Introducing the men’s varsity basketball players one by one really brought entertainment to the crowd as they each got a chance to shoot and dunk baskets in creative ways, even if they didn’t make it the crowd was still there to cheered them on. To show the love on Valentine’s day, the next game was between the most popular couples in school and it consisted of popping three balloons in between each other’s chest. Seniors Alex Cappa and Emily Morehead, with a lot of struggle, were able to pop the balloons before any other couple could. Alex, later on with Senior Mitch Kless, made a small skit performing to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and Britney Spears’ “... Baby One More Time” leaving everyone in laughter. Following that up, the cheer team did an amazing job performing to a few songs such as “Turn Me On” by Nicki Minaj and so did the dance club with their electronic beats and hip pop version of “Big Spender.” In the end, everyone had a blast and enjoyed the day as they left the Sports Complex with smiles and new memories.

Credit:Rob Carr/Getty Images. This year’s Super Bowl was the showdown of coaches John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens and Jim Harbaugh of the San Francisco 49ers. They made history when they became the first duo of brothers in Super Bowl history to coach in the NFL championship game. The pre-game performances featured the Sandy Hook Elementary school chorus for “America the Beautiful” with Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys for “The Star-Spangled Banner” on the piano. “Despite the slow speed of it, Alicia Keys did a really good job singing the National Anthem,” Senior Courtney Starr said. People not only do watch for football, but also for the entertainment. Some standout commercials included Go Daddy’s

controversial “Perfect Match”, Audi’s “Prom”, Doritos’ “Goat 4 Sale” and Budweiser’s “Clydesdales Horses.” The commercials brought out various emotions in the viewers from disgusting to heartwarming. “I think that the commercials this year were lacking some of the humor they’d had in previous years,” Starr said. “However, the Tides commercial with the stain was pretty funny, it was my favorite.” Viewers were instantly impressed the minute Beyoncé stepped on stage and fans got excited for the Destiny’s Child reunion when Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams came onto the stage. Her halftime performance included technological wonders with the help of video screens and fireworks to make the experience illuminating.

Spring is in the Air By Fernanda Ramos

About ninety seconds into the second half, the Mercedes Benz Superdome began to experience technical problems with the lights coincidentally after the halftime show. It caused a roughly thirtyfive minute delay of the game and it upstarted the 49ers’ comeback led by quarterback Colin Kaepernick from a 28-6 deficit, only to end up short at the end. “I felt happy that the 49ers made it after 18 years and even though they didn’t win, they are still my team!” Senior Noemi Rivera said. “Kaepernick is a good quarterback and everything he had set up has come true.” The Baltimore Ravens won 34-31 and it was a bittersweet moment for the Harbaugh brothers as well as linebacker Ray Lewis, who played his last game of his NFL career. “I think that the Ravens did really well,” Senior Morgan Brizee said. “They really were in it to win it from the beginning.” The 2013 Super Bowl gave fans a treat and it became one of the most entertaining games in history that will forever be remembered by those who watched.

ABOVE: The Boy Scouts have been an organization lauded for their commitment to tradition. Will they change their values for gay members? Credit: David Lees/ Getty Images The Boy Scouts of America and the national executive board that governs the organization are considering ending its ban against openly gay members. The organization started a three-day meeting on Monday, February 4 with the issue to be put to a vote on Wednesday, February 6 and the decision to be announced soon. The meeting will be held at a hotel near the Boy Scouts headquarter near Irving, Texas. As of Wednesday, the vote was put to a “hold”, meaning any further decisions would be suspended until May. The Boy Scouts of America has been under heavy scrutiny lately for a number of reasons. The organization’s ban has faced criticism under a growing acceptance of LGBT Americans. The Boy Scouts were also revealed to have been covering up decades of child sexual abuse within the organization. Membership in the Boy Scouts has significantly dropped and donations and contributions to the organization have been halted by activists seeking an end to the ban. Under such criticism, the Boy Scouts may be desperate to show Americans an improved organization so they can increase membership and funding The Boy Scouts are a century-

