Unveiling The Spacekins: A Journey of Coastal Creativity

Ryan Harris, born in Margate , embarks on a creative odyssey that intertwines his childhood beachcombing adventures with a passion for environmental stewardship and imaginative artistry. Growing up amidst the desolate beauty of Margate's shoreline in the 1980s, Ryan, alongside his father and brother, found solace in collecting shells, driftwood, and sea glass—a practice that would later shape his artistic vision.

Today, against the backdrop of Margate's transformation into a vibrant artistic community, Ryan continues his coastal expeditions, but with a new purpose.

Armed with his faithful companion, Sidney, Ryan now scours the beaches, not just for treasures, but for discarded debris, transforming his beachcombing into a form of ecoconscious artistry.

Enter "The Spacekins," enigmatic inhabitants of Ryan's world, inspired by the debrisladen Asteroid Belt—a parallel to the ephemeral nature of coastal landscapes. These tiny, space-suited beings embody Ryan's fascination with exploration and discovery, each character reflecting a facet of human experience.

Hidden Talents Magazine 11

Central to Ryan's artistic narrative is "The Dirty Gherkins," colossal alien vessels reminiscent of Earthly litterbugs, whose indiscriminate dumping fuels the Asteroid Belt's surreal ecology. Drawing parallels to human impact on the environment, Ryan's creations serve as poignant reminders of our collective responsibility.

Blurring the lines between sculpture, painting, and illustration, Ryan's works defy categorization, embracing a rich tapestry of mixed media. His "Relief Illustrations" invite viewers into a whimsical realm, where tactile textures and vibrant hues breathe life into his imaginative universe.

Despite his humble beginnings, Ryan's artistry has garnered acclaim, gracing the walls of local galleries and captivating audiences with its charm and depth. With each piece finding a home, Ryan's journey comes full circle, his creations sparking wonder and inspiration in those who encounter them.

As Ryan reflects on his artistic journey, he finds profound fulfilment in channelling his childhood memories and environmental advocacy into a medium that transcends boundaries, inviting others to join him on a voyage of creativity and compassion. For Ryan Harris, the thrill of artistic expression is indeed beyond description—a testament to the enduring power of imagination and the transformative potential of coastal inspiration.

Craftsman Tom Jennings Finds Joy In Carving Wood and Revels in the Aroma of Oak.

It starts with the simple pleasure of carving wood. The Blues of the American South showed me whittling, in that slow and easy style, front porch close to the land, and to the family. I came to associate woodcarving with a simple life. As I got into it, I discovered it contained all the right challenges and lessons for me as well.

I love the atmosphere of the workshop, the smells of oak and sap and sawdust. My children in the next room playing. The age of the tools. Just handle and blade. Straightforward. Timber seasoning on the shelves. A list of commissions waiting for me to carve.

When I used to make films about crafts people and artists, It was a woodcarver who most captured my imagination, and I lifted my whittling practice up as I learned his skills in the long editing process. I happened to land in green burial work, carving for the bereaved, sculptures and posts to symbolise something meaningful about the lost one. With enough experience and skill, I finally

Hidden Talents Magazine 13

granted myself the right to explore wood artistically as well. Now, In a Leroy Setziol style, I like to ‘grid’ tropical hardwoods with a saw and carve spontaneously from one end of the board to the other. Improvisation. It’s not until the last cuts that I look back and realise what I was doing. And somehow it seems there was a theme all along, and I name it. It’s important that I don’t know what I’m doing. If I have a plan, it means I’m thinking my way through, and that’s not as clever. If my hand, blade and grain can form a working doorway, the imagination will come through, and that’s where the gold lies. It reminds me of archaeology. Insights and surprises emerge. It can be unnerving. We don’t always feel safe surrendering to an unknown part of the mind. That’s the risky work of the artist. If you shy away, you probably won’t speak to others in a true enough way

Hidden Talents Magazine 14

to gain their interest. Which is the great aim, to connect with others, in that mysterious place. That, and the opposite. To be alone, working on something, with a great sense of delight at what this could be, where it could end up, what it could bring, and what I’ll discover. To form a meaningful image out of nowhere, it’s a beautiful mystery.

Jackie Bufton

70-YearOld Artist Masters Stained Glass Craft and Inspires with Engaging Talks !

At 70 years old, I have been involved in Arts and Crafts for over 30 years. In my younger life, I honed my skills as a stained-glass artist and I continue to practice and deliver talks on this subject. However, I’ve also dabbled in other crafts, making me quite eclectic. I now primarily focus on Pewter, Glass, and Paper crafts. Additionally, I love painting in both acrylics and watercolours.

“Why set forth on a fresh adventure?”

I often find my mind spinning like a tumble dryer, filled with a multitude of thoughts and ideas. To cope with this creative whirlwind, I decided to put pen to paper. And thus, the concept of a fun digital zine was born.

Excitedly, I crafted and wrote the first issue—it was just a few pages but gave me the structure that I needed. I wanted

Hidden Talents Magazine 19

to offer more than just words. So, I painted a “flower of the month” sharing a piece of my artwork with readers. The zine made its way to friends and family, and their feedback, though perhaps a tad biased, encouraged me to continue. Determined, I committed to publishing it monthly for a year, enjoying the process of design and witnessing my ideas blossom into something I hoped others would enjoy.

