This month we bid a special Use Locally welcome to Middlebeck! This brings our Newark magazine to reaching over 13,000 households, every month.

As 2020 continues to challenge us in so many ways, I’m pleased to note some positive signs emerging from the business community around our region.

Many local business owners have adapted to be able to provide their products and services online and have even gone on to thrive as a result. Here at Use Locally we have worked hard to make sure our team can return to work safely, and that your magazine arrives on your doormat again. Many of you have told us how much you value the sense of continuity that our magazines provide, and for that we thank you.

Autumn is my favourite time of year and among everything else that’s been going on I’m making sure I take the time to pause and appreciate the changing season with the trees turning golden and the crisp morning air. Thankfully, no-one seems to have told Mother Nature that there’s a pandemic going on!

Whether or not we’ll have our traditional Halloween celebrations remains to be seen. And don’t forget that the clocks go back one hour on Sunday 25th October – some things never change!

Finally, phrases like “the new normal” are rapidly becoming over-used, but I recently read these wise words: Before you rush back to normal, take some time to decide what “normal” is for you, and what it is that you want to get back to.

Whatever that may be, please stay safe and stay positive.

Children’s Bereavement Centre Daisy Remembrance Campaign

The Meadow of Memories continues to grow July saw the launch of the Children’s Bereavement Centre’s Daisy Remembrance Campaign which involves asking the local community to support them by donating for a daisy in memory of their own loved ones.

By taking part you will be joining with others in remembrance as well as helping the Children’s Bereavement Centre support local 3-18-year olds who are experiencing lifechanging trauma due to the death or terminal illness of someone they love. Thousands of children and their families benefit from a range of free services, such as one to one counselling, play therapy and peer support groups. It is the only charity of its kind in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire and without support these children would be left devastated by their loss.

You can get involved in a number of ways with free downloadable ‘daisy’ ideas or by dedicating a virtual or ornamental daisy in our special “Meadow of Memories”.

Meadow of Memories – You can make a donation for your own ornamental metal Daisy which will then be included as part of the “Meadow of Memories” exhibit at an event in Newark Castle Grounds from October 23rd-25th*. It will be a special and unique event that will enable children and their families to sit alongside these special flowers for a moment of quiet reflection, remembrance and for some people the chance to say goodbye.

You will then be able to collect your Daisy for you to keep and enjoy in your own home or give to someone special as the perfect gift. To make it even more personal once you have collected your daisy the head can be removed so you can place your own message inside the stem. *The date of the event at the Castle is subject to change depending on social distancing restrictions at the time.

You can also remember your loved ones in another special way by dedicating a daisy in our online “Meadow of Memories”.

You can visit the site at any time to see our meadow grow as others join you to remember their loved ones.

“Our ‘Meadow of Memories’ Daisy Remembrance Campaign is a unique opportunity for children, young people and

their families to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of those they love and have lost. We’ve got off to a great start but still your help to raise vital funds. By getting involved, you will not only be joining together with others to remember those special people who have died but you will also help to ensure that 1000s of grieving families get the specialist support they need now and in the future by your local bereavement charity” said Kate Baxter, Children’s Bereavement Centre Chief Executive.

Brilliant Bulbs

It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now.

(YHU\ RQH XS DQG GRZQ WKH country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come.

By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had!

Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume.

Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then 22

miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display.

On special occasions you may have been sent VRPH à RZHUV DQG WKHVH are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3� (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as FURFXVHV VLPSO\ ÀOO WKHP ZLWK EXOE ÀEUH DQG WKHQ plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display.

Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year.

In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish.

An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one - makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a layer of pebbles or grit at
