New ID policy strict, debated

Students are required to have their student IDs visible at all times on campus as of April 2 to ensure safety for students.

The new policy was announced March 22 during second period.

It states that if a student is seen not wearing their ID after returning from spring break, they’ll be given a two hour detention and a five dollar obligation.

This new policy came a surprise and flawed to many students.

“I like the policy, but I don’t think that we should get punished that harshly if we forget to wear (our IDs) simply because people whose job it is to stop people from coming in aren’t doing their jobs correctly,” sophomore Angelina Conforti said.

This is a common thought among students, who are typically appreciative of the effort to provide a safer school, but believe that the punishments are unreasonable.

be fined because we’re still adjusting to it,” sophomore Alexis Torres said.

While some students think the punishments are excessive, many teachers think they’re necessary

are “practical” and “logical” and hopes that because of these changes, students’ behavior in situations like this will change as well.

“I would like to believe that the students’ behavior will change based on what has occurred (at Douglas),” Donnelly said.

“They’re not serious, and everything is a joke to them.”

Gary Clayton, one of the many math teachers, likes the new procedures because it “allows the students and staff to move in

a timely fashion.” Clayton also mentioned that the new procedures will result in positive effects.

“Students and staff are aware of the protocol by the administrators when they come over the PA system,” Clayton said.

Richard Nagy, a history teacher, says the new procedures are positive because students are moving at a good pace. He also believes that there is only room for improvement with these new procedures.

Melillo believes that the enforcement of this policy will make students more aware of who does and does not belong. People who are seen not wearing theirs will stick out among the crowds of students who have theirs on display.

“It’ll make even the students be aware of ‘oh, he doesn’t have an ID, does he go here? Have I seen him before?’” Melillo said.

As well as making the school a safer place, Coach Stone thinks that enforcing this policy will make students more responsible and prepare them for life after school.

“In your workplace, as you get older, you’re gonna have to wear an ID to identify yourself,” Coach Stone said. “It’s a responsibility.”

New firedrill procedures leave teachers with burning beliefs

A recent change in fire drill procedures has resulted in a practice fire drill occurring on Mar. 21 during eighth block, requiring students to bring their belongings with them and put their cellphones away. Additionally, with these new procedures came some positive input from a few of the teachers.

“The students are not moving at a snail pace watching videos on their phones,” Nagy said. “I think these procedures will improve more as we rehearse further down the road.”

A majority of this school’s teachers do not want to be armed, according to a survey after Gov. Scott signed a new gun law, in response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, allowing some teachers to be armed if permitted by the local sheriff and school board. On March 19, 10 days after the bill was signed, 48 of the 54 teachers at the school were surveyed.

Forty-one teachers said that they would not want to be armed.

English teacher Marjorie Avery, who has been teaching for 31 years, is fiercely against being armed in her classroom.

“I’d rather quit first,” Avery said.

History teacher Richard Nagy was also against being armed in spite of his experience..

“I’ve carried a gun and I have a concealed permit,” he said.

All seven teachers who said that they would want to be armed in the classroom asked to be anonymous.

One of them said that teachers who carry guns should receive proper training and not be identified to the public.

According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, 10 states currently do not prohibit teachers with concealed carry permits to bring their guns to school.

On March 14, Seaside High School (Calif.) teacher Dennis Alexander’s gun accidentally went off, hitting the ceiling, when he was teaching a lesson about gun safety for an Administration of Justice class.

Senior Carly Barnard is against the idea of teachers being armed.

“Students only know their (teachers’) personality in the school, so you don’t know what makes them tick, so anything could happen,” she said. “Kids could be more scared and not as open to learning if a teacher is GRAPHIC BY JAMIE BLACK armed.”

Juniors had the opportunity to take the SAT exam for free during school hours on March 7.

Although every student took the same exam, each prepared differently and handled the test in different ways.

“I studied my past PSAT results and did practice tests online to prepare,” junior Francesa Reyes said.

When asked about her plans after the exam, Reyes made it clear that she is not taking a break anytime soon.

“I am going to a free SAT review class at BC in April, and then I am going to take the exam again in May,” Reyes said.

Junior Madison Philips was also able to take the exam for the first time.

“I think I was somewhat prepared; I could have practiced on Khan Academy prior to the exam to help me with the material,” Philips said.

She believes that she was able to do better in the reading and writing sections compared to the math sections because her English teacher helped her prepare by supplying specific questions that were related to those on the actual SAT. Because of her preparations, she feels that her overall exam experience was positive.

“I wasn’t too stressed over the

SAT since it was my first one and I could take it more times to better my score. I did feel nervous from the little stress I had,” Philips said.

