When most recruiters think of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), they think of high-achieving community college students. What they may miss is how partnering with PTK can support their professional growth. We’ve gathered a few examples here, but the opportunities are abundant.
Support Scholars: Grow Your Skills While Giving Back
PTK administers over $2 million in scholarships annually across a variety of national programs. Behind each scholarship award is a team of volunteer readers who review applications and help identify the best of the best to advance as scholarship recipients.
As Victor Moore from Texas Tech University learned, the impact of serving goes far beyond reviewing applications. "As a former member of not only PTK, but PBK and PKP, I have been blessed to be recognized for my academic achievements. I feel being on the scholarship review team is a way to continue that idea of recognition—giving others an opportunity to move forward within their chosen fields, seeing their achievements, and celebrating with them as a silent partner.”
In a field where professional development pathways aren’t always clearly defined, experiences like this can help build transferable skills—like decision making, evaluation, and student engagement—while also enhancing your resume.
Reclassification and Promotion: Learning from the Field
Advancing within a university setting can feel like navigating a maze, but professionals like Alyssa O'Brien, Associate Director of Admissions at Hampshire College, show how intentional engagement beyond day-to-day responsibilities can open new doors.
“Working with PTK students has deepened my understanding of the diverse experiences of community college students,” Alyssa says. “High-achieving, driven PTK students often know exactly what they’d like to pursue, which pushes me to better understand our areas of study at Hampshire and the overall transfer student experience.”
Alyssa says the key is listening. “Each PTK student has a unique and powerful story that shapes their goals and dreams. By taking the time to actively listen, I can provide guidance that aligns with each student’s needs.” This approach now informs how she works with all students, including those in her first-year recruitment territory.
Attending PTK Catalyst in Kansas City connected her with students she wouldn’t typically meet in person, and sponsoring lunch for the New England Region’s annual spring conference reinforced Hampshire’s visible commitment to transfer success.
Alyssa’s story reminds us that aligning our efforts with student success metrics, building authentic relationships, and demonstrating broader impact can be strategic moves for career advancement.

When Northern Arizona University revised scholarship criteria to be more flexible about enrollment gaps, they removed a barrier for transfer students and reinforced their reputation as an adaptive, student-focused institution.

Elmira College in New York is launching an innovative financial aid model designed specifically for Phi Theta Kappa students. “We've put together an innovative combination of scholarships and grants that will help cover the costs of full-time tuition for eligible New York state PTK members pursuing their baccalaureate degree as a full-time student. Look for more information about this later in September. In the meantime, all PTK members, regardless of state or international residency, receive the EC PTK Scholarship, which is the largest academic award given to transfers at Elmira College. This and the newly created scholarship are renewed each year for students who meet the criteria.”

At Elmhurst University they understand that shifting goals and circumstances may lead students to pursue a second degree—and that it's not always financially feasible.
