Life beyond the classroom The lives of teachers outside of Eaton High School YeseniaDiaz staffreporter

Outside of school, teacher Andrew Jorgensen likes to spend time with his family. He likes to fulfill the needs and hobbies of his two sons, making sure that they get to do what they want to do whenever possible.

Derek Weigle and his wife love to run and go on adventures together. Their goal is to run a half marathon in every state in the United States.

Christina Contreras loves to workout outside of school. Contreras competes in CrossFit competitions and hopes to do more competitions this summer if COVID-19 allows for such.

Every month Kendall Williams tries something new.

One month she bought a subscription to get a new book each month. Then she went through a painting phase, and this month she’s currently in a gaming phase where she plays a game called World of Warcraft.

Amy Irwin loves to travel all over the world. Over breaks and over the summer she travels with family, friends, and even students. In past years Irwin has chaperoned trips to San Diego, Nashville, Atlanta, Greece, and Italy.

Doug Preston took up golf a few years ago when he was stationed in Hawaii. The picture shows him playing while he was on a combat deployment in Afghanistan.

Brittany Turnbull likes to get out of the house as much as she can with her family. She likes to go to concerts and loves to camp with her family.

Aleena Griffin spends her time outside of school reading or hanging out with her husband and traveling. Whether it’s somewhere in Colorado or a country halfway across the world, she always has good stories to tell.

After breaking ground for the new high school on Jan. 11, there has been significant progress on the construction site.

The estimated finish time is the end of July in 2022. We will

open the new facility for the Fall 2022 school year.”

The progress of the new high school is right on track to be finished in July, and ready for the students at the start of the 2022 school year.

Planning begins for a potential prom Students, staff, and parents discuss options

aubreyledall staffreporter Prom is a staple high school event that almost all juniors and seniors look forward to attending in the spring. Girls spend hours picking out the perfect dress and boys find dashing suits to wear. Couples and groups find the ideal dinner spot and plan on dancing the night away. Last year, in the spring of 2020, prom was canceled due to Covid-19.

The district shut down in-person learning, forcing students to go online and say goodbye to spring events during the last three months of school. This year there is a light at the end of a long tunnel for the junior and senior classes: the chance to have a prom. Because of all the changes last year, the senior class wasn’t able to have a prom

as juniors. The 2021 class is excited that they can experience some iconic high school moments. “I’m looking forward to prom this year because it is something that makes your senior year. We didn’t get to go last year and haven’t had many senior experiences this year,” said Joseline Espinoza (21).

Covid isn’t taking away the prom planning committee’s creative ideas and timely preparations. Students and sponsors have scheduled the 2021 prom for April 17 from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Initially, prom was supposed to be held at the Eaton Recreation Center, however, the guest capacity limitations at the Rec Center required the committee to be innovative and utilize their resources. Prom will now be

hosted at Eaton High School in both the main and auxiliary gym which will allow for up to 250 guests (between the two gyms). Hosting prom in both of the gyms will essentially be like putting on two proms at once. The dance will require two DJs instead of just one, and decorating both gyms will double the number of decorations and work.

Because they want to make the night memorable, the committee sent out three theme options to the junior and senior classes: A Night in Hollywood (a night filled with music, flashing lights, walking the red carpet, and Hollywood’s luxury), An Evening in Charleston (a Great Gatsby-like fantasy that transports students back in time to live a night in the no-

torious 1920s), and Midnight Memories (an evening that lets students reminisce over the last few years of their lives). The final theme choice is up to the junior and senior attendees.

Although Covid will place restrictions on the event, students, staff, and sponsors are hopeful about prom.

Doug Preston, a junior advisor, said, “I think that there will be a high attendance this year. We are working on getting a survey sent out to the juniors and seniors to determine who’s coming.” Students from other schools have the opportunity to attend as long as they have submitted a completed guest form (which includes a COVID symptom questionnaire). Masks will be required and refreshments will be avail-

able in a single-serve fashion at the dance.

Covid also limits students’ dining options before the dance.

Because of restaurant capacity guidelines, the number of customers who can dine in is small. Most restaurants in Weld County are at 50% capacity due to Covid-19. Students should plan on making reservations depending on where they dine and should be ready for limited options.

Covid-19 has canceled or postponed many high school activities that students look forward to attending. This year students, staff, and parents are staying hopeful as they continue to make plans for prom 2021. *If you are a junior or senior student who would like to help plan the 2021 prom, feel free to reach out to Mr. Preston or let your advisor know.*

Athletes looking forward to spring sports

Sports seasons C and D within reach dakotabraucher staffreporter Spring is coming up fast, and its arrival brings another season of Eaton High School sports.

Sports, being a big part of Eaton High School’s culture, are a big deal for the community.

Not just the athletes, but the parents, teachers, and other students as well. Due to the COVID pandemic, spring sports seasons were cancelled in the previous year, which has caused many athletes to get excited for their upcoming season. The only EHS sport in Season C is volleyball, which normally takes place in the fall, and the three sports starting in Season D include tennis, baseball, and track.

