Their relationship also draws out the insecurities of others as Millie must deal with being ignored in favor of her sister once again. Rosemary’s act of independence comes crumbling down as she lashes out against Hal for dancing with Madge. The schoolteacher realizes she is growing older and begs her boyfriend Howard Bevans, played by Reggie Elzey and Thomas Mugglestone, to marry her in fear of dying alone. As the play draws to a close, Hal and Madge run away to be together and Flo is left standing in the yard to realize that children need to live their own lives and make their own mistakes. Inge’s powerful human message resonates deeply with the audience as they watch the drama play out on stage. Each character is highly relatable and has their own story full of hidden dreams and despair. The production’s themes move everyone as they touch upon people’s need for acceptance and finding who they are. The cast captures these characters and emotions well and present them in a way that captivates the audience and leaves them evaluating their own lives. Through the work of the director, Bryant Hoex, and the stage manager, Jennifer Strasser, the plays comes together beautifully. The efforts of the cast and crew are clearly evident by their fantastic production and are rewarded by the audience’s fervent applause by the show’s end. Although the play shows that life may be no picnic, the drama department sure makes it look easy. line rush!” said Junior Caroline Nolan. “We are all a really awesome group of kids!” Running for the cross-country team is a great experience for runners because they are like a family. “I’m a freshman and I really like the family atmosphere on the the team,” said Anders Colwell. “Cross country to me means to run as a family and being dedicated, devoted and earnest to cross country in pursuit of the improvement of myself and the team,” added cross country member Garrett Garcia. “Bonding with your group, getting to know each other, and getting better as a team is great.” Team chemistry contributes to the runners’ success because they know that the team has their backs on and off the trails. Some goals that the cross-country team hope to accomplish this season are for the Girls Frosh to improve from last year’s team at state championships and for boys to qualify for state championships at Woodward Park, Fresno on November 24. The team hopes to extend their season by having some of their runners qualify for NCS, and break their personal times and school records. The team is proud to represent Dubiln High School and they run with passion and are confident that they can go all the way in their season.

Hurricane Sandy Razes By Danielle Boccio

ABOVE: Picture taken of Sandy off the coast of New Jersey from the International Space Station. Credit: NASA On Monday October 29, 2012 an unusually strong storm hit the eastern coast of the United states. Tropical storm “Sandy” made its way up from Haiti and the Caribbean, through the US to Canada. Winds with speeds as high as 89 mph were recorded when Hurricane Sandy moved through New Jersey. There was as much as 9.5 inches of rainfall in West Cape May, NJ, overall rainfall ranged from 9.5 to 3.2 inches throughout New England. The super storm killed more than 90 people in the United States, 2 in Canada and 69 in the Caribbean. As of Thursday November 1, there are 4 million homes and businesses without power. At the peak, there were 8.5 million without power. The storm affected the following 19 states: along the coast with rains, high winds, flooding resulting in down power lines, many injuries and deaths Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. There is an estimated $30 to $50 Billion in economic losses for the U.S. not to mention the property damage and the business losses. If the Damages reach $50 billion Sandy will be the second

costliest U.S. storm, right behind Katrina. According to the department of energy Sandy knocked out power to more houses and business than any other storm in U.S history. In an effort to keep people off the streets the New York subway system is allowing passengers to ride for free for the next couple of days. In addition, cars entering Manhattan are required to have at least 3 passengers. Even with this restriction, traffic delays were often unbearably long. Nearly 20,000 flights going to and from the coast have been cancelled since the Sunday before Sandy hit. Airlines are estimated to have lost between $700 million and $1 billion. Damages are still being assessed and aid is being sent to those in desperate need. No one knows how long it will take to clean up the wreckage and restore power. “All the petty differences that consume us in normal times somehow melt away,” President Obama told 4,500 Nevadans at a rally in Las Vegas. “There are no Democrats or Republicans during a storm, just fellow Americans, leaders of different parties working to fix what’s broken, neighbors helping neighbors cope with tragedy, communities rallying to rebuild, a spirit that says, In the end we’re all in this together, that we rise or fall as one nation.”

Fighting Breast Cancer By Winnie Chan

Over the course of a lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Worldwide, breast cancer accounts for 22.9% of all cancers in women. In honor of those with breast cancer, the month of October has been titled Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) or National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). This is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds to research its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. In the Dublin community, there are a few programs established to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Safeway Foundation is one of such programs that dedicates October to raise money to find a cure for this disease. “The sense of personal satisfaction and reward that comes from helping a neighbor in need is incredible,” says a Safeway volunteer. Safeway is offering three ways to donate in stores. One can purchase the limited-edition bag for $2.99, with $2 from the sale of each bag benefiting breast cancer research. One can also purchase $30 worth of products that have pink price tags, with $5 being donated to research. Or one can simply donate any amount they would like to at the register.

