Dear Readers, Welcome to the latest edition of Hidden Talents, the international art quarterly magazine that showcases the talents of emerging and established artists from around the world. aving experienced amazing memories, I turned to paint to express my feelings. Drawn to the freedom of the world around me, I found inspiration in the coolest of blues, golden sands and kaleidoscope of flora and fauna, forever changing landscape and unpredictable weather of our British Isles.

Revisiting art during lockdown 001, I experimented with various mediums, initially expecting to paint primarily with watercolour.

However, I introduced myself to the amazing and versatile world of acrylics, where the time to work the paint is very limited. These suites me as those who know me will confirm that this definitely reflects my personality! I fell in love with its ability to create texture, depth of vibrant colours, and, most important to me, movement.

Inspired by our coastlines and my love of gardening, my artwork captures a moment in our ever-changing world. I work in an impressionistic style with a hint of abstraction thrown in for good measure.

I

Beauty with Papier Mâché

am a figurative sculptor in papier maché, but instead of the paper strip and glue method we all remember from school, I take the traditional ingredients of paper, flour and glue and make a ‘clay’ which I sculpt over an armature of newspaper and sometimes wood.

My pieces are small-scale and almost always of the human figure. I am inspired by the anatomy of the human body; facial expressions; stance; emotion and natural human movement. I am not aiming for hyper-realism in my sculptures - I like that they are obviously made of paper - but I strive for a naturalness and a softness in the body and stance which hints at real life. I used to be inspired by classical poses, but as most of my work is made up of commissioned portraits of real people doing everyday things, I now enjoy the variety and inspiration of modern-day life

I leave some of my sculptures in the natural colour of the ‘clay’ which sometimes inspires viewers to a wide variety of interpretations of the piece which I always find fascinating. When I do apply colour to the sculpture, I use coloured tissue paper and dried coloured pigment which I rub into the dry papier maché. This gives a more natural look than using paint and avoids the sculptures looking like puppets - which I am keen to avoid.

I receive most of my commissions and other sales via social media and my website (www. debbiecourt.com), but recently I have started a YouTube channel and broadcast monthly videos where anyone can drop in to see whatever is on my workbench at that time, ask me questions and sometimes even work on a step by step sculpture alongside me. In addition, I run regular two day workshops from my home (in South Wales, UK) introducing people to the wonders of sculpting in papier maché.

My sculptures sell well in America, Australia, in many European countries and here in the UK. I am building an online following and showing more pieces in exhibitions in Welsh galleries and recently in London.

My papier maché journey continues and I am proud that my work is gaining some recognition - not only for me as an artist, but also for this wonderfully versatile but underrated art form.

The element water is essential for Claudia Drexhage´s work. Water represents purification, renewal and life.

A repetition of the same process, the duplication of a picture is practically impossible. The process of painting is far too intuitive for that.

Water, is a great necessity, without it nothing can live. Water is a cleansing, healing, psychic and loving element. It is the feeling of friendship and love that pours over us when we are with our family, friends and loved ones.

Corrections or the overpainting of unsuccessful passages are also difficult or impossible in the painting process, since the color gradients have a high transparency. Ultimately, the artwork is created in one step. It is created in the flow.

The structure of the water, the course it takes and its movement determine the appearance of Claudias Artwork in a magical way. In the process, the colors make visible what otherwise would remain unnoticed.

For Claudia Drexhage, painting is meditation: A Calm Refuge. The complete switching off of the surrounding environment and the presence in the here and now make up the act of painting for her.

Sarah Cripps

Capturing the Essence of Portraits and Landscapes in Oils

W

hat is your face saying when you’re not speaking? Do people know what you’re thinking and feeling without you telling them? I’m puzzled and fascinated by faces. And I love to capture a mood or a moment by painting them.

I use paint to explore themes of identity, internal narrative and reflection. My favourite subjects are people and animals because, with these, I can capture a moment of communication through the picture plane. I invite the viewer to consider the subject’s personal identity and what they may be feeling or thinking - what their emotional state is at that moment, building a habit of empathy.

