Jazz band finishes off the year strong Combo and Ensemble close the door with a stellar performance

As one of the final events to occur in the historic Eaton High School Auditorium, the Jazz Bands made the most of it. Monday, April 25, the Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble played for the last time this school year. Their concert took place at the Eaton High School Auditorium at 7:00 pm.

It was an all around sad feeling, knowing that it would be the last time the seniors would be playing for the jazz bands together. Jack Dalton (24) said, “Everyone was very proud of themselves and their peers, but it was also a very sad feeling of playing with the seniors for the last time.”

Jazz Combo kicked the night off by playing three songs with many outstanding solos.

In their first song, “Autumn Leaves” by Joseph Kosma, the band contributed one solo from Mick Mccaskill (23).

Going straight into their next song, the upbeat, “702 Shuffle”

by Bret Zvaeck, had special guest artists from band director and teacher Logan Doddridge’s band called Choice City Seven (CC7).

Doddridge said, “For me it was cool that we got to collaborate and was really special because I kinda got to share my life with the kids a little bit more. They got to see the pro-

fessional groups that I play in and got to be around the professional musicians that I get to be around a lot. And I got to play so that was kind of cool.

It was fun to share in that sort of fashion. Also it is also really cool to look at the seniors and see how far they have come.

Back in August we couldn’t even play our instruments at all and to see what they did Monday night was truly amazing.”

On top of that, “702 Shuffle” presented the talents of many young artists with solos from Mackinze Hays (25), Callie Zacharias (25), Alexyz Hernandez (23), and Erik Montague (22). Jazz Combo finished off their night with “Groove Merchant” by Jerome Richardson, which had solos from Cameron Faust (22) and Clayton Heid (25).

CC7 played a big role in this concert and was very important to Doddridge. He said, “My band is made up of a bunch of educators, so it was really easy

for them to say yes to helping out and inspiring other kids.

They love doing that kind of thing where we do an outreach concert. That is kinda why we formed that group. Our group isn’t going to go on a World Tour anytime soon but we’re really passionate about playing for other kids and inspiring young musicians.”

After the Jazz Combo finished up and a short intermission, the Jazz Ensemble band left it all out there with an amazing performance of six songs. “Megalovania” by Toby Fox, kicked off their concert with a couple of solos from Even Reichel (23) and Morelya Lopez (22). The Jazz Ensemble went through their night with other songs like “Sweet Thunder” by Duke Ellington, and “Strasbourg St. Denis” by Roy Hargrave. The song’s solos were played by Paige Davis (24) and Montague in “Sweet Thunder” and Alex Rumley (23), Faust, and a CC7 guest,

John McKay. “Don’t Push” by Ryan Middagh was the band’s fourth song where they lit up the stage with a more upbeat song with a couple more solos from Gilbert Feldpausch (24) and Madilyn Campbell (23).

“El Abrazo” followed that with Bryce Smith (22) moving the audience with a beautiful solo.

The Jazz Ensemble went out with a bang, performing, “Sing Sing Sing” by Louis Prima, and Charlotte Reynolds (22) and Abby Whitaker (22) drummed together in their final song together as seniors. Smith also played another solo on the saxophone to end the great night of music.

Seniors have worked hard all four years just to get to where they are today. After the concert Reynolds said, “I am feeling sad to leave this chapter of my life behind and I am very blessed to have had a great director and band members throughout these four years.”

Eaton theater says goodbye with one last play in historic auditorium ashlenlivingston staffreporter The play Game of Tiaras, written by Don Zoldis, contains Shakespeare-like tragedies, Game of Thrones plot twists, and well-known Disney princesses. Tragedy turns into uncontrollable laughter and the odd plot twists create for a very memorable play. It begins with a King who divides his kingdom between his three daughters. Cinderella, Belle, and Ellie (Snow Queen), and the three must prove their love for their father.

The play was performed Apr. 21-23 and sadly will be the last play to be held in the old high school theater. For the

seniors who have been part of theater for years, this is an especially touching time due to it being their last play. This play was even more meaningful to Kendra Hixon, the theater arts teacher and director, who has been teaching for 12 years.