As the zine expanded, so did its audience. Friends digitally shared it via email and Facebook, including reaching other countries. Each issue now usually revolves around a theme. And featured in its pages are glimpses of my home town—the picturesque English Riviera town of Torquay in Devon, England, or nearby locales. For instance, the March issue featured Agatha Christie, the renowned author with strong ties to this very place.

Whenever possible, I like to spotlight fellow artists—sharing their work through links, photographs, or even YouTube demonstrations—all with their permission. In every issue, I design and give away printable digital papers for use in the featured crafting activities, along with instructions, templates and

Hidden Talents Magazine 20

colouring pages.

It became obvious to me that a name was needed for my effort and after much thinking around the point of the zine I settled on Inspire and Create with a strapline of Illuminating a Creative Life, a name was born. And that is my hope – that through my sharing I can inspire someone on their creative journey.

Small Footsteps

“Sometimes I feel so small and insignificant,” said Ribbons, the cat. “And you’re so big and strong and do great things.”

“This may be true,” replied the horse. “But, don’t underestimate your worth little cat, for you don’t need to be big and strong to make a difference. Look behind you.”

“I don’t see anything but my tiny footprints in the snow?” said Ribbons, feeling confused.

“Quite!” smiled the horse. “For it’s often the smallest of paws that leave the biggest prints of love in our hearts, and my heart is full of it because of you! Don’t you ever change.”

Embracing Artistic Freedom The Journey of Justyna Rzepa

In a world often dictated by conformity and commercialism, Justyna Rzepa stands as a beacon of artistic authenticity and freedom. From her earliest memories, art has been intertwined with her life, manifesting itself in various forms – drawing, singing, dancing, acting, and photography. Yet, among these creative endeavours, painting has remained her steadfast companion, her sanctuary of self-expression.

For Justyna, creating art is not a forced endeavour; it flows naturally, like a gentle stream of consciousness. It is a therapeutic act, a means to disconnect from the chaos of the world and reconnect with her innermost emotions. "I paint what I like; it's my world, and I decide how to present it," she affirms, encapsulating the essence of her artistic freedom.

Hidden Talents Magazine 24

In her studio, amidst swirls of colour and strokes of inspiration, Justyna finds solace and joy. Each canvas becomes a vessel for her thoughts, feelings, and experiences, capturing moments of significance in her life's journey. Unlike some artists driven solely by commercial success, Justyna feels no pressure to conform to trends or cater to market demands. For her, art is a deeply personal expression, a reflection of her inner truth rather than a commodity to be sold.

Inspired by the beauty of nature and the world around her, Justyna's work often revolves around landscapes, seascapes, and still-life compositions. Yet, her latest series, "The Source of Existence," delves deeper into the realm of spirituality, exploring themes

of transcendence and inner growth. It is a testament to her evolving artistic vision and her unwavering commitment to authenticity.

Currently, Justyna Rzepa's creations grace the walls of the Direct Art Action gallery in the UK, inviting viewers into her world of colour, emotion, and introspection. Each painting is a window into her soul, a silent dialogue between artist and audience, transcending the boundaries of time and space.

As Justyna continues to journey through life, her art remains her most faithful companion, a constant source of inspiration and renewal. In a world where conformity often stifles creativity, she stands as a reminder of the transformative power of artistic freedom. Through her work, she invites us to embrace our creative instincts, to paint our world as we see fit, and to find solace and joy in the act of creation itself.

Brushstrokes of Resilience

David Irish sat amidst the aged walls of his studio, a relic of Birmingham’s industrial past. The space, lacking modern comforts, bore the raw essence of creation—a sanctuary for his artistic endeavors.

Having traversed the vibrant landscapes of art college in the seventies, David's journey as an artist found its anchor in this unassuming haven. Despite its austere ambiance, the studio resonated with the echoes of his passion, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his craft.

As the world grappled with the tumult of a global lockdown, David found solace in his canvases, each stroke a defiant whisper against the chaos outside. Days blurred into nights, fueled by an insatiable urge to capture the essence of his visions.

His works, born from the crucible of isolation, bore the imprint of his introspection. Repeated motifs danced across the canvas, weaving a tapestry of emotion and expression. While some sought to unravel the threads of meaning, David remained steadfast in his belief that art transcends the confines of interpretation.

In the silence of his studio, narratives unfolded with each brushstroke, inviting viewers to explore the depths of their

Hidden Talents Magazine 26

own perception. The simplicity of his compositions belied the complexity of human experience, inviting contemplation without the burden of deciphering hidden truths.

Amidst the rough textures and ambiguous spaces, authenticity thrived—a testament to David's unwavering dedication to his craft. Each painting, a vessel for shared moments of connection, offered solace in a world fraught with uncertainty.

As the warmth of dawn bathed the studio in its golden embrace, David surveyed his creations with a sense of quiet satisfaction. In their imperfections lay the beauty of resilience, a reflection of his enduring spirit in the face of adversity.

