Experience the Impact of Our AADC Community

We are Alumnae-Created

There are many ways we continue to fulfill our mission and see your impact of service and support. During our last fiscal year (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023) we reached a milestone like no other. We successfully launched our next century of success of women supporting women and building on the strength of our great alumnae organization for generations to come. Our inaugural and impactful Women Moving Forward 100th Anniversary Women’s Conference in March was one of the many ways we showed the power of how high we can reach and what we can do when we work together to support women at every phase of life.

We are Alumnae-Led

It is also a special time for me. As our annual report newsletter reaches your homes, I approach my final months as a two-term President of the AADC. I am humbled, inspired, and energized by the leaders of our community, our countless volunteers and the work of our small but mighty staff. It is truly an honor to serve. We all play an integral part in our alumnae organization. I encourage you to cast your vote for some of our next leaders on the Official Ballot included in this issue. Your voice makes an impact.

We are Alumnae-Driven

Our alumnae and friends continue to amaze me. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our AADC community. We shared the phenomenal success last spring of our first-ever women’s conference lead by an outstanding committee of volunteers. We also weathered the disruptions, losses, and changes from the unprecedented pandemic. This year, we saw a blending of how we connect through virtual programs, from AADC Excellence in Equity and Inclusion virtual workshops to network and affinity and regional groups gatherings, to celebrating our signature AADC Alumnae Reunion Weekend on campus. Throughout, we toasted our 101st year of providing events and programs for our diverse alumnae. I invite you to take advantage of the benefits of getting involved and participating.

We are Alumnae-Supported

Your support helps bring our meaningful programs to life and provides opportunities to build connections with the AADC and with each other. As the fiscal year ended, our 100th Anniversary Bright Future Initiative successfully reached its conclusion, and we reported its impact to our AADC community. Through the generous support of alumnae and friends, we raised more than $4M together, nearly double our original goal. I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your continued support. Together we make an impact and fulfill our mission for generations to come.

Highlights from a Year of Moving Forward Towards Our Bright Future

July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023

Through the dedication of our AADC community, we continue to fulfill our mission and make an impact in the lives of our diverse alumnae, near and far. We share highlights during our Fiscal Year July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, in this annual report newsletter. We continued to offer virtual programs and to gather to connect at inperson events again.

We honored 100 powerful years at our inaugural 100th Anniversary Women Movng Forward Women’s Conference hosted in at the Hilton East Brunswick Hotel & Executive Meeting Center in March. Special thanks to conference benefactor the Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation, Inc. and giveaway sponsor Margaret β€œMarty” Gillis ’75. We welcomed nearly 200 alumnae and friends for our day-long dynamic conference featuring keynote speaker Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation and author, as well as top government and healthcare leaders, and remarks by Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway. A variety of inspiring breakout workshop sessions were presented by outstanding speakers and there were many opportunities to network.

Reinvention and Innovation.” We explored the roadblocks and obstacles women face in our new normal rebounding from the pandemic and discovered how to create new boundaries. We paid tribute to benefactor Victoria Dabrowski Schmidt ’42. The Symposium Planning Committee also hosted its annual Vision Board Party at the Ruth Schilling Hennessy Alumnae Center in the spring.

We hosted an AADC Excellence in Inclusion and Equity Initiative virtual workshop during National Hispanic Heritage Month, β€œColorism in the Latine/x Community Virtual Panel.” This program raised awareness and explored the impacts

in remembrance of the late Suzzanne Douglas, his wife, who was a loyal AADC supporter.

We hosted a virtual Smart Talk, Finding Success in the New Economy, featuring Enid Sorkowitz β€˜89 and moderated by AADC Vice President for Administration Lisa Dorio Ruch β€˜89. From a Silicon Valley tech career to running her own online business, our speaker shared how she navigated through challenges to ultimately build a successful career in online reselling.

Our Virtual Zagoren Lecture Honoring Black History Month, β€œStorytelling for Social Change: Stories of Justice & Joy for a More Just Future,” featured Cierra KalerJones ’15, Ph.D., Executive Director of Rethinking Schools, who demonstrated how Black history is woven into and relates to the present. The lecture honors former AADC Executive Director, the late Adelaide Marcus Zagoren β€˜40.