Hebert At Dublin High, there is an American Cancer Society, or the DHS ACS, in which a portion is dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Treasurer Josephine Tseng from ACS talks about the club’s ways of raising money for this cause. “Our club isn’t dedicated specifically to breast cancer, but cancer in general,” Tseng says. “We spread awareness by having monthly bake sales at school to gather money that we will later send to various cancer research foundations at the end of the year.” Dublin DECA dedicates October to breast cancer awareness. Japna Kalra from DECA gives her side of the story about working with this organization.

“From the Homecoming Carnival to Halloween, we have had several awareness campaigns,” Kalra says. “I have been involved in selling pink drinks and sweets at the Homecoming Carnival, collecting donations at the Homecoming Carnival, and selling tickets for the VIP Raffle.” Also, as Vice President of Graphic Arts, Kalra says she designed the flyers and coupons for the “Get Caught Wearing Pink” event, in which people wearing pink received Munchie Mart coupons from October 29th to 31st. “I am really proud of the awareness and money Dublin DECA has raised to fight breast cancer, and am glad I could be a part of the difference,” Kalra concludes.

Healthy Tips for Flu Season By Zach Calhoun

As November comes around, we think of Thanksgiving, the change of colors in the trees and early Christmas shopping. There’s also another thing that is included in that package of amazing events; Cold and Flu season. The sicknesses that spreads rapidly through schools, workplaces etc. It is everyone’s worst nightmare to get sick. But, if you take sanitization seriously, chances are you won’t get sick. Some people believe that you can only get sick by kissing a sick person, or anything else like that. But that isn’t true. These diseases can spread as easily as shaking someones hand, touching a rail on the staircase to opening a door, etc. You can get a flu shot at your local grocery store, doctor office or anywhere else that says they do it. It’s not guaranteed to work, but it could give you an extra protection against that disease. “During November, it is mostly Cold/Flu season. I recommend for students to wash their hands constantly, not share food and drinks with each other, and to cover their cough. And if students are feeling sick the morning of school, it would be best to stay home so they don’t spread it around to others,” said Christi Slofkosky, the

health nurse. Also, dressing appropriately for the weather is a good way to keep from getting sick, so layer up on the sweaters and Uggs for the cold rainy days. Just taking these simple steps can prevent you from getting sick! So next time your friend asks if they can have a sip of your drink, or a bite of your food, just remember if you let them, you have a greater chance of getting sick! So don’t do it! “I try to eat a lot of healthy foods, get flu shots, dress warm, get plenty of sleep and exercise,” said Justin Choi. Hayley Anklam has other precautionary measures to staying healthy. “I wash my hands a lot, take airborne everyday, don’t touch my face with my hands, don’t go out in the rain, and obviously stay away from people that are or look sick,” she says. Lastly, if you’re in a relationship, you may be more at risk than others because both of you have a greater chance of getting sick. “Just don’t kiss people, and wash your hands, and take a lot of showers.” says Collin Wellman. So, with all these tips, be sure to follow them and you will most likely not get sick!

ABOVE:San Francisco Giants celebrate their win against the Detroit Tigers. Credit: Leon Halip, Getty Images The Giants won their second World Series championship in three years, and San Francisco celebrated after closer Sergio Romo recorded the final out striking out Triple-Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. Barry Zito and Justin Verlander were scheduled to start Game One of the World Series, and critics felt that Verlander had the edge over Zito. However, Zito proved the doubtful wrong and outshined the hard-throwing Tigers ace. All eyes were on third baseman Pablo Sandoval as he made history hitting three home runs in a single World Series game, two off Verlander. “I went crazy and ran around my house after Pablo Sandoval hit his third homerun,” senior Tristan Elias said. “I thought Sandoval’s home runs were amazing! I remember watching it happen and I was just in awe of disbelief...the Giants are always surprising me,” senior Mandi Neumann said. Game Two was Madison Bumgarner against Doug Fister. There was a scary moment when Fister was hit on the head by Gi-

