Ed Chapa was a fiercely passionate man with big aspirations and a love for the arts. What started as a simple thought shared with his wife, Mary, grew into a vision that was realized with the inception of the Aurora. The dream to open a quaint community theater on the Southside of Corpus Christi became a driving force in Ed’s life, and his dedication to the cause served as an inspiration to all he met.

The success of the Aurora lives on as a testament to the strength of his vision and of his faith in the many volunteers and community supporters who gave of their time and hearts as much as he gave of his.

A Note From the Executive
Horror Show has long been a tradition at the Aurora, and our season would not be complete without the opportunity and the thrill of letting loose along with some of our favorite and outrageous characters. Now, let’s savor the opportunity to leave our humdrum lives in the past –even if it’s for a short while. The night positively promises to chill, thrill, and fulfill

“Don’t Dream It, Be It.” For almost 50 years, this lyric has defined the philosophy of Rocky Horror. For me (a 13-year-old who stayed awake way past my bedtime to watch a midnight showing), it became a lifeline in a world where to be “different” was dangerous. Written at the peak of a social and sexual revolution, Dr. Frank N. Furter’s refrain was embraced by fans who celebrated the liberation from traditional boundaries and the

intoxicating empowerment of radical individualism. Generations later, this mantra has been enshrined not just by a cultish fring but by our society at large. Today, what was once exotic, is exemplified. To be, rather than to dream, is now regarded as an inalienable right. However, Rocky Horror ends not with Frank’s triumph to self-actualization but with a bitter and prophetic warning. Janet mourns a world where “Superheroes come to feast, to taste the flesh not yet deceased,” and the narrator reminds us that we are “insects called the human race, lost in time and space and meaning.” Is this not our world, where we know everything and believe nothing? Brad and Janet are our Adam and Eve, expelled naked from paradise after tasting the forbidden fruit of knowledge. As in every hero’s journey, the final step on the path from innocence to experience is the realization that one can never return to the home left behind. But for one night, perhaps we can take a time warp. It’s just a jump to the left, back to the sights and sounds of that vanished world. And then, a step to the right into the brave new world crafted by the good doctor and his spiritual heirs. Join us in the dance, but beware that it doesn’t drive you insane…well…maybe a little Thankinsane….you
Aurora Arts Theatre, my wonderful production crew and amazing cast for believing in me and for allowing me to rediscover the musical that rose tinted my world.

Thank you Mary Chapa for this theatre which has been home to me for over ten years. Thank you to our director, Laurie, for giving me this opportunity. To this cast, thank you for supporting me and everyone behind the scenes for helping make this show happen. Lastly... I want to thank Doug Holcomb, Lori Bryant, Corey Ranson, and now Laurie for being able to do this role in each of your productions. When I first did this role, I was laughed at on opening night and several shows thereafter for not being the norm everyone sees for the role. I made it my own and by the grace of God and all of the support of my friends and family I went from being laughed at to getting cheers on my first entrance.