Junior Sergio Prieto was able to take the exam on March 7 and again on the Saturday right afterwards. He prepared for the test by using Khan Academy and took it even further by “searching up some additional resources online when Khan Academy wasn’t clear in their explanations.”

Prieto believes that the exam is helpful to a certain extent but should not be required.

“A standardized test can only measure so far, so having them required only serves to limit students,” Prieto said. “If the SAT wasn’t worshipped as much as it is, it would be a good indicator, but if it continues to be treated the way it is, some other kind of testing should be designed that isn’t as limiting as the SAT.”

The biggest argument used to be whether pizza was created by Italians, but it actually originated in the ancient times in the Middle East. History proves that the Greeks, Egyptians, Armenians, Babylonians and Israelites began by making flatbread in mud ovens and topping the bread with olive oil and spices, now known as focaccia.

It wasn’t until 1522, when tomatoes were brought into Europe from Peru, that the poor --and hungry -- people of Naples found themselves placing the thought-to-be-poisonous fruit on top of their yeast dough, the first modern pizza.

After having found the answer to that problem, all other doubts and questions about pizza had been put aside, and the world of

Pineapple tidbits add a touch of sweetness and savory in every bite. Pineapple as a whole is very healthy and is a source of vitamin C, manganese and dietary fiber.

Therefore, piling a couple of pineapple tidbits onto your pizza can make you feel a little less guilty about eating it.

Shockingly enough, according to a Huffington Post infographic, “The Top 10 Most Popular Pizza Toppings,” pineapple came in at ninth place, followed by spinach.

If we allow mushrooms, which are neither fruit nor vegetable but fungus, to go acceptably on top of pizza, why can’t pineapples have the same liberty?

It’s no coincidence that dogs are called “man’s best friend” while “being a cat

lady” is an insult.

Picture this, a dog’s average lifespan is about 10-13 years. One year for a dog equals seven years for you because dogs mature much faster. So a two-year-old dog is equal to a high school freshman.

Through the eyes of a dog, humans live for hundreds of years, and their owners are the center of their universe. A child will grow up with a little puppy and as soon as the child is a teenager, the dog will already start to develop grey fur and grow weak.

A recent study by Carroll University researchers in Wisconsin found that when completing an intelligence test, “cat people” scored higher than “dog people”.

Students: Relax from setbacks The words “stressed” and “tired” are almost an instant response when a student is asked how they are, yet we don’t find that to be all too concerning.

Often we hear adults saying that the lives of students are easy and that we students have nothing to be worried about, but that just isn’t the truth.

Eightythree percent of students, in a survey taken by the American Psychology Association, credit school for being a major factor for the stress they face, which isn’t surprising to most students.

The competitiveness of school has increased dramatically since our parents were in high school.

No offense, but how many of our parents would be able to get into

the colleges they went to with the current standards of those colleges?

Based off data taken from the University of Florida, for the 1997-98 school year, the average SAT score for those admitted ranged between a 560-670 in verbal (reading) and a 580-680 in math. In 2016 those averages increased to 580-680 in critical

reading and a 600690 in math.

Stress isn’t all about the test scores. A student’s GPA has a major impact on their future and current stress level.

Using the 1997-98 v. 2016 data again, 20 years ago the average admitted freshman at UF had a GPA ranging from a 3.5-4.1, while in 2016 the average was between 4.2 and 4.5.

Besides good scores and a high GPA, most colleges expect rigorous coursework and an encyclopedia length list of extracurricular activities to give acceptance to a student, and once a student is accepted, there is no financial guarantee. Most students who aren’t millionaires have to start applying for scholarship after scholarship to pay for the ridiculous

price of college.

The track to college is not an easy one and causes a lot of stress on students, but we can’t allow the stresses of college prep and the rest of our current education in high school to ruin our lives.

Although our lives seem to be centered around school now, life

is not all about which test you passed or what college didn’t accept you. Our lives will be so much more than that in such a short amount of time.

In 2018 alone we have seen so many tragedies, especially so close to home in South Florida.

With these tragedies, we can see that life is short, and as cheesy as it sounds, we need to live like it’s our last day.

That said, don’t go do something incredibly dangerous or regrettable, but do something that makes you feel happy rather than stressed.

It’s been over a month since the Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and media coverage of potential legislature or just general precautions to prevent another shooting from happening has slowed to a crawl.