ants left fielder Gregor Blanco’s line drive, but Fister was stable enough to pitch. The Giants were limited to two runs, but it was enough to get a victory over the Tigers, who were shut out. The same can be said for the Giants in Game Three when Ryan Vogelsong and Anibal Sanchez pitched for their teams, thanks to teamwork and not giving up until the last out. “I don’t think just one person clutched, I think it was a team accomplishment,” junior Kyle Winter said. “That’s why I like the Giants so much, they stick together through thick and thin, there’s no outsiders.” Game Four was the showdown of Matt Cain and Max Scherzer. Both Cain and Scherzer did not disappoint their teams, and it was the battle of the bullpens as they went into extra innings. The Tigers’ hopes were crushed as second baseman Marco Scutaro hit an RBI single off Tigers reliever Phil Coke, scoring DH Ryan Theriot from second base in the 10th inning and diminishing a 3-3 tie to give the Giants the lead for good. “It was so nerve wracking having

the game go to extra innings, but it just made it that much more exciting when they won for the sweep,” Elias said. “The Giants pitchers were amazing, showing that the Giants definitely have the best pitching of any team.” Romo was called from the bullpen to close the door on the Tigers, displaying his success of throwing three-and-out in the three games he was called to the mound in the World Series. Romo’s presence was a significant factor in finishing off the Tigers. “My favorite part in the World Series--besides us winning-- was when I thought the Tigers would win Game Four; the Giants pulled through and won the game and the series,” Neumann said. The team has overcome obstacles, such as losing their hottest offensive bat in Melky Cabrera to a drug suspension and their strongest pitcher in the bullpen, closer Brian Wilson to Tommy John surgery. However, the San Francisco Giants have proven that they can deal with adversity and contributions from crucial players like Sandoval, Scutaro and Romo to win the 2012 World Series.

Credit: Pete Souza for the White House Tuesday, November 6, 2012 marked a day that will go down in United State’s history as election day proved to be a full of unprecedented progress. Incumbent president Barack Obama beat Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to win a second term. Obama won 332 electoral votes, far surpassing Romney’s 206 votes and the 270 votes required to take the White House. Obama also won the popular vote, obtaining 51% of the 121,179,424 votes cast by American citizens. Election day was not solely to determine the next American president as citizens voted in congressional and gubernatorial races, as well as for countless ballot measures. Women made huge strides in politics as the 113th Congress with have more female members than ever elected in U.S. history. The Senate now has a record-setting 20 women and the House of Representatives has 76 women. Racial barriers were broken as

Mazie Hirono will be the first Japanese-born, Buddhist Asian-American female Senator, representing Hawaii. Tulsi Gabbard, representing Hawaii’s 2nd district in the House of Representatives, will be the first Hindu member and one of the first female combat veterans. Mark Takano was elected to the House of Representatives from California’s 51st congressional district, becoming the first nonwhite openly gay congressman. Kyrsten Sinema is the first openly bisexual member of Congress, representing Arizona’s 9th congressional district. This year’s Congress has the largest LGBT delegation in history. Maine residents approved Question 1, becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage by a popular vote. Maryland’s Question 6 legalizes same-sex marriage and Washington’s Referendum 74 upholds a February 2012 bill that legalizes same-sex marriage. Minnesota rejected Amendment 1, which proposed banning marriage equality.

Immigration laws were also addressed in other states. Maryland passed Question 4, an act that allows children of undocumented immigrants attend state colleges. Doing what California could not in 2010, both Colorado and Washington passed ballot measures that would legalize and regulate the sale of small quantities of marijuana to residents 21 and older for recreational use. California rejected Proposition 32, which would have prevented labor unions from using funds to pay for political activities. Proposition 30 was passed, increasing income and sales tax to fund education and public safety. Californians approved Proposition 35, which creates higher penalties on human trafficking. Proposition 36 was passed, revising the three strikes law to only inflict life sentence on serious or violent felonies. Proposition 39 was approved, creating revenue to spend on clean, energy efficient jobs.

What’s Up With Fall Clothes at DHS? By Brittany Roberts

Okay DHS, fashion is a big part of most people’s lives. There are also a lot of fashionistas out there and it’s time to give you inside scoop on the latest style. Tips on the newest clothes, what to wear and how to wear them. The Fall Edition! Time for the do’s and don’ts of fashion. DO: Feel okay with mixing up styles and patterns. Be okay with mix-matching and not always color coding. Style is looking creative and new every single day with unique vibrant colors or warm eccentric shades. DON’T: Get stuck in the phrase “hipster”. Hipster is definitely a lifestyle, not just a certain type of way you dress. Plus that can also make you look as if you’re bandwagoning off other people’s styles. It’s so much better to feel comfortable in your own clothes and have your own individuality rather than copying off others. The actual definition of fashion is the prevailing custom of style or dress. It’s best to find something that makes you happy with the way you look. After doing lots of research, it shows that women take much more of an interest in fashion and the way they look compared to guys. However, making a fashion statement with what you wear can be good or it can be bad. It’s good because you’re showing off your sense of style and individuality or it can be bad when you overdo it, or have an inappropriate or negative sense of style

