Prep to ear Admins to decide if rallies return

Pep rallies have been cancelled until further notice, excluding Senior Send Off, as a result of what administrators describe as inappropriate behavior and lack of student participation.

“For the past couple of years, pep rallies have declined in the content and appropriateness and behavior of the students,” Assistant Principal Jill Samaroo said.

“Last year, we warned the students if the pep rally was like the one before, where we had water bottles thrown at people and someone actually getting a concussion from a ball being thrown by someone else, that we would no longer have pep rallies.

The appropriateness and content did not change for the pep rally and it was one of the worst pep rallies that we have seen.”

Administration will observe how students behave at the activities that take place throughout the year to determine whether or not pep rallies will be returning

“As the year goes on through spirit weeks and other things like that, (administration) is going to watch the students’ behavior and that’s going to determine how the Senior Send Off pep rally is organized,” senior SGA human relations secretary Alexa Salazar said. “So if they notice that we’re being rowdy during spirit week and lunchtime games, they’re not going to give us as much free range as we’d like to have.”

Senior Send Off was initially started by Samaroo during her time as SGA advisor.

It will still take place this year, and the behavior observed there will be a key part in deciding whether or not pep rallies will return next year.

“The Senior Send Off is going to really give us an indication of what will happen next year,” Principal Hudson Thomas said.

“The students change from year to year, and I’m really pleased with the atmosphere that we have at our school this year, so hopefully that will continue into the following year and we’ll see what happens.”

According to Thomas, students’ behavior was “not appropriate for our school,” particularly during the games that took place throughout the pep rallies. This year, both the administration and SGA want to “figure out what students want for student activities and spirit week” to make them more entertaining in the future.

“We’re working with SGA and are asking them to gather from students, ‘Well, what do you like about the pep rallies?’”

Samaroo said. “Most of the students say, ‘Nothing, we just like getting out of class,’ so why are we having a pep rally if no one even likes what we’re doing in them?”

Despite the administration’s claim that students don’t like pep rallies, the cancellation has caused uproar among both students and alumni, especially the senior

class. An anonymous senior created a petition to “Get senior events at Pompano Beach High School!” The petition has been signed by 536 people and asks that students are given “a homecoming pep rally and a proper Senior Send Off … so we can have a good last year of high school.”

“I graduated from Pompano and believe they should have all the fun we had,” alumna Kaitlyn Gott commented as her reason for signing the petition.

As of now the petition has not affected the state of pep rallies. It does, however, show that students are upset about the cancellation.

“I was the third person to sign the petition, and I signed it because pep rallies show school spirit, and if we don’t have pep rallies, there’s no school spirit to show,” senior Ben Bergeron said.

Nearly a quarter of the school’s population has signed the petition to get pep rallies back, but there are also students who don’t care that the pep rallies were cancelled this year.

“I don’t mind that the pep rallies were cancelled this year,” senior Kristina Gosselin said. “It was kinda the same thing each time, so unless they plan to make them more interesting, we’re not missing much.”

Although the physical pep rallies were cancelled, there will still be events throughout the school year similar to pep rallies, such as performances from the band and the cheerleading team and lunchtime games, as seen during Spirit Week leading up to Homecoming.

“It’s important that everyone knows that just because we can’t have pep rallies, that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun this year,” senior class president Lorraine Angelakos said. “We can do other events. We have a lot planned.”

New journal prints crappy issues

A new addition to the bathrooms has recently been introduced, “PBHS Stall Street Journal.” SGA had a good vision, summing up the week’s events, prominently the football game, along with events soon to happen and corresponding useful information. Props to the information and the graphics used to display the information.

However, that is about all they had right.

The first issue, released in August 2019, sets the precedent for the rest of the issues that followed — of what not to do. My first complaint starts with the name they chose, “Stall Street Journal,” an obvious allusion to the Wall Street Journal, one of the most

popular and respected media platforms in the nation. Stall Street journalists, if you’re going to play off such an established name, you owe it some respect by at least following basic journalistic principles.

But no, the first issue had editorializing, misspelled names and constant repetition of elements that should not have been there in the first place. The sloppy editorializing taints every issue released, with phrases like “We sadly lost …. We gave it our all …. Show your support at our next game,” are in the first issue alone.