AADC Alumnae Reunion Weekend 2023 returned to campus to celebrate milestone classes and the Class of 1973 on its 50th, starting with the Vanguard Luncheon. We kicked off Saturday’s festivities with the popular Champagne Jazz Brunch, the Classes Processional and special Reunion activities. We partnered with the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC for its Coffee & Chat, hosted at its headquarters. Our exciting 2022 Alumnae Awards Ceremony capped Saturday, followed by our AADC Bright Future Cocktail & Networking Reception in the NJC Lounge.

We hosted the interactive and educational Seventh Annual Victoria Dabrowski Schmidt β€˜42 Workplace and Professional Symposium virtually with its theme, β€œRemoving Boundaries – Radical

of colorism, whose roots are complex and historically entrenched.

The biennial AADC Black Alumnae Network (BAN) Jewel Plummer Cobb Sisters Conference, Embracing Herstory, Progressing in Sisterhood was hosted virtually and celebrated the milestone 40th anniversary of BAN. We featured guest speaker Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, a tireless advocate for women’s causes and the first Black woman to represent New Jersey in Congress. We are continually inspired by the late Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, who served as the first African American Dean of Douglass College. Dr. Roy Jonathan Cobb, her son, paid tribute to her legacy and held a moment of silence

Our fall and spring AADC Alumnae Council meetings were hosted virtually. We feted donors at our Event to Honor AADC Benefactors: Our Bright Future, hosted virtually.

Our regional and affinity networks hosted gatherings. The popular Cabin Fever event with crafts, sweets and more, was hosted by the AADC Bunting Connections Affinity Group & Young Alumnae Network, at the Ruth Schilling Hennessy Alumnae Center. The AADC Washington, D.C. Area Regional Connection Group gathered for lunch at Clyde’s and a guided tour at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., with a special stop to view the oil painting of the former Dean of Douglass College Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb on display. The painting was commissioned by the AADC and was on loan for the exhibit. We welcomed visitors to the patio at β€œthe Cottage,” during our AADC Open House at Rutgers Day. Many enjoyed our ongoing virtual discussions at the Sisterhood Book Club held during the year.

The AADC Moving Forward

Our Mission in Motion

The AADC is an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The AADC develops and promotes connections among Douglass alumnae by providing programs, services, networks and life-long learning opportunities that represent the interests and needs of our diverse alumnae. The AADC provides prudent stewardship of the Douglass Fund and other endowed funds held by the AADC for the benefit of Douglass; distributions from these funds contribute financial support to Douglass and her students.

Important Facts Regarding FY23 Revenue

Received by the AADC and the Douglass Fund

July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023

Contributions to Endowments

AADC

Endowed contributions received by the AADC for FY23 represent 7% of all revenue received.

Douglass Fund

The AADC provides prudent stewardship of the Douglass Fund and other endowed funds held by the AADC for the benefit of Douglass. Distributions from both restricted and unrestricted endowments in the Douglass Fund must be used for the benefit of Douglass Residential College. These distributions contribute significant financial support to Douglass and her students. See page 10.

Pursuant to the terms of the July 2016 Agreement among the AADC, the Douglass Fund and the Rutgers Parties, the AADC could not solicit contributions to the Douglass Fund; however, per the Agreement, certain gifts in progress and bequests that pre-dated the Agreement could be accepted. This Agreement expired on August 20, 2022.

Contributions to the Douglass Fund endowment comprise 3% of all revenue received in FY23. These contributions may be unrestricted or they may be restricted to a certain purpose by the donor.

Non-endowed Restricted Contributions

AADC

Non-endowed restricted contributions may be expended, but only for the purpose for which the donor restricted the gift. In FY23, the AADC received contributions restricted for various alumnae initiatives and non-endowed fellowships that represent 10% of all revenue received.

Investment Income

AADC

AADC Investment Income accounts for 14% of all revenue; it is primarily generated by endowed funds.

FY23 Revenue Received by the AADC and the Douglass Fund

n AADC: $2,026,540

Douglass Fund

n Douglass Fund: $2,383,866

DF Investment Income accounts for 51% of all revenue and is solely generated by the Douglass Fund endowment. Douglass Fund investment income is either restricted or unrestricted based on the contributions that make up the Douglass Fund and the donor stipulations of those funds.

Non-endowed Unrestricted Contributions

AADC

Unrestricted contributions to the AADC represent 14% of all revenue received in FY23. These contributions make it possible for the AADC to fulfill its mission.

Miscellaneous Income

AADC

Miscellaneous Income received by the AADC from sources, such as AmazonSmile, Gift Assessment* and the alumnae travel program, represents 1% of all revenue received in FY23. This income is unrestricted and assists the AADC in fulfilling its purpose.

