve found ways to balance everything Interestingly, the word "busy" has gradually disappeared from my vocabulary. Once I realized that it’s about prioritizing and managing my mindset, time management became much easier. With a clear focus, balancing everything is not as difficult as it once seemed.

Q5: What are the qualities or skills that you think make a successful Toastmaster?
To become a successful Toastmaster, the key is commitment commitment to the Toastmaster Promise and the core values of Integrity, Respect, Service, and Excellence
When you join Toastmasters, you embark on a journey of self-improvement, both personally and professionally
Q6: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is all about YOU your growth, your development, and your potential. Often, we prioritize everything else in life except our own improvement
But to truly benefit from Toastmasters, you have to make yourself a priority Staying committed to the Toastmaster Promise is essential, as it lays the foundation for your growth
Toastmasters empower individuals by providing a platform for both personal and professional development We offer the resources, opportunities, and environment, but it's up to you to seize them Think of it like planting a Chinese bamboo tree: You nurture the seeds underground, and for years, it seems like nothing is happening Then, suddenly, the tree shoots up sixty feet toward the sky Similarly, in Toastmasters, every speech you give, every role you take on, and every piece of feedback you receive plants seeds of growth Over time, this consistent effort builds your confidence, shapes your communication skills, and refines your leadership abilities. This journey isn’t instant it requires patience, trust in the process, and faith in you By staying committed, showing up, and giving your best, you’ll unlock your potential and grow in ways you never imagined.

The ability to shift my language and tone ensured that everyone felt heard and included, creating a more inclusive atmosphere.
Volunteering has always been close to my heart With over 50 hours dedicated as a student volunteer at the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation, I have had the privilege to witness how impactful communication can truly change lives Reflecting on this journey, I realize that my experiences in Toastmasters have been instrumental in shaping my effectiveness as a volunteer Toastmasters provided me with essential communication and leadership skills, enabling me to connect better with diverse audiences, share ideas effectively, and approach each role with empathy and respect Connecting with a Diverse Community
My volunteer work frequently involves interacting with people from all walks of life, especially while promoting awareness at events like the annual "Run & Walk" for Alzheimer's Toastmasters training in crafting clear and engaging messages helped me connect with participants and supporters. I learned to adjust my speaking style depending on the audience, whether addressing families, caregivers, or the elderly
As a student volunteer, I was often required to address groups, whether during awareness sessions or in community gatherings My initial experiences with public speaking were filled with anxiety. However, regular practice at Toastmasters sessions helped me become more comfortable speaking in front of others Through its structured evaluations and supportive feedback, Toastmasters taught me how to handle public speaking with poise, ensuring I could deliver my messages effectively even in challenging environments This was invaluable when representing the foundation at events, as I could confidently advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness and our mission.

One of the most profound ways Toastmasters benefited me was by strengthening my leadership abilities Through various roles within the club, I learned how to coordinate and lead a team effectively, skills that directly translated to my work at the foundation I took on leadership responsibilities, managing volunteer schedules, and organizing small events, all while making sure everyone felt motivated and valued This experience not only honed my organizational skills bu taught me the importance of active lis and empathy traits essential for any especially in a volunteer setting
Toastmasters: More Than Just a Club
Toastmasters has been more than a pu speaking club; it has been a foundation personal and professional developmen taught me that communication is not ju about speaking but about connecting, understanding, and building bridges. Th turn, made me a more effective and compassionate volunteer, helping me s communities with empathy and purpos Moreover, Toastmasters became more than just a club for me it became a family. In those meetings, I walked in as a stranger, yet was welcomed with such warmth and support that I quickly felt at home Each person I met brought something unique, and this kindness and camaraderie created a space where I could grow, express myself, and connect deeply.
This sense of belonging was so profound that I carried it into my work at the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation Meeting new faces at the foundation, I instinctively saw each person as part of my extended family With every interaction, my dedication grew; I didn’t just see Alzheimer's as a cause, but as a community that I belonged to, one I cared for deeply

That experience at Toastmasters taught me that even among strangers, love and understanding can blossom, and it became the foundation for how I approached my volunteer work giving more with each new encounter, building connections, and knowing each interaction was a chance to extend that family spirit

As the Club Treasurer of AATSL Emerging Toastmasters Club, I am excited to share how I have embraced technology to enhance our club’s operations. By integrating AI tools like Chat GPT into my workflow, I have streamlined the process of generating meeting minutes Traditionally, compiling and distributing minutes could take several days, often leading to delays in sharing important information with our members. However, with the capabilities of AI, I can now produce detailed and accurate meeting minutes within just 2 to 3 days of our gatherings.