old organization whose main objective is teaching young boys life-survival skills through traditional values. That such an organization is considering allowing openly-gay members has caused controversy, with many people applauding the steps towards acceptance and others claiming that gay members would violate their faith and the ideals represented by the Boy Scouts. The difference in opinion on this matter is representative of the view that America has towards gay rights. While many Americans still oppose equality for all, acceptance towards LGBT Americans has been increasing and is evident through administration changes and increasing civil rights, such as the repeal of the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. With organizations slowly moving towards acceptance, it is a positive indicator of the changes caused by the growing gay movement in America. This is good news for LGBT members but could cause controversy in Dublin among those that oppose equality based on sexual discrimination. These pro-gay movements are in the same kin as those of women’s rights and colored rights and the future of America depends on such developments.

Singles Awareness Day By Menisha Sohal

ABOVE: “Magazines can be a style guide for new Spring trends” Credit: Fernanda Ramos Get ready to put away your big coats and rain boots, spring is in the air and that means less sweaters and hoodies. Winter can be pretty harsh, especially in a city like Dublin, but with spring right around the corner it’s time to bring back out your cute shorts, tank tops, bro-tee’s, and sandals. Designers and stores all over the world like H&M, Michael Kors, American Eagle, and Urban Outfitters are ready to bring out their 2013 spring collections into stores. Many of their clothing lines have vibrant colors, pastels, bold black and whites, and blue and green color blockin . “I’m really into the high waisted shorts and aviators,” says Sophomore Savannah Weiser. “They really bring me back to the 70’s and I think it’s the perfect spring look.” Fashion has evolved over hundreds of years and has taken such a hold on modern clothing styles. Icons like Marilyn Monroe to Audrey Hepburn, Tyson Beckford to James Dean have really inspired teens today. “Big floppy hats, they are my absolute fav and I think it’s awe-

some that Michelle Obama is trying to bring them back.” says Weiser, who is a fanatic of the 50’s fashion era and loves the old fashion poodle skirts and the major use of nylon and polyester in women’s everyday wardrobes back then. Stripes, military greens, sport elements, and primary colors are huge this spring season for menswear for a cool, modern look. Adding a nice fresh fitted button-down shirt to dark blue jeans seem to be one of the most popular looks for spring. “What I’m most happy to wear this spring are cargo shorts,” says Junior Alexander Huggins. ”They’re the main thing I look forward too.” Be creative this upcoming season and try something new you probably saw in a magazine or store that you might like to wear, and it’s never too late to show off your style. In words of the Vogue Fashion editor Anna Wintour , “Create your own style… Let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.”

ABOVE: Woman crying in bed with broken heart shapes on bed. Credit: Image Source Singles Awareness Day comes around every year on February 14th. That date sound familiar? That’s because it’s also Valentines Day. The most romantic holiday is also an empowering day for the rest of the world that chooses to be single. It originated its date with Valentines Day because all the single people were realizing how sad it was to be single on a day that is so commercially based off of couples. Having to see all the Hallmark cards, chocolate displays at stores, special kinds of cakes at bakeries, heart shaped pizzas, commercials, and online advertisements. Some people

interpret it as a very S.A.D thing, but the more optimists out there realize it’s a day of encouragement and self love. But in Dublin High the majority of the students are single. Yet every year when the time comes the excitement is expanding. But why is this? “I just think that people are excited for one another and that they have a secret fantasy that they are the ones that has a Valentine,” says Junior Anthony Shouse. Maybe he is right. That we live our wanted fantasies through others. “I think that people are just happy to be single and are em-

bracing the fact that they don’t need anyone in particular to share it with,” an annonymous source says in contrast. And then there are others like Junior Kevin Silky, that simply “don’t care” because to them its just an ordinary day with zero impact on their lives. All throughout life people stress over the idea of being single or “alone” as how they would put it, but this day helps show that just because you’re lonely doesn’t mean you’re alone. You have friends and family who love and care about you so don’t let a cliche holiday ruin your fun of celebrating Singles Awareness Day.