Cinderella, played by Morelya Lopez (22),was excited to play a princess as well as other characters during the play. Lopez said, “You think it’d get easier each day but each day there was another reason to be nervous, but we still made it through.” Lopez, along with other princesses, were a bit nervous on the first show night but with each performance it became easier. Wray (22) played Ellie (Snow Queen). She said, “It’s genuinely the funniest play I think we’ve done so far.”

Wray had a lot of funny moments in the play, and she also has nothing to do with the copyrighted princess that builds an ice castle. Wray also said, “It sounds cliche but we really are like a big family.”

Working with other actors and spending time with each other is sure to bring people together.

Stage Manager Rinoa Womack (22) said, “You’ve got so many moving parts, actors, props, lights, and stage crew moving.” Being behind the scenes is a big role to take on and it can make or break a

show. Womack is responsible for not only the lights and props but the actors as well.

The tech crew as well as the actors have to work together in order to have a smooth production.

Game of Tiaras was a thrill-

ing mix of Disney princesses, plot twists, and classic Shakespearean tragedies.

Hixon as well as the cast and tech crew put on an amazing show to end the year with. The seniors will be dearly missed, as will the historical theater.

Aims Community College is the closest community college to Eaton, Colorado, which makes it a great option for Eaton High School graduates.

Community colleges allow students to see if they like certain majors or career paths without much cost.

There are many alternatives to four-year colleges for students after high school and although these aren’t the only options, they are the most wellknown. About 66% of high school students go to community college after high school

and only about 1% of students go into the military.

Alternative options include going directly into the workforce or attending a trade school to learn a specific skill,

which is similar to attending a community college. Students have many options these days for career paths and are able to pursue them in many ways.

“More Than My Hometown” Prom 2022 emilyhogsett featureeditor Every high schooler looks forward to a fun night of dressing up, having a nice dinner, and dancing the night away with their fellow classmates.

Themed off of Morgan Wallen’s song “More Than My Hometown,” the night had a rustic vibe. The song fit perfectly considering the students of EHS will say goodbye to their current high school as they move to the new building, and as seniors move on to their next chapter in life. The night was filled with a variety of dances and fun at the Z Ranch Event Center. The dance was followed by AfterProm at the high school where students engaged in a variety of games.

The night was casino themed, filling the school with black jack, poker, and craps along with other fun such as life-size hungry hippo, hamsterball races, and spike ball. A night spent dancing and celebrating their hometown is a memory EHS students will have forever as they step into the next chapter of their life.

Advice from the upperclassmen

Seniors who have learned the formula for success share some wisdom

logangullett staffreporter As students make their way through high school, they gain a lot of wisdom. Although the four years can go by really fast, there are many lessons to be learned. Nobody wants to learn something the hard way, so it can be very helpful when other, more experienced students, can hand down some advice to the underclassmen.

Everybody’s high school experience differs from one another, but there are certain philosophies that all upperclassmen would agree upon. In high school, and in life in general, there will always be mistakes made and regrets to be had. But with the power of hindsight, many of these faults can be avoided.

There is no easier way to make friends in high school

than getting involved. It is a manta indoctrinated into students since their freshman year by teachers and staff members, and for good reason. At Eaton High School there are a plethora of clubs, organizations, and sports to join. Golf, Cross Country, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Swimming, Track and Field, and Tennis are all of the available sports students can participate in at EHS. If athletics isn’t a huge interest, there are many clubs to join as well. FCCLA, National Honor Society, Robotics, FCS, and Key Club are just a few of many clubs students can join. something.

At the beginning of freshman year, four years can seem like an eternity; however, most seniors would agree that time passes in a blink of an eye, so make sure to take advantage of the ‘good old days.’ Joseph Sisneros (22) said, “You never know what you may be missing behind a decision you might regret later down the road. Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Take the opportunities that present themselves to you and give them a try.” Essentially, all of these seniors are suggesting to get involved, have fun, and make memories. High school only happens once, so make the absolute most of it while it lasts.

sitrative Assistant to the Principal, has been at Eaton High School for 17 years. Selby originally came to EHS after a job opportunity presented itself with a principal she knew. Her four children were graduating and getting older, so she decided to start something new.

Quickly, Selby fell in love with the office staff. “I was respected for the job I did, and this job worked great with raising kids and having a husband who traveled frequently,” she said.