* The Gift Assessment was eliminated by the AADC effective December 1, 2022.

All financial information is based on Forms 990.

n AADC: $1,295,852

n Douglass Fund: $1,915,975

Additionally, the AADC administers awards programs to honor alumnae and other individuals for service to the AADC, and to honor alumnae for their distinguished careers. The AADC also actively participates in award programs of other organizations, frequently nominating alumnae to be honored.

Communications and Marketing

AADC expenditures represent 4% of all combined FY23 expenditures.

The β€œAADC Newsletter for Alumnae & Friends Annual Report,” the β€œAADC Magazine for Alumnae & Friends,” and the β€œJune 2023 AADC Newsletter for Alumnae & Friends – The Power of Our AADC Community,” were produced and distributed electronically. A hard copy of the Annual Report was also mailed to all contributors. The AADC E-news electronic newsletter was also sent via e-mail each month.

The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College Web site that provides information on programs offered by the AADC, individual class reunions, fellowships for alumnae, class notes, and much more was maintained. The AADC Web site also provides a mechanism for online event registration and for making a gift.

The AADC maintained a presence in social media on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram.

Development & Donor Relations

AADC expenditures represent 6% of all combined FY23 expenditures.

Douglass Fund expenditures represent 3% of all combined FY23 expenditures

The AADC conducted fundraising from alumnae and friends in support of the mission of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College.

This included an annual giving program with phone, direct mail, email, social media, Giving Tuesday, and crowdfunding components. The annual giving phone program includes a phone program consultant who runs the program with oversight from the AADC.

The AADC also has a planned giving program.

The AADC cultivated and stewarded gifts to the AADC Annual Appeal, gifts designated for alumnae initiatives and for alumnae fellowships.

The AADC incurs donor relations expenses, primarily associated with bequests. The AADC also stewards all existing scholarship and program funds in the Douglass Fund.

Administration

AADC expenditures for AADC administration were 4% of all combined FY23 expenditures.

AADC expenditures for Douglass Fund administration were 9% of all combined FY23 expenditures.

AADC salaries and operating expenses are directly allocated (above in Alumnae Relations, Communications and Marketing, and Development and Donor Relations; and here in Administration) to the functions that they serve to the extent possible. Salaries of AADC staff performing functions are allocated to the various functions based on their responsibilities. The payroll taxes and benefits associated with these salaries are allocated, as well. Similarly, a portion of the cost of certain resources required to perform these functions is allocated across the functions. These resources include expenses such as building use fee, office expenses, IT support services and insurance. AADC administration also includes investment management fees for the endowments of the AADC.

Douglass Fund expenditures for Douglass Fund administration were 11% of all combined FY23 expenditures. Investment management fees for the endowments of the Douglass Fund are included here, as well as accounting expenses for preparation of audited financial statements, preparation of Form 990 and various state charitable registrations. In addition, a portion of the stewardship expense is allocated to administration and included here.

College Support

AADC expenditures were 10% of all combined FY23 expenditures.

Douglass Fund expenditures were 47% of all combined FY23 expenditures.

The AADC provides prudent stewardship of the Douglass Fund and other endowed funds held by the AADC for the benefit of Douglass; distributions from these funds contribute financial support to Douglass and her students. In FY23, these distributions included:

β€’ Student support through established scholarships, academic prizes, and special opportunity funding, as well as graduate fellowships for graduating seniors.

β€’ Support for programs such as leadership initiatives; the Douglass Project for Rutgers Women in Math, Science and Engineering and fine arts made possible by restricted endowments.

β€’ Unrestricted funding used by DRC to support Douglass priorities.

Distributions in Fiscal Year 2022-2023 were:

Note: The Douglass Fund Trust was created in 1969 by the AADC for the benefit of Douglass and her students. Non-endowed funds are included in Student Financial Support and Fellowships for alumnae through the AADC.

Endowed funds arise from contributions by a donor who intends to make a lasting gift. The donated contributions are invested to provide an on-going source of funding. Endowed funds are distributed in a manner that is designed to preserve the value of the endowment and generate a predictable stream of available income. The specific use of endowment distributions may be restricted by the donor, or unrestricted.

The donated contributions in a non-endowed fund are utilized in their entirety. When the contributed gift has been expended according to the donor’s wishes, the fund ceases to exist. The specific use of a non-endowed gift may be restricted by the donor, or unrestricted.
