TCM has a memorable “Sweet Smell”
One of the most superbly vicious films yet made, “Sweet Smell of Success” will have special significance when Turner Classic Movies shows it Saturday, May 10. It’ll be the bottom half of a two-for-one double feature chosen by guest host Jamie Lee Curtis – whose father, Tony Curtis, had one of his most atypical and memorable roles in the 1957 drama. He plays Sidney Falco, a press agent desperate to get his clients mentioned by powerful New York columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster), who’s very aware of the influence he wields and very willing to use it to his personal benefit. That includes his intended manipulation of Falco into breaking up the romance between Hunsecker’s sister (Susan Harrison) and a jazz musician (later “Route 66” and “Adam-12” star Martin Milner). James Wong Howe’s stark black-and-white cinematography and the razor-sharp dialogue (in part by co-screenwriter Ernest Lehman, adapting his own magazine story) also do much for the film, which is as unsettling as it is unforgettable.
“Copycat” (Hulu, streaming): While their teaming helps to make this 1995 melodrama fascinating, Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter also make fascinating moves with their characters individually, Weaver plays an agoraphobic criminology expert who’s threatened by a serial killer, which gets her sought out by a spunky police detective (Hunter) and the latter’s partner (Dermot Mulroney). The tension continues to build as Weaver’s alter ego comes to
