Ahavath Achim creates a vibrant, inclusive, spiritual community that empowers individuals to connect Jewishly beyond themselves.

AA embraces interfaith families who desire to be part of our Jewish community. Our spiritual community serves all who wish to connect with us.

Our Best Days Are Yet to Come A Message from the Senior Rabbi

ear-in-review articles are my favorite to write because they get me out of the weeds and let me see the larger picture of where we have been. This sort of reflection gives me great pride in where we are today and hope for the year to come. We have a lot to be proud of. Our building has been renewed and, by the end of the summer, it will be rededicated. But it’s not just aesthetics. Whereas our magnificent sanctuary served the spiritual needs of its generation, our sanctuary today is speaking to the spiritual authenticity of generations to come who seek a more intimate and accessible relationship with God. The work accomplished in the sanctuary is transformative while also preserving so much of who we are and our sacred journey. We have strengthened the bones of our spiritual home as well—plumbing, roof, electrical wiring, fire prevention apparatus, and lavatories have been installed, upgraded, and replaced to ensure that our internal systems will continue working for another 70 years. Our spiritual life has a new energy and spirit. Voices are louder as we empower more people to sing and participate in our services. We are more mindful and intentional with our spiritual offerings. And our connections are stronger to one another as we move away from a programming model of engagement and towards a relational way of being together in the community. Through our Marilyn Ginsberg Eckstein Cultural Arts endowment gift, we have increased the musical offerings of our congregation through community concerts, artists-in-residence programs, and the publication of original spiritual music, which is being distributed worldwide. Our daily minyan, Shabbat, and holiday services are thriving as we have embraced the virtual world and found meaningful ways of bringing in-person and online experiences together. And just recently, with another generous gift from the Reisman family, we have now integrated our audio-visual system in the Ellman Chapel with the new system in the sanctuary, offering us more flexibility to create spiritual experiences online and in-person. Our learning and educational efforts have increased as we have found more ways to educate and learn together. We have a learning opportunity every day of the week at AA and more of us are participating. We are also exploring new ways of sharing our tradition and Jewish wisdom through

Yvideo content, our new e-blast, and other social media platforms.

Our community is growing as we have welcomed many new members of all stripes. We have become more inclusive while also delineating our own boundaries and traditions. We have opened our arms to people of other faith traditions who are an essential part of building Jewish homes while clearly stating how each of us leans into the Jewish experience and sacred rituals. We are in the midst of a congregational assessment to better understand how we can support people of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity, and we are exploring our role and responsibilities within Atlanta to heal race relations in our community and support people of color and Jews of Color. As antisemitism increases, our congregation has partnered with national organizations to create our AA Synagogue Response to Antisemitism, creating opportunities within our congregation for education and advocacy while also participating in local efforts to fight hate through our state legislation and support of local programs like the Marist School/Brendan Murphy’s course on the historical roots of antisemitism. We have also found ways to fight antisemitism spiritually. Along with the re-dedication of our sanctuary, our congregation (through the leadership of the Goldstein family in honor of their parents, Betty and Leon Goldstein) is repairing and renewing a Torah scroll stolen by the Nazis and rescued by generations of advocates and lovers of Judaism, Jewish tradition, and the Jewish people. This Torah scroll will join our other special Torah saved from the horror of the Holocaust by Lola and Rubin Lansky and renewed a few years ago by their children, Karen and Andrew Edlin, which is now back in Torah reading circulation.

In the year to come, we will witness the rededication of our sanctuary, the renewal of a Torah, the redesign of two more spaces within our synagogue, Cohen/Kogon Pavilion and Srochi Auditorium, a focus on our congregation’s endowment fund to ensure our continuation and legacy, a congregational trip to Israel, and much more.

Of course, we have trials ahead but in these past years, we have seen a new sort of leadership that has looked further out into the future and taken on the challenges of tomorrow, today. As my friend, teacher, and past president of our wonderful congregation, Gerry Benjamin, has said, “Our best days at AA are still ahead of us.” I’m proud of what we have accomplished this year and excited about our best days ahead. Let’s go get them!

