Scholars score PSAT boot camp

The Preliminary SAT boot camp provided a new study opportunity to help increase students’ scores on all three parts of the upcoming exam.

Students start the course at the end of their sophomore year and finish the course in October of their junior year, right before the PSAT administration, which occurred this year on Oct. 11. By the time the boot camp came to an end, students completed a total of 76 preparation hours.

The PSAT boot camp is administered through the tutoring company MindWorks. It was founded on the premise that every high school student deserves to get accepted to their dream college.

“The partnership between Mindworks and Pompano Beach High School was built right away since there were common goals we both wanted to achieve,” Mindworks founder Andrea Catsicas said.

Alley every Thursday after school until 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

However, the trainings did not run cheap. Students paid close to hundreds of dollars for everything that the program included.

Catsicas would not provide the specific cost for this year because the overall cost changes every year, but there is always a cheaper cost for students who have free or reduced lunch and a greater cost for students who do not have free or reduced lunch.

According to Catsicas, the main goal of the camp is for juniors to obtain a score on the PSAT exam that will qualify them for the National Merit Scholarship title.

At the boot camp, students were able to take many practice exams that helped them become familiar with the curriculum on the exam.

“I have learned a lot of additional tips and tricks through going over practice tests with the instructor,” junior Camila Castellano said.

“If a student is weak in a certain area, then the next practice test

that they take will focus more on those concepts,” Catsicas said.

“The more practice tests that a student takes, the more endurance that they will have built to obtain a higher score.”

Before Hurricane Irma carved its way through Florida, every activity, plan and event was put on hold as everyone prepared for the worst.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — A man opened fire on a country music festival from his room in the Mandalay Bay hotel on the Las Vegas Strip on Oct. 1. This was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. He reportedly had upwards of 47 guns in his hotel room. His firearms were outfitted with scopes, tripods and attachments that converted his semi-automatic weapons into automatic weapons.

He set up shop in his hotel room, schlepping his mobile arsenal with him. He loaded multiple weapons, broke open the window, aimed down the sight, put his finger on the trigger and had yet to commit a crime. The absolute insanity of that is baffling.

Commander in Change Liar in Chief fails to makes us great again make any deals By

The United States of America is a business; as corporate and cold as that may seem to refer to our country and home as, it is true.

And in November 2016, when Donald Trump was elected president, it proved that the majority of Americans think so too. Unlike his competitor Hillary Clinton, Trump had no experience in the world of politics; he was never a governor nor a senator nor a mayor, but he did have the experience that matters: business experience.

Worth $3.5 billion according to Forbes, Trump knows how to run a company and profit from it, and that is just what he is doing for the United States. Although the world expected more change at a much faster pace, he was left with the ruins of America after President Barack Obama contributed $7.9 trillion to the national debt.

Housing prices are rising since Trump took office, according to CNN. As of June 2017, the average price for a home was $263,800, 5.8 percent higher than a year ago.

Since Trump took office, the unemployment rate is at an alltime low from the past 16 years, 4.5 percent, according to CNBC. Over 1 million jobs have been created, and in the past 12 months, CNN reports, the average hourly wage has increased 2.5 percent.

No, Trump hasn’t been systematically destroying our country — he has been running our country, boosting our economy, protecting Americans and changing our nation, things that haven’t been done since Obama went into office.

What has Donald Trump actually done? The short answer is: a lot.

He’s announced that the United States would be pulling out of the Paris Climate Accords — a deal the United States was integral in making. He’s rolled back environmental regulations that President Obama set. He’s failed to corral Congress to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

He’s escalated tensions with North Korea.

His crowning non-achievement?

He’s failed, not once, not twice, but three times at one of his prime campaign promises: to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. He is supposed to be the best deal-maker in the country, and yet he has failed to make a single legislative accomplishment.

Keep in mind, both the House and the Senate are controlled by Republicans. The supposed best deal-maker in America can’t make a single deal with members of his own party.

This failure could be for a host of reasons. Foremost of which, he has no political clout.

A majority of Americans have disapproved of his presidency since mid-February. It’s hard to make a deal when nobody likes you.

And, to boot, he’s a pathological liar. According to PolitiFact, about 70 percent of what he states is either “mostly false,” “false” or “pants on fire.”

Satire: Fashion trend should have no place at school

Throughout the history of public schools, the dress code policy has gone through a variety of revisions.

