Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, UIW is the largest Catholic university, and the fourth largest private university in Texas. With over 130 years of tradition, UIW is known not only for its academic excellence, but also for its diversity and personal attention.

Admission to doctoral study is restricted to applicants whose backgrounds show promise of scholarship in the field of study. Before admission to the doctoral program, an applicant must submit the following:

Evidence of an earned Master’s degree from an accredited college or university Official transcripts of all previous college work Two letters of recommendation, at least one from a professional colleague or academic advisor An official standardized score: An English Proficiency Test for international students and a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) for US citizens Other specific criteria may be required by concentrations within the Ph.D. program

The School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGS&R) - Graduate Support Center (GSC) supports graduate student services geared towards retention and persistence of graduate students towards graduation.

The GSC’s operational activities include: Academic Skill and Professional Development Workshop Programs, Graduate Writing Institute, Graduate Student and Family Orientation Programs, Community Engagement Program, and Academic Peer Mentoring Program.

Doctoral & Professional Programs

*Graduate students enrolled in a combination of graduate and undergraduate courses must enroll in at least 4 hours at the graduate level in order to receive financial aid. Students taking undergraduate coursework required as a pre-requisite for graduate school may receive federal loans under their undergraduate limits, provided undergraduate aggregate limits have not been exceeded.

Graduate and professional students should complete the FAFSA and any other documentation required by the Office of Admissions. All students awarded at UIW are packaged financial aid up to their total cost of attendance. The cost of attendance will include a budget for tuition, fees, books, room, board, transportation and personal expenses. Students may accept a portion of their aid (for example just to cover the direct costs of their tuition, fees and books). In addition, students may also accept part of their aid and make payment arrangements with the UIW Business Office for the balance.

Financial assistance is available for students enrolling in UIW graduate, doctoral and professional (optometry, pharmacy and physical therapy) programs.

College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences

The final step in the admission process is an invitation to participate in the Assessment Center for the opportunity to show further evidence of analytical writing and collaborative skills necessary for success in the program.

Doctoral Admission Procedure:

When the Office of Admissions receives the required credentials, they are then submitted to the program director for evaluation and recommendation for a decision. The Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will notify the applicant via mail regarding the action taken upon the application. Upon acceptance, the student is assigned to a program advisor.

Submit a completed formal application, which can be obtained from the Admissions office website (www.uiw.edu/admissions).

Request official transcripts from each college or university previously attended. These transcripts MUST be mailed directly to the Admissions Office from the college or university.

Submit a score report of nationally recognized entrance exams as designated by specific programs to the Office of Admissions. Students should consult with individual programs for specific entrance requirements.

Consult with the appropriate program advisor regarding additional admissions requirements.

degree designed to provide the opportunity for concerned, enlightened, globally and socially aware students to achieve the professional competencies required for entrance to the accounting profession, as well as to provide candidates the opportunity to obtain the credentials required by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy to sit for the national CPA licensing examination.

Location

The Master of Health Administration degree is a 45-hour program designed for those seeking entry and mid-level management positions within the healthcare industry.

Built on a foundation of 24 competencies critical to the success of managers, the Master of Health Administration degree will provide students with a systems perspective of the healthcare industry built upon an understanding of health and disease as well as, the economic and social factors that influence the industry.

Master of Arts in Administration (M.A.A.) The program curriculum is designed for those pursuing organizational positions of increased complexity and responsibility. The focus is on developing skills that enable students to conceptualize, analyze and solve organizational problems, with an emphasis on maintaining the highest ethical standards, and the ability to communicate persuasively toward decisions that are in the best interests of the stakeholders they serve.

Master of Arts (M.A.) The Master of Arts degree in the Dreeben School of Education requires completion of 36 semester hours, 24 of which must be in education. The degree is appropriate for students who want to take some courses in their degree outside the School of Education.

Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) The M.A.T. degree offers an opportunity for students to become certified as either secondary or elementary teachers while working toward the master’s degree.

This degree requires completion of 36-42 semester hours dependant upon the concentration. The University of the Incarnate Word is ranked highly among the Teacher Preparation Programs in Texas with a 99 percent pass rate on the TExES certification exams. All teacher education programs at UIW are approved and overseen by the State Board for Educator Certification of Texas.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) This degree is for persons who wish to do all their work in the Dreeben School of Education. The degree is awarded upon completion of at least 36 semester hours. Special programs may be arranged for practicing teachers who would like to improve their skills in elementary or secondary education.

The Dreeben School of Education is designed for persons who wish to increase academic and professional competence through graduate study. The programs ground the students both in theory and in practice.

Our mission is to support and maintain an innovative, high quality, value based education through the operation of a student centered, socially just environment that advocates exemplary education on all levels.

