Pompano disses pipeline

The news of an oil pipeline passing through the Mississippi River has rocked the nation, along with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the teachers and students here.

The oil pipeline named the North Dakota Access Pipeline, has already begun construction, but work was halted because of protests by the indigenous tribe living

The pipeline is set to go through a water source that the tribe uses, potentially harming the water if a spill occurs. Another concern that has been raised is that the pipeline is said to be going through burial grounds.

The tribe chairman told the Chicago Tribune, “In one day, our sacred land has been turned into hollow ground.”

The idea of rich white people taking and ruining the land of those who have held it for hundreds of years is history repeating itself, but the major environmental effects it could have this time around is frightening.

Mrs. Dupre, environmental science teacher and adviser for the Environmental Club, weighed in on the subject saying, “(the pipeline) could create damage, although leaks from pipelines are not that often. But most of all, it has to do with the respect of their (tribal) land and their right to their land.”

Mrs. Dupre said local projects can damage the Florida environment.

“Tankers bring oil here so there is always that potential of a spill,” Mrs. Dupre said. “We have two nuclear power plants by us, we could have a nuclear accident.”

opinions on the pipeline and other harmful environmental factors seem like the right thing if you are someone who simply cares for the environment, but at the same time there is a whole other side to the argument that sees the economic profit.

In a press release, Energy Transfer, the company behind the pipeline, claimed a study showed “that the construction of the pipeline will have significant economic impact on the four states along the pipeline route, which include North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois, terminating at the oil terminal hub near Patoka, Illinois.

The four-state region will experience an increase of $1.9 billion in income, nearly $5 billion in production and sales, and $156 million in state and local taxes.”

Environmentalists argue that the promise of jobs and income for the states does sound nice on the economic side of things, but the environment isn’t something that should be disregarded in order to profit.

Mrs. Dupre pointed out how oil and other forms of energy do sometimes conflict with the environment.

“We do have a need of energy, but we have to look at the environmental impact that it will have and also the respect for the Native Americans,” Mrs. Dupre said.

Two students earn commended title

Seniors Brianna Donnelly and Nassim Davila have been named commended students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, based on their performance on last year’s Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT).

“I’m really proud that I was able to do well enough to be a commended student,” Donnelly said.

“While I may not be a National Merit Semifinalist, I did my best and I’m glad I got something to show for it.”

Davila seems to be just as honored as Donnelly.

“It is an honor. Literally,” Davila said.

The PSAT, given this year on Oct. 19, partners with the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) to reward students who earn high scores on the test with scholarships and recognition.

The results were released by the NMSC this September. The 50,000 test takers with the highest scores

were all recognized for this achievement on some level.

Approximately two-thirds of the 50,000 test takers received letters of commendation, recognizing their “outstanding academic promise,” according to NMSC. The remaining one-third are deemed semifinalists, and can qualify for the role of finalist if they have high academic standing and high SAT scores. About 15,000 test takers are awarded the title of National Merit Semifinalist and presented certificates.

Of the 15,000 semifinalists, scholarship winners are chosen, and approximately 7,500 Finalists receive a Merit Scholarship award. There are three types of awards: a $2,500 scholarship, a corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship award and a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award.

For the 2017 National Merit Scholarship, which is awarded to students in the Class of 2017, students took the PSAT/NMSQT in 2015.

The qualifying score in Florida

for this award is a 217, higher than the average qualifying score for the United States: 216.25. This score is not the same thing as the PSAT score. It is determined by the critical reading, writing and math subscores all added together and multiplied by two. Commended students had to score 209 or higher.

Last year, the PSAT changed its format because the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) did so. The test was revised so that the critical reading and writing section scores were combined into one score, while the math score included both a calculator section and a no calculator section.

Because of the combined “evidence-based reading and writing” section score, last year’s PSAT had a maximum score of 1520, with 760 being the maximum score in each category.

Another change is that incorrect answers did not result in a penalty, making the test more similar to the American College Test (ACT).

Underclassmen ready for PSAT

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) will be administered on Oct. 19.

According to testing coordinator Mr. Mumtaz, all freshmen and sophomores and 90 percent of juniors will be taking the test.

“We hope that some of them will get the National Merit Scholarship,” Mr. Mumtaz said.

Last year’s changes are now familiar to some students, so scores are expected to rise.