Special Training for Club Exco:Region 13 Advisor’s visit 2024(October 12,2024)
On October 12, 2024, I walked into the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) in Borella, having registered just two days prior, uncertain about what lay ahead What awaited me was a remarkable encounter a special training session for our Toastmasters Club executive committee, led by none other than Boopathy Sankar Pallavapuram, DTM, Region 13 Advisor, who had come all the way from India
The day began with introductions and icebreaker activities, creating a vibrant energy as we met fellow members and district leaders. Boopathy Sankar Pallavapuram, DTM, took center stage, diving deep into the principles of effective leadership and ways to enhance club dynamics
Through his insights, we learned how each executive committee member can contribute to a thriving club environment. This wasn’t just theoretical advice; it was hands-on guidance from an experienced leader in our region, a rare opportunity to learn directly from a Regional Advisor

The event was packed with memorable activities In one engaging skit, our team performed a short drama envisioning how the Titanic could have been saved if its captain had been a Toastmaster. I took on the role of the captain, and our group placed second with this creative performance a true highlight! We also took part in a challenging 2-minute storytelling activity with partners, pushing our spontaneity and storytelling skills to the next level.
The awards segment honored newly joined Toastmasters with badges, and a veteran member received a commemorative pin for her longstanding contributions, inspiring everyone in attendance. We wrapped up with a delightful lunch, and for me, a valuable new network of friends and mentors
As the event concluded with a hearty lunch, we found ourselves not only full from the meal but also enriched with insights and connections that will fuel our journey as leaders This special training wasn’t just a day of activities it was a transformative experience, leaving each of us more inspired and better equipped to lead our clubs to new heights. Walking away, I felt a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that we’re part of a global community that fosters growth, camaraderie, and an unwavering commitment to excellence

The wisdom shared by
Pallavapuram, DTM, will surely guide us forward, turning our ambitions into achievements as we navigate the exciting path ahead