Because of this, students are now able to wear jeans and open-toed shoes, but nearly all can agree that there are some articles of clothing that should never be worn near a school, much less be strutted through the halls day in and day out.

Our current dress code forbids students from wearing shirts that reveal the shoulders, but it does not forbid a recent fashion statement that has shaken the entirety of the school to its core.

“It just doesn’t make sense. They look so much worse than shoulderless shirts,” sophomore Kristina Gosselin said.

The dress code was originally put into place to prevent distractions among the student body, and this issue is causing a bigger ruckus

than exposed shoulders could ever have managed. While shoulders can be easily covered, this worrisome wardrobe is nearly impossible to hide. Girls, in particular, have become more distracted by this look than boys ever were by shoulders. They can’t even bear to look down for fear of seeing such atrocious attire.

“Looking down at people’s feet makes me want to gag. It’s disgusting,” freshman Hadassah Mattos said.

This trend may even have played a part in the recent congestion in the hallways between classes, since students can’t even look at their classmates without fear of seeing this garish garment, leading them to flock together with their fashionably-responsible friends. It has become a challenge for students to move from class to class without running into someone who thinks that they are “rocking” this evil ensemble.

“I just don’t get it. It defeats the point of sandals,” sophomore Elle Moller said.

Not only does it prevent students from focusing on their academic pursuits, but the unsavory new trend has spread to the youngest members of the PBHS family: the freshmen. These naive, impressionable souls see seniors wearing these controversial outfits and immediately flock to stores to recreate that look, hoping to be considered “cool” by their peers.

“If they (the freshmen) see a senior or upperclassman wearing socks and sandals, they might think it’s fashionable, but it’s really not,” junior Mikaela Whitmer said.

To stop the further spread of this fashion disaster that threatens students, the school must destroy it at its source, yet administrators remain silent on this event. Students are outraged that they have done nothing to prevent the fashion felony.

“It’s a major oversight on the administration’s part,” junior Cole Booth said. “These people should be immediately suspended or, better yet, expelled.”

No matter what their age, grade, gender, or fashion style, everyone can agree that socks-and-sandals are revolting and have no place in this school.

Bold entertainment: ‘Bold nd Type’ deserves 2 season

ABC’s The Good Doctor aired on Sept. 25, the pilot starting off with Dr. Shaun Murphy making his way from his quiet life in the country to the hustle and bustle of California to work at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

The show focuses on Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) who was diagnosed with autism and savant syndrome in his childhood.

His diagnosis makes it hard for people to take him seriously as a surgeon and to get a position at the hospital.

The show has many actors of color portraying high-ranking surgeons at the hospital. Dr. Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) plays the typical sexist and arrogant attending surgeon, but there’s a twist: He actually admits when he’s wrong unlike similar characters in across different forms of media.

Dr. Browne (Antonia Thomas) is a woman of color that fights against Melendez to be taken seriously and to have her rightful place on his team of surgeons.

Just in the first episode, the show is already tackling heavy topics like child abuse, discrimination in the workplace and just plain ignorance.

Murphy’s troubled childhood is told mainly through flashbacks triggered by certain events happening

around him, such as a soccer ball rolling up to his feet.

As for discrimination in the workplace, Murphy’s mentor, Dr. Glassman, fights against the board of directors and their discriminatory and ignorant views on how having autism interferes with Murphy’s ability to save lives. Watching these characters deal with their respective problems draws you in and evokes emotion, whether that feeling is hatred and annoyance or sympathy and pride.

The center of the show revolves around how Murphy tries to earn his place at the hospital, be respected by his peers and balance work and his health all at the same time. So far, he seems to have various coping mechanisms to keep his autism in check.

The caliber of acting in this show is impeccable, especially Highmore. Highmore seems to understand how to properly portray and represent a disabled actor without offending people in that community. After watching the first episode, I think that this show could go for multiple seasons without any problems and I highly recommend this show. to anyone who enjoys drama and being drawn in.

The Bold Type officially premiered July 11 on Freeform, opening with three strong women arriving to their workplace, Scarlett magazine, the show’s take on Cosmopolitan magazine.

The show follows Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy), Jane Sloane (Katie Stevens) and Kat Edison (Aisha Dee), who are led by the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin).

The show features several characters that are members of the LGBTQ community and people of color. Carlyle fights the trope of being a rude, high-strung female boss and instead is compassionate toward her employees and supports them in all their endeavors, whether they succeed or not.

Edison, the main character, is a woman of color who questions her sexuality after meeting Adena El Amin (Nikohl Boosheri), an openly lesbian Muslim.