On September 21, 2012, millions of people lined up at the doors of Apple stores for something that weighed a total of only 3.95 ounces. They were waiting for the iPhone 5: the thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever. The iPhone 5 has a new, sleek design. It has a solid sheet of Gorilla Glass on the front and smooth aluminum on the back; a feature that some students find appealing. “I like how the screen doesn’t break as easily and the design of the phone looks better,” said Junior Tai Ahmed about his new iPhone. The new iPhone comes in both black and white and has the same basic shape of the iPhone 4S. However, the iPhone 5 stands 4.87 inches tall and has a 4-inch screen. “The longer screen is pretty cool. Like at first it seems awkwardly long, but after awhile you get used to it,” said Junior iPhone 5 owner, Caitlin Benoit. The iPhone 5 is super light, though some people even say it is too light. Compared to the 4S, it is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner. Another enhanced feature is the camera. The 8-megapixel camera takes better quality and higher resolution pictures. The surface of the camera may look like glass, but it is actually not. It is actually sapphire crystal, which means the

surface of the lens is less likely to crack. The camera also allows you to take high quality panorama pictures without the use of a purchased app. The new package comes with a new style of headphones. Unlike the old circular shaped headphones, the new ones are designed to fit the anatomy of the ear. The Apple team did 124 tests on 600 people to make sure the headphones stayed in while exercising and doing everyday activities. “The new headphones are awesome and way better than the ones before,” said Benoit. Some iPhone 5 users have been complaining about various things. Some say there is a purplish tint in their photos. Apple responded to this by saying the users are holding their phones wrong or at a bad angle. Many users are also upset with the new maps. They say it is slow, misplaces locations, and has poor graphics. This has caused many people to turn to Apple’s biggest enemy, Google Maps. The iPhone 5 is becoming number one on everybody’s Christmas list this year. “I want one so badly. I am trying to ‘accidentally’ break my current phone so I can get the cool, new iPhone 5,” said Junior Jon Rompel.

Credit: Liam Bird Teens spend their weekend nights at the movies or out with friends, but do they ever wonder what teachers do outside of the classroom? Fellow Dublin High staff members Ron Rubio and Noel Sollom-Brotherton let us take a glimpse into their life. Usually, the stereotypical image for teachers is that they are at home grading work or doing something boring, but not the teachers at Dublin High. They go out and experience the world as any other person would. Ron Rubio is probably the most interesting and involved person when it comes to his lectures. He captivates all of the attention as he explores the world’s past with a vibrant attitude towards his lessons. Even though he has three kids and a wife, he still manages to have time to do the things that sparks his interest. In his free time, he loves to watch football

games and take hikes and on good days, the kids join him. He may be seem like a strict teacher who likes organization, but as a proud Spanish and Italian, his passion for cooking and food really inspires him to be flexible in the kitchen. “One time I had to bribe the kids with pizza to get them to come with me and the dogs for a walk,” Rubio chuckles. “But as for the meals in the house, I do all of the cooking and I also do all of the grocery shopping for the family.” Noel Sollom-Brotherton on the other hand, is completely different. His passion for literature and art inspires his students to put down the remote and pick up a book. As a Dublin High School swim coach, a lot of his time is spent working with student athletes but during off season he likes to read several books at once, and go to sport related events with his friends.

In his younger years he partook in BMX riding and it can be quite an adrenaline rush. Sol-Bro, the nickname given by his students, recently bought a house and is busy spending his time remodeling while also going to San Francisco to go to art museums. “It’s kind of an older house so I’m remodeling and working on it, power tools and everything,” says Sollom-Brotherton. “I go to art museums a lot, so I take trips to the city and go to ones like MOMA and De Young.” Both of these fine men try not to take home any work over the weekend to grade, they like to work hard during the weekdays to get it done so they can have a laid back weekend. “I really try hard not to do school work on the weekend but it doesn’t always happen” Mr. Sollom-Brotherton Says.