Eaton volleyball starts on March 1, and the championship is on May 1. This is much different than the usual volleyball season because they usually start around the same time school starts. Many volleyball athletes have adapted to the movement of their season by

playing club in the offseason.

Volleyball player Rylee Martin (23) said, “A lot of us play club, and the club season is happening right now. A lot of us also play basketball, so some of the girls won’t be able to make it to the first game.” Even with these obstacles, many girls are ready to take on the season with full force.

On April 26, the high school baseball season begins. Under the coaching of Todd Hernandez, the baseball team is going to be a big threat this year.

Hernandez said, “Obviously, not playing last spring was difficult. I felt we had the makings of a state title team (much like this year), but we were unable to show that on the field. I think that is going to allow us to focus a little bit more on the day-to-day things and not take the game for granted.”

Many athletes are hungry to get back out there and compete after not being able to do so last year. This, like Hernandez said, can be a big motivator for

great things to come. Some key players that will help lead this baseball team include seniors Ryan Ure, Logan Moser, and Cole Shumacher.

Along with baseball, track will start on April 26.. This, being much later than the usual season, sends the state tournament back to the end of June.

Head Coach Jaryn Guerra said, “I am nervous because I feel like the lack of momentum from last season’s cancellation paired with the fact that we have to run well into the summer is going to affect the team dynamic, but I also think that the most passionate athletes will show up and show out.”

There are many uncertainties going into the season, but one thing for sure is that the people that love their sport will show up to work every day.

Some athletes that will be big threats this year are Scott Grable (21), Joseph Sisneros (22), Andie Rasmussen (24), Logan Gullett (23), and many more.

The last Eaton High School

spring sport starting soon is tennis. Also starting on the 26th, this tennis season will be one of a kind. Coach Michael Brisendine said, “This will be the first time starting this late, but the girls are looking forward to practicing and playing in warmer weather.”

This is the case for some athletes, and can increase performance for this season.

Brisendine also said, “We’ve

been hitting and playing a lot since June.”

The girls are very ready for this year, and will prove a big challenge to the other teams.

All sports this year will look a little different. Through the uncertainties, each coach and athlete has had time to prepare and get ready for the competition. This spring will be one to remember.

Class of 2021 is off to college Seniors start to carve out the paths for their future maddiefisher staffreporter The 2020-2021 school year is coming to an end and the seniors have started to plan their future after high school. Students have already planned out the colleges they would like to attend, what they want to be, and where they want to go. The 2021 class has come a long way and they are now starting a new chapter in their lives. Several seniors are prepared for their future and some are even ready to break out of their comfort zones, such as Sarah’Cate Ogden (21). She said, “I am going to miss my friends dearly and I will miss some things about my life right now, but overall I am excited for college.”

Nakiaya Kuskie (21) recently signed with Doane University in Nebraska for basketball. She has played on the varsity team since freshman year and is the shooting guard. Nakaiya has made it to the final four and has broken three highschool records. She plans on majoring in Psychology and becoming a Psychiatrist.

Delaney Ochsner (21) signed with Western Colorado University in Gunnison. She signed for volleyball and wants to study Biology to become a sonographer. Ben Williams (21) decided on Montana State University and is going to major in Fish and Wildlife management. He then wants to become a wildlife biologist.

Sydney Carlson (21) plans on going to Aims Community College to get a radiation technician’s associate’s degree to become a radiation therapist.

Her other plan would also be to go to a university and obtain her bachelor’s degree and also pursue a career in radiation therapy. Sydney Leffler (21) signed with Colorado Mesa

University for volleyball. Her position is outside and she is the captain of the high school team. Sydney has received an all-conference and had an allstate honorable mention in 2019. She is going to play indoor and beach volleyball while majoring in biology.

Marco Rodriguez (21) plans on being an Infantryman in the Marine Corps. He wants to serve and defend the country and is excited about boot camp and traveling the world.

Liam Hernandez (21) is also going into the Marine Corps for at least four years to follow the footsteps of his dad and grandpa. While in the corps he wants to become a diesel mechanic. Grace Smith (21) wants to become a Spanish teacher and spend lots of time studying abroad.

Emma Blaskowski (21) plans on going to the University of Kansas to study sports management with the combination of the pre-law program or a business degree. Her goal is to be a sports lawyer or an agent.

Mackenna Dalton (21) wants to go to Grand Canyon University in Arizona to get a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She wants to then be on a medical mission team. Jennifer Jarnagin (21) plans on going to the Colorado School of Mines in Golden to major in chemical engineering.

Evan Gesick (21) plans on going to Hope International University in California on a cross country and track scholarship. He wants to get a business and management degree which he plans on using to own or manage a large business. If not, he has a backup plan of being an electrician.

Miranda Crisp (21) has the plan to go to Laramie County Community College to study

Agribusiness and then transfer to Texas Tech or Tarleton State.

At one of those, she plans on majoring in agricultural education with an agribusiness emphasis. Her goal is to be an agriculture teacher at a secondary school. Kylie Kayser (21) has her heart set on Oklahoma State University and wants to major in Agriculture Communications with Agriculture Business. Becca Doughty (21) is going to enroll in the Coast Guard and she wants to see where it takes her.

