Ahavath Achim cultivates a Jewish community of purposeful belonging. We inspire and support spiritual journeys by deepening relationships with one another. We believe it is at the crossroads of our spiritual paths that life’s purpose and G-d might be found.
Ahavath Achim creates a vibrant, inclusive, spiritual community that empowers individuals to connect Jewishly beyond themselves.
AA embraces interfaith families who desire to be part of our Jewish community. Our spiritual community serves all who wish to connect with us.
A Message from the President Bonim l’hayom v’machar Building for Today and Tomorrow
By Mark Stern
This is an exciting time for our shul. As we look forward over the next few years, we have a lot to build upon, and I am excited to be a part of the process.
As I referenced in my remarks during the annual meeting, my mom and dad were married in this shul by Rabbi Epstein in 1964. I grew up attending Jr. Congregation, USY, and I was married in the shul. Well, not exactly in the shul. On our wedding day in 1993, the Storm of the Century hit Atlanta. The city was blanketed in snow, so we used four-wheel drive vehicles to pick up Rabbi Goodman and Cantor Goodfriend and bring them to the hotel where we and our guests were snowed in. We managed to have the ceremony at the back of a conference room— the rest is history. Needless to say, many of our family milestones, including our children Ariel, Julia, and Daniel’s B’nai Mitzvah, have occurred at Ahavath Achim Synagogue. This is more than just a shul for me—when I walk into the sanctuary, I feel my family’s presence—it is both nostalgia for my past and my spiritual center in looking toward my future.
As I look forward to the next two years as President, we have set the stage to accomplish even more as a congregation:
Rabbi Rosenthal has prioritized his focus on education, spirituality, and leadership over the next year, and as a board, we are making it our priority as well. We will be looking to hire a full-time education director and expand our educational endeavors with our children, teenagers, young families, empty nesters, and seniors.
We have a growing Kesher program for our 9–12th graders, now named “The Judith and Aaron z”l Alembik Youth Education Program,” and we have a growing Ahava preschool and kindergarten
program with almost 60 students enrolled in the upcoming year.
We will enter the next fiscal year with a balanced budget for the first time in a few years.
We have kicked off our Legacy and Endowment Campaign, which is chaired by Gerry Benjamin and Taylor Smith. Four families have made one million dollar gifts, and we’ve raised $4.7 million in the last five years. You will hear more about this during the year.
We have completed the renovation of not only the Sanctuary but also Srochi Auditorium and, most recently, the Cohen-Kogon Pavilion with leadership from Judy Kogon and Nikki Novotny.
We have expanded the “greening” of our synagogue with a solar power initiative led by Mark Papier.
And so much more.
I look forward to serving you with our new executive committee composed of Adam Hirsch, Josh Hanna, Nikki Novotny, Ryan Posner, Taylor Smith, and, of course, our past president, Gary Alembik, along with our entire board.
I spoke of my parents, who made this shul an integral part of their lives. Tamar and I have made it a part of our and our children’s lives, and I want to make sure the Synagogue continues to remain strong as we continue to Bonim l’hayom v’machar.
A Message from the Rabbi
Owning Our Spiritual Journey
By Laurence Rosenthal
“ Every yesterday, a dream of happiness—and every tomorrow, a vision of hope.” (Kahlil Gibran)
As my family and I begin our sixteenth year in our community, I think about the years that have passed, and I imagine the years that are yet to come. I find myself envisioning in longer terms, longer than a single year in review. A lot has happened, things beyond my wildest dreams.
I have watched my kids grow up with such a special spiritual family. Brooke and I arrived in Atlanta with a toddler and an infant. Now we are navigating high school and touring colleges! I think about my first few months at Ahavath Achim, preparing for the High Holidays and asking people about some sort of alternative service I was tasked with leading. Nobody could give me any information about it, so my new friend Steve Grossman and I just made it up. I think about how that service changed the way we worship at Ahavath Achim and its influence when reimagining the sanctuary.
We have created diverse spiritual experiences, taught so many people, young and old, celebrated and mourned with countless souls. Our congregation’s culture has shifted, so we have been able to welcome so many new people while also embracing many who were with us all along but couldn’t be seen. I think about all my new friends and those I buried. We put forth a new vision statement that talks about purposeful belonging and spiritual journeys. The past is filled with memories of happiness, sorrow, love, and challenges.
Then, I turn towards the future. What is the vision of tomorrow? Five years ago, our synagogue adopted a new vision statement which was written to be open, ambiguous, and intriguing:
Ahavath Achim cultivates a Jewish community of purposeful belonging. We inspire and support spiritual journeys by deepening relationships with one another. We believe it is at the crossroads of our spiritual paths that life’s purpose and G-d might be found.
As vision statements usually work, it wasn’t meant to be a road map but instead an ethos that would permeate everything we do. And it continues to set in. Inspiring, deepening, supporting, and believing are all things that we hope for those who engage with us. At the core of all of this is YOU and your life’s purpose. But the only way to manifest this is by owning our spiritual journey. As our vision of tomorrow continues to be one of hope and optimism, it is time for us to lay out the road ahead, the places where we will truly make our mark in this community and the Jewish world.