I work mostly in oils on canvas, although ink and charcoal sketches are a big feature in my studio practice. With a Master’s degree in Victorian 10

Studies, I’ve always been fascinated by the art of the turn of the twentieth century: I love the work of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Munch and the way that oil paint’s rich colours and texture can express a mood and capture a moment. People, animals and environments are my main focus because they can communicate a feeling with immediacy.

Coming from a roundabout direction and late to an art career, I struggle with gatecrasher syndrome - like many artists - and this is also reflected in my work. For example, in my landscape with lupins painting, the flowers are actually an alien species invading the New Zealand countryside.

But my other work resonates too - people are reminded of childhood memories, or they identify with the strength of some of the women in my portraits. Being an artist can be lonely work, but these connections help me to develop my practice.

ay Nicolson, Scottish artist, obtained a BA hons in Art & Design at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen where she studied textile design.

She worked as Display Artist, Interior Designer and established her own company, producing a range of soft furnishings.

Kay moved down to Glasgow to complete her PGCE in Primary Education and has taught for the last 20 years. She continued to pursue her love of 12

Multi-Disciplinary and Interdisciplinary Artist

I

would describe myself as a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary artist in my current practice. I use various media such as sculpture, projection, moving images, photography, painting, VR, and AR. Through manipulation of image, object and perception, I strive to disorientate the viewer and their perception of what they are looking at.

The work is activated when the viewer questions the legitimacy and categorisation of an art object.

In doing so, the viewer has been subverted to question and critically asses a specific construct of our society – Art. Art is only one of the constructs of current society, and it is my tool for expression, so to speak. Many other constructs have been created to maintain peace, welfare, and economic stability. And this is where constructs seem to be dysfunctional.

Peace and welfare do not equal economic stability, yet as it seems – wealth is the only 16

Wealthy corporations and individuals worldwide are well known for tax avoidance, corruption, lack of respect for the natural world, lack of concern for welfare of the population, and lack of respect for keeping this world a safe space.

It is with this in mind that I create works that act as a form of escapism for myself while at the same time, they are expressing deep discontent with the current state of society which is being ruled by money – the worst construct of all times. Therefore, my practice lacks content as a form of protest against the maladaptive

constructs of contemporary society. It is not trying to educate, instil a riot, change the world or be commercial, yet it has the potential to do all that.

It does that by pointing out that we are all victims of this society in one way or another.

Renata Lopataite-Meliauskiene My Mission is Affordable Art for Everyone

M

y name is Renata, I am thirty five years old, and I am Lithuanian.. I arrived in the United Kingdom seven years ago and fell in with the country.

My earlier hobbies were photography and riding my motorcycle before I started my passion for painting. A few years ago, I had some health issues, and so I had to leave my job and have been unable to continue working. It has been difficult being unemployed as it has impacted on my mental health, whilst waiting for my surgery to be done it was the most difficult times for me physically and emotionally. One day at my lowest ebb, I reached the stage where I realalized, that I needed help and support by seeking professional help...

I then remembered myself as a crafty and creative person, so one day I found the strength and went to a shop selling art materials. I bought lots of 18

random colours, canvases, and it ignited the spark again within me and began painitng again.

At first I painted for myself only, until I sold one on eBay, followed by another and another sale.

Honestly I didn’t expect that someone can be interested in my artworks.

“My mission is affordable art for everyone!“ I have never studied to become an artist, so I was very happy with the sales. However, the most important thing is how it makes me feel when I am doing my painting, and I feel amazing!

In one year I have sold more than three hundred paintings. My mission is affordable art for everyone!

My favourite is Abstract and Contemporary arts.

I Spoke with my mother recently, and she told me my that my father who died when I was five years old was a painter. So maybe it was in my genes, until I unlocked it. I do hope so, as I continue

turning this hobby into something more, would love to do it as a full time job one day.

Palette Pleasers Creative and Delicious Recipes for the Artistically-Inclined

Strawberry Salad with Balsamic Vinagrette

Recipe Get ready to tantalize your taste buds with a vibrant and delicious spinach and strawberry salad drizzled with mouth-watering balsamic vinaigrette, complemented by sweet honey, cheese and crunchy almonds.

Ingredients: 1 lb. fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and sliced 5 oz. baby spinach leaves 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese 1/4 cup sliced almonds 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. honey 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper

Instructions: In a large bowl, combine the sliced strawberries, baby spinach leaves, crumbled feta cheese, and sliced almonds.