Jadon Johnson (21) plans on going to the University of Pittsburgh to study pre-law.

Then he plans on using that to be an activist for civil rights.

Catelyn Adams (21) wants to go to Northern Arizona University or Colorado State University but then wants to become a missionary nurse or pediatric nurse.

Tanner True (21) has recently signed with Chadron State University in Nebraska for football. He plans on playing football there and majoring in biology for his undergraduate. After that, he wants to get into Physician’s Assistant school and become a physician’s assistant.

Scott Grable (21) also recently signed for track and field at Western Colorado University. With their futures planned out, the seniors look forward to life after high school. Other students are going to miss high school and all the memories.

Kyleigh Kieler (21) said, “Winnie-the-Pooh said it the best when he said ‘how lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.’ But the end of one thing is only the beginning of another and even though I will miss what was, I will look forward to what will be.”

The backbone of Eaton High School Meet the faces of the front office jacksontaggart staffreporter The first faces students see in a school are those that work at the front office, so making sure schools get the right representatives is key to a welcoming environment.

Eaton found the perfect women for the job over 15 years ago and the students and teachers love them. Lori Selby and Kim Carey are the secretaries who work in the front office at Eaton High School.

Lori Selby started working in the front office in the fall of 2005 and has worked in that position since then. Selby

previously worked in Eaton School District as a substitute teacher for three years at the elementary school and wanted to help the Eaton community as much as possible.

Selby said, “I love being in the community because I get to know so many community members and I live way outside of town so this has been a great way to connect with the community.” Selby enjoys sewing and quilting and other hobbies that include hand work but her favorite thing to do is spending time with her family and her kids’ families.

This is Kim Carey’s 20th year working at Eaton High School

and she’s loved every second of it. Carey said, “My favorite part about working here are the students and staff. I love the social environment here and everybody I work with.” Carey enjoys physical activities. She did CrossFit and started making a gym in her basement to stay active after the local CrossFit building shut down.

She enjoys reading and traveling and her favorite hobby is spending time with her family.

Carey said, “I love sitting out on the patio in the summer with my family and talking about life and spending time together.”

COVID-19 vaccine comes to Eaton EHS teachers receive vaccine

The COVID-19 vaccine has been distributed to individual healthcare workers, senior citizens, high-risk individuals, teachers, and licensed childcare workers.There are three phases for the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, and it is broken down into groups in winter, spring and summer. 1A was the first round of the COVID vaccine to get distributed, and it was given to high-risk healthcare workers and individuals.

1B.1 was meant for Colorado citizens 70 years old or older and moderate-risk health care workers and first responders, and 1B.2 was specifically for Coloradans 65-69 years of age, Pre K-12 teachers and staff, and childcare workers.

Some of Eaton’s own staff received the COVID-19 vaccine including Derek Weigle, Jim Corbett, Demi Ball, and Molly Maguire. The teachers who did

decide to get the vaccine don’t regret getting it. Weigle said, “I wasn’t so much worried about me getting COVID, but I was worried that if I had it, I would give it to some of my older family members that would be more at risk. I really did it to protect them.” His decision was influenced by the safety of his family. Everyone had different reasons on why they wanted to take the vaccine, and Ball’s reason was her health.

Ball said, “I have a heart condition and I was just really terrified about getting COVID, because there is a decent amount of research that says that it attacks your heart cells.

Basically, if I got COVID...I have a bad [heart] valve that doesn’t work very good, so I would have to get it replaced.”

She got the vaccine to protect herself from COVID to try and prevent other possible issues in the future.

Maguire was excited about the science of the vaccine,

and she already had COVID and didn’t want to have to go through that again. She has already been sick and she likes the idea of not having to worry about getting it again. Maguire said, “I did get COVID in November and I personally know a couple of people who got COVID and then had it again. I know that you get some level of immunity from actually getting it (COVID), but the immunity is not that great it doesn’t seem like. A lot of the research around the vaccine showed that the immunity from the vaccine is better.”

Jim Corbett was also confident in the vaccine and the research that went into it, saying “I have confidence in both the science and mathematics.”

He felt reassured when getting the vaccine, and he also got it for the safety of his family. He said, “My mother is 74 and she is taking care of my daughter, who is six months old right now, so my wife can work. Both

her and I have had the vaccine so we can not only protect ourselves health-wise, but also maintain the scenario where we can work.” These teachers had personal reasons for getting the vaccine, to protect themselves and the others around them, allowing them to live their life as safely as possible.

Colorado is currently still in phase 1B.2, but will soon be in phase 1B.3, where the vaccine will be distributed to frontline

workers and people who are 16-64 years of age, with two or more high risk conditions, by the end of winter. By spring people ages 60 to 64, people who have high risk conditions, and workers for state government and local government will be in line to receive the vaccine. By the time summer comes around, the general public will be able to receive the vaccine.

According to the CDC, Mental Health of America, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, the mental health of youth has dwindled drastically in the last year. 2020 was a rollercoaster for everyone. From the global pandemic to the political uproars, emotions were low for the majority of teens. Data shows that 9.7% of youth in the U.S. have severe major depression, compared to 9.2% in last year’s dataset. This rate was highest among youth who identify as more than one race, at 12.4%.

