Chinese students visit school, learn U.S. culture

One principal, two teachers and 12 Chinese students came to Pompano Beach High School from Feb. 1-4 thanks to the Confucius Institute in China that promotes the exchange of cultures.

“Through this program, Mr. Thomas went to China and visited Chongqing Fudan High School,” Ms. Narus, assistant principal, said.

“He was able to make a partnership, and now they’re inviting our students to visit them too.”

The visitors hoped to take some of the U.S. culture they learned back to their school.

“Mixing cultures leads to better education,” Flora, the English teacher from China, said.

The group stayed at the school for five days, and their schedule included touring the campus, attending a club fair and going on an airboat ride. Throughout the week,

they visited classrooms to see what U.S. schools are like.

“The students prepared presentations for them, and five students are reciting classic Chinese poems for them,” Chinese teacher Ms. Zheng said.

The Chinese students also shadowed U.S. students, and some teachers hosted the visitors. AP Psychology teacher, Mr. Strachan, hosted two Chinese students, Claire and Caroline.

“We wanted to get an experience with different cultures,” Mr. Strachan said. “My kids were very excited.”

The Chinese students held a performance on Feb. 4 for their hosts, shadows and select classes in order to promote their culture and to welcome students to come visit them in China.

Twelve teenage students and three adults from Fudan High School in Chongqing, China visited the school Feb. 1-4.

The Chinese visitors shadowed a select group of students, taking part in their classes and experiencing U.S. high school first hand.

One of the shadows, Cheng Zi Yao, also known as Sunny, shared her impressions of Florida and our school.

Q: How do our teachers differ from yours? Do you like our teachers?

Sunny: “I like your teachers because they are very humorous and accommodating to the students. They give students the chance to think about questions by themselves, which is great.

I like how they also make students like their friends and give them the right to do what they want. Our teachers in China are patient but always very strict to us, mostly because everything in our school is dependent on us.

Also, our teachers come to our classroom, whereas your teachers stay in a classroom and the students have to move from class to class.”

Q: In China, your school hours are different from ours. How does your daily school schedule work in comparison to ours?

Sunny: “Yes, our school begins at 7:00 in the morning and goes until 12:00 in the afternoon. We then have a break, before we have to return to our school at 6:00 in the afternoon until 10:00 at night. In your school, teachers allow you to go to the bathroom during class, but our teachers do not. There is a 40 minute break given to us, where we can go to the bathroom and relax before more classes begin.”

Learn about cultures, preserve your own With its international magnet, PBHS has focused on educating its students about different cultures and how to apply the knowledge learned from them into our lives.

To aid in this process, our school has had students from a variety of countries, like Sweden and China, visit.

As students, we are given many opportunities to travel abroad and even learn about different cultures while at school. For such a small school, there are three foreign languages that students can learn: Chinese, Spanish and French. In these classes, students learn about the cultures that come with the language, along with learning the language itself.

Assistant Principal Narus believes that it is important for students to learn more about other countries.

“Students should learn about other cultures in order to be competitive in the global economy,” Ms. Narus said. “To make yourself a marketable person, you must be aware of the advantages and

disadvantages of different cultures and values that are present in the world.”

Being multicultural is a big part of the school’s identity, so, as a student, it is crucial to embrace this and learn about other cultures; however, students must also be aware of their own culture and that of Florida and the United States.

Although learning about the cultures and values of other countries is an extremely important thing, it is also important to hold your own values near and dear to your heart.

Junior Sierra Molina has a way to combine one’s cultures with those of other countries.

“Students should experience other countries’ cultures and traditions, but still preserve their own,” Molina said. “But they should use other countries’ cultures to preserve their own. They can do this by implementing the positive things that they learn into their own lives and merging them with their own cultures.”

cultures, while remembering the values that you learned from your family and community, you can merge them and learn more about yourself and your personal beliefs.

As the future of this country, this generation must be knowledgeable about the countries around

the world and about their cultures and values; however, since we are representing the United States on a global scale, we must continue to reflect on our own identity as a country and preserve it as long as we can.

Don’t pay up: Minumum wage should not be raised

The proper value of the minimum wage has been a longstanding debate topic for civilians and politicians alike. In his 2015 State of the Union

But a microscopic percent of people are being paid this amount.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 less than one percent of workers aged 16 and older in the United States were paid the minimum wage.

The raise in minimum wage is said to be most helpful for those

in poverty; however, according to economists Joseph Sabia and Richard Burkhauser, only 11.3 percent of the workers who make minimum wage are in impoverished households. This is such a small amount of people because minimum wage jobs are meant to be performed by entry-level workers who are young and/or have a low level of skill in a working environment. These low-paying positions are meant to be stepping stones that add job experience to the person’s resume and working ability as he works his way up to higher-paying jobs.

It is clear that the minimum wage system still works in this way by the fact that, according to Mark Wilson, former deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, in his research series “Policy

Analysis,” nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers move above the minimum wage within a year of working. This accelerated opportunity for promotion has been proven to motivate employees to work hard to be promoted. By raising the minimum wage, the incentive to work hard to reach a higher position, and therefore make more money, will decrease, if not cease to exist, in most situations.