What Does Thanksgiving Mean for You? By Lauren Flint

ABOVE: A family sits down ready to feast. Credit: seniorservices. Thanksgiving is always associated with turkeys, giving thanks, and lots and lots of food. Eating a turkey on Thanksgiving is a tradition that leads back to colonial times when colonists wanted to find an affordable way to feed a lot of people in celebration of the successful harvest. Giving thanks also comes from the colonists and how they were thankful for the harvest and the Native Americans for saving them. People still give thanks for har-

vest, but it has also been modified and people often use Thanksgiving as a day to remember all the other things they are thankful for. “Each year on Thanksgiving my family and I sit around the table and go around and say all that we have to be thankful for,” senior Adrianna Nugen shares. “It is a good tradition because sometimes we forget all of the little things we have, like family and great food!” she adds. Another common Thanksgiving tradition in the United States is

football. This began in 1876 when the first intercollegiate football championship game was held on Thanksgiving day. Some families gather to watch the game, while others have their own football fun! “I get a bunch of my friends and family together each year on Thanksgiving morning and we play a few games of football,” says Junior Jordan Garcia. “I look forward to it every year because it is a cool way to bring the family together on such a fun holiday.” A smaller tradition is to break the wishbone from the turkey. It is known as the “lucky break” a tradition of pulling apart the bone and trying to win the larger piece and the “wish” that goes along with it leads back to when the Romans brought the tradition with them when they conquered England. The English colonists carried the tradition on to America. These are common traditions that many Americans take part in. Each family has their own original traditions too. “In my family it is a huge tradition to all get together the morning of thanksgiving and prepare all of the desserts together,” says Senior Cassandra Chan. Baking is a big part of the holidays and even if you are not into baking, you can get in the spirit by enjoying all of the holiday goodies! Little, fun traditions that families have are special because even if they are just for fun, they can really get people in the mood for the holidays. What traditions are in your family? Enjoy this Thanksgiving and create some new traditions of your own!

Too Much On Your Plate? By Michelle Goldstein

ABOVE: Senior Patricia Schaefer suffering from a food coma. Credit: Michelle Goldstein Are you feeling full from Thanksgiving? Is your stomach screaming out, “Help me, you ate too much?” Well you have now experienced a food coma. A food coma is caused by eating too much at Thanksgiving dinner. Food may be delicious, especially on Thanksgiving, but you have to remember to stay healthy and control your appetite. You can take special medication for curing a food coma. The medicine is called Sleep. Sleep can energize your stomach and make it a happy tummy again. A food coma may sound scary, but fear not! Sleep is there for you by letting you digest all the food you inhaled for Thanksgiving. “Eat slower so you don’t overstuff yourself! Stay somewhat active, like cleaning up or just don’t eat so much!” said Senior cooking enthusiast Marcos Castro. It’s no mystery as to why people just plop on the couch and pass out from eating too much, but there are tips to avoid a disastrous food coma. Don’t get so much food that you won’t be able to finish and take little bites. It takes 20

minutes for the brain to realize you are full. Eat healthy portions rather than overindulging on turkey and other Thanksgiving dishes. If you are starting to eat too much, you should say to yourself, “Slow down champ!” and relax. You should maybe take a nap and save some food for later to eat as leftovers. “Don’t eat so much and get some exercise! Do the turkey trot,” suggested Mrs. Lawson and Mrs. Slavec. It is time to feel the burn! Stretch and make sure you don’t hurt yourself. Exercise can do wonders, if you are trying to lose weight you can’t give up on your goal even if you are getting hungry. Get your body moving and get a rhythm going so you can restore your health. A Thanksgiving feast may make you think about food all day, but remember to eat smaller portions slowly and say to yourself, “I can save this delicious turkey for tomorrow.” So you don’t overeat and ruin your day by not feeling good. Remember, you don’t want to end up as stuffed as the turkey you just ate.

Black Friday Madness ABOVE: Beat the lines with online shopping. Credit: Gettyimages Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year. It’s the Monday right after Black Friday. This year it lands on, November 26th. Generally most of the major online stores will lower their prices just like department stores did for Black Friday. Think of it as Black Friday, just online. Cyber Monday is the beginning of the Holiday season for web sales. Some well known stores, like Target and WalMart even get into cyber monday and lower their online prices but keep their store prices the same. Even online stores like Amazon that carry thousands of other brand’s merchandise participate in Cyber Monday sales. Some like Amazon and others have hourly specials and sales that last until the item is sold out. Opposed to Black Friday, you don’t have to wake up before dawn to go beat the lines at the Mall then battle the traffic trying to come home with five big shopping bags completely filled. Simply pull up the store’s website at the comfort of your own home and save the same amount, you may have to wait several days to

get the things you bought shipped to you, but what harm is a little waiting when you are getting such a great deal. Shipping may also cost a little extra. But participating in Cyber Monday is a great way to get all your holiday shopping done quickly and easily. Consumer electronics make up the majority of online purchases during the Holiday shopping season. It’s reported that consumers spent over 1 billion dollars online on Cyber Monday last year. Overall the online retail spending for the 2011 Holiday season reached over $37 billion. Cyber Monday has steadily been getting more popular over the years as people become more technologically savvy and more retailers are selling online. With the growth of online sales you need to be careful and stick with retailers you know, credit card and Identity theft are common online issues. So, instead of spending countless hours trying to beat the crowds to get all your Holiday shopping done; try online shopping on cyber Monday to save as much as you can.