Black Student Union Upset Warriors: The Biggest Surprise in the Bay By Alison Martinez at Lack of Black History By Jasmine Virk

February is month that is mostly remembered for Valentine’s Day and so the month is typically summarized by boxes of chocolates, flowers, and diamond jewelry that couples give to one another to signify their love. But February is also a month of equality as Black History Month takes place during this pink heart-laden month. However, the sad reality is that many students are unaware of when or even what Black History Month is. Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is the annual February celebration of achievements by black Americans and push for these achievements and for African-American rights and equality to be recognized throughout the country. Historian Carter G. Woodson and other noted African Americans created the month and it first originated as “Negro History Week”. Since February 1976, February has been allocated as the month for which Black history is to be celebrated and each United States president has upheld this tradition. Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries around the world also devote time to celebrating black achievement. But how do local communities, such as schools, celebrate black history month? In a general consensus, most schools celebrate the month by devoting time for lectures on prominent African-

Americans in American history and their contributions towards society. Schools also talk about the civil rights era and how equality is still struggled to be attained or maintained today. As for Dublin High, no notable event was made and many students can only recall a quote about African-American history in the morning announcements as the school’s only acknowledgment of this historical and important month. The campus’ Black Student Union has expressed discontent with how Black History Month is being handled at Dublin High and has made attempts to increase awareness about African-American figures and rights. “I think that the Black Student Union is a doing a good job at recognizing the achievements of African Americans and those of African descent in our country’s history, but before their involvement, I never really felt the school did much to recognize the groundbreaking work and efforts of Africans Americans,” said Senior Sharanya Stanley. Despite their unhappiness with the school’s neglect of Black History Month, the Black Student Union continues to fight for increased exposure to the month for “Now, however, I believe we are all becoming a bit more informed, mainly in part of the club’s efforts,” Stanley continues.

Cyberbullying Hurts DHS By Brittany Roberts

You see it, I see it, but no one ever says anything. Well, it’s time to now. Bullying by definition is a person who is overbearing, cowardly, and someone who enjoys picking on and terrorizing other people. There are so many people like that at DHS, it’s ridiculous, but it’s mainly girls picking on girls. People have so much built up hate and just think it’s okay to make people feel like they are less than others and make people feel like it’s okay to knock others down to boost themselves up; also making them think it’s not okay to get adults involved. The most common kind of bullying exemplified at DHS is cyberbullying. Cyberbullies are those people who like to talk about others online. Mainly shown on Twitter and Instagram. These bullies will do things such as posting pictures pretending to be like them, posting pictures just to have a few laughs, subtweeting about someone when everyone knows who you’re talking about, and just talking down to people over the internet. Honestly what is the purpose of that? To make yourself seem cool in front of a whole bunch of people? Because it makes you feel good about yourself? Well..NO.. Honestly it’s just hurtful and horrible to act like that towards people. People at DHS are afraid to acknowledge their own feelings. They’re not comfortable with saying how they really feel without getting judged. It may surprise some of you but words really do hurt and they can have an effect on how people live. There are also the little nosey people that like to keep the pot stirring. Those are the fakest people of all. All they want to do is see the drama, the fight, or the mess that’s happening at the moment because truth be told, they don’t care about either person who’s having problems because if they did, they wouldn’t want to

