Media center to receive modern makeover

The media center has been undergoing some fairly drastic changes, including cleaning out many books and getting rid of the majority of the bookshelves against the north wall, in preparation for major renovations during the summer.

“The idea is to make the media center like a Barnes and Noble,” Principal Thomas said.

The library will be converted into a more interactive, modern and mobile space to encourage students to read and visit the media center more often.

“I am just so excited for students

to be able to utilize the space to the fullest and how cool it is going to look,” Ms. Estrella, the media center aide, said.

Students also seem to like the new design.

“The plans are great,” senior Cross Carlisle, media center teacher’s assistant, said. “I think it will bring more people into the media center and add a sense of togetherness.”

The new plans include several comfortable, mobile and flexible areas for students to read and enjoy the media center.

“The areas will be very defined for their different purposes,” Ms.

Estrella said.

The new space will also include high-top tables, couches and other rectangular tables that can be converted to make a testing area. There is even the possibility of adding an area for a coffee stand for students and faculty.

“The fact that there may be food stations is my favorite aspect,” Carlisle said.

The library will still have a section dedicated to books that students can check out; however, the reference and nonfiction sections were removed, and the books in these sections were offered to students for free, because most stu-

dents now use the Internet to find information that would otherwise be located in those sections.

The plan will require many cosmetic, as well as structural renovations, including the installation of new carpet and changes to the electrical system so students can plug in their phones, tablets or other devices that they may use to study or read.

A committee at the banquet decided who the winners of the scholarships would be.

Trump was the only senior out of our school’s nominees that won a scholarship award.

Mr. Cledet believes she won because she is a “natural leader” that “you just want to follow” and because she is “very giving of her time” and “her talent.”

The purpose of the award is to “recognize seniors that have gone above and beyond,” according to

Mr. Cledet.

The scholarship money is funded by parents and students who buy graduation products, not including cap and gown orders, from Herff Jones. Because the prize money is funded by the previous year’s sales, the scholarship amount varies every year.

The other three nominees for the Outstanding Senior Leader were Remy Bassett-Audain, Genae Brown and Jean Marin.

“All of the students from Pompano Beach High School are very hard-working individuals who deserve not only recognition by coaches, teachers and advisors, but by their peers as well,” Trump said.

ICC requires clubs to help SGA

Apparently high school matters It’s nearly 10:00 a.m., and the 27 students in class can’t believe that, once again, they are being subjected to the cruel and unusual punishment that is calculus. As the teacher writes away on the board, phones start to magically appear in students’ hands, careful whispers start to escalate into normal conversational tones and notebooks start to close without a second care.

When the teacher halfheartedly tells the class to put away the phones and pay attention, the most natural response is to groan and complain later to friends about how there’s this teacher who wants to actually, like, teach in school.

But paying attention in class is too overrated for teenagers in high school.

Class is more of a study hall and school itself is just one big social event with a start time, bells, lunch and an end time. Besides, who will ever need to know that the derivative of x is one, or that the mitochondrion is the powerhouse of the cell once students leave the classroom?

In all reality, graduates do use information they learn in high school in their daily lives. For some, the material they learn in high school courses is what sets them on their college and career paths in the first place.

“I am currently studying finance at the University of Florida,” alumnus Austin Jenkins (’15) said. “Taking classes relating to economy senior year made me appreciate the way businesses work. I would like to make my money work for

me. I have had a lot of great teachers who have inspired me to achieve big things, and I appreciate that about Pompano.”

While it is an urban myth that high school classes were created to torture students and raise their stress levels to unhealthy highs, that’s not necessarily the case. Even though they’re still stressful and occasionally trivial, high school courses are designed to provide students with a foundation in an assortment of different subjects ranging from science to history.

Our school not only provides us with general classes, but also with a variety of AP classes in order to teach us how to think and learn as a college student would.

“At Pompano, I learned how to critically think and question what I hear, as well as to research that which I don’t know,” Michaela Garretson (’14) said.

“I learned to appreciate history and appreciate acquiring knowledge.”

It’s one thing to provide us with resources and information about what to think, but our school works to teach us how to think, as well. With the variety of both honors and AP classes to take, as well as the option of taking online or dual enrollment courses, students are exposed to different educational standards, and therefore, they must address different classes with different mindsets.

“Pompano Beach High School advertises itself as a college prep school, and that’s exactly what it did,” Justin Riley (’15) said. “If I had not gone to Pompano, my freshman year of college

would’ve been a lot rougher than what it was. I found that most of the classes I took at Pompano were harder than classes I take now.”

