1. LUXURY STADIUM SKYBOX fall 2020 | 6 weeks | 4,200 sq ft Site: Los Angeles, CA The inspired artist is from the Calabasas area. The hometown sports stadium is the SoFi stadium in Los Angeles, CA home to the LA Rams and LA Chargers. The stadium is down the street from LAX in Inglewood. It is a roofed facility that neighbors the Hollywood Park Casino.

The client is the CEO of a successful alternative hip-hop record label. One of their represented artists that best embodies the direction of the label is Jaden Smith. Jaden’s music pairs dark lyrics with calming airy beats. Jaden’s brand features frequent use of the colors pink, blue, yellow, and black. Under his branding these colors of the sunset have taken on new meaning, representing control and power. The skybox captures the nonconformity and emotional expression of alternative hip-hop through a seamless blend of industrial dystopian elements disarmed by a soft gentle atmosphere. Colors true to Jaden’s brand are used throughout to soften the ridged man-made interventions introduced into the space.

Based on the nonconformity culture of alternative hip hop the skybox is designed along an altered grid. Angled forms are featured throughout the space creating jetting edges that guide the user. The bar on the first floor acts as the main intervention within the space, dictating the first level’s circulation. Dispite the harsh angles, a relaxed atmosphere is achieved with soft lighting, textures, and cool colored accents of pink and indigo. Elements such as graffiti, chain link fencing, and swings create a playful urbanscape for the interior.

The angled intervention is the basis for the strong geometries throughout the skybox.

At the core of the space the jetting bar’s distinct features add to the industrial dystopian landscape. Corrugated metal wraps across the front of the dual height surface. Backed by chain link fencing, accents of pink lighting shine through to soften the dark elements and reflect off of the polished concrete flooring.

ENTERTAINMENT AREA

INTERACTIVE FEATURE A double swing set is featured along the left of the space. Behind the swing is a neon sign reading a song lyric from Jaden’s hit sing Icon. The lyric chosen, “we are too hot in the business” has a bold confidence that Sundown Records wishes to promote within company culture. This swing wall adds to a playful urban interior that also provides a perfect place for an Instagram photo op.

The skybox is designed using industrial materials to build upon an urban environment. Colors accent the space to soften the hard finishes. Sustainability was taken into consideration.

2. NEXT TECH SATELLITE OFFICE fall 2020 | 8 weeks | 11,500 sq ft Site: Atlanta. GA The provided building shell to design within is the current Steelcase WorkLife Center Showroom located on 1545 Peachtree St NE. The two story building is to be the new home for a tech start up who develops lifestyle and wellness apps.

NEXT is a global technology company specializing in all aspects of health and wellness to improve the general happiness of people all over the world. Smiling is a simple thing that will not only leave you feeling happier but also with a positive health effect on both the body and mind. When you smile, 4 hormones are released in your brain. These work together to relieve stress, lower heart rate, increase productivity, and reduce anxiety, leaving us feeling happy. These four hormones are neuropeptides, serotonin, endorphins, dopamine. Each hormone has a role in regulating our positive emotions. Neuropeptides are responsible for distributing messages with information to the entire body. Serotonin help to stabilize our mood and reduce depression when we smile. Endorphins fight off feelings of stress and pain leaving us calm and relaxed. Dopamine is the our source of motivation by allowing us to feel rewarded when we’ve accomplished something.

The NEXT office will foster a positive atmosphere with spaces inspired by a particular aspect related to the science of a smile. Motivation spaces such as the inspiration zone and project team spaces will be balanced by relaxation spaces like private enclaves and in between zones. Paths of travel are conduits for occupants to distribute themselves about.

A central axis defined by the grand staircase acts as a stabilizer between the two floors and anchors the Motivation and relaxation spaces. Materials and finishes hold an elegant feeling paired with ties to natural elements that create a fresh and health work environment compliant with WELL building standards.

POST- PANDEMIC CONSIDERATION People returning to work post COVID-19 are going to be reliant on their work environment to help them maintain proper social distancing and feel safe while at work. The NEXT office space has been designed with Steelcase’s 3 key planning strategies in mind.

1 Density

Additionally, the logo features a “smile” that stretches across the graphic and acts as a subtle reminder to NEXT’s goal to help people build a lifestyle of happy moments and smiles.

PHONE BOOTH ELEVATION Adjacent to the upper project team space is a series of Steelcase SnapCab Pods that provide opportunity for independent concentration away from the mainly open office space.

Through out the two levels Steelcase Victor2 three opening recycling/ waste bins are placed next to every doorway and at the end of every hallway to encourage sustainable practices.

3. PHOENIX PUBLIC LIBRARY spring 2020 |12 weeks | 13,350 sq ft Site: Phoenix, AZ The provided building shell to design within is to be located in downtown Phoenix. The library will be a place to house community outreach programs. In response to increasing affordable housing needs of urban areas, this project also includes a multi-family housing component in its mixed-use development.

The Phoenix Public Library will be expanding to a new branch to house their expanding collections and archives, and to better respond to the needs of their communities. This new branch will serve as the educational hub for the diverse Phoenix population and act as a central gathering space for children, teens, and adults of various socio-cultural and economic backgrounds. Programs such as story hours, after-school programs, GED prep classes, adult/senior training will be provided. Additionally, the library’s second floor will house apartment units affordable to the residents who earn up to 60% AMI to help tackle the housing crisis of the metro Phoenix area.

Based off the lore of Phoenix and the idea of rising from the ashes, the Enrich library creates oasis like spaces that curate ones natural curiosity for knowledge. As the occupant moves through the space they are gradually transitioning from areas of high activity to calming areas for personal focus. Through drawing in different groups of people to come and engage socially and mentally, the library becomes a diverse and collaborative environment for children, teens, and adults to form a dynamic community.

CHILDREN’S STACKS

DOUBLE HEIGHT FIXTURE Made from 14 amber colored orbs this lighting feature is located above the central reading area within the children’s zone and is a double height fixture that can be seen as the user moves across the library up towards the mezzanine. This fixture gives the effect of fire embers rising from the first level to the second level.

As you work your way through the cafe area up to the mezzanine the atmosphere shifts from being a place of high activity to a coming retreat for personal focus.

LOBBY PERSPECTIVE

DIRTT WILLOW GLASS MURAL Along the back wall is a painting done by artist Phyllis Shafer depicting a romanticized desert landscape. This piece of are is displayed using DIRTT Willow glass to provide a durable and easy to maintain finish.

CROSS SECTION NTS DIRTT integrated technology walls are used with in the private study rooms and within nook spaces on the mezzanine.