see them in that situation. Those people are called instigators, those are the ones who comment on the drama and run between the two people that are having issues and make the drama even worse than it has to be. If the instigators (friends) are hanging out with both of them, best believe that they ARE running in between the two crying “ he said..” “she said..” just to make it worse. Hard as it may be to believe, some people do take all these words you throw at them personally. Some people can’t handle getting a whole bunch of names thrown at them online or in person, having to deal with you at school and then go home and deal with harder and more serious stuff there. You honestly just have to be careful what you say because you don’t know what people go through unless you are them. Most bullies will look at this and say to themselves “ Well this isn’t me” or “I don’t care what she has to say,” but how would you feel if somebody that you continuously made fun of took their life and committed suicide because they couldn’t handle and couldn’t tolerate being around that anymore. What you found as fun they found as torture. I could never possible imagine making somebody feel that kind of pain, but you bullies do it all the time and think it’s a joke and don’t even care. There is a 73% rate that students will commit suicide from being bullied in high school. Wake up DHS, we are in high school, 4 years away from becoming adults. Is this really what you want to be known as? Someone who hurts others just because they can? No one is saying you having to like and be friends with everyone, just stop all the hurt and unnecessary drama for no reason. Think before you act or before you type. It will have better results.

ABOVE: Point guard Stephen Curry #30 and power forward David Lee #10 of the Golden State Warriors are two of the biggest components in the Warriors’ success. Credit: Rocky Widner The Golden State Warriors are on the verge of becoming a playoff contender, off to their best start since the 2007-2008 season, infamously known for their “We Believe” campaign. They have beaten high-caliber teams and the Warriors were thought to have a low record, especially after they traded their franchise player, Monta Ellis in 2012. Fans were completely unsure of how effective the Warriors were going to be this season due to issues of point guard Stephen Curry’s ankle and power forward David Lee’s effectiveness. The Warriors suffered a huge blow when they lost their best defender in swingman Brandon Rush to a season-ending ACL tear. They also have three rookies on the team, Harrison Barnes, Festus Ezeli and Draymond Green. However, the Warriors appeared to overcome the obstacles that they have faced in the previous years.

“They’re doing pretty good,” Senior Tommy Dang said. “It’s fun seeing the Bay Area’s team get off to a good start, and possibly even make it to the playoffs. I’ve always loved watching them play.” In the offseason, the front office made successful acquisitions in free agents Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry, who were thought to have small roles, only to become a part of the big success when they come off the bench. Golden State had a rigorous road trip in December, but it turned out to be one of the greatest road trip stints in NBA history, taking six out of seven games. The Warriors were in their prime, with Curry and swingman Klay Thompson leading the NBA in three-pointers. “Curry’s a team player and a playmaker and brings the best out in others,” Senior Christian Guzman said. Curry and Thompson are considered one of the best sharp-

shooting backcourt tandems in the NBA. Lee continued to bank shot after shot and rebound every board that was up in the air, currently having thirty-two double doubles. “They’re cooperating really well for being such a young team and I believe David Lee has been one of the best players, he’s contributed so much this season,” Senior Tisha Thimbunjuad said. “At the beginning of the season I always think the Warriors are going to do well, I always try to be optimistic every season.” Center Andrew Bogut has returned from his ankle injury rehab and the Warriors have struggled as of recent, but they have shown fans that they can do the virtually impossible with their balanced lineup. On this pace, the Warriors are looking to clinch a playoff spot for the first time in five years.

Childhood Obesity Epidemic By Shelby Mrak

healthy lifestyle. On this season of The Biggest Loser they are focusing especially on the youth of America. They are showing that there is a lot more to childhood obesity than just eating habits. What affects almost every overweight child is bullying. This bullying is putting them down, making them feel bad, and causing them to eat even more. They turn to food because food is a comfort, and many times it’s the only thing they can turn to. A majority of American children are overweight for many reasons. One, of course, would be because of unhealthy eating habits. The solution for this is obvious and simple. Cut back on the sugars (soda especially) and carbs, eat more protein, and take a couple hours out of your day to cook your meals.