In the weeks following the shooting, many Americans were fired up for change and ready to make history by pushing back against the lazy politicians and pushing forward for a change in legislation. But as more days passed, the more the fire extinguished. Newspapers stopped

covering it, politicians introduced completely unrelated bills and proposals, and schools across the country got tired of all the students walking out of classes for peaceful protests.

America is known for focusing on something for a few days and then throwing it to the side to focus on something else that catches its eye, much like a hyperactive child would. We, as students, have an obligation to make sure that America’s short attention span doesn’t turn to something else when we haven’t gotten justice for the 17 lives we lost in that shooting. We acknowledge and are grateful for the steps that have been taken towards the goal of justice for those families and our community. But that’s just it; they’re just steps. There’s much more that needs to be done and

politicians are stalling because they think that we’re placated by the baby steps they’ve taken towards completing our goal.

Legislation regarding guns and school safety should’ve been changed when Columbine happened in 1999, but it wasn’t. Legislation should’ve been changed when Sandy Hook happened in 2012, but it wasn’t. Why? Because the media, politicians and ordinary citizens allowed it to fade away after just a few moments in the spotlight.

Ways to keep the conversation going is to continue to plan marches to your local city hall, contacting your representatives, and joining other schools’ activism. Douglas survivors Emma Gonzalez, Sarah Chadwick, David Hogg and Cameron Kasky use their immense social media

following to plan, organize and advocate for the prevention of gun violence and for the safety of students around the country.

Thousands of people went to planned marches and walkouts nationwide in the past month because students like Gonzalez, Hogg, Kasky and Chadwick took action, standing up for what they believe is right. The march on Washington that took place on March 24, fittingly called March For Our Lives, grew from people marching to the nation’s capitol to people marching to their government buildings on every single continent.

We have to keep talking about it, we have to keep bringing it up, or else it’ll fade into the background and become another statistic. This time will be different, this time has to be different.

JROTC’s annual Military Ball, hosted at The Signature Grand Hotel on March 16, had a variety of amenities for its guests, including a buffet-style dinner, a guest speaker and a DJ. “It was really beautiful,” junior Allie Tomaini said. “Everything was really nicely put together.

Everyone just had a really nice time.”

Students began the night by greeting the receiving line, consisting of various members of the school staff and the Cadet Battalion Commander as well as the guest speaker, Chad Maxey,

a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy and former Army infantry officer.

“We line up all of the cadets and their guests and they go through the receiving line,” Lt. Col. Gregory Johnson, JROTC senior instructor, said. “That’s when everyone introduces themselves.”

Upon entering the hall, guests were met with a royal-like introduction, which was appropriate as the crowning of the king and queen of the dance took place later that night, as they walked along a red carpet under a display of swords.

“The best part of the night is always walking in,” Tomaini said.

“They have the sabers up, and … you get your picture taken.”

Among the dancing and feasting, the night also had a more solemn presentation.

“We remembered the 17 that were taken way too early from Stoneman Douglas,” Johnson said. “We had a portion of the video that memorialized them.

Organizers of the event say that

this year’s event was the most successful one so far.

“I think this was the top one that we’ve ever had,” Johnson said. “It ran very smoothly.”

‘Every Day’ a waste of time and resources

“Every Day” was, from beginning to end, messy and unorganized. The movie, which was adapted from David Levithan’s New York Times bestseller of the same name, dove straight into its poorly put-together plot with little explanation of what was happening. Had I not read the book before seeing the movie, I would have been lost throughout the film.

The film revolves around a teenager named A (played by various talent throughout the film) who switches bodies every day. The movie begins with A waking up in the body of Justin (Justice Smith) and subsequently becoming enamored with Justin’s girlfriend, Rhiannon (Angourie Rice). The movie is the story of Rhiannon and A’s attempt at a relationship, despite A’s ever-changing body and location.

At least 20 poorly timed references to the book were shoehorned into the first 10 minutes

of the film, and that’s about where the resemblance fades.

While the book successfully unpacked this loaded plot, the movie failed miserably. Because there was no real reasoning for A’s changing, the film played out awfully, coming across as a cheaply made montage of different scenes that didn’t fit well together and made no sense whatsoever, either separately or as a whole movie.

This montage came to a badly written crescendo about halfway through, with what seemed to be a conclusion, but was ultimately not. This crescendo, which consisted of every scene that had so far taken place flashing across the screen at a slightly faster speed while Rhiannon gave a completely monotone monologue that made no sense with or without context about how she’d fallen in love with A, was more tacky than helpful in the continuation of the plot.

Of course, the film’s playing out like it was made by a team of middle schoolers partly had

to do with the acting displayed.