Not only that, but the data shows that youth between the ages of 11-17 have been more likely than any other age group to show severe symptoms of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic (Mental Health of America).

A survey sent to the EHS students and staff helped the Red Ink understand the mental health at EHS after COVID-19.

Students were asked to rate their mental health on a 1-10 scale with one being great mental health and ten being relatively poor mental health over the last year. Exactly 50% of the respondents were between 1-5, the other 50% were between

6-10. The largest percentage of participants, 15.2%, expressed their mental health as one, meaning since the pandemic, their mental health has been favorable.

The second highest, 13.3%, was an eight, suggesting somewhat poor mental health. Interestingly enough, many of the students and staff at EHS expressed that COVID did not have a major effect on their mindset and attitude.

Although this may be true, every student had to deal with the hardships of the pandemic and the year of 2020 itself.

Life for every student in high school had been affected significantly from the changes in lifestyle since the pandemic.

Teenagers lost valuable experiences and had to push through school and life as a consequence of it all. Austin Sutton (22) said, “From July of 2019 to only April of 2020 my family had lost 3 people due to cancer. School kept pushing on, without any sort of backing off with work. I fell behind at the end of sophomore and almost failed. I was struggling to pull myself out of that rabbit hole on top of all the family stress.

Students may feel that teachers are not necessarily helping them cope with the abrupt change in their lives, but teachers also have similar feelings toward 2020.

Math teacher Kayla Johnson said, “At school, it takes a lot of energy and passion to develop and facilitate an interesting and engaging math lesson. I feel like my ‘energy bar’ has been on low all school year long, and I see it impacting my students’ learning sometimes too. I know I can’t always expect them (the students) to be the best versions of themselves like I normally do if I’m not the best version of myself either.

Then it all cycles back - I see that I’m not doing my best, and it makes me sad to know that my ‘why’ as a teacher is not evident on a daily basis.” The pandemic has been just as hard on the teachers as it has been on the students.

“What keeps me going this last year is what always keeps me going- my family and the students I teach,” history teacher Andrew Jorgensen said.

Last year brought more than just a pandemic. It brought protests, political controversy, and much more throughout the nation and

world. Kids in high school had to discover ways of coping and understanding a divided world in front of them. “Throughout this pandemic I saw many people I liked become hypocritical and it exposed they only care about their own image and power.

This has gotten me to begin applying ideas I like from all over the political spectrum and am creating my own ideology,” Micheal Howard (22) said. Especially in a town so small and impersonal, it was hard to see different perspectives, and even harder to understand them. Teenagers had to watch a divided nation, in midst of a pandemic, and attempt to make sense of it all. Teachers also struggled with understanding the nation before them. Online teacher Deirdre White said, “The Capitol riots undid me. I wept the day they stormed our most precious American institution. I have found it so hard to believe that people are actually so angry.

incomparable. Every life in the nation has been altered as a result.

Jorgensen saw that fear and anger in the students during the election. “So many of our students have shown negativity towards one another based off of a Red candidate and a Blue candidate.

I don’t understand why so many of our students are invested in national politics to the point they feel the need to be nasty towards students who have different political views. Go make a real difference in your local community and stop worrying so much about national politics,” he said. The students have witnessed several historical events in the last year, and for some, witnessing history has become exhausting. Many students wish things were back to normal.

Everything bad comes with some good. Of course, 2020 had a lot of bad, but according to the students, the year as a whole was right in the middle. 53.2% of the students who took the survey expressed that the last year teetered between “good” and “bad”. Joseph Sisneros (22) said, “Although the pandemic affected everyday life for most people, everything wasn’t horrible. Being able to spend

quality time with my family and being isolated from others has allowed me to have time to figure out myself and what I want to do in the future.” An anonymous student also said, “There were a lot of good things that came into the world and the community during 2020.

I feel like the community really united as one to help one another and I think we all really discovered the true meaning of what a community/family is.”

Teenagers nationwide are struggling with their mental health after the insane year of 2020. Although several students explained their mental health was doing relatively well, 50% of the students recognized the toll the pandemic took on their minds. After everything that happened in 2020, it is important for students to take care of one another and appreciate the little things in life. An anonymous student said, “The pandemic showed me that I need to live my life to the fullest and not take it for granted like I have before.”

According to the data collected by the Red Ink, the majority of the students explain their mental health as relatively good.

Although this may be true, 50% of the students are still struggling.

Half of the student body and staff have witnessed a change to their mental health and that percentage alone is significant. 27.7% of EHS students said their grades and school work took the biggest hit from the pandemic. Jaeli Lewis (23) said, “All the teachers and everyone talks about how crazy the world is, but they’re still treating this year like it’s normal.

We don’t get any slack in classes about missing and being quarantined.” Online student, Jessica Guerra (21), shares the same emotion towards school work and the impact of the last year. “I’ve never really struggled this much in school before. I’m online this year and I’ve been behind in my classes for almost the whole school year,”

Wearing a mask while playing close contact sports, like basketball, seems like a good idea to stop spreading Covid.

