I don’t have to tell you that these are unprecedented times.

There is much uncertainty about what colleges will look like in the months and years ahead. What I do know is that there are many talented and deserving community college students facing significant barriers to transfer success, including underdeveloped community college partnerships and inadequate financial aid and social support.

Phi Theta Kappa is working to not only level the field for these students, but to change it by supporting and advocating for more than 250,000 high-achieving community college students each year through programs and activities including Transfer Edge™, our annual PTK Catalyst College Transfer Fair, the Transfer Honor Roll, and PTK Connect™, our web-based transfer scholarship database featuring more than 900 transfer scholarships. As a result, Phi Theta Kappa is the only single-source resource for four-year college and university partners to attract, recruit, and retain the nation’s most promising community college transfer students.

Community College The Land of Recruitment Opportunity Use these 3 tips to diversify your campus and recruit students who are more likely to complete their degree.

Community college students are dream recruits for your college. More than half of all community college students fall into a minority population, and their work ethic and life experiences mean they’re more driven to complete a degree than first-year freshmen.

Phi Theta Kappa members are especially highachieving, with a 91.4 percent student success

rate, compared with 68.1 percent among all community college students with a 3.5 GPA in their first year of college.

Investing in transfer students will diversify your student body and attract those who are more likely to complete their degree and be leaders on your campus. Here are three things you can do now to get more transfer students on your prospect list.

1. Get on prospective students’ radar.

Start by using PTK Connect to interact with nearly 200,000 transfer-bound students and generate leads for prospects.

Enhance your profile, promote your scholarships, and place digital ads to stand out even more.

Transfer students are unique, and your communication to them should be as well. Lean in to what you know and discover about the student. Include a call to action compelling to transfer students.

Share a transfer viewbook, invite them to join you for a virtual tour, or arrange a meeting with a professor or currently enrolled transfer student.

“It starts with having a conversation with your colleagues and getting a strategy together,” said Paul Singh, Assistant Director of Transfer Admissions at Rowan University in New Jersey. “Right now, it is so essential that we use PTK smartly because that’s what we have, that’s our face-to-face, and it’s working.”

Don’t overlook the impact a personal phone call, text, or email can have. Be sure the email comes from your own account — students are more likely to open an email from an actual person. Rowan University customizes some of its outreach emails to include students’ majors and to acknowledge their PTK member status.

“The first communication to them as prospects specifically addresses their PTK involvement,” said Beth Dombkowski, an assistant director in Rowan’s admissions

office. “I try to personalize it as much as I can.Transfer students are interested in different things.”

Every touch point is an opportunity to make your database smarter and give yourself a competitive advantage. As students’ interests, majors, and career goals change, update your customer relationship management (CRM) system so you can send more relevant and timely information to them.

Pro Tip: Use conversation starters to learn more about PTK members and the Society as a whole. Do they hold an officer position? What projects and initiatives are their PTK chapter working on? The more you learn about PTK and understand our members, the stronger the affinity and the likelihood that your messaging will resonate.

2. I mprove your transferfriendliness to attract more high-yield students.

A recent National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) report shows transfer students are less likely to shop around than first-time freshmen. Although the acceptance rate is slightly lower for transfer students, 61 percent versus 66 percent, the yield is much higher, 52 percent compared with 33.7 percent.

What can your institution do to ensure more of your applicants are admissible? Are there unnecessary steps posing as barriers that could be eliminated? Ticha Chikuni, Director of Admissions at Georgetown College in Kentucky, considered these questions and others as he looked at competitors on PTK Connect and studied the qualities that bring a high transfer-friendliness rating and inclusion to PTK’s Transfer Honor Roll.

“The Transfer Honor Roll inventory opened up our eyes to see what critical resources are needed by transfer students in terms of fast degree audits, having scholarships earmarked for PTK members, and improving our offline and online marketing materials,” he said.

3. Forge strategic and creative partnerships.

Co-recruit with community college feeder campuses to showcase the strong relationship you have and the seamless pathway you’ve created. If a student has applied to your institution but could benefit from more time at their community college — or needs to stay closer to home in the short term — roll their application to the next semester or hold their place.

Students at Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY

Georgetown College now does transcript audits in one-to-two business days and accepts up to 60 degree hours. It offers generous transfer scholarships, some of which may be stacked with athletics.

Review your admission and scholarship applications, requirements, and processes to ensure they’re inclusive, and diversify your recruitment strategy to attract as many qualified students as possible. Don’t limit your scholarship award to “traditional” transfer students starting in the fall — make spring- or summer-start students eligible, too. Remove an on-campus residency requirement, and allow for both online and part-time enrollment.

Make your scholarships unlimited, automatic, and stackable, and structure them to incentivize students to complete an associate degree before transferring.