In her retirement, Selby is looking forward to spending time with her amazing husband and family without thinking about work. Not only

wanted a change. She decided to stay at Eaton High because she enjoyed the job and it was a good way to fill her time as her children were graduating. “I hope to convince my husband to retire so him and I can spend our time traveling together,” she said.

Dear Class of 2022, We did it. After 12 years, we have reached the stage, we have earned a cap, and we have earned a gown. We’ve heard echoes of “2022” since we were in kindergarten. And now it is in our hands and we now face the rest of our lives.

The last four years have been quite a rollercoaster. We faced a global pandemic that immediately disrupted our sophomore year, we endured a junior year in masks and quarantines, and now we graduate in construction. Through it all, we have persevered, made some good memories, and had many great laughs.

If I wanted to give you mediocre advice, I’d tell you to be kind, to love others, and to take every opportunity you get. I’d remind you to brush your teeth, tell your parents you love them and stay organized. But, I know you’ve heard this before, and you will probably hear it all again. So I won’t burden you with listening to more advice. Instead, I’ll tell you what you all have taught me.

Twelve years with you all has taught me that everyone has their flaws, but flaws make everyone human, and therefore, beautiful. You have all taught me that no matter what “group” someone belongs in, they are still worthy of your time and attention. You have all taught me that everyone deserves a voice. I now know that there is no point in being so serious all the time. I understand how to laugh when I would refuse to previously.

I have also been taught to love everyone, because you

will never know when it will be your last chance to. I have been taught to be proud of the accomplishments of my peers because everyone’s work should be recognized. And, in this moment, I am full of pride. I am proud of every single one of you for making it this far. I am proud of you for facing the adversity and coming out successful.

Now, I say goodbye to the class that grew up with me. I say farewell to the people who shaped me into the being I am today. I tell the school I was taught in that I’m grateful for its lessons. I inform my teachers that they gave me the power to succeed.

And to the underclassmen, I say, it truly does go by quickly, so take advantage of every moment. To you, Class of 2022, I say thank you.

Goodbye, Class of 2022, I wish the best for every one of you. Even though it might be from a distance, I cannot wait to witness all of the great things you will do.

To my friends: Thank you for supporting me through it all To the Eaton Red Ink: Thank you for giving me the tools necessary to follow my dreams.

To Jaryn Guerra: Thank you for believing in me when I was convinced no one did.

To Chad Shaw: Thank you for always listening.

The current home of Eaton High School is soon to be the new home of the middle schoolers in the Eaton School District. New additions have been added to the current high school in preparation for these younger students. The idea behind these additions is to preserve the school as much as possible in the coming years.

This, however, is already not happening because certain students within the school are disrespecting the new opportunities that have been put in place for them. Many bathrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities have been mistreated, and it is disheartening to see students taking advantage of what they are given.

Although there are only a few people that are being disrespectful toward the facilities, many are feeling the effects.

Junior Trent Salberg said, “It upsets me because there are certain groups of people that go in there and break things thinking it’s funny but then all guys get grouped together when being punished. It makes us all look bad when in reality it’s only a select few.”

The acts of the few are often taken out on the many because that is the only way that it can be stopped.

Assistant Principal Tom Shannon said, “It’s something as simple as just taking pride in our building and bathrooms that carries over to the pride that we show in our academics and our co-curriculars…on the field and on the court. That’s the root of what we do…that is the core that carries on over to where everybody else sees how we work.”

Eaton High School prides

itself on not only its athletics, but its academics and its image in the community as well. There are so many things that this school has earned the right to take pride in, and when kids do this kind of thing, it ruins the entire reason behind the students who are trying to make their school a better place. Junior Grant Hernandez said, “When people do this kind of thing, it really destroys the school’s image.”

It is simply disappointing to see that students enjoy disrespecting the school’s property enough for bathrooms to be shut down, and for it to turn into such a big deal. The mindset that it is just a joke, or that if people are seeing it and just not saying anything about it needs to change, because the weight of the situation is a lot more than some people realize.

Not only does it inconvenience the students, it paints a bad picture around the high school, and it looks bad for the community. The general disrespect that is being shown towards the school may seem harmless in the eyes of some, but the reputation of the school is being affected.

People from other schools should walk in and admire the building and recognize the excellence of the students of

Eaton High School, but they aren’t able to do so when there is caution tape blocking off the bathrooms.

Vandalism isn’t solely affecting the school, however.