“I didn’t really study for it last year and I did decent,” junior Maileen Ruiz said. “But I’d obviously like to score higher.”

Juniors are looking forward to practicing a national college-readiness exam.

“I feel as if (the PSAT) can help me to succeed in my attempt at the SAT, and it can, in the long run, help me get into a better college,” junior Garrett Moore said.

Stand up for Kaepernick’s kneel-down By

Colin Kaepernick is a quarterback for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. On Aug. 26, he began his journey into controversy by refusing to stand during the U.S national anthem before a game.

His actions received an immediate response from the general public. Some claimed he even disrespected our nation.

“I don’t think it’s right,” sophomore Corey Little, a JV football player, said.

“If anything, he should do something else instead of kneeling down during the national anthem ... and I found that disrespectful.”

Other NFL players supported his actions and even followed his example by protesting themselves.

Jeremy Lane, a Seattle Seahawk, also engaged in this protest and said that he would continue to do so until justice was served.

Were Kaepernick’s actions right? YES! What justice is Lane talking about? It is the justice that the black community has been longing for.

The recent killings of black people, especially black men, has made the community uneasy.

“As a black man in America, I feel that what Colin is doing is for a good cause and has a supportive and positive message behind it,” junior Tedrick Wilson, a JROTC company commander, said. “I also think people don’t understand what the real issue is, and (they are) also solely focusing on his position instead of the fact that he’s using his platform to bring awareness to certain issues.”

Oversensitivity to bringing up racial issues is also one of the main reasons he is receiving so much backlash.

Kaepernick didn’t hesitate to protest about the wrongdoings inflicted upon black people. Some Americans, in the land of so-called freedom, have been pushing us to censor our thoughts.

He has the right to protest, and that is not illegal.

Among all of the chaos, the NFL made an official statement that “players were encouraged but not

required to stand during the national anthem.”

“Legally we can’t punish them, nor would I punish them for that,” Mr. Nagy, varsity football coach, said. “They have a right to protest.”

Mr. Nagy recalled the protest of two sprinters at the 1968 Olympics, who raised gloved fists on the medal stand as the national anthem played to protest racism.

“I do prefer the power fist instead (of kneeling during the anthem), but I’m not angry at (Kaepernick) and I won’t walk around calling him unpatriotic,” Mr. Nagy said.

We seem to forget that patriotism is the love for one’s country or nation.

Kaepernick was only using his voice for the benefit of his people, and if you don’t agree with that, then try walking around every day of your life fearing that you might not make it home.

Football players sacrifice mental health for games By

The risk of concussion in sports, especially football, has become an issue of concern for students, parents and coaches alike.

For football fans like me, it is difficult to determine whether the sport is worth playing when the players’ health is at risk.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

esimates that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million concussions occur in sports and recreational activities throughout the country each year.

However, concussions are not the only head injuries that can affect a player’s health.

According to Dr. Robert Stern, a professor of neurology and leader in the head injury field at Boston University, “In Pop Warner, a player can get 600-700 subconcussive hits per season. These subconcussive hits are usually not detected, so they’re not being treated. If you test the hits, they’re over 15 g in force. In high school, they are

getting 800-1000 hits per season.

College players get over 1500 of those hits in each season.”

As these hits are extremely dangerous in excess, and can even lead to death, football is a high-risk sport.

The movie “Concussion” was about the founding of the degenerative disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). This disease can cause a person to hurt others or even himself.

Because of the negative effects of CTE, Stern said that “there should not be any youth tackle football until at least high school.”

I agree with Stern’s reasoning.

The more subconcussive hits and concussions that a person gets, the higher the risk is for the player to get CTE. Even if the player is five years old, these hits can affect him far into his future.

The risk of concussions and permanent brain damage due to sports like football is too high for me to feel comfortable with someone that I know and love playing such sports.

So, it’s hard for me to say that it is okay for anyone to play football, though I love watching the game.

Be afraid, be very afraid

This year’s election scares the heck out of us This election year is unprecedented in modern U.S. political history. The two viable candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, are the least liked in history.

It might be after Halloween, but this year’s Election Day is going to be much scarier.

A poll conducted by the Tornado Times revealed that the vast majority of students think either of the probable outcomes to be somewhat or extremely scary.