ABOVE: The boy is excited to eat the candy in his hands, bringing up the issue of diabetes. Credit: Getty Images For decades now America has suffered from morbid obesity. It has been getting worse and worse even with efforts to stop it. Well now it is not just affecting adults, it is affecting the children of America. The very children who are the future of this country. If this epidemic does not start to turn

around there is no telling where America will be in even ten or twenty years. Efforts are being made on the well known show, The Biggest Loser. This is a very helpful and informative show that stresses the hazards of excess weight and informs people on how to lead a

Another contribution to the epidemic is video games. Many children come home after school and go straight to the tv to play video games. In fact studies show that children now spend about 55 hours a week playing them. A recent study in 2010 by the CDC revealed that every one in three children are overweight or obese. And 215,000 adolescents have either pre diabetes or type one diabetes. Childhood obesity, and obesity in general, must be taken seriously. Prevention is the best cure but when that does not work it is possible to fix it, however not always without permanent consequences.

the candy sale during the holiday season last year when we sold kit kats and twix with holiday messages attached.” Saha says the main event this year, that was majorly successful, was the Giving Tree Project that was held for the SPCA this holiday season. The tree was placed in Concord Feed near the Dublin Public Library. The club had written all sorts of requests from a pet’s point of view to customers shopping at Concord Feed, and customers would purchase an item requested off of the Giving Tree and place it beneath the tree for the club to collect. “We sold literally everything off the tree plus more,” Saha exclaims. “Around a thousand dollars worth of items were purchased and for that we and the

SPCA are very grateful.” Recently the club has returned back to its usual business in increasing awareness. Saha says posters, fundraisers, and more are to be expected from the club soon. As far as adoptions go, the Friends of the SPCA has hopes of increasing the number of adoptions this year. Last year the club aimed for two adoptions and was able to end the year with four adoptions. “Countless people bought supplies and gave money that we then were able to donate to the East Bay SPCA,” advisor Ms. McGinley says about the Giving Tree Project. “For the future, I would like to see that we keep increasing our goal of helping homeless pets find forever homes and that we continue our donation efforts.”

In the path to becoming a teacher, one of the stops is student teaching. For Marcus Humphrey students teaching at Dublin High was a part of his journey. Mr. Humphrey was introduced to Mrs. Cunningham’s classes at the beginning of the year. The students felt apprehensive when they first met him, according to Charles Simon. “We were used to Mrs. Cunningham but we grew to love and joke around with Mr. Humphrey. We took him into our family.” said Senior Charles Simon. Mr. Humphrey taught students many new things and many life lessons about how to survive in the real world. Graduating as a 2006 Dublin High Alumni, Mr. Humphrey graduated from CSU Monterey Bay with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and got his teaching credential at National University. He is currently finishing school for his Masters Degree. He chose teaching because he enjoyed it more than his office job. “I felt like I was making more of an impact which is what I love,” says Mr. Humphrey Mr. Humphrey likes to teach high school because he feels high school students are more mature. “I enjoy helping to make them successful for college or the workforce,” he says. Mr. Humphrey made a huge impact on our class and will be deeply missed. But, don’t fret because Mr. Humphrey will be around substitute teaching at DHS for a while. He said he enjoyed

Gun control has always been a source of intense debate, but more so now in light of the recent mass shootings that have happened. It has prompted U.S. citizens to address this issue, and there has been a high demand to take action on it. Since the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, there have been proposals to make schools a much safer environment. One of the ideas being discussed would be arming teachers and the school staff with guns. “I think that this would provide a sense of security to parents and students if and only if it’s done properly.” Says Junior Martin Yau. Most school safety experts would advise against this, since there would be major risks with the

implementation of such a policy. “If we do give our teachers guns, it can’t just be handed out, they should be trained on how to use them and how to store properly, and they should be subject to further background checks,” says Senior Grant Estrada. Some argue that it’s ideal for educators to be able to protect their students, and that they should be able to have access to weapons in school facilities in case of any threats. But this is a very extreme and drastic measure that could end up being a situation that would hold schools liable and responsible for any accidents that may happen. It would be more understandable and reasonable if security in schools were improved through having trained and certi-

The club wishes to increase awareness about the organization and the animals there, as well as spread awareness against animal cruelty. In an effort to make this happen, the club collects donations and holds fundraisers. “We’ve done a lot of fundraisers,” President Noirita Saha says. “One in particular that I liked was

He believes that we should “try to stop the causes of those violent situations at the start rather than dealing with the consequences.” The proposal of this policy is merely a subcategory in the realm of gun control debates. In the end, what we need to focus on would be strategies to establish a safer environment. We need to approach this problem in a rational way. Violence is not something that could be permanently erased, but there are ways to lessen it.