There are expensive costs and possibly criminal outcomes to the acts being committed.

Theft isn’t a joke and people are treating it as just that. The school also has to replace the things that are being stolen, many of which are quite costly. Shannon said, “How do we get into the mindset that we are actually destroying property?”

There are so many things to be proud of in regards to being a part of the Eaton Reds family. These tokens of pride that the school carries on their back are being tarnished and ruined because people want to have a laugh, or for whatever reason they are being disrespectful towards the school.

The mindset that the physical building isn’t important and that it will just be fixed needs to be changed, and until it is, Eaton students shouldn’t be proud of the disrespect. There should be no pride in vandalism and in acts that can be prevented. The students need to come together and take their school and their community seriously if they would like to be treated the same way.

In the fall, she will study Journalism and Media Communication with a minor in Entrepreneurship. As a part of the Eaton Red Ink, she has grown a passion for writing and will be involved in the Rocky Mountain Student’s Newspaper, The Collegian. As she has been writing, Charlotte took up a hobby of photography which has now turned into a business, thus she plans to pursue after high school with a business license. Reynolds said, “I am super passionate about pursuing my business and my creative vision. As summer approaches and I have more time, I am booking 2023 seniors, which is so exciting.” She specializes in seniors, engagements, fashion

marketing, and couples. Already, she has booked weddings and engagements and cannot wait to further grow and improve her business and craft. Inside of school Charlotte is the senior class president, a LINK leader, the Managing Editor of the Eaton Red Ink, in marching band, Jazz Ensemble, and in Symphonic Band. Reynolds has been in the band since middle school and is now taking her career to the next level by playing for the CSU marching band.

The most important Eaton acronym word to her is ownership. She said, “taking ownership of your actions and choices is a part of adolescent development. Ownership means taking pride in what you do, taking responsibility for your actions, and holding yourself accountable for your mistakes. Self-advocating is an admirable trait that shows you are committed to improving.” Reynolds has always been a great role model throughout the school and community, which leaves an amazing legacy.

She wants to leave the legacy of someone who was passionate, involved, and someone who used her voice. Reynolds said, “Throughout high school, I have matured and grown a lot. I am more confident and authentic to myself than I was when I walked into the doors of EHS for the first time. I hope to inspire and empower those around me always and I hope that is how I am remembered when I graduate.”

ryleemartin socialmediaeditor Jaden Stone (22) plans on attending Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, to play baseball. Stone has not decided what he wants to study or do after college, but is planning to stay all four years in Hastings.

Stone has been devoted to baseball since he was a kid and is excited for his future.

Within EHS, Stone participates in baseball, basketball, student council, Eaton Red Ink, and LINK. Stone helped the baseball team win the State

Championship his junior year and plans to make another deep run in the state tournament this season with his teammates. Leadership has always been a big part of Stone’s high school career. Stone said, “It is important for me to be a leader in the school in order to make it a better place for all students, and to make EHS an enjoyable place for everyone.”

Leaving a legacy on the school is something that Stone has made a priority throughout his time at EHS. “I want people to remember me as a nice per-

For high school students, this is especially hard because someone has to go out of their comfort zone and take the initiative. Abigail Vondy did this with the school’s newspaper, the Eaton Red Ink. Vondy took charge and has been the best leader that any staff could ask for. Eaton Red Ink Newspaper advisor Jaryn Guerra, said, “Over the last two years, the newspaper literally would not have happened without Vondy. She makes sure everything gets done, and if it doesn’t, she does it herself no matter how much work it is.”

When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” This is nothing but prominent in Vondy’s life, as she strives to be better not only for herself, but for others. Love doesn’t have to be for people, it can be for a lifestyle.

Vondy doesn’t just show this love in the way she treats her staff, but also in the way she treats her role as editor-in-chief. She makes the newsroom better every time she walks in, and there isn’t anybody that could fill the role quite like she did.

Her love for writing and for other people has allowed her to become the amazing person that she is today. Vondy said, “I fell in love with writing for other people. And I wasn’t too bad at it, so I took it and ran with it.” People often say to choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Vondy plans to do this. She said, “I will be going to college at the University of Washington. I am planning on studying English. My end goal is to become an English professor who writes novels on the side.” Leaving high school is an exciting yet challenging milestone for any senior. Guerra said, “Vondy will go on after high school and she will keep impacting everyone like she has with people in this newsroom, and she will make waves no matter where she is because that’s the kind of person that she is.” The future could not be any brighter for this amazing writer, student, and person.

