Katie Clark

Art is not only my passion, but also my therapy

M

y name is Katie, I am a 26 year old artist living in Gloucestershire, UK. Which means we very fortunate to live in an area which is abundant with inspiration. The scenery is an artist’s dream and there are plenty of art fairs and exhibitions all year round. There are many local community events including an annual Easter Egg hunt in our local village, which I was really proud to be a part of this year. It was a fantastic event to showcase my work and a really fun day out for the family. My passion for art started when I was around 6 years old. As an only child it was something which kept me occupied for hours. I would say I am predominantly a painter, with my medium of choice being acrylic paints. However, from time to time I like to venture out of my comfort zone and experiment with other materials to be inspired by classical poses, but as most of my work. Over the years art has developed into not only a passion but also a form of therapy. In the weeks after welcoming our second child into the world, I was diagnosed with post-partum panic

“My medium of choice being acrylic paints. However, from time to time I like to venture out of my comfort zone“ disorder. I was so physically and mentally exhausted that I really struggled to motivate myself to start painting again. In fact, painting was the last thing on my mind. Eventually I managed to find the courage to pick up that paint brush again. It was like I had found a piece of myself in every brush stroke. I realised it had been such a long time since 6

I had created something that was just for me. I was not being bound by course structures and module criteria. I was just creating.

“I was diagnosed with post-partum panic disorder. I was so physically and mentally exhausted that I really struggled to motivate myself“ I am now very much looking forward to carrying this new found creativeness back into my studies. As from September this year I pick up where I left off with the continuation of my Fine Arts Degree, following some time out with our young children. I feel a sense of excitement and anticipation to see which road my life and studies will take me whilst I find my way through the Art Industry.

Gregory Logan Dunn Mastering the Depths of Artistic Expression

A

Demos Envenomous - Oil on Linen 72 x 63 2017

rt has always been a transformative force, capable of healing wounds, expressing emotions, and reflecting the human condition. Gregory Logan Dunn, a remarkable artist hailing from the vibrant D.C. punk music scene of the 1980s, exemplifies this power through his abstract body of work. His journey, marred by personal struggles and buoyed by triumphs, has shaped him into an artist of extraordinary depth and resilience. Dunn artistic odyssey began in his early years, where he found solace in drawing. However, it was during his tumultuous adolescence that he discovered the electric convergence of art and music in the D.C. punk scene. In the company of influential bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and Rites of Spring, Reed witnessed first hand how art and music intertwine, sparking a creative fire within him that would endure for decades to come. Life took unexpected turns for Dunn when he faced the challenges of adulthood. After experiencing the breakdown of a marriage and spiralling into a deep depression, 8

art emerged as his guiding light, leading him toward salvation. Dunn embarked on a journey of self-discovery and enrolled at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, where he honed his craft and earned a BFA in General Fine Arts in 1998. During his time at the institute, Reed delved into the works

“Richter’s layered abstract paintings resonated deeply with Dunn, inspiring him to develop a signature style“ of artistic luminaries such as Sigmar Polke, Ross Bleekner, Barnett Newman, and Gerhard Richter. Richter’s layered abstract paintings resonated deeply with Dunn, inspiring him to develop a signature style that emulated the intricate layering techniques of the renowned German artist. Through tireless experimentation and a profound exploration of materials, Dunn sought to capture the essence of colour, texture, and form in a purely abstract manner.

However, Dunn’s artistic journey has not been devoid of personal struggles. Battling with depression, accompanied by sporadic episodes of mania, he encountered obstacles that tested his creative resolve. Intertwined with these challenges was a battle with alcoholism, which ultimately led him to seek help and embark on a path to recovery. In 2008, Dunn’s commitment to sobriety and mental health set him on a new trajectory, one marked by personal growth and artistic renaissance.

Gregory Dunn’s art is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of artistic expression. It serves as a reminder that creativity can emerge from the depths of despair, transforming pain into beauty and darkness into light. With each stroke of his brush, Dunn evokes emotions, provokes contemplation, and captures the essence of the human experience.