If the writers of SSJ aren’t objectively reporting, even though their name suggests so, they could at least make it look like a re-

spectable newspaper. But it misspells Hollywood Hills High School (“Holleywood Hills”) and thinks legitimate punctuation includes the smiley-face emoticon (we call it a colon followed by a right parenthesis in this news room). Not to mention the blurry photo with no caption, to tell us what’s going on in the photo we can’t make out anyway.

The second issue showed some improvement, using appealing color choices to make information easier to read, but for the most part had many of the same problems. There was more editorializing, similar to the first issue, “We sadly lost ... our megabowl … our team showed great effort ... Be sure to come out on Thursday to show your support!” Not only is there editorializing, but more grammatical errors with the capitalization of “be” after a comma as well as the decision to not capitalize the days of the week in the football game recap for all three issues, a rule that we learned in elementary school and that stopped being cool to break in middle school. The unnamed staffers decided not to use a live photo but rather the staple mascot “Tommy Tornado,” which is clearly for the better, as their track record for taking a photo isn’t looking too bright.

The repetition of statements that can’t be backed up by any factual evidence, which would usually have a quote from a source used to establish this opinion occurs in every issue. A hypothetical situation that would follow the correct format would be: The team lost 55-0 in the Megabowl game Sept. 6 against Monarch High.

“The team gave its all and worked hard all night,” Coach Billy Bob said.

Instead, there are severe forms of editorializing that would give any journalist an aneurysm and might as well finish off the English teachers with the pubescent grammar and style.

That said, I do think the distributing of this via the bathroom is pretty genius, as that’s apparently where many kids are spending their time in school now. The graphics of information are getting better every issue, too.

But, dear SGA or “PBHS Voice” or administration or whoever is responsible, you should have come to us before distributing this for the whole school to see.

Small steps help towards gun control Though not many large actions have been taken towards curbing gun violence, some smaller actions have been taken that, while individually do not make a substantial difference, together can help stop gun violence.

One of the biggest actions taken across the country was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms ban-

In Florida, bump stocks were banned in March 2018, much quicker than at the federal level. This was part of a Florida Senate bill which also raised the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21 and established the Aaron Feis Guardian Program.

This program allows school districts to permit teachers to be armed in the classroom as long as teaching was not their sole responsibility in the school. This was a very controversial topic around the state, including in Broward County when then Sheriff Scott Israel was against arming teachers, but did comply

with one of the other major provisions of the bill which requires an armed security personnel at every public school. This goal has since been achieved through a combination of armed non-teacher guardians and Broward Sheriff Officers in all Broward schools.

It is not fully known how much of an impact these changes have made to gun violence and mass shootings. Even if it is slightly inconvenient, any small roadblock to prevent a person from using their gun to kill others unprovoked is a win that should not be overlooked. Though it may not be an assault weapons ban as, according to an August poll from Politico, 70% of voters would be in favor of, small steps can still help to shape the future and prevent future mass shootings.

'Voice' provides new outlet for talk, change

Administration has worked together with a select group of students in a new club called PBHS Voice. This club was created to provide a new, twoway line of communication between students and administration.

“It serves two purposes,” Principal Hudson Thomas said.

“To give a voice to the students and to also be able to get information out (to the student body).”

PBHS Voice first met at the end of May of last year, after Thomas came up with the idea for the club and spoke with other administrators about it.

“His idea was to bring students together to hear what their concerns are so that they can be addressed and also avoid rumors that usually spread … and help between communication lines between administration, teachers, school counseling and students,” Assistant Principal Jill Samaroo said.

Few people showed up to the first meeting, but membership has since greatly increased.

Membership is invite only.

A pre-selected group of school organizations, including athletics, JROTC, SGA, NHS and others, send representatives to each of the meetings to speak on behalf of their organizations. The group is meant to represent the student body as

a whole. “(Most students are) probably part of a group that has a member in the Voice,” Thomas said.

The club has intentionally not appointed any officers as it is meant to give everybody equal representation and opportunity to share their ideas and opinions.

“We don’t hold positions in the club,” said senior Lily Monaghan, who represents NHS. “Mostly because we all hold our own positions ... We are all seen as equals amongst each other in that room to help.

It’s a round-robin kind of thing where we all just talk and are able to bounce off each other.”

The lack of communication across the school has been a major focus of the club. Every meeting has gone over the issue, and several solutions have been implemented to help the problem.

“What we found out (is that) students weren’t getting the right information,” Thomas said.

On top of using its members to spread information via word of mouth, the club has improved communication by playing announcements made by PTVI during lunches and having extra information added to the end of morning announcements, such as dates for sporting events and Homecoming ticket sales.