Over the next decade, our congregation will strive to bring excellence in the following three areas:
• Spirituality
• Education
• Leadership
Interestingly, these areas almost always overlap. Jewish spirituality is developed through education, learning, and leading. Once learning starts, soon mastery of certain rituals comes to bear. It isn’t long until people find themselves leading our community in spiritual practice. Let me give you an example: Our Bnai Mitzvah program is built on three pillars: (1) Leading the community in spiritual practice, (2) Teaching, and (3) Tikkun Olam. Our children spend time learning prayers, chanting Torah, and reciting a Haftara (selection of the prophetic literature), all for the opportunity to LEAD our congregation in SPIRITUAL practice, i.e., LEADING the service. Then we study together and develop a d’var Torah (i.e., speech) with which to EDUCATE the congregation. Finally, the children plan and execute a Mitzvah Project where they LEAD our community toward building a better world.
Moving forward, these three areas will be where we seek to help each of us find our life’s purpose and purposeful belonging. However, engagement in these three things will look different for each of us. How and when we educate ourselves, what
and where we find spirituality, and how and when to use our leadership voice will vary. Being on this path is where we will meet our future selves and others with strength and confidence.
We have already seen some of this manifested. Over this last decade, we have built an incredible preschool, Ahava Early Learning Center, which is second to none in its physical design, pedagogy, staff, and leadership. Our synagogue spaces have been redesigned to fit the new spiritual and social life that we are creating. Instead of our Torah and prayer leaders being high up and removed from the community, we pray and chant sacred text closer to the people, encouraging physical access and bringing each of us closer to G-d and our Jewish traditions. We have created a new way of communal singing with our Meshorarim, the spiritual singing core that engages individuals and small groups to raise our collective voices in song, prayer, and praise. And by the way, the wonder of our renovated sanctuary space isn’t just felt by us. Our design architects at Siegman & Associates were awarded the 2023 International Faith & Form Award for Religious Architecture & Art, presented by Partners for Sacred Places, for their design and building of our AA sanctuary.
Our event spaces, Cohen-Kogon Pavilion, Srochi Auditorium, Paradies Hall, the Koplin-Borocoff Library, and the Sisterhood Women’s Lounge were refurbished to encourage us to gather in smaller groups, spend more time together, and get to know one another. We continue to improve on the legacy programs that have been part of the foundation of our communal life. We are grateful to the Alembik family for graciously endowing our supplementary education program, now called the Judith and Aaron z”l Alembik Ahavath Achim Youth Education Program. We just graduated another cohort from the revamped Arnovitz Leadership Institute. We have moved our congregation well beyond the brick and mortar of our building because, through the Shirley and Donald Reisman Media Outreach Fund, we are reaching people all over the world with our daily prayer services, holiday and Shabbat prayer, Torah study sessions, the incredible Eizenstat Lecture (this year featuring Israeli President Hertzog!), and much more. Spirituality is found not just in prayer or Jewish tradition but also through our amazing Marilyn Ginsberg Eckstein Cultural Arts music and performance series featuring worldclass performances in the arts.
The manifestations of our tri-path forward are many. All we need is YOU. The path forward will be one where we each own a part of our collective Jewish journey. We do it by coming into the
community at the places that inspire us. From there, we continue to grow ourselves, our spirit, our mind, and our strength. Let us envision a tomorrow that is filled with hope and purpose for ourselves, our community, and the generations to come.
A Nesiah Journey
A Year of Tzedekah and Philanthropy
By Sela Sokol, Layla Klehr, Lola Barden, and Grant Joseph
Over the past year, our Nesiah class has had many conversations and lessons regarding this year’s theme: tzedakah and philanthropy. We have had several discussions about our Jewish obligation to community service, good deeds, and helping the people around us. Along with engaging in in-class participation, we ventured out of the classroom to get active in the community, volunteering and raising money for several causes we believed in.
One way we participated in tzedakah was organizing a bake sale during the Sparks of Light celebration. We all got together as a class and coordinated which goodies we would make, the prices to charge for each, and the decorations for this annual Chanukah party. We also discussed which organizations the money would go to, eventually deciding on the World Wildlife Fund and the National Council of Jewish Women. During the bake sale, we allowed customers to choose which organization their money went to. In the end, we raised a collective 180 dollars, and we donated the money respectively.
Throughout the year, we spent a part of our class time volunteering as Madrichim (guides) for the Kesher program. Instead of receiving the income we made as Madrichim, we chose to donate it. By the end of the year, we had collected funds ($485) to be shared equally among the Sandy Hook Promise, the National Council of Jewish Women, and Trees Atlanta. Not only did this support our tzedakah theme, it also gave us experience and built our sense of responsibility through working with the Kesher program.
As in years past, we concluded our Nesiah 2023–2024 journey with a trip focused on our theme. This year, we traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, to learn of its rich Jewish history and the Jewish philanthropy that helped make it the wonderful place it is today. Feeding into our community service theme, tzedakah, we volunteered at Camp Shalom, teaching kids about our Jewish heroes and making crafts along the way. We also toured Charleston’s historical sites, such as America’s oldest, continuously running synagogue, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, and its captivating cemetery. Along with all of these enlightening activities, we made some time for recreational adventures such as a Charleston-themed escape room, a kayaking
tour, and a Jewish film festival.
From the bake sale at the beginning of the year to our concluding Charleston trip, this year’s Nesiah experience was truly the best it could be, all thanks to the endless help of Kat Shambaugh, Annsley Klehr, and the community formed within Nesiah.
The Nesiah program is generously sponsored by the Judith and Aaron z”l Alembik Ahavath Achim Youth Education Program.