Since then, Gregory Dunn has emerged as a prolific artist, his talent flourishing in the wake of his triumph over personal demons. His artwork, a poignant fusion of mania, depression, and profound artistic vision, explores contemporary issues and historical themes with remarkable depth and sensitivity. Through his mastery of colour, texture, and composition, Dunn invites viewers into a world where emotions collide and profound stories unfold on the canvas. Dunn’s artistic journey has garnered recognition and admiration across the globe and you can purchase his art from Saatchi art. His work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Collaborations with esteemed institutions such as Galeria Azur, Artifact Gallery, and Yudian Gallery have showcased Dunn's unique artistic voice to a diverse and captivated audience. Furthermore, his position as an artist Pro Tem at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, solidifies his presence as an artist of remarkable stature.

In this issue of our Hidden Talents magazine, we celebrate the indomitable spirit of Gregory Dunn , whose journey of self-discovery and artistic evolution serves as an inspiration to artists and art enthusiasts alike. Through his extraordinary body of work, Reed invites us to explore the depths of our own emotions and embrace the transformative power of art. Instagram: @gregorylogandunnart

My Art is my form of keeping a diary

M

y journey began with the love of art back while I was at school and then transpired throughout my adult years.

It was during the lockdown I began experiencing and experimenting with the love of art. Starting with paint by numbers and then a free form of expressing my art by pouring paint and fluid art. I found this flow of colour, contour and merging to create a masterpiece a way to bond all of my ideas and thoughts together with paint. They say ‘putting pen to paper’ is good for the mind but so is ‘putting paint on canvas’ in my mind.

“Putting pen to paper’ is good for the mind but so is ‘putting paint on canvas’ in my mind“

The best thing about art is you can never get it wrong. It’s a form of my self-expression and I’m inspired by the people around me, the conversations I have, the feelings and the journeys of my travels and experiences. I suppose my love for art was also ignited by a men’s wellness group, Humen which I attended. 10

Hidden Talents Magazine

A group supporting men discussing their own well-being practices around mental health and ways to support each other. One of the attendee’s love of art resonated with me which inspired me to start my art journey. From then on, I began making several pieces of art, inspired by my travels and thoughts, whether this was wildlife or scenery. I will always have a routine of making art, and I would start with some good music, with my headphones in to inspire me; whether this is some classical music, current chart, dance or Indian or Hindi music. I’d say the music speaks to me by invoking a feeling, which then prompts me with what colour I’d use and the type of art I’ll be producing.

“Supporting men discussing their own well-being practices around mental health and ways to support each other.“ Each of my paintings is meaningful to me; whether it’s based on my mood, thoughts, feelings or emotions and I hope anyone who comes across my art will be inspired as I have been by creating it. “My Art is my form of keeping a diary,” a quote I love by Pablo Picasso. a character, landscape, architectural design, I always include some nature elements into it while keeping a magical fantasy feel to them. I am early into my career, and I have an arts award with the ikon gallery, I have created fashion illustrations for a fashion students degree show, produced some mental health related art for national doodle day, have been commissioned character designs around sustainability for Birmingham city university, painted a school graduation banner and have also been commissioned for tattoo designs. I like my audience to feel joy when they see my work. I do this by using colour palettes with bright colours and creating characters that are sweet to give them their daily dose of serotonin. On most occasions I will design my characters to be powerful, inspirational and I give them relatable personalities. Studios such as Disney and Pixar have inspired me on my

journey to creating characters. I believe that creating those characters are important as they become a big part of a person’s life growing up and they have inspiring stories that stick with them through adulthood. My goal for the future is to never stop doing what I’m doing, to continue making people happy and aim high.

“Studios such as Disney and Pixar have inspired me on my journey to creating characters“ I enjoy working in multiple different mediums however, I mostly work digitally. When I was younger, I took inspiration from animals and liked to create magical creatures. I still do this by taking trips to view wildlife and study them. As of recently, I have been interested in developing my characters in 3d form by sculpting them traditionally and digitally. This helps me understand my characters form better and is also an important skill to have in the game and film industry. I am currently developing my skills to work in that field in the future whilst Being open to other opportunities. Instagram: Kelsielaurenart

During 2021, I had a painting in the Lowry Exhibition “ Days like These” which began as an on line exhibition and then when the Lowry opened up again after lockdown they printed out the on line images and exhibited to the public. 2022 was exciting as I began the year with the 8 women project and also applied for “Drawers Off ” the Channel 4 programme that recently aired in June 2022. 350 artists applied and I was one of 25 chosen.