Besides academics, Jiang spends a lot of her time playing the guzheng. For more than ten years Jiang has been practicing and playing this ancient Chinese string instrument. “I play in the orchestra and also play competitively against musicians from all over the United States and sometimes from China and Taiwan,” Jiang states. “Recently, I produced a music album, Fantasia, with some of my favorite pieces, some of which I arranged myself.” Between spending time on academics and playing the guzheng, Jiang finds time on her own to read a new book or make origami. Jiang also enjoys playing Chinese checkers with her grandmother and finds memorizing pi fascinating. “She is a role model for many students,” Spanish teacher Ms. Soule exclaims. “Hard working, positive attitude (always with a smile), and very smart.” Malina Jiang sees herself pursuing a career in a math-related field, but possibly also a career that requires multidisciplinary skills. Jiang believes in the line, “I can.”

Dear Meems,

Are You In a Healthy Relationship? By Lauren Flint

Having an unhealthy relationship does not always mean having an abusive relationship. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month and it is a time to recognize that young relationships can also be unhealthy or abusive. It is important that teens become aware of the signs of a potentially harmful relationship. Some questions to ask are: Do I feel comfortable being open? Does my partner respect my independence and individuality? Does my partner respect that I have other important people and things in my life? Do I have support from my partner? Answering no to any of these questions may mean that your partner has extreme jealousy or controlling problems, which are major signs of an unhealthy relationship. One in three adolescents in the US experience physical, verbal, sexual or emotional abuse from their dating partner. Many are not aware that dating violence is even an issue among youth and teens. Teen Dating Violence Awareness takes place in order to inform people that this is indeed an issue that can be addressed by educating teens

and adults about what makes an unhealthy relationship. Just because a relationship is not physically abusive does not mean that it is as healthy as it could be. Many teens have a hard time recognizing that there relationship is unhealthy. Some think that certain actions are normal but they are not and it can be damaging to one or both partners in a relationship. Dublin High School’s Girl Club’s focuses on healthy and unhealthy relationships this month and their goal is to make a difference in the amount of teen dating violence. They will be holding an event on school campus with more information on identifying and preventing violence in a relationship. The date for this event is Thursday, February 28 in front of the library. Girl Club also focuses on topics such as self esteem, equality, and empowering women. The more the merrier, and more powerful of an impact! If you are interested contact Ms. Gallaway or Mrs. Streisand Hall.

Something Wicked This Way Comes By Ana Cruz

ABOVE: Wicked has been playing at the Orpheum Theater for the past month. Credit: Sarah Stierch Winner of 35 major awards such as the Tony Awards and the Grammys, Wicked is a musical about the untold story of the witches of Oz, based on the movie of L. Frank Baum’s classic novel. The plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and includes comical references to the 1939 film. It tells the story of two unlikely friends who meet and become roommates at Shiz University, a Hogwarts-type school at Oz. Elphaba was born

with emerald green skin and is passionate, smart, and always under scrutiny. She will later become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda the beautiful, popular, and ambitious, will later be known as the Good Witch of the North. Their friendship is tested when they differ in their approach to the Wizard’s, (the same wizard from L. Frank Baum’s novel) corrupt government. They also face tension over having the same love-interest, and opposing

personalities and viewpoints. “This musical is wicked awesome.” Says audience member John Frederick. From January 23 to February 17, Wicked performed at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco. The tickets sold out quickly, as expected. The cast was sensational; Dee Roscioli has performed the intense, demanding role of Elphaba more than any other actress, around a thousand times. Patti Murin plays the self-absorbed but lovable role of Glinda and her comedic timing was sharp. Murin puts in the program that she is, “absolutely thrilled to travel all over the country by bubble!”. The scenic design and the smooth transition of the play contributed to the overall exceptional play. “Wicked has the most brain, heart, and courage than any other musical I know,” says Senior Reed Sights, who saw the performance in February. The musical explores the age-old question of whether wickedness starts from birth or if society made them that way, which connects to the concept of nature versus nurture. It highlights the importance of and the sacrifices that have to be made in order to stand up for what is right. The music spawns from delightful to heart-wrenching to comedic, it remains true to the magical theme of Wicked.