“We are working towards getting the same feeling of a pep rally through the lunchtime games without having an actual set time for the pep rally,” senior SGA representative Victoria Santa Lucia said. “So we’re getting the same school

spirit, hype through new activities, through new events that we’re doing, through new spirit weeks to increase the school spirit, because that’s what the point of a pep rally really is.”

The extended lunches during Homecoming spirit week, the lunchtime games and the march after school leading to the short parade at the end of the week all came from PBHS Voice.

The club now meets semi-regularly, about once a month, during fourth block.

Other things the club has done includes creating themes for some football games, introducing a weekly newsletter called the “Stall Street Journal,” working on installing water bottle fillers and placing a large recycling bin in the center of the courtyard.

“It’s (a lot of) small things

that we’ve seen improvements of,” Santa Lucia said.

The group hopes to continue to bring about change to the school and increase cooperation between administration and students.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students to have their voices heard, and from the meetings that we’ve had I think it’s working,” Thomas said.

Dance team still has pep in step

Ignition Hip Hop has been showing its school spirit by performing at pep rallies for years. However, with pep rallies being indefinitely canceled, the team has had to find alternative ways to showcase itself, while adding extra pep to the student body.

“We weren’t as motivated to do it this year because of (the lack of pep rallies) and we felt like our talents were going to waste,” captain Natalia Philip said. “Pep rallies were the only way we were able to express ourselves.”

In response to how the team will overcome this new challenge, advisor Vaughn Henderson said, “We have to reimagine what we can do.”

The team plans on joining competitions, doing performances in the courtyard, participating in the talent and multi-cultural shows as well as other events to keep the club active.

The team performed at both lunches on Sept. 26 during Spirit Week and were invited to perform at the Homecoming tailgate, which helped them obtain more confidence.

“The pep rally was our only thing to show that we had a team,” co-captain Taina Lycee said. “We didn’t really know how to parade our group because the pep rallies were our time to shine, but now I feel like we gained courage again. I thought, ‘Okay, maybe this is another chance for us to actually use our group and our creativity.’”

Although the team mainly dances to hip-hop, it also has practiced ballet and danced to Hispanic and Jamaican music.

“Since we’re such a mixed group, we allow anything,” Philip said.

The team plans to hold tryouts soon and hopes to gain new members to increase its diversity and skill.

Ramirez leads XC, track teams

Senior Esteban Ramirez is running up an impressive resume.

Ramirez joined the cross country and track and field teams his freshman year. He is in his second year as captain for cross country and is the captain of the long-distance section of the track team.

Ramirez began running competitively in the seventh grade, though running had been a hobby for him since he was a child, where he was inspired watching his favorite characters on TV and movies.

“I was inspired by a lot of, I guess you could say, cartoon characters,” Ramirez said. “Flash, Dash from The Incredibles. I always liked to watch Looney Toons. Road Runner. I always liked the idea of outrunning your opponents, not necessarily beating them in a brains or brawns match.”

Success came early to Ramirez, who made it to counties the first year he ran competitively, and that success has continued to today. Last year, Ramirez placed third in regionals, qualifying for counties.

“My proudest moment was making it to counties my first year, making it to first place,” Ramirez said.

This year he’s focused on replicating some of his past success and making sure the team improves in the process. He says the

Already, the team has placed second in two of its regular-season dual meets and is on track to make it to regionals, and teammates are confident they will easily be able to hit those goals.

“This is the best team I’ve run with (in three years),” junior Joel Williams said. “So far we are going to make it to regionals this year.”

Teammates and coaches are impressed by Ramirez’s work ethic and determination. He often shows up early to practice, running laps around the track before any of his teammates or even the

“He has a great work ethic,” Coach Darius Brown said. “You don’t really have to teach him anything because he goes out and gets it. He’s basically self taught.

He goes out on the weekends, he does his runs. He’ll run a mile or two before I even get here.”

Ramirez attributes much of his success to his parents.

“They definitely have supported me a lot,” he said.

“He’s got great parents, wonderful parents,” Brown said.

Those around Ramirez note his hushed demeanor and how he is “very mature and very respectful,” according to Brown.

“He’s kind of a quiet kid,” teammate junior Sam Nyemetz said.

Since joining and becoming captain, though, Ramirez has become more assertive and grown into his role as a leader,

Meet the coach Firth bringing football back

Johnathan Firth, after 14 years as a Broward County teacher and six years as an assistant high school football coach, took over the struggling program before spring practice last year. It’s been a long road for the Philadelphia native who attended Florida State University and graduated with a degree in English education.