Feature Editor Emily Hogsett aubreyledall staffreporter Emily Hogsett has been a part of the Eaton Red Ink staff for two and a half years;.

She joined the newspaper the second semester of her sophomore year when language arts teacher, Deirdre White, suggested she should try it. Hogsett not only writes captivating stories for the Red Ink, she also carries her camera to sporting and school events constantly to capture photos. Throughout her time on the Red Ink staff, Hogsett has had many

titles. She was the Sports Editor, News Editor, and the Feature Editor. Because of her involvement in Red Ink, she has learned so much. “I learned lessons spanning from different writing styles and how to become a better writer to how to take sports photos,” said Hogsett. Her involvement and photography skills also gave her the opportunity to be a part of and attend several events. When looking back on her time in the newsroom, Hogsett’s favorite things have been “all the laughter in the newsroom, being able to explore the world of photography and improving my writing skills to a new level.” Her story preferences have changed over the years; she enjoys writing sports and news stories but has recently tried her hand at writing feature stories. Hogsett’s photos and articles leave behind a legacy of their own as well as her involvement. She said, “I strived to interview a variety of people and I hope this carries into the future staff of the RedInk.” After graduation, Hogsett plans to attend CSU and will work towards becoming a family and consumer science teacher.

As a staff reporter, Hays has spent a lot of time finding students and interviewing them.

“Interviews are by far the best part of newspaper. I love getting to talk to people I’ve never met before,” Hays said. Hays

is planning to attend Colorado State University after high school, and then possibly joining the air force afterwards.

“My favorite part of newspaper is the art because I love drawing, I love aspiration, and I love the inspiration that my classmates give me. It allows me to express my art through paper,” Holguin said. After high school, Holguin will attend school to become a graphic designer.

Staff Reporter Hunter Tomlinson logangullett staffreporter Hunter Tomlinson (22), joined newspaper to try something new. “I wanted to experience something different, and newspaper seemed like a really unique class,” Tomlinson said.

Being a staff reporter, Tomlinson enjoys having the freedom to express his voice. Tomlinson said, “I like being able to write stories on what I want to write about and what I find interesting. You can express your own

opinion without caring what other people think about you.”

Tomlinson also enjoys being around the other members of newspaper. “The people here are really cool. The main reason I’ve stayed in this class is because of them,” Tomlinson said. After graduation, Tomlinson is planning to get a fulltime job and work for a while, and then eventually live with his friends. “After high school, my main priority is to have fun with my life,” Tomlinson said.

Staff Reporter Katie Gomez logangullett staffreporter Katie Gomez (22) is a staff reporter for the Red Ink and has been in newspaper since her sophomore year. She joined because it sounded fun to her and she enjoys to write. “My favorite part of newspaper is getting the opportunity to interview people and take pictures at school events,” Gomez said.

One thing Gomez will miss about newspaper is the class’s environment. Gomez said, “I’ll

miss the atmosphere and the people around. It’s a really positive room.” She has enjoyed the freedom of expressing her own opinions as a journalist.

Gomez said, “One good thing I’ve learned from newspaper is that you can express your opinion no matter what anyone else thinks.” After high school, Katie plans on attending Aims Community College where she will get a degree in radiologic technology.

“It’s good for me as a senior to interact with the underclassmen to see what my school’s going to look like in the future,” Livingston said. Livingston’s favorite part of newspaper is the class atmosphere. “I love the culture of the newspaper classroom, it’s a different vibe,”

Livingston said, “We all have one communal ideal.” One good thing that Livingston has learned from newspaper is how friendly the community is. “I’ve learned that mostly everyone in the school is willing to talk and be friends with you, you just have to approach them the right way,” Livingston said. After high school, Livingston will take Aims classes over the summer and try to get her bachelor’s degree early.

Deirdre White wraps up her time at EHS as she looks toward retirement

Not only that, but an instrumental teacher will also be concluding her career with the finality of the historic building. English teacher Deirdre Whit, will be retiring with the class of 2022 after 21 years at the school.