But education is only one aspect of high school.

Experiences also contribute to a student’s future after graduating.

During her junior year, Mia Gettenberg (’14) applied for a summer program called Girls State through BRACE adviser Ms. McFadden. “While I was there, I participated in a mock state government and acted as an attorney, arguing in the Florida Supreme Court,” Gettenberg said. “It was awesome, and it assured me that I really do want to pursue something in law or government.”

Both Riley and Jenkins said that their experience here taught them how to

handle real world situations and how to better manage their time. Jenkins also said that Pompano taught him that he “never wants to take another 8:00 a.m. class” in his life.

“Overall, the experience (at Pompano) has been incredibly beneficial for my success,” Jenkins said.

High school can teach students more about themselves, as well as about the world around them. There are always the tragic stories about friends drifting apart in high school, but that’s an experience that transforms itself into a memory and helps those students shape themselves into more mature people.

“High school has taught me how to meet new people and friends and start pursuing things I really want to learn and engage in for my future,” Gettenberg

said. “I like to think college has been a place of growth for me, and without the experiences I had in high school, I wouldn’t have had the confidence and the drive to have that growth in college.”

Based on an online poll of 142 students conducted from May 2 until May 5, 37.32% of the students at Pompano feel that what they learn and experience in Pompano won’t impact or help them in the future.

Even if we don’t see it now, high school is an important foundation that students build their successful, or not so successful, futures on. If we realize now that high school is teaching us so much more than math formulas and verb tenses, then we will finally start to realize that high school, especially ours, does put us on the road to success.

Letter to the Editor: Test Stress I want to discuss an issue that has been overlooked this year and not followed as promised to students. This issue is about the testing schedule for each class.

The promise was that classes would have tests only on a certain day of the week depending on the class.

I believe that the school should start enforcing the testing days’ schedule rule for each class more strictly because it creates less stress for students who have to take multiple tests in one day and also because it allows students to focus on one topic each day .

This would not be an issue if teachers assigned tests on varying days, but the majority of teachers believe that taking tests on Thursday or the following Monday is the best idea. Somehow they all plan their tests on those days, as if they talk to each other and discuss how to put a mountain of study work on their students and expect them to be prepared for all the tests with no problems whatsoever.

Stress is proven to affect your mood by making you anxious, restless, less motivated, angry and irritable.

The toll of stress is a problem on its own; now imagine having to take multiple tests with these symptoms. This will not only have obvious negative results on the test scores and on the individual experiencing the stress, but it will also lead to more stress because you are worrying about how you “bombed” that test or almost puked after question three.

Students who take multiple tests on a single day versus students who take multiple tests over a period of time score lower than those who have the time to study on one or two topics and focus on them rather than rush studying many topics.

To summarize, I believe that teachers should follow this testing schedule to allow students to better prepare themselves for tests and ensure that they understand the concept and avoid dealing with stress’s negative effects.

Dump Trump: Presidential candidate condones violence, racism

He has called all Mexicans rapists: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best.…

They’re bringing drugs.

They’re bringing crime.

They’re rapists.” He calls

black people thugs and all Muslims terrorists. He has been caught saying negative things about blacks, Asians, immigrants, Latinos, Muslims and even the disabled.

Trump is encouraging stereotypes. America is a melting pot of cultures, so the fact that he makes racist comments should be reason enough not to vote for him.

In 2015 Trump tweeted: “If Hillary Clinton cannot satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America.” He then deleted the tweet, but that doesn’t take away the fact that he said it. That comment is blatantly sexist and offensive.

Trump has also encour-

aged his supporters to be violent when people at one of his rallies tried to throw tomatoes at him, as he said “Seriously, okay, just knock the hell. I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees; I promise, I promise.”

He then retracted his statement by saying that he doesn’t condone violence.

He hasn’t shown it, though.

On many occasions where violence had broken out at his rallies, he just encourages this type of behavior.

In March, eight of his 20 rallies ended up with someone getting arrested for assault.

Since Trump is promoting violence and offensive behavior, he should not become president.

5 seniors on path to Dyla Knighthood P i n a rn d

Five seniors await the revelation of who will be awarded the prestigious scholarship and be dubbed a Silver Knight.

According to English teacher Ms. Avery, Silver Knights is a “scholarship program sponsored by the Miami Herald” that seeks to honor “seniors who excel both academically and in their service to school or community.”