My favorite novels When I was in sixth grade I became obsessed with reading. I would devour anything I could get my hands on. From newspapers to random paperbacks, words filled my time. I especially had profound interest in newspapers. Whether I understood what I was reading or not, I enjoyed waking up in the morning and placing the thin gray paper between my fingers. Even when I was a kid, I was taught the importance of words. Especially the words on the gray pieces of paper.

Quickly, that enjoyment grew into a love and I began reading everything. Magazines, newspapers, and novels were my main focus in every aspect of my life. From there, I began writing. With my mother as my only audience, I would write fictional stories and fact news articles, which is how I have come to this today.

I now spend the majority of my time in the newsroom getting as many stories out to the student body as possible.

It has truly become my passion. From a young age, we are all told that when we find our passions, we must hold onto them and share it with others in hopes they discover theirs as well. So with that, I am going to share with you the novels that sparked my love for writing. With various authors and genres, the books I am going to mention have changed my outlook on life and writing.

A classic, The Green Mile by Stephen King tells the story of a man on death row from the perspective of supervisor Paul Edgecomb. Inmate John Coffey will make you question everything you know about society, and people in general. This

book had me crying, laughing, and gasping the entire time.

King does not disappoint with this riveting and emotional story.

Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak explains the life of five orphaned boys. The Dunbar brothers live alone in a house full of chaos and a strange form of love. When their father returns after leaving them years ago, their world quickly falls to pieces. But Clay, the quiet and reserved Dunbar brother, decides to build a bridge. A bridge that risks all he knows, but also has the potential to fix everything. Clay and Dunbars’ story will leave you with a new perspective of love and brotherhood. Written beautifully, I genuinely believe this book will change the life of anyone who decides to open the first page.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is a book unlike any other I have ever read. Cadence Sinclair was born into a wealthy, seeming perfect family. Every summer, the Sinclairs visit their family’s private island and spend three months isolated with each other. It wasn’t until one summer where it all fell apart. As Cadence tries her best to overcome her life challenges and attempts to remember that fateful summer, the novel will have you questioning your own morals. Not only that, but by the last page, you will have encountered the painful proof of consequence. This book will leave you shocked and potentially in tears.

Here, I have shared some small pieces of my heart.

I hope these books help you to discover something within yourself like they did me.

Staff Editoral There are two things that should never be combined together: sports and masks. Playing sports is already tiring on its own, but combined with wearing a mask, it becomes nearly unbearable. It’s like trying to run a mile with half of a lung - it’s doable but very inconvenient. The first season of winter sports to face the Covid 19 pandemic has arrived, and it is more challenging than it has ever been. Sports like basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, and many others are facing a huge change. Because of the Colorado mask mandate, CHSAA says that masks should be worn while playing indoor sports unless an athlete has a medical exemption.

Wearing masks on the sidelines and in the stands is totally understandable, but when athletes are asked to wear them during competetition, problems start to form.

However, once the players start coming in very close contact with each other (all while passing around a ball that both teams have touched with their hands), it seems like a mask would do very little to protect the athletes.

Also, many masks fall below the nose with little ease, so many athletes are still breathing on each other. Not only does this appear illogical, but it also feels unfair, as none of the outdoor athletes have to wear masks during competition. Although Covid doesn’t spread as easily outside, it can still spread. Coaches and fans of outdoor sports are still required to wear a mask in order to prevent the spread of Covid, but the athletes haven’t had to. If this is to make the outdoor athlete’s lives more comfortable, then why doesn’t this apply to indoor athletes as well?

Even the World Health Organization recommends not wearing a mask during exercise, so why is it that indoor athletes have to wear them? Gasping for air

through a hot and sweaty mask is something that no athletes should have to do. It makes performing much harder than it should be, and can detrimentally hinder the performance of athletes who have breathing issues like asthma.

At least athletes are given some slack, as mask breaks are set in place for athletes who compete with a mask on. This is nice, but it can interrupt the rhythm of a competition like basketball. If a team is gaining momentum and then a mask break occurs, all of that momentum could be lost.

Although wearing a mask while playing sports is uncomfortable and annoying, it isn’t impossible, and there is nothing anyone can do to change the rules.

Wearing masks allows athletes to keep playing the sports that they love, despite the fact that it may seem unfair and irrational. Those who can rise up to the challenge and still play well with a mask are going to succeed. The Covid pandemic has presented many challenges throughout the last year, and wearing masks while playing sports is just another hill that athletes will have to climb in order to be successful.

When Swift was 15 years old, she signed to Big Machine Records. Until she recorded ‘Lover’, her music has been under Big Machine’s contract.

Unfortunately, Swift’s deal did not include complete ownership of her music she wrote and produced.

Hits like “Shake it Off” and “22”, are not owned by Swift as

she only receives a percentage of their revenue.

In 2018 Swift signed with Universal Music Group prior to her first album she’d entirely own.

Big Machine sold part of her discography to music manager Scooter Braun without her knowledge. Swift has been bullied by Braun for years, as Braun profited from music Swift created. Going “mad” for March Madness NCAA sets dates for the long-awaited event

Men’s basketball has been in session for awhile now, and everyone is patiently waiting for March Madness. The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) has confirmed dates for all the rounds in March.