Besides intricate characters, the show explores the connection between sexuality and identity, positive and healthy intimate adult relationships, jobs and money issues, Islamophobia, intersectional feminism, rape and

misogyny.

The show tackles these heavy topics with a grace that is simulaneously hilarious and tear-jerking.

The forward thinking of this show is a breath of fresh air in the tumultuous environment we are in.

Various themes aside, the most important thing about the show is Kat, Jane, and Sutton’s friendship.

Their friendship is unconditionally supporting, no matter what arguments they get themselves into.

The friendship they have is an ideal example for any relationship.

The show tackles heavy topics with a grace that is both hilarious and tear-jerking.

After watching the whole season of The Bold Type and experiencing the beauty that the show is, whether it be the representation of all groups of people or themes that are relatable, I highly recommend this show to everyone and am glad it earned a second and third season.

Stone steps up to coach hoops

Having had experience coaching middle school, travel teams and junior varsity basketball, security guard, Jamesey Stone has been named the boys varsity basketball coach for the upcoming season.

“What brought me closer to basketball was during my brother’s freshman year in college and he died,” Stone said. “I gave up everything and I found basketball.

It stirred up a fire in me to get back and think of what my brother would’ve liked me to do. So I put education first and sports second.”

This being Stone’s first year coaching varsity, he must become much more of a leader to his boys.

“The biggest difference between

coaching varsity and junior varsity is the responsibility and being organized,” athletic director Jason Frey said. “If he exemplifies what he wants the kids to have, he will have to be the example of it. Alex Jenkins was the head, but now (Stone is) in charge of it, so he has to be the example of what he wants the kids to become.”

Stone’s experience with the game and outgoing personality gives Frey and Jenkins confidence.”He has a passion for the game and being a former player, he has experience,” Jenkins said. “He was a winner, so he’ll teach the kids how to win. His players trust him, and I’m always here for him.”

Last season the majority of the

boys were coached by Stone when they were in the junior varsity team, but some have stepped up to having a spot on the varsity team.

Stone has formulated specific goals for the team and ways to achieve them.

“Players feed off their coach, and with a winning mindset I can motivate them,” Stone said. “I have goals I want to reach as a coach, and I have goals I want them to reach as for a team. I’m going to use the negatives that they had last year and turn it into positives.”

Leading the team to victory and training them to become better players is always the main job for a coach, but Stone has something else that he tries to teach to the players.

“You have to have patience and be willing to accept failures that are bound to happen,” Stone said. “You have to own up to your own mistakes. Everything’s not a handout, you have to work for it.”

Former junior varsity players Cedric Camper and Durjaya Neysmith have high hopes for Stone as the season starts.

“He connects with the players and he’s always on top of us on grades and behavior,”Camper said. “I’m pretty excited. He was my coach last year; he was pretty good.”.

“He’s strategical,” Neysmith said, who was trained by Stone on a travel team. “He knows his game plan and we trust him as a coach.”

Freshman Kassis aims for flag

Freshmen are confronted immediately with immense academic pressures and a competitive environment. Golfer James Kassis has added the pressure of a competitive sport to his early high school experience.

Kassis fell in love with the sport after watching the Masters and President’s Cup last summer. From then on, he began striving to do his best in the sport and reveling in the feeling when it all pays off.

“When you hit the ball and it goes far, and it’s straight, and then you hit another ball and it’s straight and then you get it in the hole...mentally I say ‘yeah!’,” Kassis said.

Kassis is able to manage his schedules for both his academic and sports duties by dedicating any free time (not occupied by practice or class) to finishing his work.

“I get all my homework done on Fridays,” Kassis said. For homework during the school week, “I get it done in my study hall and in my research class.”

Kassis has high hopes for his future with golf, wanting to compete in elite competitions where he’d go head to head with the best in the county. He is determined to achieve his goal through blood, sweat and tears. His low nine-hole score this season is 46.

“Hopefully I can make it to the BCAA (Broward County Athletics Association) tournament for Broward County,” Kassis said.

Until then, Kassis is continuing to practice hard and be inspired by his fellow teammates to do his best.

“I look up to them and try to be good just like them,” Kassis said.

“Someday I’d like to be just like them.”

“This fall, I started my first dual-enrollment algebra class at Broward College.

It was different because instead of being exposed to peers my age, I was exposed to different age groups that ranged from 17 to almost 40 years old.”