An example of the effectiveness of the current minimum wage is seen in junior Kimberley Sinanan.

When she was first hired, she earned minimum wage; however, as she learned how to be a productive employee, she was compensated for her hard work.

“I’m thankful for whatever income I can get,” Sinanan said. “I

recently got a raise, so I’m especially happy.”

In “Policy Analysis,” Wilson also claimed that 63 percent of those who would gain from the raise in minimum wage are secondary or tertiary providers whose household income is already at least twice that of the poverty line.

This means that those in poverty, who are said to need the raise the most, would be affected an extremely limited amount by a raise in the minimum wage.

On the other hand, there are many people that would be affected negatively from a raise in the minimum wage.

Read it and weep: Yearbook not worth it As if the end of the year needed another reason to be exciting, yearbooks are distributed some time in late May, when the buzz for the upBy Amanda coming summer is Cisneros, Asst. at its highest.

News Editor For about a week and a half, every student can be seen huddled around the yearbook at some point of the day, craning his neck to get a look at the glossy pages with hopes that he might be on them.

Undoubtedly, yearbooks are a staple of the school system, and the end of the year just wouldn’t be the same without them. They fill us with nostalgia and excitement.

That is, until one takes a closer look.

Upon first glance, the gargantuan hardcover book may seem like

a steal.

We get all that content for just a few twenties? It’s so thorough that one may never get bored of looking at it. Who doesn’t love looking at a bunch of pictures of their friends that everyone else might see?

Unfortunately, upon close inspection, the yearbook just doesn’t make the grade. There are misspelled words on every page, pixilated pictures and wrong information.

I used to think that spending money I definitely couldn’t spare for such a memento was worth it.

Many students still think like that, while some aren’t aware of the yearbook price and others, like junior Jalynn Gordon, think that for one time, “$75 to $100 on a book is a fair price.”

However, if the yearbook staff feels the need to charge top dollar for a yearbook, then its product should be top quality, and that’s

Police abuse their power

Police are taking their power and abusing it. There is no reason a student should be pulled from a seat and dragged across the classroom for being disrespectful to the

teacher.

These cases of police brutality have been mainly against blacks and Hispanics. This is not a coincidence. This is institutionalized racism at work.

In Charleston, S.C., 19-year-old Dylann Roof murdered nine people in a church, and police put their guns back in their holsters when they pulled his car over and arrested him. Roof’s crime was much worse than Garner’s, but the white criminal was treated with respect under the law.

The police behind these attacks were not punished as harshly as they should have been. Most of the officers were put on paid leave; is that an actual punishment?

To end these violent acts, police must be punished for their actions. If they are held accountable for their actions, then other officers will take this as a warning.

Ms. Rodriguez, this year’s yearbook advisor, disagrees. She thinks the yearbook is worth every penny.

“There’s definitely a question of whether it’s possible to raise business ad prices, which could theoretically lower the cost for the students, but for this year, coming in new, I wanted to stick to the prices that have been shown to work for our students, those seniors’ parents (with senior ads) and our supportive business community.”

The printing process is expensive and drains most of the yearbook’s funds.

which differs based on how many yearbooks we have decided to order,” Ms. Rodriguez said. She suggests that for the price to drop, there needs to be more yearbooks ordered.

This is something I could get behind if, again, the quality was worth the price.

Ms. Rodriguez claimed that quality will be assured because the pages are produced, edited and sent to the printer throughout the year.

“We don’t have a set number of edits, but we do have a system,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “At the very least, each page will be edited by the section editor, our copy editor, our editor-in-chief and me.”

So, if indeed the yearbook is printed in parts, then each part should be thoroughly revised before being sent off. That should, in theory, yield the best results.

The baseball team, led by head coach Joe Giummule, has a record of 4-3 at press time, winning its most recent game against district rival Somerset Academy, evening its district record of 2-2.

Travelers take Switzerland, Italy

Assistant Principal Narus and the International Traveling Tornadoes have been planning and preparing for a trip to Switzerland and Italy for a year. This trip will take place during Spring Break, March 17-26.

According to Ms. Narus, 17 students and five adults will be on the field trip. Students paid $3,685 for their spots.

“We chose to go to Switzerland because we have a partnership with a school there, and Italy is a bordering country that everyone wanted to go to,” Ms. Narus said.

During their first three days in Switzerland, the Traveling Tornadoes will be in Brunnen. While there, they will attend a Swiss school that PBHS is partnered with.

Some students from this school will be coming to PBHS in either April or May of this year, according to Ms. Narus.

The students that are going on the trip seem to be most excited for visiting the Swiss school.

“I’m really excited to meet the Swiss students,” senior Hannah Lindgren said. “We’ve been talking to them and getting to know them already, and I really want to see what it is like to be a teenager in Switzerland.”

Senior Alexis Alonso agrees.

“The Swiss students are so funny.

I’m so excited to meet them in person,” Alonso said.

The travelers will also be visiting either a Swiss Army knife factory or a chocolate factory, depending on each student’s choice.