Improving speaking skills can make a big difference in how people respond to you, both personally and professionally. Toastmasters has proven techniques for building confidence and creating memorable impressions on an audience I’ll share my top tips for enhancing speaking skills, inspired by my own journey as a Toastmaster. Whether I’m giving a prepared presentation, delivering an impromptu speech, or handling meeting roles, Toastmasters provides countless ways to improve Here’s what I’ve learned along the way.
Ø Embrace Preparation: Preparation is the foundation of any successful speech or role Toastmasters has taught me that crafting a message and rehearsing it thoroughly brings not only clarity but also confidence Before stepping on stage, I map out my key points, practice transitions, and make sure I know my material inside and out. For instance, when I took on my first “Toastmaster of the day “role, I prepared thoroughly due to nerves. That preparation helped me not only overcome my fear but also led to my winning the Best Role Player award that day.
Ø Connect with Your Audience: The best speakers don't just talk—they connect Eye contact, open body language, and making content with the audience can transform a speech Since joining an online club, I make a point to look at the camera when presenting, and I like it when the audience keeps their cameras on. These personal touches create relationships, making the message more relatable and engaging
Ø Use Pauses to Your Advantage: Early on, I was guilty of rushing through my speeches to finish quickly, hardly pausing to take a breath Through Toastmasters, I discovered the power of pauses allowing silence to work for me Pausing gives the audience time to absorb key points, lending weight to my words Now, I use pauses strategically to highlight important ideas, a technique that has significantly improved keep listeners engaged
Ø Keep Learning and Growing: No matter how experienced, every speaker can improve I make it a point to record my every speech and feedback from the speech evaluators This habit has been a gamechanger, allowing me to reflect on my performance and spot areas for growth Toastmasters’ meetings are the perfect opportunity to continually refine these skills in a supportive environment
Ø Telling memorable stories: Nothing resonates with an audience quite like a welltold story. Personal stories, especially, have a way of drawing the audience in and making a message stick. I try to link personal experiences into every speech, finding that my audience remembers my message better when it's grounded in real-life moments. Stories are the bridge between speaker and listener, turning words into experiences. TM IROSHANI
Public speaking is frequently one of the greatest fears individuals faces, alongside heights and spiders However, for members of Toastmasters International, this fear is transformed into a valuable skill, empowering individuals to share their voices confidently. Over the years, we have witnessed remarkable transformations among our members, all thanks to the supportive environment fostered by our club
Consider the journey of a newcomer who used to stand before others with shaking hands and a wobbly voice Speaking in front of others felt scary, like entering a dark room. But with hard work and help from other members, this person started to face their fears Each speech became a chance to turn nervousness into interesting talks filled with personal stories. Now, that once-nervous speaker speaks confidently and often helps new members, showing how much someone can grow in the club
Another member initially approached the club with a deep aversion to public speaking, avoiding situations that required presentation. Driven to break through this barrier, they fully embraced the Toastmasters experience and found a nurturing community committed to supporting their growth As they progressed, every speech served as a stepping stone not only to enhance their speaking skills but also to build self-esteem Today, they confidently share insights at various events, inspiring others and proving that transformation is achievable.
These stories highlight the profound impact Toastmasters has on its members. The club’s structured environment provides a safe space for practice, along with constructive and supportive feedback. The camaraderie among members fosters an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels valued.
Beyond public speaking, Toastmasters also cultivates leadership skills Members learn to facilitate discussions, provide evaluations, and take on administrative roles This comprehensive approach enhances public speaking abilities while instilling qualities of effective leadership.
For anyone grappling with stage fright, Toastmasters offers not only a platform for practice but also a community dedicated to growth. Embrace the challenge, step into the spotlight, and watch as you transform into a confident communicator Join us and let your voice be heard!

I came to know about AATSL Club through a friend I met in an online class, which encouraged me to join For the past few years, I had been wanting to become a member, but stepping out of my comfort zone was a challenge Now, I’m truly happy with my decision
On my first day, I joined the club for a Diwali celebration and was warmly welcomed by everyone. This positive experience has motivated me to look forward to improving my communication and leadership skills. I’m excited to work with such a supportive and enthusiastic group.

Joining the AATSL Emerging Toastmasters Club was an exciting experience. At my very first meeting, I felt warmly welcomed by the members, who were incredibly supportive and friendly. I had the unique opportunity to serve as the Toastmaster of the Day, a role that felt daunting initially. However, with the guidance and advice from the experienced Toastmasters, I was able to conduct the meeting confidently. Their encouragement created a welcoming environment, making it easier for me to grow and improve The club's supportive atmosphere and commitment to enhancing communication skills make it a golden opportunity for anyone looking to develop personally and professionally I feel truly blessed to have joined, and I'm confident it was a wise decision that will positively impact my journey
My journey with Toastmasters began as a timid soul, my voice muffled by self-doubt The mere thought of public speaking sent shivers down my spine Yet, I yearned for a platform to express myself confidently, to connect with others, and to leave a lasting impression
It was in Toastmasters that I found the courage to step out of my comfort zone. The supportive environment, coupled with structured guidance, provided the perfect springboard for my transformation. Each meeting was a new opportunity to challenge myself, to learn from seasoned speakers, and to receive constructive feedback
I remember my first speech, a nerve-wracking experience that left me trembling. But as I delivered subsequent speeches, I noticed a gradual shift in my demeanor.

My voice grew stronger, my words more articulate, and my stage presence more commanding.
Beyond public speaking, Toastmasters honed my leadership skills. I took on various roles within the club, from serving as a meeting evaluator to leading a project. These experiences taught me the importance of teamwork, delegation, and effective communication.
One of the most significant benefits of Toastmasters has been the lifelong friendships I've forged. The camaraderie among members is truly inspiring. We celebrate each other's successes, offer support during challenges, and motivate one another to reach new heights