White attended Douglas County High School, which later led her to an engineering program at Colorado State University. Quickly, she realized the world of engineering was not for her and instead began to pursue her lifelong passion in English. “I always

She knew she wanted to work in a small town because she adored the culture, tradition, and environment of tight-knit communities.

During her graduation trip to Italy, White received a phone call saying she received an interview at Eaton High School. During the tour of the school, the principal at the time showed White the room where she would be teaching.

She said, “They showed me that room. I was in the 1928 building downstairs. I was in awe. I fell in love and thought ‘this is where I want to be.’”

The rest is history.

loved English in high school.

Language is my thing. I read, I write, I speak. It’s what I’m good at,” she said. Although teaching was not her original career path, it quickly became the one that suited her best.

She said, “I’m absolutely passionate about literature and I wanted to pass that passion on.

I also had really bad literature teachers in high school and I wanted to be different for students like me.” After finishing up her degree at the University of Northern Colorado, White immediately began a search for

She said, “At the beginning, it was kind of a game. It was challenging, exciting, and new.

And then I got this disillusion.

It really changed my view on what teaching was, so I had to leave. Then when I came back, I knew it was much more than just a job.” White returned to teaching at Eaton after taking some time off to recoup and raise her children. In fact, she taught at University for two years before a position opened up for her to grasp.

During her first four years at

the high school, White also became the advisor for the Eaton Red Ink. She was asked to fill the position, and instead of being afraid of the unknown, she took the knowledge she already had and learned as much as she could.

It was easy for White to fall in love with the school paper because she “took a news writing class my senior year of college and I fell in love with it.

The investigating, the writing, reading, learning, everything. I fell in love with it. But I was so close to graduating that I could not change my major,” she said.

Rapidly, White not only fell in love with news but also with the environment of the newsroom. She said, “The camaraderie. You go through things and talk about things that aren’t repeated on the outside. It’s a tight group where information is shared and ideas are exchanged openly. People speak their minds and I never saw that get betrayed outside of the newsroom and I loved that. It was like a community.

And it was hard. The difficulty of it created this sense of pride and ownership. The sense of accomplishment and honor, I loved it.” White dedicated a great deal of effort, energy, and love to the Eaton Red Ink. The paper would not be where it is today without White taking on the challenge of being an advisor all those years ago.

White also took immense pride in all the students who joined the paper. She said, “I was crazy about watching young, shy writers who came into the newspaper and found a voice. I watched them blossom into these beautiful, outspoken, intelligent, well-written people.”

Now, she faces the next step in her life. White is looking forward to sleeping in, following her passions, and spend-

ing more time with her family.

One of her biggest goals is to complete a novel she has been working on for years.

“I want to write. I have a novel that I almost have finished and it’s been almost finished for 11 years. I’m so close to this novel begin done and I need to get it done for me. It’s not necessarily to become this worldfamous published author, but for my own sanity,” she said.

White is also excited to take the time to paint, create, play music, and travel. She has been putting all of her passions on the back burner for years and she can not wait to put more focus on them.

She said, “Soon I will be able to get up and go to work. Ex-

cept for its working on things that are so dear to my heart.”

White has impacted EHS in more ways than explainable.

Not only has she personally impacted hundreds of students, but she also forever influenced EHS journalism.

The Red Ink will forever have her to thank for its success and reputation. Eaton High School will always have a special place in White’s heart as she takes on her next adventure.

“We really are lucky to have the students we have here. We really do have the best kids. We have created a culture of excellence that I don’t think exists in a lot of high schools. It will be hard to leave this place,” she said.

The Red Ink is Eaton High School’s school-sponsored and student-generated public forum, which encourages the free exchange of ideas and information,” the Eaton Media Editorial policy states. The newspaper serves to inform and represent the student body. Throughout its history, the Eaton Red Ink has given staff members the opportunity to find their voice and use it. Many past and present students cherish their time on the Red Ink staff.

Former Red Ink advisor Deirdre White said, “Finding our voice is when you explore and find your ability to write, talk, and speak. Using your voice is when you have the guts to ask the questions.

They become artists. Artists don’t practice their craft for public acclaim, they are brave enough to speak out. They let the chips fall where they may.”

Deirdre White has taught English at Eaton High School for 21 years and advised the paper for 19. She advocated in 2007 for turning The Chieftain to an entity that represents the high school and town with integrity: The Red Ink. “We are the face of Eaton as a newspaper,” said White. White holds the newspaper dear to her heart.