The five seniors that were nominated as candidates this year are Lauren Thompson in the world languages category; Dylan Pinard, math; Sophia Oropeza, music and dance; Nicholas DiNapoli, science; and Alexandria Smith, vocational/ technical.

“I chose to enter Silver Knights because I wanted to have a chance to speak about the community and school involvements that JROTC has led me to be a part of, which has helped me become the person I

am today,” Smith said.

In order to be considered as a nominee, potential candidates must be a high school senior in either a public, private or parochial school in Miami-Dade or Broward County with a minimum 3.2 GPA, according to the Silver Knight Alumni Network’s website. There are 15 categories that students can be nominated in, but each school can only nominate one candidate per category.

“Students needed to have a major community service project,” Ms. Avery said. “Students were chosen on the basis of their academic achievement and more importantly on the strength of their service.”

Once chosen as the nominees for their categories, the five seniors completed a lengthy application process, which included a student profile, a six-page essay and a letter of recommendation from the serated with. After the submission of vice organization they are associtheir paperwork, the nominees had to go to the Signature Grand at an assigned date and time to be interviewed by a panel of three experts in their categories.

“It was nerve-wracking,” Thompson said.

The interview was the last step of the application process, and all the candidates can do now is sit and wait until a decision is made about who will win.

Each panel of judges will select one Silver Knight and three honorable mentions per category. Each Silver Knight will receive $2,000, a Silver Knight statuette and a round-trip ticket from American Airlines. Each honorable mention is awarded $500 and an engraved plaque.

Separate winners are selected from Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Candidates appreciated the lessons the application process has taught them and encouraged students next year to apply.

“I definitely would recommend seniors to apply next year because at other schools, this program is an honor to have, and it’s put on a pedestal to be even considered a Silver Knights Nominee Candidate,” Smith said. “Why not speak about what you have done? You may just inspire someone to find their place in helping the community.”

Thompson also encouraged seniors to apply next year, noting that this experience has managed to teach her “great interview skills.”

The award ceremony will be held on May 18 at the James L. Knight Center in Miami.

Seniors sign with schools

Every high school athlete works to be offered a chance to play at the college level, and five seniors received offers to continue their athletic careers.

Sport: Swimming School: Indian River State College Intended Major: Physical Education Signing Date: March 16 Starting her swimming career at age eight, Stewart signed to the state college in Ft. Pierce.

“I cried tears of joy; it felt amazing,” Stewart said.

She considers her biggest influence to be her older brother, who also competed in swimming. Her biggest swimming accomplishment was winning first place in the 100-meter freestyle in the BCAA Championship. If possible, Stewart said she would like to go pro.

Bobby Aseere Sport: Baseball School: South Florida State College Intended Major: Sports Managment Signing Date: April 6 After playing baseball for about 12 years, Assere signed to the Avon Park state college. To train, Aseere goes to the gym every day after practice and runs a mile on the weekends.

He credits his dad as his biggest influence, who has pushed him and went out to the field to practice with him ever since he was little.

His biggest accomplishment was participating in a home run derby this past spring break at Marlins Park and hitting three home runs.

Assere would like to go pro because “it has been a dream, and you make a lot of money from it.”

Feb. 3 Starting his football career as a sophomore, Young gives credit to his coaches, team and mom for his success.

Young plans on majoring in engineering at the Melbourne university. He said he chose FIT for its academics and because it was his only offer.

“Yeah, I would like to go pro, but it’s unrealistic,” he said.

Cori Smothers Sport: Volleyball School: Frostburg State University Intended Major: Nursing Signing Date: March 16 After playing volleyball for 12 years and currently training at Ocean Breeze Volleyball Club three to four times a week, Smothers received multiple offers, having qualified the past four years for Junior Olympic volleyball. She chose to spend the next four years at Frostburg State University in Maryland.

Frostburg offered Smothers 60 percent of college fees, and she plans on majoring in nursing.

As for a professional career, she said she doesn’t want to go pro and wants to “settle down and get established” after college.

Baseball slides into district win

The baseball team won the regional semifinal against Somerset on May 3, with a final score of 5-1. They defeated Somerset three times this season, including a 12-5 victory for the district championship.

“The other team was talking a lot of smack, but it was a good game,” senior, second baseman, Bobby Aseere said.

The baseball team had not won a district game in 47 years, according to Coach Giummule. The boys played in the regional final on May 10, where they lost to Monsignor Edward Pace High School.
