he aim of this exercise was to learn from issues in the production of homes and the architectural imagination that emerges as an outcome of perceptions and tangible networks The delivery of housing demands careful consideration on the part of an architect to identify patterns of living and to reciprocate through explorations in spaces for habitation and critical amenities.

The form of the house emerges in response to aspirations of a better quality of living and is improved to a ‘home’ by considering the associations that aid in connecting units in the form of clusters and in turn as a coherent neighbourhood.”

of people predominantly men who migrate to aplag to work on the ship-breaking yards, more often than not they end up staying in slums by the beach which has resulted in a unhealthy and cogested space for workers living there and has also led to rise in crime and anti-social activities.

The building would also accomodate individuals and give them dormitories to live which will also include other services which they might need on account of living away from their families

ii Recretional space and Commercial spaces Recreational and circulation space would be around 40 percent caterning to different needs and usages.

iii Education and Community Center Often children of migrant laborers have high-drop out rates and tend to receive sub-par education. The school will be able to provide them with education and help in reducing child labour.

“T

he Night School is to provide a complete secondary education towards its students and engage in solving problems for the community of Khar-Danda.

The night school is situated in a locality where the level of education among working adults is low, and the drop out rate among the students are high, the night school can help in combating this . Also its day programs can help the people of Khar-Danda to use that space in the day time to develop their skills.

Night School around Mumbai are reducing in number , simply because of lack of funding and a stigma that has gotten attached to them. By including day programs and inviting the surrounding community. The night school can become an integral part of the community of Khar-Danda.”

To engage more people with the night school it was essential that it it didnt strand out too much and would easily blend in.Yet it should be able to crete an environment for learning within itself.

The Central open space allows the students to be cut of from the hustle and bustle of the street and be able to concentrate on their classes.

OFFICE Home made meals will be a part of the day programs which will be delivered to the people living nearby.

As many are working class people and they don’t have time to cook food during the day.

CANTEEN CLASSROOM HOME MADE MEALS Often working professionals in India have a difficulty in communicating, which has become a huge barrier for people despite their educattional qualification.

Language learning will help overcome this barrier.

“The Youth centre is a social and recre-

ational center intended primarily for use of adolescent and youth of 10-24 years of age . The Youth center supports youth to develop their physical, social, emotional and cognitive abilities. The intention of this youth center is to foster urban youth and develop their talents.

The programs in the youth centre offer various activities and spaces to accomodate various programs such as drama Cooking, IT in an area of 2600 Sq. M. Spaces like these are necessary for today’s youth because conventional education system does not have either the infrastructure or initiative for including programs like these.”

CONCEPT The Youth centre is located in the area near Bandra Reclamation which is frequented by youth and is very well connected. As more and more open spaces are being lost to fast development the Youth centre will attract young people to explore their ideas and their talent in a space which is exclusively for the youth.

“The design brief states that a villa is to

be designed on an open plot with an area of 875 Sq. m. of which 40 percent of the area is to be used as the built-up area, the villa is to be a G+2.

This residential structure has multiple bedrooms a large open kitchen and servants quarter. Along with spaces for other activities.

The aim of this project was to understand the various structural components and design with technical considerations costruction details in all the levels from Sub-Surface to the Top of the structure.

This exercise was an attempt to combine unique design ideas, understanding technicalities and executing them.”

“The documentation took place in

Jhuntamara, a small village in Odisha. The trip was to understand the rural building construction technlogies and document them.

The Hamlet had a life which was in stark contrast to the city gave us a parralel view of undertanding the built form.

There was a language barrier between us and the locals, yet we were able to understnd each other and observe their way of building homes.

The documentation of this project won the INTACH Heritage Awards for Excellence in Documentation Of Unprotected Heritage”