A Trump presidency would scare 73 percent of those surveyed, while 52 percent find the prospect of a Clinton presidency scary. Although both candidates are undoubtedly flawed, we cannot pretend that they are in any way equal.

Conservative news outlets have painted Clinton in a harsh light because of her involvement, or lack thereof, with the attack on U.S. diplomatic compounds in Benghazi, Libya. They accused Secretary Clinton of neglecting the pleas for help from an ambassador concerning security measures, which ultimately led to the death of four American citizens.

As scary as the prospect of a Hillary Clinton administration is, a Trump administration unnerves us more.

Seven million dollars and another seven congressional inquiries later, Clinton was cleared of any wrongdoing. But the scandal and biased coverage has left the secretary with a damaged reputation.

This, coupled with a private email server used during her tenure as secretary of state, has ignited widespread feelings of distrust and deceit among many Americans. Without an inkling of doubt, her use of a private email server was reckless. While the FBI director, James Comey, has recommended no charges to the Department of Justice, voters and/or students find this to be a scary lapse in judgement.

This scandal is perceived as scary because any of our nation’s enemies could have hacked her email, for it isn’t as protected as a government email server. While the FBI has said that there is no evidence of any hacking, the best hackers rarely leave any footprints.

As scary as the prospect of

a Hillary Clinton administration is, a Trump administration unnerves us more.

In Trump’s very first campaign speech, he described Mexican immigrants as “criminals” and “rapists.”

He has since proposed to build a massive, expensive wall that Mexico is going to pay for. The president of Mexico has said, in no uncertain terms, that it will not pay for said wall.

Since then, he has gone back and forth with the idea of banning Muslims altogether. The idea is not only unconstitutional, but also Islamophobic and based on an irrational mindset that all Muslims are extremists.

More recently, a video has come to light regarding Trump’s attitude toward women. Trump, “because he is a star,” can grab whosever genitalia he pleases.

This may not come as a surprise to some voters, for this type of behavior is completely in character of “the Donald.”

A constant claim that he is an “incredible” business-

man is nearly discredited by his 1995 tax returns, reported by the New York Times.

His tax returns declared a loss of nearly $1 billion from his Atlantic City casinos.

His failure to release his tax returns, a ritual in which every presidential candidate since Nixon has partaken, has been basked in lies and deceptions. He has constantly claimed that because he is under audit by the IRS, so he cannot release his tax returns.

This claim has been debunked by dozens of major media outlets, the IRS and Warren Buffett, who was invoked by Trump as another billionaire who paid no federal income tax during his second debate with Clinton. (Buffet’s promptly released his tax returns, disproving Trump’s claim.)

Trump’s lack of respect for the truth, constant berating of minorities, women and immigrants, and his child-like temperament render him unfit to serve as our country’s president.

Scary roaches sprawling out of learning commons

Among the changes to the media center are some unexpected critters: roaches.

A sophomore who chose to remain anonymous for fear of “getting in trouble” claimed that he has seen roaches in the media center, and in one instance, posted on Snapchat.

“It’s disgusting,” the sophomore said. “We go to Pompano Beach High, and this is what we find. The learning environment should be kept clean, rather than having an infestation of roaches everywhere.”

Mr. Putnam, who monitors the media center before and after school, believes that it shouldn’t be taken seriously or as personal. After all, they are only roaches.

“There’s roaches all over the school, not just only in the media center,” Mr. Putnam said. “It’s nothing new.”

Ms. Estrella, media center aide, admits roaches are atrocious, but she hasn’t seen many in the media center.

“I guess we have to be more vigilant, but I haven’t seen anything major,” Ms. Estrella said.

Old media center becomes new ‘learning commons’

In the new learning commons more computers and laptops are available, as well as outlets to charge them, as well as cellphones and other devices. The center is open to all students before school, during lunches and after school for tutoring.

“Our hope is that students will enjoy the new area and use the resources provided for them,” Principal Thomas said.

Many of the bookshelves have been replaced with a plethora of computers and a lounge, making the space more modern, clean and open.

“I love it because it’s lighter, spacious, and a place where students are more eager to come,” media aide Ms. Estrella said.

Sophomore Reynaldo Williams agreed that, with the new renovations, the area is more welcoming and comforting, allowing him to complete his homework and chat with friends.