Health Tip: Choosing Your Dessert By Shelby Mrak

Ice cream and gelato. Ever wonder if there is a difference between the two? Well there is. And it’s not just eating home made gelato in Italy compared to eating store bought ice cream on your couch. For one, gelato has about half the fat that ice cream contains, which is partially due to how it is made. This is something that people who are very health conscious will appreciate. Also, gelato is churned at a much slower rate than ice cream is. Making it thick and creamy. Because of the way it is made it has less air and therefore is more dense, which wins over many people, whereas a majority of the ice cream at stores are aerated, and by doing so the mixtures volume increases by ten to twenty-five percent. Although some of the premium ice creams only add a little air, which generally tastes better. Here in Dublin, ice cream shops

are much easier to find. We have a Cold Stone Creamery, Baskin Robbins, and Nirvanaah. Whereas when it comes to finding a gelato place, you really have to look hard for it. There is no gelato shop in Dublin, but there is one in Pleasanton, Yolatea. At Yolatea they have more than just gelato. There is also yogurt, tea, and crepes. So which do people prefer? “I prefer gelato because I have it less often,” says sophomore Amanda Godwin. “Umm, that’s tough. I think gelato, because it just seems fancier. But I prefer ice cream as a companion. So gelato by itself, but ice cream if i’m eating it with something,” says a former Dublin High student, Jaz Zielinski. Even though gelato has won in this poll both are perfect for a hot day.

ABOVE: The Grammys were held on Sunday, February 9. Credit: Robert Daly The 2013 Grammys started off with a reminiscing start from the host LL Cool J and then turned into a colorful performance of “We Are Never Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift. She performed it with an Alice and Wonderland type theme, which was very irrelevant to the song, but still creative. After that came Ed Sheeran performing “A Team” and then Fun performing “Carry On”. During their performance it began to rain on the stage. Adele won the first award of the show for best pop solo performance. Adele won for a live performance of a song that won album of the year last year. For the next performances Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley bring country to the stage, and then Miguel and Wiz Khalifa start to sing “Adorn” in the middle of the audience. Afterwards they introduce the best country solo performance award, which went to Carrie Underwood. Next category was song of the year. “We Are Young” by Fun ends up winning the award.

After this Mumford and Sons perform “I Will Wait”. Next the TV color goes to sepia color, and Justin Timberlake made his comeback to the music word with “Suit & Tie”. Next, Frank Ocean won best urban contemporary, which Chris Brown is not too happy about. After that The Black Keys won best rock performance. Maroon 5 then performed with Alicia Keys and Rihanna performs “Stay”. Zac Brown Band then wins Best Country Album. Bruno Mars then began to sing his song “Locked out of Heaven”, but then his performance to turned into a Bob Marley tribute. Rihanna and Ziggy Marley take the stage to perform “Could You Be Loved’. The Lumineers sang “Ho Hey” while Taylor Swift danced along. The performance then lead to Jack White’s. Carrie Underwood then performed in an amazing dress, which has different graphics shown on it. To end the awards, the host LL Cool J, performs. This was a very successful award show.