Ben Richter (22) said, “I look forward to watching the competitive play that always comes with March Madness.”

March Madness is planning on starting March 18 until the 5th of April. There are a total of 68 teams that participate in March Madness, and everyone

has that one team they want to win the whole tournament.

Will Grable (23) said, “I want Baylor to win it all. Baylor because they have good players and are well-coached.” In the regular season Baylor has a win-to-loss ratio of 17-0, and 9-0 in conference. Baylor has not lost a game yet in this regular season, and are number one in the Big 12 standings.

Looking forward to the team they want to win makes it even more interesting.

According to Bleacher Report, March Madness is the 14th biggest sports event. Dirk Duncan (22) said, “During March Madness I look forward to all of the betting and the Fi-

nal Four. People bet crazy kinds of money for games and it’s fun to watch. The Final Four are the best four teams left and it is always good basketball.” The Final Four is always exciting to watch and see who could be the champions, and just see who the best teams are.

There are plenty of things that all the fans of March Madness don’t want to happen. There are concerns that Covid will ruin the whole thing but those concerns are very little. Richter (22) said, “One thing I don’t want to happen is to watch a team get eliminated because someone gets Covid.”

Having fans is something all athletes love about their sport,

and just having that support all around them. Richter (22) said, “I feel like March Madness will look a lot different considering there will be little to no fans.

Fans are a huge part of college basketball and can change the game.” There is always that special feeling that people get when they are playing their sport and just hear how much support they have. Duncan (22) said, “For me personally playing with fans is 100 times better than playing in a “dead gym” with no fans. I’ve played in both a gym with fans and a gym with no fans this year due to Covid, and playing with that extra background noise is a lot better than no noise.”

Coffee, coffee, coffee. The drink that provides energy and still manages to taste and smell delicious. From the iced latte to a hot mocha, the diversity that is available is amazing.

Different coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants provide different syrups, foams, roasts, and beans to make their coffee unique and dynamic. Places like the basic Starbucks to the crazy Dutch Brothers are some of the many fan favorites shared by the student body in Eaton High School.

The coffee connoisseurs around Eaton have some strong opinions about their coffee and how they like it.

Delaney Ocschner (21) said, “My go-to coffee drink is the Christmas Morning Chai with caramel drizzle and a soft top from Dutch Bros.” With what feels like thousands of flavor

combinations that are offered at Dutch, Ochsner strongly believes that Dutch Bros is the superior coffee shop. She said, “Dutch Bros tops Human Bean and Starbucks any day of the week, mostly because of the quality and prices.” The average medium drink at 16 ounces and averages around $3.50 at Dutch compared to Starbucks where their medium is 16 ounces as well, but the price averages around 5 to 6 dollars. “Coffee never ceases to fill me with joy after the first sip.,” said Oschner.

Hopping on the trend Josie Roselle (22) would also have to agree that Dutch is the best coffee shop. “My favorite coffee shop to go to is Dutch because there are so many delicious drinks to choose from and it’s so fun to try different things.” With many little coffee shops around town the chain companies are taking the

lead because of their fun atmosphere and sweet drinks, but Roselle said “I also love Ten24 coffee here in Eaton because of the atmosphere.” Having a shop that is appealing to the eye really draws in customers. Roselle said, “I prefer iced drinks for the most part but depending on the weather I will drink hot coffee.” Especially in the cold months, hot drinks are essential to staying warm.

According to Avalon Betters (23) no matter what the weather is she will always stick to her go to drink. She said, “I always get my drink either iced or blended no matter the weather… hot coffee just isn’t my thing.” Betters also agrees that Dutch Bros is the best coffee shop in Northern Colorado. She said, “It’s pretty close to me and I love having a variety of options to choose from, even though I usually just stick

with my normal drink every day.” Having a regular coffee order is something that is very common because sometimes going outside of the box is just not the move. Betters said “My go-to coffee drink from Dutch is a Golden Eagle with extra caramel drizzle. There is nothing fancy about it, it’s just my new normal lately.”

He said, “Starbucks provides a unique experience where you can drink coffee and hang out.

Lady Reds crushing the competition Girls swim team wins coach’s favorite meet maddiefisher staffreporter On Friday, Feb. 19, Eaton High School’s girl’s swim team came up victorious in their home meet against Holyoke High School with a final score of 89-81. The Lady Reds are crushing the competition this season with Lexi Bruntz (22), Caitlin Morgan (23), and Kaiya Sinkler (23) as the top score holders.

There are also a couple freshmen that joined the team this year that have a lot of potential.

Coach Hattie Carlson said, “Andie Rasmussen (24) has a lot of talent for only diving for a few weeks and is also a freestyle swimmer.”

In the girls 200-yard medley relay Eaton placed in the top three, with first place including Aubrey Ledall (23), Addie Burke (22), Kaiya Sinkler (23), and Cadynce Campbell (21) with a time of 2:31.48. This past meet at home was Coach Carlson’s favorite swim meet this season.