“I came here for the sun, good times and no snow,” Firth said.

He started playing tackle football for a local city league at the age of four, which was slightly ahead of the curve for boys his age.

“You’re not supposed to start until you’re six, but my dad knew some people and got me started,” Firth said. “It was just a city league so they slid me in and let me play early.”

He played linebacker for Archbishop Ryan High School, and, although he did not play any sports for FSU, he played in a tackle league for adults.

“At first he seemed like more of a gowith-the-flow kind of person, and now he is a person who tries to the best of his ability to lead the team,” Williams said.

Ramirez says he is comfortable in his role as captain, and taking on the “unspoken” responsibilities that comes with it.

He stresses the importance of making sure teammates do the right thing off the track, as well as on it.

“Disciplining everyone, making sure they’re eating right, they’re not eating crap food, showing up on time … The moment you step on the track it’s your responsibility as a leader, or even during school, when you’re seeing your teammates, making sure they’re doing the right thing, saying the right things,” Ramirez said.

As Ramirez is a senior, the team has begun looking ahead to a future without his leadership and abilities on the track.

Ramirez has done what he can to instill a winning mentality and culture, and his teammates have felt the effect.

“I think he gave us a good mindset, and we will be just as good or even better with him going on to college,” Williams said.

Despite this, the team knows that his absence will have a profound effect.

“He’s been a big help to our XC team, and like I said I don’t know what I’m going to do once he leaves,” Brown said. “He’s my big help. He just takes charge and I know he’s going to do great things. I’m trying to use him as much as I can. I’m gonna miss him next year.”

“Think city league, but for adults, and Mr. Jenkins actually owned the team,” Firth said, “and Coach Frey was our kicker.”

Frey, now athletic director, would pass his name around among coaching staff, and Firth landed a position as defensive coordinator under head coach Richard Nagy in 2013.

Firth coached for the first year of Nagy’s replacement, Melvin Jones, but was not part of the staff during last year’s 0-10 season.

“I took a year off and now I’m back,” Firth said.

One of the greatest challenges he and the team has faced this year is the depth, or more precisely the lack thereof.

“It makes things thinner, especially when you account (for) injuries,” Firth said.

Going forward, Firth thinks it is pivotal to rebuild and re-establish the team before any major movements can be done. The entire roster increased this year from 17 players at the end of last year to 42 thus far.

Another important change is the team’s winning its first game in two years, and it was the small shift in momentum the team needed.

“I don’t want to dwell on one win, but you have to start somewhere,” Firth said.

The boys golf team is currently 9-1 and placed third in the BCAA championship on Oct. 2, after winning the tournament last year.

Billy Hammond, the coach, attributes the changes this year to his team’s roster dropping from nine to six players.

“We’ve always been very deep, but not as much this year,” Hammond said.

This year’s team is mainly underclassmen, but Hammond says the team’s skill level will grow with more practice.

“They’ll all become better course managers with some time to mature,” Hammond said.

The girls volleyball team was 8-7 before its final regular season game on Oct. 15 at North Broward Prep, according to Maxpreps.

The girls golf team finished 3-4 according to senior Auset Ifill-Dupoux. Both the boys and girls teams were scheduled to compete at districts on Oct. 14.

The swim team is currently 3-3 according to junior Fernanda Diniz. “(We) have changed because of all the new swimmers we got,” junior Lindsay Putney said.

The district meet will be Oct. 23 at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

The football team is 1-7, losing to Coral Glades 33-12 on Oct. 11. It won its first game in two years at home against Miami Country Day on Sept. 12 by the score of 20-10.

Senior linebacker Chad Singleton is proud of how this year’s team has worked hard.

“Everyone pulled their weight and it

feels great to be a part of a team willing to work,” Singleton said.

Coach Johnathan Firth said he is looking to use a young core of players to help build for the future.

“This is a new brand of Pompano football with exciting young players,” Firth said.

Senior Night will be Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

The boys cross country team finished its regular season 7-5, according to MileSplit Florida. Team members give credit to their coach. “(Coach Darius Brown) loves to work us in practice, and he motivates us,” freshman Evan Werth said. “At the end of the race, he is out there cheering.”

The team will compete at the BCAA championship on Oct. 17 at Markham Park, and districts on Oct. 22 at Tradewinds Park.