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, salt, and black pepper to make the dressing.

Drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss gently to coat.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

Piece by Piece, Vision After Vision, My Inner Jigsaw Started to Fall

E

ver since I can remember, I have been aware of a bigger picture, one that evoked a sense of well-being regardless of what life was presenting at the time.

Throughout my life, it would slowly, quietly, yet insistently, draw me inwards on a regular basis, encouraging me to look deeper, to broaden my inner horizons and to acknowledge the presence of something perennial. Soon I came to question whether this presence 22

ways of technology, I waited for it to catch up with my inner world. In 1998 it did. I started playing with photos taken on my daily walks and married them with images of the cosmos, then added sacred geometry to the mix. Piece by piece, vision after vision, my inner jigsaw started to fall into place; you might say digital art marked the beginning of turning my inner vision into reality.

It began with a doodle.

In 2005 I started playing with crayons.

Nothing fancy, just a box of crayons I found in a cupboard. The results were astounding. Soft, golden, ‘angelic’ beings emerged from out of nowhere – renditions of the perennial in me, perhaps? Watercolour and acrylic followed, each work inwardly inspired, but it was the merging of words with paint that joined all the dots and saw a life’s journey come to fruition. In September 2022, ‘Walk the Rainbow: Live the Way of Wholeness’, a colour book featuring tales of the perennial, incorporating 144 visions of reality with accompanying contemplations and guidance, was published.

For me, art is a journey. Its inspiration is as much a part of the finished piece as is the art itself. And if that journey includes the many subtle layers between thought and feeling, solid and abstract, form and formless or light and shadow, then a taste of the profound may be experienced through the eyes of the beholder.

And, if the fruit of that journey further serves as an inspiration to others, then life is enriched by perennial presence. It has vision… insight… and purpose.

Leonardo Comargo Jr. Pop Surrealism that Blurs the Lines Between Reality and Fantasy

L

eonardo Comargo Jr. is a painter who loves to tell stories.

His paintings are full of allegory and symbolism in pop surrealism style but also filled with life.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, majoring in painting, at the University of Mindanao to build his confidence and learn proper techniques to further fuel his passion. He is now an art lecturer at the same school where he graduated and the President of “PALIKATA”, an art group consisting of 24

overworked or forced. His primary source of influence is horror/weird quasiphilosophical literature which often features allegorical.

He describes his art as Pop Surrealism, where most of his subjects are anatomical psychedelic explorations about life and death, and all experiences in between bordering on the uncanny, dark, and comical. At times he communicates with kindness

and love, sharing our natural creative energy and joy with those around us, bringing the message of love, wisdom, life, and spirit. His pop art culture art allows him to cross-examine one’s self. Sometimes literal word clouds evoke frustrations and emotions and yet offer comfort through one’s faith and resilience. To him, fantasy portrayed in his oeuvres acts as a stress reliever that allows us to be entertained, take a break, relax a bit, and recharge ourselves. After all, his art is a language making him vulnerable, instinctively primitive, and essentially accessible.

Something magical happens when we allow raw honesty and pure artistic expression to come out.

Then he feels content finishing his paintings.

Leonardo Comargo defines success as doing what you love to do and pursuing your passion.

It is the journey of discovery, pure expression, maintaining momentum, and disciplining oneself.

He dreams of having an art residency abroad where he can explore and develop his creative practice. It would be a fantastic experience. His goal is to share his art with as many people as possible and continue developing his skills as an art practitioner.

incenzo Cohen (birth name Vincenzo Curcio) is an Italian classically trained painter, writer and photographer. He was born in Zurich (Switzerland), and after spending his childhood in South Italy, he moved to Rome to undertake academic studies.

Vincenzo’s production has been mainly focused on the theme of nature and related environmental issues since childhood when he suffered from the intense pain of Africa after a trip to Africa. At eleven, that first contact with African nature aroused emotions that deeply affected my existential perspective.

For this reason, he has tried to give social meaning to his work by engaging in the preservation of the environment and the fight against climate change. In painting, he has always been interested in exploring the human body and in the representation of unconscious content

that influences human expression. He once painted historical portraits inspired by myths and archetypes of ancient peoples but also subjects taken from daily life. These figures often stand out from a neutral background to focus all the attention on the subject.