It’s hard to imagine anyone enjoying waiting in line in the middle of the night, but shoppers love what they do, and on Black Friday, anything is worth it. Time to Get on the Court By Alison Martinez

ABOVE: The Sports Complex is consdered the players’ second home and comfort zone. Credit: Stacia Schober Hey basketball fans, it’s time to be the sixth man and invade the Sports Complex because basketball’s now approaching Dublin High! Basketball season is right around the corner, with practice starting on November 5th. While the fall sports are wrapping up their seasons, current Dublin High basketball players are highly motivated to win games and go far in their seasons with goals to dominate DFAL and clinch spots in NCS playoffs. There are five teams in this upcoming 2012-2013 season: Boys Varsity, Girls Varsity, Boys JV, Girls JV, and Boys Freshmen. The foundation of the basketball program is represented by both varsity teams, boys headed by

Coach Costello and girls headed by Coach Wainwright. “We have 12 returners from last season and we have all the talent to make a run. I’m looking forward to a great year,” senior Devin Koeplin said. “Basketball is the game I’ve loved since I was in kindergarten, and I’m excited to play my senior year with the guys I grew up with.” The players choose to play for the basketball program to get recruited for an athlete scholarship, but some enjoy the sport to stay in shape or for the feeling they get when they play. “I like playing because I’m very competitive and it’s a lot of fun,” varsity captain Alaine Tross said.

“My adrenaline is pumping whenever I step onto the court,” varsity captain Stacia Schober said. The players skip out on late Friday nights to practice with their teams and they cannot sleep in because practice is early on Saturday mornings. For some players, it is a preferable sacrifice because they love the game of basketball and their teams are considered like their second family. “Teammates are there for each other even after the noise of the crowd is gone,” Tross said. To be on a Dublin High basketball team means commitment, hard work and determination. All five teams practice six days a week for two to three hours each day, even during the Thanksgivingand Winter breaks. The players’ lives consist of eating, sleeping and playing basketball, as well as bonding with teammates. “Team chemistry is very important to play well in games,” Schober said. During the games, it seems like the teams make few errors against their opponents. But it’s more than just practicing plays and skills. The teams have to develop team chemistry for their game plans to flow properly. The biggest portion of the season is the DFAL, which is the school league. League games are crucial for qualifying into NCS, the North Coast Section playoffs for Northern California teams and the teams are categorized by division. It consists of playing 12 games against Dougherty Valley, our known rivals, and other DFAL teams. The Dublin High basketball program is ready for the challenges that will be presented to them this season. Teams are defined by their fan base, so let’s reunite together as a school to support our basketball teams!

Ready, Set, Hike! By Zach Calhoun

Soccer is a very important sport at Dublin High School. Our Lady Gaels Soccer team participates in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League (DFAL). Last year with hard work, dedication, and effort, the Lady Gaels were the 2011- 2012 champions. The Lady Gaels mission statement is: The Dublin High School Lady Gaels Soccer program is committed to providing an environment for our student-athletes to be the very best in their classroom endeavors and to reach the pinnacle of their field performance through responsible leadership, guidance, support, and a standard of excellence in all that we do. Dublin High has a total of three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen.

On November 5th and 6th, girls gathered at Fallon Sports park to be evaluated on their physical and technical abilities by the coaches. The varsity head coach is Scott Schoenthal. The program had a very good season last year and were the league champions and made it to the NCS finals game against Bishop O’Dowd where they got second place. “Winning our league was a very special moment for me, but i think what topped the whole season off was the NCS Championship game. I that think we played for each other and I personally played for our seniors. They deserved a win for all their hard work but everything happens for a reason sadly,” said varsity player Hailai Arghandiwal.

Many players are looking forward to this season. “I am excited to see how we develop and progress this year compared to last year. We had a great season last year and although we lost some of our key seniors, we have a group of talented young athletes who can definitely make an impact,” said Varsity player Hailai Arghandiwal. Soccer is also a great way to socialize and meet many new people. Teamwork is one of the most important aspects of the sport, so it is important you become close with your fellow teammates. “I am really excited to socialize and hang out and play soccer with everybody that I haven’t gotten to see with or play with since last season,” said Varsity player Caitlin Benoit.