“On March 18, we’re going to do something pretty cool,” Ms. Narus said. “We’re going airboarding, which is kind of like sledding.”

Also on March 18, each student will be staying with a host family for one night to experience the realities of Swiss family life.

Junior Sarah Austin will be going on the trip. She said that she is “very excited” to attend the Swiss school.

On March 20, the Traveling Tornadoes will be departing Brunnen for Venice, Italy. While there, the students will go on a guided sightseeing tour. They will also be touring Doge’s Palace, a prime example of Venetian Gothic architecture.

The day before they depart, the travelers will be going shopping in Venice and going on a gondola tour through the canals.

They will leave Venice for Florence, Italy, on March 22. While there, they will tour the famous churches and museums of Florence, as well as go sightseeing and visit the Duomo, the city’s Renaissance cathedral.

Next, the Tornadoes will travel to Rome, the capital of Italy. While in Rome, the students will tour the Vatican, a city-state within Rome that is the seat of the Catholic Church and the home of the Pope.

Alonso has been on multiple school trips in the past, including the trips to Costa Rica and Sweden last year.

“I expect this trip to be similar to the Sweden trip, since they’re both in Europe,” Alonso said. “I am really looking forward to comparing the different European countries.”

As before, Alonso is looking forward to talking about the trip when she comes back.

“I love to share my experiences with my friends and peers,” Alonso said. “I’ve learned to appreciate what I have, while accepting and embracing the cultures that I learn about.”

This summer there will be a trip to Poland, according to Ms. Narus, and there may also be trips to Spain, France and/or Turkey next year.

Write to win: Scribes move on to Broward Literary Fair

At the school-wide Literary Fair, held on Feb. 18, creative writers were awarded prizes in 23 different categories, and winners qualified for the Broward County Literary Fair.

“My students in creative writing were required to enter,” English teacher Dr. Melillo said. “The majority of other entries are Ms. Wilson’s ninth graders. (The Literary Fair) was opened to the whole school through the English teachers.”

This year, 126 entries were divided into categories and read by the entire English department to determine first, second and third places.

First-place entries will be published in the student online literary magazine and submitted to the

“It was nice to have my writing be validated by my peers and teachers,” said senior Allison Wilson, who won first place in the sestina category.

Senior Ashley Gordon stole the show with six awards, one of which was ranked first place in the villanelle category.

Letter to the Editor: Good job, Good After playing varsity football for Pompano Beach High School for four seasons, captain Zachary Good graduated and earned a scholarship to Bridgewater College in Virginia last year. He is playing football and doing great in his first year of college. As the unquestioned leader of the PBHS Golden Tornadoes Football team during his senior year in 2014, Zachary led the team to an 8-2 season which included a SFC Conference championship; however, that would not be the last PBHS would see of a GOOD thing.

This past season, Zachary’s brother Logan was the starting quarterback of the varsity football team. Logan plays with the same tenacity and dedication that his older brother did when he was a star player at Pompano. Logan has never missed a practice since playing football at PBHS and has become the leader of the football team, taking the mantle from his brother. Just as Zachary had the previous season, Logan led the team to an 8-2 record and its second consecutive Southeastern

Football Conference championship.

Logan’s 20 touchdown passes were the highest total we have had at our school in years. His quarterback rating of 101.3 led the SFC. His play on the field was just the spark the team needed after Zachary went off to college. The best part of Logan Good’s game is his toughness. He missed a total of only three plays this season, despite taking many hard hits throughout the year.

son at PBHS and will lead a class of stars that include running back John Padgett, defensive end Rendell Andre, middle linebacker Zahir Cooper and cornerback Grady Keene. Logan’s leadership will be here once again for the 2016 season, and that is a GOOD thing!

Track coach plans to bring team to states

Track coach Thomas Didymus plans to take at least 50 percent of the team to the state championship in Bradenton this season.

“I don’t do this for my success; I do it for the athlete’s success which will be payment enough,” Coach Didymus said.

The track team competes in one of the most competitive districts in the state. The boys and girls state champions, Hallandale High School, are in the same district as our school.

The runners have a consistent training schedule to improve their skill sets and get stronger: Mondays and Wednesdays are power workouts, while Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for technical workouts.

According to Coach Didymus, the top members on the team are seniors Alexis Kerr and Nicole Romer, sophomore Zavia Jones,

and juniors John Padgett and D’Andre Nicholson.

Kerr placed sixth in the district meet last year for the shotput.

Romer has qualified for the county championships as a distance runner all three previous seasons.

Jones runs the 100-meter and 200-meter races, as well as the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.

Padgett runs the 100- and 200-meter. Didymus expects Nicholson to qualify for state this year with his fastest 800-meter time at 2 minutes, 8 seconds.

Quick hits The boys volleyball team, coached by Mr. Putnam, has a record of 1-5 at press time, and is sixth in the district at 1-4.

The girls tennis team has a record of 5-4 at press time.

The girls softball team is 6-5 at press time. Star players include sophomore Krystal Hinds, seniors Cameron King, Alyssa Wittie, Christina Nappo and Mekenzie Conway.

The girls flag football team’s first game is March 9 at home versus Archbishop McCarthy.