She said, “Journalism produces intelligent and passionate citizens.”

In Journalism, the First Amendment is learned and

recited the very first week.

“To have an educated and free populus, newspapers should be able to write what they want without censorship from the government. We have the right to free press, speech, religion, assembly, and redress of grievances through the First Amendment. I want my kids to know how incredibly important those freedoms are.

Our job as journalists is to hold our leaders accountable to the truth, sound judgment, and moral decisions,” said White.

Freedom of speech and press are instrumental to student media and its journalists.

Eaton alum and former staff member Jon Reynolds said, “I learned to be a proficient writer, which has helped me in all facets of my life. Being a good writer helps you be a better thinker which helps you to communicate more effectively.”

Reynolds wrote for The Chieftain his sophomore through his senior year of high school. “I specialized in editorial and feature writing. I have always had strong opinions and editorials were my favorite,” said Reynolds. In 1997 through 1999, Reynolds worked alongside staff member Paul Loftis. Loftis wrote for the paper from 1998 to 1999. Loftis said, “I learned practical skills of working in a dark room and developing photos, learning paper layout, and learning how to make

photos and articles fit in the space allowed. I really enjoyed learning how to take and find photos that represented the article well. But mostly, I enjoyed learning to ask the right questions and listen to people when interviewing them. Active listening was a skill that I learned a lot about while working with the paper. It is a skill that has continued to be an important aspect of my career in Risk Management.” Eaton alum and former Editor in Chief Sydney Booth said, “I learned so much in journalism, namely leadership skills and learning to use Adobe Suite. I use it every day in college. I specialized in news writing from 2015-2019.” Former Editor In Chief and photographer Noelle Meagher said, “Through journalism, I learned that people are attracted to the camera. I improved my time management and social skills. I obtained effective communication skills and mastered working with different personality types.” Meagher was on staff from 2016 to 2020. As the newsroom changes, the Red Ink’s legacy will stay the same.

Editor In Chief Abigail Vondy said, “The Red Ink gives students a place where they can be represented and have a voice. It enforces the importance of press and a good team that makes you a better writer and person in this world.”

Reds host 2022 Eaton Invitational EHS hosted tennis tournament at Centennial Park

patrickpreston staffreporter The Reds took third at this year’s Eaton Invitational tennis tournament. Lutheran, Severance, University, Brush, and Holy Family attended the tournament on Friday, April 22 at Centennial Park in Greeley, Colorado. All twelve courts at the park were being used at all times of the tournament.

The day of the tournament was hot and very windy, but there were plenty of spectators to watch the matches.

The Eaton girls found success and made it through several rounds of the tournament.

There weren’t any Reds in the championship matches; however, they were all able to play matches for third and fourth place.

Aubrey Ledall (23) played her opponent from Lutheran for third place. She took a tough loss in the first set with a score of 6-0 followed by a second set of 6-1. Her previous wins allowed her to take fourth place.

Ledall said, “I ended up taking fourth overall. The wind forces you to make smarter moves and it was different playing in the wind because we hadn’t before, but overall the day was fun. We did well as individuals and as a team.”

Junior Jayden Kuskie (23) also played a competitive match. She lost her first set by just one point with a score of 7-6. She then lost the second set 6-1, losing the match and allowing her opponent from University High School to take third place, which placed Kuskie in fourth.

The game changed when Emily Brisendine pulled off a win against her opponent from University. She won the first set 6-3 and kept her momentum in the second set winning with a score of 6-4 and taking

third place.

In the doubles matches, Zoie Floryance (22) and Moriah Noonan (22) played their third-place match against yet another team from University High School. They were unable to get a win and lost two sets in a row with scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

They finished the tournament in fourth place. Floryance said, “I believe my partner and I did our best and were able to keep up with the teams we played. It’s hard playing tennis in the wind and heat all day, so our last match was a challenge for sure, but we were able to compete to our full potential.”

Kallie Salberg (24) and Taylor Bradshaw (22) picked up where Brisendine left off and stuck it to University. They lost the first set with a score of 6-3 but quickly came back.

They won the second set by six points with a final score of 6-0.