A Message from the Executive Director

t is hard to believe that a year has passed since I last sat down to write an article for our year-end Beineinu! Last year I presented a graphic analysis of revenue and expenses, and many people have requested that I do the same for this current year. Although we have not quite finished the financial year at the time of this writing, we are only a few weeks away from year-end, and I can project with a good degree of certainty how we will end up at the end of June 2023.

The good news is that, despite forecasting a budget shortfall of around $170,000, thanks to the incredible support and generosity of YOU, our beloved community, we are on track to balance our budget once again.

IAs you can see, unallocated revenue represents approximately 65% of revenues collected. Dues, security fees and fundraising (Chai program, Yom Kippur appeal, fundraisers, etc.) make up the bulk of unallocated revenue.

This is how our expenses broke down:

As can be seen above, expenses related to the upkeep, maintenance, and utilities of our facility represent approximately 25% of expenses. In addition, as indicated in the chart below, salaries represent more than half of our fixed costs. If you add in administration expenses to include mailing, banking, computer, and network expenses, etc., as well as the cost of kiddush and the High Holy days, at least 80% of our expenses are not discretionary and are mostly contractual and/or fixed.

Salary Breakdown

Formal and informal ed (incl teachers) $145,000

We are incredibly blessed to have emerged from the challenge of the last few years with so many incredible opportunities and accomplishments. The Sanctuary renovation project is finally completed, much-needed repairs to our plumbing and infrastructure are nearing completion, membership has grown over the last year, our endowment has grown, and so much more. Achieving financial success going forward can’t be accomplished solely via expense control. We will always require incremental revenues. Thus, we need your help. You can help balance the budget and ensure quality service delivery by making sure to pay your dues and other obligations in a timely manner.

Supporting a congregation is not charity, any more than providing for your household is charity. Charity is what we do for others; we contribute to synagogues because it is important to us to have a religious institution to which we belong and which we can attend. Synagogue membership is an obligation for anyone who values Jewish communal life. The Synagogue is open 365 days a year and is there not only to provide three services per day but also to be there for you in times of need, of G-d forbid, bereavement, but also to celebrate simchas, graduations, etc. The Synagogue is not a country club but a community. In conclusion, I am excited and honored to once again serve our community.

The best is yet to come!

A Message from the Past Director of Education

Kesher Memories

has been an exciting year for youth and family programming at Ahavath Achim! We joyfully welcomed hundreds of children and their families to our High Holiday services and a diverse range of programming. Inspired by our overarching theme of the year, “What sweetness tastes like,” our High Holiday activities revolved around the enchanting world of bees and their delectable nectar. We welcomed an enthusiastic beekeeper who captivated the children with her beekeeper’s attire and mesmerizing honeycombs, sharing the intricate process of honey production with our young learners.

Furthermore, our ongoing programs, Kesher and Nesiah, thrived with dozens of enrolled children. Through engaging and thought-provoking activities, our students delved into the depths of our sacred biblical narratives, forging connections with the characters and asking perceptive questions that revealed their profound insights. They embarked on a quest to comprehend meaningful prayer and dedicated themselves to a comprehensive exploration of the timeless values encapsulated within the teachings of Pirkei Avot. Nesiah, our middle school program, embarked on a captivating journey into the history of Jewish immigration to America, specifically focusing on the rich tapestry of Jewish life in the South. They eagerly anticipate an upcoming trip to New York City this June, where they will visit significant landmarks such as Ellis Island, further solidifying their knowledge through firsthand experiences.

As the year unfolded, December brought us together to celebrate the first night of Chanukah at Sparks of Light. Our hearts were filled with joy as Paradies Hall brimmed with an unprecedented crowd, collectively kindling the first candle. Wayne Neuwirth astounded us all with a memorable

Itfireworks display. Purim PaloozAA, our family Purim party, was out of this world as we gathered on a warm March Day to celebrate with bounce houses, bubbles, games, and popsicles.

As I reflect upon these sweet memories, I am filled with mixed emotions. However, I find solace in knowing that the future of our program rests securely in the capable hands of Annsley Hillman Klehr, who assumes the role of Interim Director.