School of Media and Design The Communication Arts program offers a unique blend of theory-driven and experienced-based classes. Classes integrate students’ experience and knowledge with coursework to further their information base, abilities and career goals. Class content centers on the various branches of communication theories, including media ethics, aesthetics of visual design, media skills (both analog and digital), television, film, computer, web design, desktop publishing and the Internet.

Master of Arts (M.A.) The Master of Arts degree requires a minimum of 36 hours of graduate study, which includes 18 hours of communication arts core courses, 12-15 hours of elective coursework and 3-6 hours of mastery level coursework. Class content centers on the various branches of communication theories, including media ethics, aesthetics of visual design, media skills (both analog and digital), television, film, computer, web design, desktop publishing, and the Internet.

Students may choose to complete their studies with a master’s thesis comprised of COMM 63TP (thesis proposal) and COMM 63TR (thesis writing).

OR Students may choose to complete their studies with a Capstone (COMM 63TP), which is usually project-driven work.

School of Interactive Media & Design

In many cases, students learn by: Producing and writing newspaper or magazine articles, scripting film and television productions, researching and creating well-written essays and original research. Through exposure to new ideas and skills, the faculty guides students’ focus on self-discovery, growth and career direction.

Master of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies (M.A.) The Masters of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies is a generalist degree, allowing individuals to prepare for a variety of career opportunities in business, education, science, the humanities and more. The program allows students the flexibility to tailor their own degree based on personal interests and academic strengths. The degree plan is comprised of courses in up to three academic disciplines that offer graduate programs.

A degree plan must be approved and signed by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and the Program Advisors for all disciplines involved before initiating any work toward the degree.

Master of Arts in Religious Studies (M.A.) The M.A. in Religious Studies is offered through the Pastoral Institute department. This degree is designed to prepare participants to serve competently and effectively in a variety of church ministries. An integral part of the Institute is the emphasis, not only on solid scriptural and theological foundations, but also on the pastoral application of theory and research to the concrete situations of ministry and to the development of leadership roles in the church. Theological reflection, therefore, is built into each course. Opportunities for planning and participating in liturgical celebrations as well as for group discussion and sharing are incorporated into the program.

Graduates serve in a wide variety of settings including Catholic education and religious education on all levels; parish, school, organizational and diocesan program administration; parish, diocesan, campus, jail, migrant, social justice, Native-American, Hispanic, chaplaincy, liturgical and youth ministries; lay and religious formation programs; and various leadership positions.

At the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering our highest priority is preparing the citizens and scientific workers that will live in the future. We are on course toward new recognition as a premier urban school, helping UIW build a strong reputation based on the power of an excellence-based educational environment.

Master of Arts/Science in Biology (M.A./M.S.) The Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees provide a broad background in biology, including the study of molecules, organisms and ecological systems. Both degrees require 30 semester hours of graduate study, of which 6 hours may be in disciplines other than biology, and 6 may be graduate classes transferred from other institutions.

Master of Science 3 hours of Research Statistics, 3 hours of Thesis Proposal, and 3 hours of Theses Research must be included in the 30-hour requirement.

Master of Art Degree requires a comprehensive exam.

Master of Arts in Multidisciplinary Sciences (M.A.) The M.A. in Multidisciplinary Sciences is tailored to Multidisciplinary teachers of grades 6-12, helping them enhance their science skills and overall teaching capabilities. The program provides enhanced content preparation and classroom implementation using instructional technology and fundamental mathematical concepts for in-service teachers in 6-12 school science.

The Master of Arts in Mathematics with a concentration in Teaching provides students with expertise in the teaching and learning of mathematics as research in mathematics education. This degree is aimed at producing leaders in mathematics education for pre-college (grades K-12) students. The department also supports a concentration in mathematics education for the Doctor of Philosophy in Education.

School of Nursing & Health Professions

The Master of Science in Applied Statistics degree provides students with a comprehensive study of the theory and application of probability and statistics with specific emphasis in solving practical problems. Students, as part of their study program, will tutor undergraduate students of statistics and work with industry clients on actual projects. Students completing the degree will be prepared for professional careers as applied statisticians in a variety of fields, such as medicine, biology, banking,insurance, environmental science and manufacturing.

Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.)

The Master of Science in Nutrition serves employed professionals pursuing an advanced degree and those wishing registration with the American Dietetic Association, by providing students with current theory and policy and practical and research skills in nutrition.

The M.S.N. Program is designed to prepare Clinical Nurse Leaders and Adult Clinical Nurse Specialists to address the health needs of aggregates and individual patients. Students practice in both acute and community based settings.

The nursing program at UIW is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). It also holds membership in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing of the Southern Regional Education Board.

Unique features of the program include a focus on cross-cultural perspectives of health and illness, recruitment of nurses from diverse backgrounds, and preparation of specialists with population-focused skills which enable them to develop nursing programs for client groups with common health care problems.