This past Friday November 9th , the varsity football team defeated Livermore High by a score of 44-21 in the first round of the NCS playoffs. This is Coach Wade’s second season as head coach and he has done a great job coaching the football team, making NCS two years in a row with the boys so far. As the season started, the Gaels were off to a strong start, beating Fresno, Miramonte, and Dougherty Valley. The game against Dougherty Valley was their highest scoring game as they scored a total of fortyfive points. This past week, the team has been practicing hard to prepare for their next game. “We’ve been working on keeping a high tempo, high energy, as well as perfecting all of our plays to make sure we have the best possible performance Friday night,” said sophomore quarterback Josh Nobida. Coach MacDougall is not only a football coach, but also an English teacher at Dublin High School. He is confident, not surprised

team.

“We expect to be in the playoffs every year, that’s why we do what we do,” said Coach MacDougall. Even with all the injuries that

pushed through to be successful. “We set it as our goal that we were going to make NCS. When we lost some key guys to injuries, we never lost hope, we just used our fallen teammates as extra motivation to get an NCS title for them,” said Nobida. It has been quite a rough season for the Gaels injury wise. Losing their star running back Ondre Rudolph to an ankle injury shocked not only the team, but the whole school. The Gaels knew that they had to step up after losing Rudolph and other key players to injury. “Everyone that is on the field, no matter who it is, is expected to be able to do their job,” said Coach MacDougall. “That’s what football is all about, if there is anybody that isn’t doing their job, it’s a weakness.” Tonight, come out to Clayton Valley High School and support your school and go crazy as the Gaels take on the Clayton Valley Eagles!

How to Impress Colleges By Shelby Mark

College. Almost every student in high school is going to attend college, and to get there, students will have to have an impressive application; GPA isn’t the only thing to it. “Join as many clubs as possible, GPA just isn’t enough, it’s really competitive,” said Spanish teacher Mr. Mueller. It’s true, over the years colleges have been accepting only the top students because so many students are applying. “Being in a club for three or four years is more impressive than being in a few,” said Mrs. McGaha, who works in the Career Center. It’s not enough to answer all of the questions on the application and turn it in on time. Applicants must make the college think that, “We need to have this student at our school.” This will take time and planning; it won’t happen overnight. Students need to start doing things like volunteering and taking difficult classes starting from freshman year. Now this doesn’t mean that if you haven’t taken AP classes you won’t get in. It just means that it will be harder to stand out. Volunteering is like the icing on the cake, it really shows colleges that you care and are a well rounded person. “If you know what you want to do

in college try to volunteer in that area,” says Mrs. Halket. This tells colleges that you’re serious about majoring in that area. It’s no secret that solid academics are a plus and will make your college applications look great. Grades are on of the first things that colleges look at and it’s good to have a strong base to the application. Not only do colleges appreciate a student maintaining great grades, they also like seeing extracurricular activities. Many students think extracurricular activities are limited to things that have to do with school, like sports or clubs, but they’re not. Extracurricular activities are anything that you do outside of school, so don’t be afraid to put down things you like to do on your freetime. Colleges do like to see involvement in school. So clubs, sports, and student government won’t hurt when it comes to impressing them. “Find a club where you can be the number one,” added Mr. Mueller. Good grades are just the basics when it comes to impressing colleges, and if you’re one of those students who hasn’t maintained a great GPA, then doing extra things to impress them might give you a fighting chance to get in.

There will always be something that both girls and guys will disagree upon, whether it’s between things like who is smarter or more athletic and better at sports. And when it comes to who is the better driver, it’s no different. It’s been studied that young female drivers are 25 % more likely to eat or drink while being behind the wheel, which can be a distraction when driving. Boys, however, are more than twice as likely to

turn around in their seats while driving, which can completely take their vision away from the road. “I think girls, definitely girls, they’re much more responsible when it comes to driving,” junior Narjis Sheikh states when asked on who she thinks is a better driver between a guy and a girl. Showing a guys perspective, Junior Chris Larson says, “It’s even for guys and girls, both genders are pretty good at driving.” Another study released by Quality Planning, an analytics company, states that women came on top when it was shown that girls are typically better at driving. It’s proven that guys are most likely to break traffic laws when on the road than girls are. Of course there are all types of drivers and it’s not always guy who drive crazy. But what skills does a person need to have that makes him or her a good driver? “For a guy

7

listening to music, just not too loud, and focusing on the road makes us better at driving.” adds Akash Shah, junior. But that doesn’t mean that theory always works for the boys. Senior Gaby Vasquez says that, ”Girls care more when driving than guys do.” Vasquez also stated that “When driving, girls know not to do certain things, guys get more distracted, they look at every little thing on the road.” This will always continue to be an on going battle of the sexes because their opinions on who they think is more responsible and more cautious when being on the road will always differ. It’s best if everyone just to stay focused while driving so that you don’t put yourself and others in danger along those lines. Just keep it simple, and drive safe.