Make reverse transfer a more prominent option for community college students who do transfer before completing an associate degree so more students will count as community college completers.

Next, build partnerships with the PTK chapters at these community colleges to get facetime with even more students. You could also find an unmet need, like Alycia Parsons did. As assistant director of admissions, transfer, and non-traditional populations at Catawba College in North Carolina, she heard from many early and middle college students who wanted to go on to a four-year college. Catawba recently increased its PTK transfer scholarship to $1,000 a semester and made it available to these students.

“Catawba College thought it was a logical solution to expand our PTK scholarship to an area we were not currently serving,” she said.

“By expanding our horizons, we are able to help more students reach their goals in higher education.”

Catawba’s Stay Local Initiative gives transfer students from six nearby community colleges at least 50 percent off tuition and fees if they meet certain qualifications. A new program, Stay Local Grow Local, is an exclusive partnership with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College that offers guaranteed admission to Catawba and up to 50 percent off tuition.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget about PTK chapter advisors and Regional Coordinators. Take a more active, personalized approach by asking them what your institution could provide or do to support its local PTK chapter or region. Invest in a PTK chapter advisor list and participate in the Advisor Fair during PTK Catalyst, our annual convention, to open this dialogue.

laraMeintjes Lara Meintjes was born and raised in South Africa, where she experienced homelessness as a child and became pregnant as a teen. She immigrated to California and enrolled at Long Beach City College, where she was president of her PTK chapter, co-founded a parenting club, and testified before state legislators in support of a bill that would go on to mandate the availability of lactation facilities on all California college campuses.

In 2019, Lara was named to the All-USA Academic Team, which recognizes the top 20 community college students in the country. She also received PTK’s New Century Transfer Pathway Scholarship and the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship and is majoring in environmental studies and English at Williams College in Massachusetts.

“(PTK scholarships) allowed me to look further, to imagine myself at colleges that previously seemed too far away from where we were living or too prestigious for me,” she said. “Receiving these awards gave me the confidence to reach higher and to apply more broadly, and the scholarship money made it possible for my family to relocate to the college I eventually chose.”

Davidson Nzekwe-Daniel

Growing up in Nigeria, Davidson Nzekwe-Daniel witnessed the country’s aviation industry suffer amid a series of air disasters and was inspired to pursue aviation maintenance management at Broward College in Florida. At one time, he was the only student there who doubled as a certified airframe mechanic after passing the FAA certification tests, so he designed a preparatory course to help his fellow students to achieve the same goal. The success of his course led to the college’s Aviation Institute having the most certified student-mechanics at one time.

In 2020, Davidson was named to the AllUSA Academic Team and the All-Florida Academic Team. He also received PTK’s New Century Transfer Pathway Scholarship and Hites Transfer Scholarship. His nonprofit, the Davidson Initiative, supports students in the aviation community as well as the younger generation through STEM programs. He will transfer to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona.

“Being (named) to the All-USA Team is like a seal of approval,” he said. “The universities already know that the individual is committed to the highest level of leadership and academic accomplishments. Universities I didn’t even apply to keep sending personalized invitations to apply with several scholarship offers.”

Like many part-time community college students, Valene Hill has been working toward an associate degree two or three courses at a time for several years. She takes care of her grandmother and has health issues herself, so many of her classes at Montgomery County Community College’s Central Campus in Pennsylvania have been online. Nevertheless, she’s in the Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa and is active in her school’s Psychology Club. This fall, she’ll be a student guide for incoming freshmen.

Valene is still a few semesters away from transferring, but she’s been using PTK Connect to plan out the next steps in her journey. She will double major in criminal justice and psychology and intends to get both her master’s and doctorate. She wants to either work as a psychologist in a prison or use her degrees to help abuse survivors.

“I’ve changed my major three times, so PTK Connect has been helpful for me to see which colleges PTK is affiliated with, which also helps me make my decisions,” she said. “If I don’t see that a college is affiliated with PTK, I’m not going to apply to that college.”

IghoEkakitie

Born in Sapele, a small town in Nigeria, Igho Ekakitie came to the United States in 2017 to attend Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) in Missouri. There, he served as both a chapter and regional PTK officer, started an International Student Organization, and was a Youth Delegate to the United Nations Youth Assembly. He is serving a two-year term on the National Council for the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA).

Igho graduated from OTC in May 2020.

He used PTK Connect to narrow down his transfer options and received the full-tuition Phi Theta Kappa Distinguished Achievement Scholarship to Webster University in Missouri, where he starts in the fall of 2020 and will study international relations.

“As PTK members, we know we can get more people involved in leadership,” he said. “We can make rapid global change. We can take ambitious steps in making our schools a better place, our societies more habitable, our states safer, our nation and world more welcoming. So, why not?”