Nutrition Services Administration Nutrition Education and Health Promotion Medical Nutrition Therapy

The Dietetic Internship Program at UIW is a highly competitve program offering a nine-month and 12-month internship for only a handful of full-time and part-time students. This intensive internship program provides the supervised practice hours necessary in the training of registered dietitians.

Master of Science in Sport Management (M.S.) The Master of Science in Sport Management is designed for people working in a variety of sports organizations. Many graduates of sports management programs work in institutions of higher education for student services where facilities are managed and physical activities such as intramurals are programmed and supervised.

Master of Science in Kinesiology (M.S.) The Kinesiology program is designed for those students who are interested in teaching physical education at the K-12 or college level, or working in a business-related area. (NOTE: this degree does not carry initial teacher certification)

The goal of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions is to provide an excellent student centered education that will promote leadership development in the respective health disciplines.

Faculty in each program are skilled practitioners who constantly strive for new ways to foster student learning and are respected in the community for their teaching, research and service.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Dreeben School of Education The Doctor of Philosophy prepares students for scholarly research and professional leadership. This multidisciplinary program provides international experience, practicums, and collaborative learning experiences both locally and globally to prepare scholar-practictioners in their field.

Concentrations:

- Higher Education This concentration prepares graduates for positions of leadership in higher education with the knowledge and capacity to understand and facilitate change in institutions of higher learning.

- International Education and Entrepreneurship This concentration enables students to develop enterprises of a cultural, educational, humanitarian, or business nature that show a full understanding of the host culture and its relation in theory and practice with Western culture.

- Organizational Leadership This concentration prepares graduates for positions of leadership in education, business, public and social agencies with the knowledge and capacity to understand organizations and to facilitate organizational change.

Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) H-E-B School of Business Administration The Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) degree program intends to create scholar-practitioners who are able to make original contributions to the advancement of business research and practice. Program objectives are to create graduates who will: develop innovative principles and practices in business operations and management; conduct original and applied research for solving problems, making decisions and communicating results; use technology efficiently and effectively to achieve organizational and professional goals; employ ethical leadership to solve domestic and global social issues; communicate appropriately in diverse environments by aligning audience, medium and message.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing The Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree provides a foundation for leadership development and refinement of clinical management skills for currently practicing APRNs. Students are expected to identify a vulnerable population of interest at the beginning of coursework. Each course will allow exploration of the population from differing perspectives and build on the students’ empirical knowledge base. The population of interest also will serve as the focus for clinical skill development. The degree program will be offered primarily in an asynchronous online format augmented by synchronous online teaching.

Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) Feik School of Pharmacy The School of Pharmacy is a 2 + 4 program of study leading to a Pharm.

D. degree for student scholars who are dedicated to impacting the health care needs of the people of South Texas and the nation. The program focuses on a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, curricular integration, provision of high-quality pharmaceutical care, lifelong learning, appropriate use of technology and opportunities for multi-cultural and multi-language development. The School promotes full emergence of the student as a practitioner and scholar, and the faculty as fine-tuned educators through community and professional service, leadership opportunities, planned development activities, and scholarship.

Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) Rosenberg School of Optometry The Doctors of Optometry (ODs) are the primary health care professionals for the eye. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures, as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.

Doctors of Optometry prescribe medications, provide low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and perform certain surgical procedures.

Optometrists counsel their patients regarding surgical and non-surgical options that meet their visual needs related to their occupations, avocations, and lifestyle.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) School of Physical Therapy The School of Phyical Therapy is committed to educating physical therapists as frontline health care professionals who are prepared to function competently and collaborate effectively with an interprofessional team in diverse global environments as confident, knowledgeable, mindful, compassionate, caring, adaptable and community-oriented practitioners who apply evidence-based decision making, lifelong learning, ethical values, legal principles, and critical, independent thinking to address patient needs and societal issues. The University of the Incarnate Word offers one of only two Doctor of Physical Therapy programs offered by a Catholic university in the southern United States.

Location San Antonio, Texas The city offers a rich mixture of cultural heritages derived from its historical settlement by persons from Germany, France, Ireland, Mexico and the Canary Islands. Together with Dallas and Houston, it is one of the three largest metropolitan areas in Texas and ranks as the seventh largest city in the nation.

San Antonio has a flourishing arts community with active theatre groups, dance companies, and music and art associations. Museums include the San Antonio Museum of Art, the McNay Art Museum, the Witte Museum, the Institute of Texan Cultures and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens.

The River Walk, or Paseo Del Rio, with its waterside restaurants, hotels, shopping areas, and cultural attractions, has helped to develop the city into a prime location for conventions and tourism. The city is home to multiple organizations and attractions including the San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio Missions, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Sea World San Antonio as well as the historic Alamo.