Obsession With Our Looks by Mimi Maghrbi

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? Thirty to forty-five minutes? An hour? You are not alone. In a survey of 50 young women at Dublin High and averaged the data. It turns out that on average it takes the girls at Dublin High forty-five minutes to an hour to get ready in the morning. This time may consist of showering, washing their faces, brushing their teeth, hair, makeup, clothes, perfume, and even more. But the real question is, why spend so much time getting ready? Who or even what is it for? And is it skin deep or deeper? There should be a balance between looking good and doing well in school. “If you want to put on makeup because you feel more comfortable doing that, then feel free to do so, but your main priority should be school because that’s what you’re here for,” says Robyn Rowell, a senior fashionista here at DHS. Avoid Awkwardness with Bathroom Etiquette NHL Lockout Continues By Mimi Maghbri

Have you ever had an awkward bathroom encounter? Issues with bathroom etiquette have been continuously voiced among the student body at Dublin High. Not only is bathroom etiquette important in the bathrooms at Dublin High, they are also important in bathrooms everywhere. This includes: airport bathrooms, restaurant bathrooms, and bathrooms of your peers or relatives. Whether the etiquette rules are common sense or learned over the years, it has become essential that ladies and gentlemen at our school learn, obey, and live by these rules. The first problem we have at Dublin High is awkward encounters and moments that are made in the bathroom. A common moment when things get awkward is when there are only two people that do not know each other in that bathroom. “One person is at the mirrors and one person is in the stall, if it is dead silent, the person at the mirror can hear every move that the person in the stall makes. It’s uncomfortable for both,” says Senior Amanda Mponte. A tip for the person at the mirror would be to turn on the hand dryer so that no noises are heard between the two. Another way would be to sing loudly so that the person in the stall can feel free to move about and enjoy music at the same time. Lastly, the person

at the sink could wash their hands and the sound of the water running could block out noises. Even if they did not use the restroom, you can never be too careful about bacterial infections. All these are ways to prevent awkwardness in bathrooms. The second crime committed in the bathroom is people not being able to clean up after themselves. Some students are so caught up in making it to class on time that they forget to flush the toilet after it has been soiled. This can cause problems for other students who want to use the restroom. “When I walk in and I see a full toilet not flushed, I cannot use that stall anymore...it is tarnished and

not usable until a brave person will flush it for that person,” says Mponte. Another offense is when students leave toilet paper or other toiletries on the ground, around the stall, and on the sinks. “The custodians are not here to clean after students’ messes,” says Ms. Velez, Dublin High teacher. “The students at DHS are grown up and should be able to dispose of toiletries properly,” Just remember these tips to make the bathrooms a safer place for you, me, and staff at Dublin High. Beware that you are not the only student using that restroom and overall, be sure to always be courteous.

There is a chance that there will be no NHL season this year. On September 15, commissioner Gary Bettman declared a lockout when a new collective bargaining agreement, which is a contract between the owners and players, could not be reached. This is the third lockout since Bettman became commissioner and games through the end of November have already been canceled. This agreement issue is not only hurting the league and its players, but it is also hurting the fans. “You know, I’m pretty upset that Bettman is continuing this lockout,” says senior Billy Garrity. ”I do not feel the same without the NHL. Hopefully we play some puck this year.” The NHL has already lost over 100 million dollars in this lockout alone, and money has been a big issue. The owners want to decrease the player’s shares of revenue. They also want to eliminate signing bonuses that players receive when they sign with a team. “It’s the number four league,” says Ms. Carhart. ”They can’t afford to lose fans.” With a total of 326 games already cancelled and negotiations currently at a halt, it appears that the hope for these few games might not be enough.

In the meantime, players have been exploring other options. Some players have been conditioning to stay in shape for the upcoming season, but others have had a different approach. Over 140 NHL players have left the league to go play in European leagues like the Kontinental Hockey League, Czech Extraliga, and National League A. These players include the Sharks Joe Thorton, the Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk and the Capitals Alexander Ovechkin. Players are not just going to sit around and wait for the owners to come around. They’ve taken the initiative to go play in other leagues to stay in shape and continue playing hockey. “Hockey fans are particularly passionate,” says Ms. Carhart. Both fans and players alike are waiting for the lockout to come to an end. “It’s really annoying that the lockout is still going on,” says senior Matt Victoriano.”I was really looking forward to this season and watching the Sharks play. Hopefully the NHL will at least play a few games this year.” Even President Barack Obama went on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and told the owners and the Players’ Association to get a deal done for fans. Both sides have been proposing new deals and hope to end the lockout soon.