“I think it’s useful and comfortable being in there,” Williams said.

“The chairs and tables are more comfortable and the computers and charging areas make it easier for students.”

Although students are excited about the learning commons, some feel that it isn’t as open to the students as it used to be because they

must now bring a pass whenever they go during class.

“Whenever you want to use the library, they either ask you to have a pass or it’s either closed because other classes are using it during lunches so students can’t go in,” senior Shalice Edwards said.

According to administration, the use of passes is for safety purposes and for teachers and security guards to know where students are heading and where to locate them in case of an emergency.

Mr. Thomas said a new food area will be added to the learning commons. It will include Dunkin Donuts products, but it won’t be like a resturant. The plan is to have a one touch, grab-and-go system, where students will quickly buy their snack in an efficient manner.

“We already created the space, but there’s a lot that goes into getting the food,” Mr. Thomas said. “I see this in place by next semester

Students such as senior Tristan Wong and junior Robert Suggs are excited about the new dining area and feel this will motivate and help the students arrive to school on time.

According to Ms. Narus, assistant principal overseeing student activities, members need to understand that the school doesn’t pay for any clubs or extracurricular activities.

The school allows students to have clubs and sports as a privilege, but students have to work hard to keep the club going because the school doesn’t fund them.

“Students didn’t pay dues,” Ms. Narus said. “Color guard is an extracurricular and it needs to be paid and the school isn’t required to pay it. The school doesn’t fund any club. The Athletic Booster (Club) funds the sports, and they pay for sports equipment, buses and games.”

According to music director Ms. Odio, for the previous three years a parent, Bill Dowd, had funded the club with a minimum of $25,000, which lowered the dues amount for students and it provided the club with its equipment and instructors.

When Dowd’s daughter graduated, students had to start paying their full amount of dues and needed to begin new fundraising strategies.

Ms. Odio said students did not adjust to the new financial reality.

“All these people (students and parents) who didn’t have to pay their dues (before), had to pay (now) and (they) didn’t want to

pay,” Odio said.

With many members’ dues unpaid, the group needed to have fundraisers to raise money. The members had the whole year to raise money, Odio said, but organized only one car wash.

In addition to financial issues, Britto also claims the advisors’ and instructors’ lacked sufficient interest to continue the group.

“One of the instructors was not only helping us students practice but he was also involved in four other schools, which is why he wasn’t able to attend some practices,” Britto said. “Ms. Odio was always concentrated about band so we were never really the spotlight of her attention and every year the instructors just lost more interest in the club.”

Britto added, “I don’t even ever recall seeing Mr. Thomas at any of the competitions.”

Britto went as far as deciding to quit the color guard club so that she would be able to take part in another school’s team, but since two students chose to remain, she wasn’t allowed to perform for another school.

Senior Tyler Barrett, a captain along with Britto, said that it was Ms. Odio’s fault that interest fell.

“Ms. Odio without a doubt was to blame for the downfall of guard,” Barrett said. “She showed no encouragement for us, she got mad every time we tried to talk to her, and she even told us that band was more important to her than guard.”

According to Ms. Odio, when she expressed to color guard that her main focus was on band, the words came out wrong causing misunderstandings amongst the club members.

iPhone 7: not jacked up

Apple’s iPhone 7, which was released in early September and launched in mid-September, is the newest and most improved iPhone, with a significantly longer battery life, a new color, faster processors and better water resistance.

One eminent feature of the iPhone 7 is the water

resistance, which was implemented through taking away the headphone jack and the “real” home button. The new home button is pressure sensitive and meant to mimic the previous home button.

Apple designed wireless, Bluetooth headphones and a Lightning adapter in place of the jack. Stereo speakers were installed at the top

and bottom of the phone.

“It’s not right,” sophomore Mikella Coradeghini said. “Apple should have left the jack the way it was, and instead focused on improving other things, like a three-way Facetime feature; it’s what people actually want.”

A new color, jet black, was added to the spectrum of optional colors for the iPhone 7. Jet black has a glossy finish, while the black, silver, gold and rose gold have a shinier mattelike texture. The screen sizes of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus remain the same as the previous iP-

hone 6s and 6s Plus, respectively. Another preeminent and new feature is the dual camera, added to the iPhone 7 Plus. In addition to the first 28mm wide-angle lens, the iPhone 7 Plus has a second 56mm lens, which was added for improved optical zoom.

Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have a 50 percent brighter LED flash, compared to previous iPhone models, plus a renovated 7-megapixel Facetime camera in HD with a new sensor and stabilization technology for a better front-camera.

A faster processor has been added to the new iPhone. Both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus use the same processor, the A10 Fusion Chip. The previous chip in the 6 and 6s phones was an A9 Chip. LTE, a form of wireless communication, is three-times faster than the iPhone 6.

The price went up $100 from the 6s to the 7, and then $120 from the 6s Plus, to the 7 Plus. The iPhone 6s is $549 and the price for the iPhone 7 is $649. The iPhone 6s Plus is $649 and the price of the iPhone 7 Plus is $769.

Book Club opens new chapter

The Book Club provides a new forum for members to read books and discuss them during meetings.

“Reading is a very important skill,” founding president Sabrina Conza said. “We will be reading at least one book every two months.

I want to fundraise to not have to pay for the books.”

Along with Conza, the other

officers are Vice President Brianna Donnelly, Secretary Zoe Rosser, Treasurers Daniela Schonis and Juan Castillo, Historian Victor Lopez, Parliamentarian Simon Ho and ICC Representative Opeoluwa Morakinyo.

This month, they will be reading “Unwind,” a science fiction novel.

The next Book Club meeting will be Oct. 20 in Ms. Wilson’s room, 207. New members are welcome.

Golf teams swing into regionals

an amazingly successful season next year.”

Sophomore Tom Christensen led the boys with a 78, and senior Kylee Mineo led the girls with a 92.

“I’ve played all four years of high school,” senior Olivia Saunders said. “Golf is a lot of fun and there isn’t too much pressure.

A lot of us have improved and I’m confident we’ll do well as we continue throughout the season.”

Football intercepted by Matthew

Because of Hurricane Matthew the homecoming game set for Oct. 7 was pushed back to Oct. 10.

“I don’t like it because it got pushed back to Monday so senior night and homecoming game are on the same night,” linebacker Brian Campbell said.

Despite the hurricane, the football team defeated Pembroke Pines Charter 32-6.

Spikers prepare for districts

The girls volleyball team has a winning record of 13-9.

“The girls work as hard as they can and do the best with what they have,” Head Coach Pico said.

Right hitter Katie Maleta, senior, said “everyone is working hard and has a positive attitude.”

The team is hosting the district tournament on Oct. 18 and 20.

Cross country boys speed toward finish

This year’s group of cross country runners are far faster than last year’s, according to senior D’andre Nicholson. The fourth year runner thinks it’s about time they make regionals. As this might be Nicholson’s final high school race, he’s “going off.”

country team, is optimistic about qualifying for this year’s regional meet.

“If I shave a minute off my time and if (some members) get it together, we have a good chance,” Nicholson said.

Senior Race Wilhoite maintains a significant lead over two Cardinal Gibbons swimmers This would be the first time any- in the boys 200-meter individual medley. Wilhoite finished third, following two other Pompano swimmers. one has qualified for the regional cross country meet in several years.

Donnelly coaches son

The junior varsity (JV) football team has a new assistant coach this year, Coach Donnelly.

This summer, when bringing his son to summer conditioning, Donnelly heard that the coach could always use help with the team.

Because of his interest in spending quality time with his son in what he called their “common passion,” Donnelly decided to volunteer during summer conditioning.

“I currently help the team in all aspects,” Coach Donnelly said.

“Pretty much wherever head coach Shipley needs me.”

Coach Donnelly’s son Nick is a freshman running back for the JV football team, so the father focuses on that position.

“I’d rather have (my dad) as a coach than anyone else,” Nick Donnelly said.

Since he became an assistant coach, Coach Donnelly has found that he really enjoys it.

“I love coaching kids and helping become the best they can be at their positions,” Coach Donnelly said. “It’s always gratifying to see kids to learn and grow in the sport.”

Another aspect that Coach Donnelly loves is seeing players come into their own.

“The best part is watching the kids who have never played before learn and become productive assets to the team,” Coach Donnelly said.

Coach Shipley has three assistant coaches other than Coach Donnelly: Coach Little, Coach Bill and Coach Bruce.

The team finished the season with a record of 2-3, as the Sept. 28 game was never completed.
