Earth Day Film Showing, Community Invited

Jamestown, N.Y. – If you like to share your love of the natural world with others, you may be a great addition to Audubon Community Nature Center’s (ACNC) Trail Guide crew.

Trail Guides lead groups of 6 – 12 students usually ages 3 to 12 along the trails during their school field trips. They are essential to Audubon’s educational programming.

ACNC is holding a Trail Guide Training on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, 9 a.m. to noon.

In this training, you learn the basic outline of how to effectively walk

the children through the discovery process as they move along the trails. After the workshop, observing walks and applying some of the learned information is required to complete the training and give you all the skills you need.

Experience with children is helpful, but no prior knowledge is necessary to lead groups, just a positive attitude and a willingness to share your passion for nature.

Established Trail Guides are welcome to come for a refresher course.

Training takes place

both indoors and out, so plan to come dressed for the weather.

Bring a lunch if you would like to stay for the optional 1 – 3 p.m. natural history walk.

Reservations for the training are appreciated and can be made by calling (716) 569-2345 during business hours or clicking through “Programs and Events” at AudubonCNC.org. Walk-ins are welcome.

If you are interested in becoming a trail guide and want to learn more before registering, call Audubon Education Coordinator

The three-story Nature Center building houses interactive displays, a collection of live animals including the Hellbender exhibit, the 2022 Nature Photography Contest winners, and the Blue Heron Gift Shop. Visitors are welcome Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sundays, 1 - 4:30 p.m. Nature Center members and SNAP/EBT cardholders have free building admission daily. Building admission is also free every Sunday for nonNature Center members.

To learn more about Audubon and its many programs, call (716) 569-2345, find Audubon Community Nature Center on Facebook, or visit AudubonCNC.org.

Audubon Community Nature Center builds and nurtures connections between people and nature by providing positive outdoor experiences, opportunities to learn about and understand the natural world, and knowledge to act in environmentally responsible ways.

The Green Sanctuary Team of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northern Chautauqua (UUCNC) will host an Earth Day film showing on Saturday, April 22, at 7 PM at the UUCNC meetinghouse, located at 222 Temple St. in Fredonia. The three short films, “Current Revolution” (total running time 72 minutes) illustrate the possibility of a just transition to a clean energy economy where the well-being of workers and frontline community members is valued.

“Current Revolution”, from the American Resilience Project, explores the transition from fossil fuels to renewables with a focus on national security, economic prosperity, and environmental justice. These films show how the nation can embrace smart policies and investments that support grid modernization through distributed renewable energy generation and ensure that the transition is just and sustainable.

Black Belt Advancement Ceremony at Family Martial Arts Center

On Wednesday April 12, 2023, Sensei Jacob Overstreet advanced to his Shodan black belt through the Fudozen Shorinji Kempo Karate organization. Officiated by Master Dan Kreitzbender.\ Sensei Overstreet has been a member of The Family Martial Arts Center since 2018. As a role model and inspiration to many, he has proven to assist with bright futures in Students.

He has been involved in all our outreach programs to help families and he participated in several of our demonstrations. His progression has been exciting and adventurous. The training consists of mental and physical endurance and challenges. One may think the Martial Arts is all physical. Incorrect. Most training is mental. Reading ones body movements, telegraphing

body placements, awareness of surroundings, confidence to make a wise choice, socializing with groups, being able to teach their own individual knowledge to Students with precise accuracy, becoming a role model, using the skills learned in other life obstacles and skills (sports and activities) and to persevere as a young adult. Sensei Overstreet’s training consisted in punches, kicks, ground defense and offense, balance in the mind and body, grappling, weapons training, and many other aspects

of defense. Sensei Overstreet has been active for over 5 years in the Kempo Martial Arts and will be a great asset to the organization. Sensei Jacob Overstreet is the Son of Sherri Overstreet of Brocton NY. Sensei Overstreet is a true dedicated young man with a heart of gold. He adores his little sister and cherishes his girlfriend Faith. Several of our black belts attended the ceremony along with several students in the organization.

LINDSEY CRISANTI, 4-H PROGRAM LEAD EDUCATOR

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (April 13, 2023)

-- Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program held a show for youth in the rabbit project on Saturday, March 25th, 2023, at the Maple Springs Fire Hall in Bemus Point. The show was organized by volunteers on the 4-H Rabbit Project Advisory Committee. In addition to the breed show, youth had the opportunity to partake in showmanship events to expand their

rabbit handling skills and overall knowledge of the species. We had 26 youth and a total of 49 rabbits in attendance. Karen Fischer judged the breed show. Fresh Air or Lead Dust?

Girl Scout Troop Donates Cookie Baskets

The Chautauqua

is urging people to protect children from the hazard of lead paint

MAYVILLE, N.Y.:- You may be anxious to open the windows and get some fresh spring air, but before you do, Chautauqua County Health Department’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Team suggests using caution.

“Opening and closing old windows can create nearly invisible lead paint dust” explains Lead and Healthy Homes Program Coordinator Anna Powell, “and it takes just a tiny bit of this dust to potentially poison a young child.”

In a typical year, about 80-85 children in Chautauqua County test positive for unsafe levels of lead in their bloodstream. Old windows are one of the most common places kids are exposed to lead.

“It’s so common to see toddlers pulling themselves up by a windowsill, or playing on the floor near windows. They get lead-contaminated dust on their hands and toys, put hands or toys in their mouths, and that’s all it takes to raise their blood lead levels,” explains Powell.

Exposure to even tiny amounts of lead in early childhood can result in loss of IQ points, learning difficulties,

and behavior issues. At higher levels, these issues can be more severe, and a child may be physically ill as well. Extreme exposure can result in coma or even death. Damage caused by lead is considered to be irreversible.

Doors, stairs, and porches – considered friction surfaces - are other common sources of exposure to lead dust in area homes. Lead paint was not banned for residential use until 1978, meaning that many homes in the County may be at risk.

“Many people’s first instinct is to start sweeping or vacuuming, but that can spread lead dust further around the home,” says Ms. Powell.

“We recommend a wet-wiping method for cleaning lead paint dust. Use wet paper towels to

pat down the area, which will pick up the lead-contaminated dust. Dispose of the paper towels as you work – don’t try to re-use them.”

Chautauqua County Health Department Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program will check any home free of charge in the County for lead where a child under age six spends at least 6 hours per week. The program provides free cleaning supplies and the training and materials to eliminate or control lead paint risks. There may also be grant programs to assist property owners with necessary repairs. Call 716-753-4489 for more information or to schedule a lead risk assessment.

To conclude their successful cookie season, Girl Scout Troop #20237 recently delivered cookie baskets with homemade thank you cards to the staff of the Dunkirk Public Library, the Dunkirk Police Department and all 3 city fire stations. The girls wanted to thank the library for letting them hold their meetings there and the police and fire fighters for all they do for the community. At their cookie booths, the girls saved all tips they received and used them to purchase the boxes to be donated. At a recent meeting they unanimously decided to acknowledge these organizations and personally delivered them, along with their troop leaders.