The conference is different this year compared to others with several small teams and one larger team. With the smaller number of teams, this means that the Reds either crush their competition or their competition crushes them. Coach Carlson said, “To not know what the outcome is, it’s a lot more fun.”

With a population of 2,484 people, Holyoke has a swim team relatively close in size to Eaton’s swim team, so they are a perfect match to compete against each other. In that case, the two teams usually score a couple of points within each other.

In the girls 200 yard free, Lexi Bruntz took first place with a time of 2:07.92 and the girl behind her at a 2:14.57.

She said, “Holyoke is always good competition because their team is about the same size as ours, so the duals are always pretty close. But as a team, we did really well. We have a few new girls this year who have never swum before and they are doing amazing.”

As a new swimmer, Rasmussen said, “I am really liking swimming. It’s really nice to be able to try a new sport and to learn a new skill. I think my favorite event so far is the 50 freestyle but I also really like the 100 breaststroke.” The upperclassmen are very helpful when it comes to encouraging and welcoming the freshmen girls. They spread positivity and motivate the girls during workouts to help improve for

competitions.

“The competition was good.

They had some fast swimmers, but we weren’t scared. As a team, we swam really well. Lots of people had best times and fought hard until the end to win the races,” said Caitlin Morgan, who also held first place in the girl’s 200 yard individual medley with a final time of 2:33.35.

The swim team also consists of divers and Kaiya Sinkler is one of the top, receiving first place for the girl’s one meter diving with the final score of 159.00. Once again, Lexi Bruntz received first place in the girls 100 yard freestyle with a final time of 58.33.

Coach Hattie has been coaching at Eaton High School for a long time and loves to watch the girls grow throughout the seasons.

Carlson said, “It was really fun to actually see the girls get out there and race somebody who is close to them.” Eaton had a lot of first places and the Lady Reds won the coach’s favorite swim meet, which always makes a great victory.

Lady Reds take win over Liberty Common Girls basketball bounces back with win after a loss to University jadenstone sportseditor

Eaton girls’ basketball bounces back after a tough loss to University High School with a win against Liberty Common. Abiah Randel (23) said, “It’s important that we bounce back because it allows us to perform better than we did in the game before.” The Reds took their first loss of the season against the Bulldogs with a score of 56-42, but quickly turned around with a win. On Feb. 26, the lady Reds took on the Liberty Common Eagles back on their home floor and won 44-36. Ahana Leffler (22) said, “Our biggest strength as a team is how close we are together and we know we can depend on each other no matter what.”

Ahana Leffler (22) led the team in scoring with 13 points followed by Abiah Randel (23) with seven. Ran-

del shot 100 percent from the floor going three for three.

The Reds jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter where they put up 18 points to the Eagles’ 11. They didn’t stop after that and they kept the lead throughout the whole game. After the game, Leffler said, “Our team had good communication and drive, but there are still things we need to work on.”

Defensively, the Reds had 19 steals as a team. Jenni Jarnagin (21) and Abiah Randel both had four steals in the game. Ahana Leffler and Blayke Duncan (23) had three steals each as well. Randel said, “I think every time someone on the team gets a steal or defensive stop it helps the team’s energy and effort on both ends of the court.”

The girls cleaned up the boards as well last night with 29 total rebounds, and 11 of them on the offensive side.

Catelyn Adams (21) had nine rebounds in the game, followed by Jisell Chumacero (21) and Jenni Jarnagin with four each.

With two games remaining, the 9-1 Reds will take on the number two team in the state, the Platte Valley Broncos. The Broncos are 8-1 with their only loss to The Vanguard School. The Reds will travel to Platte Valley for the game on March 3. Leffler said, “We can improve by making sure we have intent with everything we do in practice because it will carry over to games.”

After facing off against Platte Valley, the Reds will return back home to take on the Beetdiggers from Brush on March 5 for their last game of the regular season. Leffler said, “We always need to look forward and be ready for next week’s games.” Brush is also a very tough team with a record

of 9-2. Their two losses were to Holyoke and Platte Valley. “I think that we need to be mentally strong to finish the season out on top because physically we are there, we are in good shape, it’s just about moving on to the next play,” Randel said.

Wrapping up the regular season, the Reds will take on playoffs led by their four

seniors: Nakiaya Kuskie (21), Catelyn Adams (21), Jenni Jarnagin (21), and Jisell Chumacero (21). Last season the Reds made it all the way to the final four when their season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so they look forward to making a redemptive run at the state title to finish off this season.

Boys basketball loses to University The Reds fall short to rival University Bulldogs ryleemartin featureeditor

The Reds fell short against the University Bulldogs on Wednesday, Feb. 24 with a final score of 46-62. So far this season, the Reds have had a hard time gaining energy and executing against tough teams.

The leading scorers for the Reds were Walker Martin (23) with 19 points, Jaden Stone (22) with seven points and Jordan Sidwell (23) with five points and a 100% field goal average.

A hard start for the Reds put them in a deep hole after the first quarter. Martin said, “It’s super hard to come back from a low-scoring game because it’s hard to rally the team back together.” Leading the Reds in rebounds was Martin again with seven, then Stone with four, and Zac Grable (23) with four.

