Chief among them is that whether at our campuses in San Antonio or abroad, whether a current student or alumnus, or whether a parent or friend, we are all united in Mission. Together, we form an exceptional community of faith and learning. We may be many parts, but we are One Word.

In this annual report, you’ll read more about what has made UIW so exceptional throughout the year – including the opening of the School of Osteopathic Medicine, the graduation of more than 2,600 students across degree levels, the development of new strategic priorities designed to strengthen UIW as a leader in transformational education, and the start of postseason eligibility as a Division I athletic program, just to name a few points of Cardinal pride.

Dr. Thomas M. Evans was announced as the 10th president of the University of the Incarnate Word. Before a crowd of nearly 400, the UIW community welcomed Evans, who expressed his gratitude and excitement at leading this dynamic university rooted in Mission and faith. The announcement was the start of an exceptional year.
The School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) opened at Brooks and welcomed 150 future physicians that comprised its first class. Local dignitaries and members of the community came together to cut the ribbon on the $50 million state-of-theart facility. UIWSOM is the only faithbased medical school in Texas.

YEAR IN REVIEW JANUARY
FEBRUARY The Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing & Health Professions was awarded a five-year professional services contract with the City of San Antonio Head Start program to provide on-site lead screening tests. Combining the tenets of education, service and innovation, the unique program helps protect community environmental health and offers future health care providers an opportunity to work in the field.
UIW Athletics welcomed several new coaches, including new Football Head Coach Eric Morris. Morris came to UIW from Texas Tech University, where he was the football program’s offensive coordinator. Since his tenure began, Morris has led the Cardinals to significant wins in his first season.
MARCH In a community-wide celebration, UIW commemorated the inauguration of Dr. Thomas M. Evans as its 10th president. In addition, UIW’s commitment to serving current and veteran service members was recognized when it was named a Top Military Friendly Online College and a Top Yellow Ribbon Online School by the education publisher SR Education Group.

The new 122,500-square-foot Student Engagement Center (SEC) opened its doors. Featuring a three-level bookstore, dining facilities, post office, help desk, and student and administrative offices, the SEC is a central meeting place and a hub of student life. It also offers plenty of options for indoor and outdoor living and learning.
SEPTEMBER UIW’s Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing & Health Professions received a $1.9 million grant for a multi-site study focused on military women and pregnancy. The Mentors Offering Maternal Support, or MOMSTM, study will examine the efficacy of a program designed to reduce anxiety and depression and improve pregnancy and birth outcomes in military women.

More than 1,300 undergraduate, graduate, professional and doctoral students became UIW graduates during Fall Commencement. Graduates completed a total of 45,597 service hours, in the local community and internationally, providing an economic value totaling $1,100,711.
More than 9,000 guests celebrated the start of the holiday season at the all-new Light the Way Holiday Festival. One million lights illuminated trees throughout UIW’s Broadway campus and set a beautiful backdrop for fun, entertainment, food, shopping and more. Light the Way was sponsored by H-E-B and made possible by partnerships with local businesses, organizations and more than 100 volunteers from the UIW community.

The Feik School of Pharmacy received a $175,000 grant from CVS Health to create the Strategic Pipeline Development Program, a unique opportunity to recruit, develop and mentor students to study pharmacy. The five-year program will support future pharmacists to serve the Hispanic community and improve access to education and career opportunities for Hispanic pharmacy students.
The College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences welcomed author Devery S. Anderson as its inaugural lecturer in the CHASS Distinguished Speaker Series. The author of Emmett Till: The Murder that Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement, Anderson spoke to an at-capacity Concert Hall about the intersection of history, justice and civil rights, as well the impact of Till’s story in 1950s Mississippi and today.

The Rosenberg School of Optometry unveiled the new Sports and Vision Enhancement Service, one of the only vision centers in the nation that identifies and remediates visual problems that can impact student-athlete performance. Also this month, UIW conferred degrees to more than 1,300 undergraduate, graduate, professional and doctoral students at Spring Commencement. The graduates completed more 56,565 hours of community service totaling $1,396,580 in economic impact. ANNUAL REPORT | 2017-2018