They closed the match with another win in the third set with a score of 10-5 and took third

place. Salberg said, “Overall we played decent, but we could definitely work on staying out of our heads and not getting down on each other.”

Abby Copeland (23) and Tiana McDaniel (23) kept up the pace and defeated University High School in two sets. The first set ended with a score of 7-6 and the second set finished the set with a score of 6-3, placing the Lady Reds third. Copeland said, “The tournament showed me that I play better when there is more pressure because I push myself to do better. Doing something that means a lot to me really encourages me.”

The final doubles team was Tayla Weidemen (24) and Shelby Shuman (23). They played the Severance Silver Knights and took another win.

The first set was a Reds win with a score of 7-6 and the second set was another win with a score of 6-2.

theran took fifth with a team score of 17.

University High School took fourth place with a score of 20 points.

The Lady Reds took third

place with a score of 25 points.

The Reds were beat only by the Silver Knights from Severance with a score of 47 points and by Holy Family, who scored a total of 52 points.

Track dominates at Bronco Stampede

Meet postponement allows for better meet preparation katiegomez staffreporter The track season is over halfway completed and both the men’s and women’s track teams have continued to dominate the competition.

On Monday, April 25, the track team competed against 15 teams at the Bronco Stampede meet in Kersey, which was hosted by Platte Valley High School. Overall, the men’s team placed first at the meet, while the women’s team placed third. The meet was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 23, but due to the high winds, it was unfortunately suspended. For runner Andie Rasmussen (24), the postponement was just extra time to prepare for the competition. Rasmussen said, “At first, the weather threw me off a little bit, but having a nicer day and more time to prepare helped me more.” Ethan Florez (22) felt the same way as Rasmussen. Florez said, “I was

not thrown off by the cancellation because I felt like I wasn’t too prepared when the meet started, but then once the wind kicked up it did throw me off a little bit.

Coming onto Monday, when it was a nice day, I felt like I had more focus.” Athletes made use of their extra time to prepare and competed as best as they could.

Over 25 Eaton athletes placed, many in multiple events, crushing the competition. In the 100-meter dash, Madelyn Fisher (24) placed fourth, Florez placed third, and Skyler Williams (23) placed fifth. Rasmussen placed first in the 200-meter dash, Florez placed third, Owen Dejong (24) placed fourth, and Dakota Braucher (23) placed fifth.

Braucher also placed first in the 400-meter dash. In the 800-meter run, Will Grable (23) placed third, Ryan Martinez (25) placed fifth, and Sean Anderson (25)

placed 10th. Rasmussen also placed first in the 1600-meter run, Clayton Heid (25) placed ninth, Anderson placed 10th, and Aedalin Barclay (24) placed fourth.

In the 3200-meter run, Barclay placed third and Heid placed 10th. In the 100-meter hurdles, Madison Robson (23) placed second and Kaiya Sinkler (23) placed ninth. In 110-meter hurdles, Joseph Sisneros (22) placed second, Michael Salazar (23) placed third, and Aiden Adams (25) placed fourth.

Robson also placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles, Zac Grable (23) placed first, Sisneros placed second, and Adams placed fifth. As for relays, the girls 4x100 meter relay placed second.

In the triple jump, Ross placed third, Trenton Salberg (23) placed third, and W. Grable placed sixth. Sinkler placed first in the pole vault, Dejong placed first, Salberg placed third, and Walker Copeland (23) placed fourth. In the long jump, Braucher placed fourth, Salazar placed fifth, and Rasmussen placed 10th.

In the shot put, Lucas Cass (22) placed third and Charlie Fritzler (24) placed seventh. In the discus throw, Philip Lawrence (22) placed second and Cass placed third. During the meet, there were plenty of athletes whose results reflected the hard work and dedication they have been putting into the sport.

Even with extra time to prepare, there were still some challenges the team faced. Florez said, “One challenge that we faced is that we weren’t used to it being so rushed. There were not even half the teams that were originally there.” Even with the hardships, both Florez and Rasmussen think the season is going well.

Florez said, “So far a lot of people are meeting their goals and they’re starting to get better and improve. Our relays are getting faster, our handoffs are getting better, I just feel like everyone is progressively going towards that peak performance.”

Rasmussen feels the season has been going well due to the amount of PRs the team has had. All the hard work during practices and other meets is paying off for the team with great results.