A Rekindled Debate: Gun Control

By Liam Bird

Gun control is a hot topic that has been all over the news lately. Whether or not we should ban guns as a whole, or to enforce stricter gun laws and include better background checks seem to be what is most talked about. The talk of stricter gun laws is brought after almost every mass shooting, and this year started to increase after the Aurora theater, and quickly escalated after the shooting at Newtown, Connecticut. People bring up how the event could have been prevented or been less catastrophic, and this usually leads to talk of stricter gun laws, which is is a good thing. Gun control is reasonable and would lead to a significant drop in gun related violence in America. Many people argue that if we enforce more and stricter guns laws, then violence and even crime rates in America will drop. Stricter background checks to keep guns away from people who may have mental issues, smaller clips to prevent gunman from mowing down civilians, and the outlawing of semi-auto assault weapons are just a few examples.. Stricter gun control laws are also comforting to some people. So stricter gun laws seem reasonable; well, it would be if we could get something done about them. Like with most national issues, the country is divided between two sides, the people who support stricter gun control laws, and those who believe the current gun laws

ABOVE: A close up of a gun Creit: Gettyimages.com should be left alone. This presents a big obstacle in our democratic society where both sides are practically split. Unless people can come together and come up with a reasonable consensus rather then throwing out what the other side says and insisting they’re wrong, something might actually get done about these sort of issues. Both sides of the issue need to come and work together and try to find a reasonable solution to a the violence that occurs from gun use. The president and congress need to listen to both sides of argument completely, rather then picking out the potential downfalls of a proposed plan. Trying to please the voters when the country is so divided won’t accomplish anything. Politicians need to realize that by arguing, nothing is being accomplished to solve this problem, and that provides more opportunity for another Newtown to occur.

Last Friday Night By Danielle Boccio It’s Friday right after the final bell has rung and everyone on campus couldn’t be happier to leave and decide what to make of their weekend. Your bestfriends parents have left for the weekend and the first thing that pops into your mind is to have a party. No one is home and by the time they get back on Sunday there will be no evidence anything had happened. Seems like the perfect plan....Or is it? The cops arrive and break up the party, the least that could happen is they send everyone home. On average a person could get billed up to $1,000 for the police having to come to break up the party. Parents can be held liable for your actions whether or not they knew about to party and could be subject for arrest and even jail time.

“My parents weren’t arrested or anything, but they were charged for each cop who showed up to break up the party. It ended up costing around $2,000,” says a senior who wished to be unnamed. The fine for a DUI could be up to $3,000, license suspension, traffic school, court, or even jail time. The worst consequence could be death. “I got caught drunk driving coming home from a Halloween party last year,” says a second anonymous source. “My license was suspended for a year and I had to pay a $390 DUI fine and take traffic school classes that cost around $600. My parents were furious and I was grounded for 2 and a half months.” Accidental deaths or injuries on

your property at an illegal party will be entirely your fault from a legal standpoint and you or your parents can get arrested. “ The people who ended up going to the hospital charged my family for the hospital bills, because they had attended my party,” says the unnamed senior. All in all is the party really worth the risk? You could put lives in danger and set yourself up for legal and financial trouble. Not to mention how angry your parents will get once they realize you took advantage of their trust in you. Maybe throwing that party isn’t the best idea after all...

Hottest iPhone Apps

The Dublin Shield Staff

By Caitlyn Murray

Many people at our school own an iPhone, iPad, iTouch, or some sort of Apple product. They are all very useful and can be used to communicate or do research. But teens mainly use the apps. One of the most popular apps is Instagram. Instagram is a photo sharing app that lets you take pictures and edit them with a choice of 19 different filters. The pictures then show up on the news feed with a unique square shape. Instagram also allows you to share the photos on different social network sites like Twitter and Facebook. “I like Instagram because it’s different than the other social network websites and lets me see what all my friend are up to,” said Junior Jon Rompel. Also a lot of people like to use the app to edit photos and make them look more interesting. “I like instagram because I like being able to edit the photos and put cool filters on them,” said Junior, Hannah Neckar. There are also some apps that are used to have a good laugh. “One of my favorite apps is Fatbooth because its hilarious,” said Junior Joe Hailey. Fatbooth lets you take a picture of someone, then it changes their face to make them appear fat. “The best app hands down is Snapchat,” said Junior, Haleigh