They are generally depicted in hermetic expressions and twisted postures to emphasise the need for psychological introspection. In the last production, I explore the concepts of human resilience and social diversity through body expression and its capacity to adapt and resist adversity.

Painter of Landmarks of Supermarket Car Parks

I

see myself as a painter of landscapes, although I strive to avoid many associations with the tradition of landscape painting.

I don’t paint the seemingly picturesque, the bucolic countryside or the dramatic coast as, from my suburban home, I don’t live anywhere near these places.

I prefer to paint the landmarks of the Supermarket car park, the local bus stop or the disused telephone box. I paint nature, but it’s the nature of the common edgelands and 28

In my painting, I want to see my everyday experience reflected but also to find the myriad stories and histories locked in or buried in the ruins of the postindustrial landscape.

or based on criminal activity, either deliberately absent and under the radar or erased from memory or misremembered.

They take place in the ruins and edges of the post-industrial landscape and are often set at night where, under cover of darkness, views, forms and shapes shift and are obscured and take on a strangely familiar, uncanny quality. A sense of unease is created in images that suggest actions yet to occur,

often hidden behind doors and windows that act as a gateway to alternative and parallel worlds.

Shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, I have exhibited widely, including the Surface Gallery, Nottingham; The Atkinson Gallery in Somerset; Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery; Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and the New Art Gallery Walsall. I have undertaken residencies in Norway and Denmark but prefer to draw inspiration from much closer to home, either in my native Black Country or the surrounding streets where I live.

My work has been featured in Artist’s Newsletter, The Coventry Telegraph, and on BBC Radio. I have undertaken several commissions, and I have received major grants from the Arts Council England and a Longhouse Action Research Grant.

I am currently a lecturer in Fine Art in Birmingham. I was also recently seen as a contestant on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.

Everything Made by Hand From Found Objects Exploring the Theatre... Our Minds

We carry our childhood with us

y name is Robert Johnson, I am an artist and illustrator from Birmingham. I studied fine art printmaking at UCE Birmingham. Initially, my work was purely abstract, mixed media paintings combining paint, print and collage.

It wasn’t till a few years later selling my abstracts through a local gallery that I began experimenting with traditional imagery.

Inspired by many things from my childhood and teens, Hammer Horror, animation, fantasy and fairy tales. I found a connection between the way I work creating abstracts and how I create illustrative work.

The exact process begins and continues subconsciously and intuitively.

My work explores the relationship between the mind and the creation of art.

We are all coloured by our own memories, perceptions and identity. My art tries to illustrate this.

Combining all the elements, my work, whether abstract, sculpture or illustrative, explores these themes and, in a way, tries to make sense of the world, and have found viewers relate to these themes I am presenting.

For the last four years, I have created shadow boxes on similar themes from found objects.

Again they begin with no plan, move forward and are guided by the unconscious.

Recently I built a full-size shadow box in a lift shaft at the LTB gallery in Coventry titled “The Addiction to Sadness”. An exploration of depression.

Everything is made by hand from found objects exploring the theatre, our minds.

Faith Art – “The Greatest Love”

y name is Lizzie Jayne. I am a selftaught emerging artist. I love to paint wildlife, urban landscapes, skyline art, faith art, nature and cats, lots of cats!

I use mainly watercolour for my pieces on watercolour paper or canvas. I’m particularly fascinated with the Victorian and Mining era. I grew up in a mining village and remember the nostalgic smoky skylines. Some of my pieces capture this; coal miners, industrial skylines, inspired by childhood memories and my favourite artist, Lowry and Ganz.

I believe my discovery of art is a true gift from God, for I only started painting in April 2022 after receiving a box of watercolours for my 34

On His Mind As we approach Easter, we are reminded of the profound sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for all of us. Through his life and teachings, he showed us a path of love and compassion. But his ultimate sacrifice, his death on the cross, reminds us of the extent of his love and the depth of his sacrifice.

One of the most iconic images of Jesus’ crucifixion is the crown of thorns that was placed upon his head. This symbolizes the pain and suffering that Jesus endured for our sins. It is a powerful reminder of the price that was paid for our salvation.