It is never fun to lose a tough game, let alone if it’s against a rival and at home. On the bright side, Scott Grable (21) scored his 1000th point

in his high school career. This is a huge accompishment as no other athlete has achieved 1,000 career points in the past 12 years. S. Grable has been a key player for the Reds as he has been loyal to the basketball program since he was a freshman. Also, having his dad as his head coach for all four years has been a blessing as he has been able to watch Scott grow as a player underneath his coaching. S. Grable also has two brothers, Zac Grable and Will Grable (23) playing on the court with him. The twins said, “We are super proud of our brother. He is a great leader and is always leading by example. We are so glad that we have gotten to play with our brother for the past two years and we hope that we finish out the season with a bang.” Strong leaders are never easy to come by and S. Grable is a great example of showing a “We over Me” mentality. Z. Grable said, “I am super proud of Scott. He has been working super hard

and he deserves it.”

Some players like Sidwell and Ben Richter (22) are great examples of being small but mighty. The two juniors are selfless and bring great feisty energy to the basketball court. Richter said, “Wednesday’s game didn’t go as planned.

We struggled on the offensive side and our shots wouldn’t drop. But honestly I am proud of the guys for not playing for the scoreboard. Coach always talks about not feeling sorry for ourselves and to play for pride.”

Having a positive outlook on tough games is a hard thing to get a grasp of and Richter sets a great example of how to take the high road. Leadership can come in many shapes and sizes and the Reds show a great selection of different leaders.

Richter said, “As we move forward into the next game against Liberty Commons, we want to move the ball and work together as a team to get a solid team win.” Sidwell is a great addition to the Reds as well because he

is very selfless and a great utility player. Sidwell said, “We’ve gone through some struggles the past few games after starting the season off so well against Highland. Wednesday was a little rough, we got out of our groove and didn’t make the shots that we should have.”

Coach Dean Grable also made the executive decision to pull up Cole Lockey (23) as a new varsity player. Lockey should add some positive height underneath the hoop.

Reflecting on the University game, most would say it was an inaccurate representation of what the boys can really do. Coming together as a

team will be crucial for the boys as they enter into the playoff season.

Wrestling is victorious at Patriot Cross Over Dual Reds battle Valley with Regionals and State around the corner

Eaton’s 2021wrestling season has been off to a stellar start.

Practices began on Jan. 25 with competitions beginning the first of February. Since then, the Reds have battled teams from all over the state. Recently, the Reds hosted the Patriot Cross Over Dual against their rival: Valley.

The 2021wrestling season has had many adaptations due to COVID-19 for the Reds. “It has kind of been a headache,” Head Coach Tony Mustari said.

“The steps and things we have to keep track of, making sure kids are wearing their masks when they are not wrestling, and social distancing when we are on the bench at opposing schools or other places. It just makes it hard and adds to the list of things we have to keep track of during the season.”

Even throughout all the difficulties of COVID-19, the wrestling team was able to celebrate senior night on Feb. 23.

For the 2021 season, the Reds have four seniors including Tanner True (21), Cael Jordan (21), Cade Mawson (21), and Zach Lampe (21).

Jordan said wrestling “teaches you hard work,” and his advice to younger wrestlers is, “It’s worth it in the end, but it’s

pretty rough at the start.” Jordan wrestles in the 182 pound division. Against Valley, Jordan wrestled Viking wrestler Jeff Gore. Jordan overthrew Gore for the win.

The Patriot Cross Over Dual brought the Reds’ rival to their hometown for a matchup of last year’s State Champions.

Eaton overcame the Vikings with a toppling score of 41 to 33.

Leading the Reds to their victory of 41 team points were wrestlers Tanner True (21), Cade Mawson (21), Cael Jordan (21), Ryan Dirksen (22), Alex Castaneda (22), Morgan Tribbett (23), and Jackson Tribbett (24).

Wrestling in the 285 pound division, True has a perfect record of 14-0 for his 2021 season and is ranked first in the 3A 285 pound weight division.

Castaneda is currently ranked third in the 126 pound weight division and Jordan is ranked second for the 152 pound division.

Prior to the Reds’ battle against Valley, they were ranked third behind Valley and Pagosa Springs.

Regionals will take place March 5 through 6. Head Coach Tony Mustari said, “Instead of splitting up the tournament within two days, cer-

tain weights are finishing up in one day.”

The top two wrestlers of every weight division will have the honor of representing their team in the State Championships. State will be March 12 and 13 for all Colorado wrestling divisions with an eightman bracket for every weight division. The weight divisions will be divided between the two days of the tournament and each one will finish in one day.

As the wrestlers tackle Regionals, Eaton has high hopes for the end of the 2021 season, especially since 2020 ended in a championship for the Reds.

Along with the team’s success in 2020, Dirksen won his weight division to take home a state title. As for the 2021 season, Dirksen has won all but one of his matches, leaving him with a 14-1 record, and he is currently ranked 2nd in the state in the 3A 152 pound division.

“I definitely think we are capable of winning State again,” Dirksen said. To get to State, Dirksen said wrestlers need to focus on the “quality of their wrestling.” He said, “It is stepping up and seeing who has