VISION
IT WAS A YEAR OF NEW BEGINNINGS FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF THE INCARNATE WORD. A new School of Osteopathic Medicine, Student Engagement Center, honors, accomplishments and education opportunities made the 20172018 year an exciting one. It was also a time of new vision as UIW welcomed new president Dr. Thomas M. Evans. Throughout the year, Evans shared insights with the UIW community. Consistently seeking community thoughts and feedback, he formulated a strategic vision statement and priorities to work toward its achievement. The 2017-2018 year also provided an opportunity for reflection and a careful evaluation of strengths and areas for growth. To do just that, a Campus Planning Task Force was established and six study groups were created to examine academic infrastructure, business operations and services, campus experience, health professions, standards and processes, and safety and traffic. The Task Force is charged with maximizing effective and efficient use of resources with the goal of guaranteeing a positive living and learning environment for everyone who calls UIW home. At the heart of each endeavor are UIW students. By supporting each through graduation, UIW will help them prepare for a life of learning, purpose and dignity grounded in UIW’s core tenets of faith, service, innovation, truth and education. And, for Evans, it’s a venture the UIW community will undertake together. “We will lift the University of the Incarnate Word and allow it to become a beacon shining for the world to see all of life’s possibilities and promise of the abundance that awaits,” he said.

A PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION Evans’ inauguration was marked by a series of events, which reflected the values that set UIW apart. A community picnic brought students, staff and faculty together in friendship. Faculty from across UIW’s disciplines gathered for an academic colloquium to discuss their shared experiences and discover new ways to work together. A day of service saw the UIW community put the Mission into action through good works across San Antonio. On inauguration day, a Eucharistic Celebration presided over by the Most Reverend Gustavo García-Siller, M.Sp.S., Archbishop of San Antonio, began the ceremonies in praise and gratitude in the Chapel of the Incarnate Word. From the chapel, faculty processed to the McDermott Center where students, friends, CCVI Sisters, university presidents and special guests gathered for the presidential installation. Speakers commemorated UIW’s beginnings and the long journey to becoming the dynamic, impactful institution it is today. In his inaugural address, Evans shared that while UIW may be many parts, it is but one body, one word, united in Mission, service and values.

UIW STUDENTS STAY Offering support to help students complete their academic dreams and graduate on time is an important priority. Overall, a large percentage of first-time students continue their education the subsequent year. By 2025, UIW plans to increase the six-year graduation rate for first-time-incollege degree seeking students to 80 percent.
A GLOBAL EDUCATION To be the Word in the world requires a global understanding and an opportunity for international education. At UIW, students are encouraged to take part in high-value student experiences like mission trips and study abroad. The University helps make these enriching experiences possible through an extensive network of partner universities, called Sister Schools, and European Study Centers in Heidelberg, Germany and Strasbourg, France, where students may spend a semester living and studying. Sister schools are located on six continents. This year, the International Affairs Office established a new Sister School relationship with the University of Cairo, marking the first opportunity to study in Egypt.
A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION With a diverse student body, faculty and administrative staff, UIW has a proud tradition as a Hispanicserving institution. Since 2013, the University has annually awarded bachelor’s degrees to more Hispanic students than any other non-profit institution of higher education in the country. Today, 51 percent of UIW students are of Hispanic/Latino heritage. What’s more, UIW stands among the Texas universities awarding the highest percentage of professional degrees in the health sciences to Hispanic students. All told, UIW is the top private, non-profit university conferring degrees to Hispanic students. ANNUAL REPORT | 2017-2018

EVEN BEFORE THEY BEGIN FIRST-YEAR CLASSES, UIW STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY BEGUN TO MAKE AN IMPACT. By choosing a university founded on the principles of service and faith, they join a special community, tens of thousands of members strong, who work to make their lives and the lives of others better every day. UIW has what President Evans once called an inescapable origin story. That story began more than 130 years ago when three young Sisters arrived in Texas to heal the sick and eventually extended their care to address emerging areas of need. From those origins, the University has built a legacy of acting on faith and courage and of pioneering in search of and in service to a higher good. That legacy lives on in every member of the UIW community who embraces that spirit. Faculty educate students through transformational learning, ensuring that lessons learned in the classroom or through acts of service last long after graduation day. Alumni carry the torch forward and friends, and benefactors make it all possible. Inspired by a culture of compassion, informed by a global perspective and enlightened by their education, students are prepared to become forward-thinking leaders and compassionate professionals. They are ready to become the Word in the world.