The various cast members who played A often seemed to have little to no chemistry with Rice, who portrayed Rhiannon as a needy girlfriend whose only thoughts revolved around her boyfriend, and later, A. The movie left me bored and wishing I’d walked out at the cre-

scendo, as the ending was unsatisfying and quickly wrapped up as many loose ends as possible in as little time as possible. Overall, the film’s production was poorly executed and it was a waste of both time and resources.

‘Love, Simon’ shows real teen struggles

“Love, Simon” officially hit theaters March 16, and it was the perfect blend of everything good about romcoms and the struggles of LGBTQ+ teens in today’s society.

The movie revolves around senior Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) as he falls in love with an anonymous boy from his school over email, while dealing with the typical anxieties of a high school student.

As the movie progresses, Simon is forced into coming out

to everyone in his life before he feels he’s ready, and while it’s something no one can be expected to be prepared for, he handles it fantastically, spinning it on its head and using it to his advantage to reach out to the anonymous boy and eventually meet him in person.

This movie is particularly spectacular because it’s an uncommon treasure to those who are able to see themselves in Simon. As of now, movies revolving around LGBTQ+ characters

aren’t that common, and movies with a happy ending are even less so. To see a gay teenage character on the big screen is new and exciting, and to see him have a happy ending is something I won’t soon forget.

While the movie did get serious at times as Simon worked through his unfortunate situation, the seriousness never lasted for too long. Each serious scene was followed by a handful of hilarious ones in a way that balanced out the film and made

it more enjoyable for its desired teen audience.

Overall, “Love, Simon” was a great adaptation of “Simon vs.

The Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli, the book on which it was based upon, and retold Albertalli’s story without disregarding it completely, like adaptations tend to do.

The boys volleyball team’s record dropped to 1-8 with a 3-1 home loss against Deerfield Beach on April 4.

Although the season may be coming to a close with only four games left, the team still “works hard every practice,” according to senior captain Andrew Frasco.

“We’ve worked on passing the ball to the setter, and the setters have been working with the hitters to perfect their spike,” Frasco said.

The players are especially grateful to their coach, Luis Pico.

“He always knows how to tell you how to get better when you’re playing, and he knows exactly what to work on for us to improve,” junior Matthew Narkier said.

As upperclassmen who have been playing on the team for a few years, Narkier and Frasco frequently offer advice to their fellow team members.

“I help improve their game by teaching them new things,” Frasco said.

The team’s final home game was April 9 against Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

“Everyone in the stands… Just all stormed the field. I was surprised we didn’t get an excessive celebration-type penalty.”

Hugentugler’s play also evoked excited responses from his coaches and from other players (some of whom were from the other team).

“My coaches were jumping up and down while hugging me,”Hugentugler said. “My teammates charged me and even the players on Glades were congratulating me,” Hugentugler said.

After his jaw-dropping performance against the Jaguars, Hugentugler hopes to continue scoring, aiming for three goals in the game against Taravella on April 11.

The boys and girls tennis teams played their last matches of the season away against Marjory Stoneman Douglas on April 5. Both teams lost 5-2. Tennis districts will begin on April 16 at Brian Piccolo Park.

The boys water polo team has a recod of 12-8. The team’s next game is on April 11.

The baseball team has a record of 11-4. The next game is on April 11 at Coral Springs Charter.

The softball team has an overall record of 9-6 and plays their next game on April 12 at West Broward.

Flag football tackles 2018 season

The flag football team beat Northeast High School 20-0 on April 3, its fourth win of the season.

“It feels pretty good because this year we did better than other years,” said senior Taylor Curry.

The team’s record of 4-5 at press time is an improvement from last season’s 3-8.

Curry credited new players.

“There are a lot of sophomores on the team this year,” Curry said.

Girls lacrosse team on ‘attack’

Lacrosse is new territory for the school, so eyes are on the teams to see if all the fuss was worth it.

The girls lacrosse team won two of its first three games, and players are feeling pretty confident.

“I remember when everyone first showed up and we couldn’t even catch a ball, and now we’ve won two out of our three games, and we keep improving everyday,” sophomore Isabella Zapata said.

The sport was introduced earlier this year, no experience or equipment needed.

“I wanted to try something

new so I tried it and loved it. I’m very glad I went through with it,” sophomore Luanna De Melo said.

Players believe they’ve found their groove after some clashes learning the new sport.

“There are times where there needs to be more teamwork, but most of the time we work pretty good together,” Zapata said.

As for their hopes for the rest of the season, they hope to continue on the streak they’re on now.

“I hope we win as many games as possible and improve our skills by the end of the season so we can have an even better season next year,” De Melo said.