For David Irish, the studio was more than a mere workspace—it was a sanctuary where the echoes of his soul found expression, painting the canvas of life with hues of hope and resilience.

Masterful Portraits Unveiled

Masterful Portraits Unveiled: Artist Anthony Kwakwa Jr Delve into Depth

With Graphite and Charcoal

In my journey exploring portraiture, I delve into the complex world of facial expressions, using graphite, charcoal pencil and sometimes pastels as my medium of choice.

I strive to capture the essence of my subject and reveal the layers of emotion hidden beneath the surface with each stroke and dot.

Facial expressions act as windows to the soul, revealing untold stories and untold emotions.

Through art, I strive to immortalize these fleeting moments and freeze them forever. I try to translate the things that are difficult to see or understand in the human mind into art for my viewers to appreciate and comprehend. These things are interactions or processes that go beyond the human soul or the spirit and highly influence the behavioural patterns of people. As humans and spiritual beings at the same time, we need to understand how our two identities coordinate and influence each other. Wars have been fought because of emotions that were brewed from within one’s soul. Ties have been made as a result of emotions that were brewed from

Hidden Talents Magazine 28
Dr Sonnie Badu

within individuals. Events that are yet to happen, whether good or bad are going to be influenced by emotions from people. The fact is, that emotions play a vital role in our existence as social beings.

Graphite and charcoal pencils give you the versatility to play with light and shadow,

allowing you to precisely sculpt shapes and textures.

Every line and every point becomes a means of expression, and every outline and every detail is carefully reproduced.

In the quiet and intimacy of my studio, I embark on a journey of connection and empathy.

Each portrait is a dialogue between me as an artist and subject, a silent exchange of understanding and empathy.

Through my work, I challenge the viewer to think about the complexity of human nature, emotions and the beauty of imperfection.

Portraits transcend the boundaries of time and space and become mirrors reflecting the shared human experience. Ultimately, my goal is to evoke a sense of resonance and recognition, allowing the viewers to see themselves in the faces that adorn my canvases.

Through the interplay of graphite and charcoal, I seek to not only capture similarities but also reveal the deep humanity that unites us all.

Tips for Oil Painting on Paper:

Choosing the Best Paper and Techniques

Oil painting on paper offers a unique opportunity for artists to explore the medium in a versatile and cost-effective way. While traditionally oil paints are applied to canvas or wood panels, painting on paper provides a different texture and absorbency, resulting in distinct visual effects. However, it does come with its own set of challenges. Here are some tips for oil painting on paper, along with recommendations for the best paper to use.

Hidden Talents Magazine 35

Choosing the Right Paper:

• Weight and Thickness: Opt for heavyweight paper (around 300 gsm or higher) to prevent warping and buckling from the oil paint's moisture. Thicker paper also provides better support for layering and manipulation of paint.

• Surface Texture: Consider the texture of the paper surface based on your preference and painting style. Rough or textured papers create interesting brushwork effects, while smoother surfaces are suitable for detailed work.

• Acid-Free Paper: Choose acid-free paper to ensure the longevity of your artwork. Acidic papers can degrade over time, causing the colours to fade and the paper to yellow.

• Paper Sizing: Look for papers that have been properly sized to resist oil absorption. Sizing prevents the oil from seeping into the paper fibres too quickly, allowing for better control over the paint application.

Hidden Talents Magazine 36

Preparation and Techniques:

• Priming the Paper: Before painting, it's advisable to prime the paper with a suitable primer or gesso. This seals the paper, providing a stable surface for the oil paint and preventing it from being absorbed too quickly.

• Layering Thinly: Due to the absorbent nature of paper, it's best to apply oil paint in thin layers. This allows each layer to dry properly without causing the paper to become saturated.

• Blotting and Dabbing: If excess oil accumulates on the paper surface, gently blot it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Avoid excessive rubbing, as it may damage the paper fibers.

• Drying Time: Be patient with drying times, as oil paint on paper can take longer to dry compared to other surfaces. Ensure proper ventilation in your workspace to aid in the drying process.

Hidden Talents Magazine 37

• Varnishing: Once your oil painting on paper is complete and fully dry, consider varnishing it to protect the surface and enhance colour vibrancy. Use a varnish specifically designed for oil paintings and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Best Paper Brands for Oil Painting• Arches Oil Paper: Known for its quality and durability, Arches Oil Paper is specifically designed for use with oil paints. It comes in various sizes and textures to suit different preferences.

• Strathmore 400 Series Oil Painting Paper: This paper is primed with a proprietary acrylic primer, making it suitable for oil painting. It offers a smooth surface ideal for detailed work.

• Canson XL Oil & Acrylic Paper: Affordable yet reliable, Canson XL Oil & Acrylic Paper is a popular choice among artists. It has a texture similar to canvas and is available in pads or sheets.

Oil painting on paper presents a rewarding challenge for artists, allowing for experimentation and creative expression. By selecting the right paper and employing appropriate techniques, you can achieve stunning results with this versatile medium. Remember to enjoy the process and embrace the unique qualities that oil painting on paper has to offer