Community service is a critical component of the UIW student experience and a core value. It’s also one of the many things that sets UIW apart. The Ettling Center for Civic Leadership & Sustainability (ECCLS) is a hub of community engagement and offers a number of ways for students and members of the community to put their talents to work for others. In the 2017-2018 academic year, 38,393 people were served or impacted by ECCLS sponsored programs.

Throughout their tenure at UIW, students put the Mission into action through their good works. Not only does this service set a foundation for a life of compassion as concerned and enlightened citizens, but it makes a real, tangible impact on the communities served. Between the Fall 2017 and the Spring 2018 graduating classes, more than 102,000 hours of community service were completed, making an impact of $2,497,291.
2,600+ GRADUATES Undergraduate, graduate, professional and other students completed part of their academic journeys with UIW in the 2017-2018 academic year. After Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 graduation ceremonies, these Cardinals became degree holders, earning undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. With UIW as their foundation, they go on to live and work purposefully as healthcare professionals, educators, business leaders, scholars and more.
ALWAYS ALUMNI Incarnate Word alumni share a special bond. Whether a graduate of Incarnate Word College or the University of the Incarnate Word, each has earned an education formed in the Mission and guided by the charism of the Sisters. “All of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word have prayed for you ever since the moment you stepped on our campus, and we will pray for you for the rest of your life,” said Sr. Teresa Maya CCVI, speaker at UIW's Spring 2018 commencement. “You are a part of our Incarnate Word family, and with that diploma you will be blessed with our prayer, no matter what comes next. … There will always be someone praying for you to have a blessed and extraordinary life.” The lives of the 40,000 UIW alumni are extraordinary because they work to bless others and continue the legacy begun so many years ago.

UIW STUDENTS ARE CHANGEMAKERS. That's why we so value the generous gifts given to us by our benefactors who help empower them to embrace their potential to improve the world. It's also why we count so many students and employees among our dedicated donors. Through initiatives like the Employee Campaign and UIW Philanthropy Ambassadors, these community members invest in students' success and in the future impact they will make on South Texas and the world. Our students' boundless capacity for good is another key reason why we have embraced our critical endeavor of doubling the endowment over the next 10 years. To begin the work, UIW received $1 million from the Impetus Foundation to establish the Carlos and MalĂş Alvarez Endowed Student Scholarship. The generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez marks the largest endowed scholarship in University history. It will provide highperforming students the resources and support to access valuable experiences such as study abroad, internships and more. Friends and donors have also helped elevate specific programs and fields of study. Physician and philanthropist Dr. Eduardo Caballero and Mrs. Irene Caballero supported the School of Osteopathic Medicine in hopes future physicians will provide much-needed care to the South Texas region. Today, a medical school building is named for him. Through her estate, former nurse and nursing educator, Col. Laura Alvarado, USAF, NC (Ret.), generously established an endowment for the Sr. Charles Marie Frank Nursing Lecture and a faculty award for nursing excellence that bears her name. Dr. A. David Mangelsdorff established an endowment in support of the Center for Veterans Affairs at UIW in 2018 through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust. This is the second time Dr. Mangelsdorff has positively impacted the University through his generosity. His first gift established an Endowed Professorship of Homeland Security in the H-E-B School of Business Administration.

COUNT ME IN Generous and Mission-minded, UIW faculty and staff members from every campus embraced the 2017 Employee Campaign call to action. For more than 30 years, this giving program has ensured that students continue to receive an exceptional level of education by funding scholarships, improving infrastructure and strengthening resources. Over six weeks in the fall, the campaign generated $166,000.
FUTURE PHILANTHROPISTS Students, too, have a heart for supporting their fellow Cardinals. UIW Philanthropy Ambassadors is a special on-campus organization that works to educate, engage and excite the student body about the importance of philanthropy. Through hands-on programs, these select undergraduates share the benefits of becoming student donors and discover how each gift sustains and lifts the University.

Kelso and his late wife Dr. Betty Stieren Kelso traveled the world collecting beautiful works of art for their private collection, and in 2015, some select pieces found a new home at UIW. collection. This year, Kelso continued to support the work he and Betty worked so lovingly to establish by donating a new piece to their namesake gallery. Of Mexican origin, the 19th century sculpture features a dark-haired Madonna with an elaborately adorned gown holding a smiling Christ child. While a beautiful addition to the gallery, the piece also furthers the Kelsos’ desire to make such works accessible to students and, as Betty said in 2015, provide “food for the soul.”
