Burlington’s next-door neighbor, Winooski, transforms into a citywide stage for Waking Windows. The indie music fest takes place in clubs, cafés, churches and even the center of a traffic circle. In this issue, we feature Vermont artist Johnny Swing, whose large-scale coin furniture and architectural lighting are on exhibit this season at the Shelburne Museum. ertain cities are practically synonymous with the festivals they host. When a music lover thinks of Austin, Texas, the next thought is likely South by Southwest. Indio, Calif.? Coachella, of course. For Winooski, Vt., that festival is Waking Windows. Nothing in Vermont compares to the beautiful madness of this three-day music and arts celebration. An annual signifier that summer is just around the corner, Waking Windows takes place the first weekend in May. Over the past eight years, it’s grown from a small fringe gathering to a sprawling event attended by thousands. (A September offshoot takes place in Portland, Maine.) For fans of underground and indie bands, Waking Windows is the gold standard in terms of both scale and cutting-edge lineup. Whatever kind of music you’re into — metal, folk, electronica, indie pop, country or jazz — this fest has you covered. “It’s become part of the city’s identity,” said former Winooski mayor Seth Leonard in 2015. “As the festival has been growing and evolving with the city, the city has been growing and evolving with the festival.” 8

Locally, Winooski is referred to as Burlington’s Brooklyn, as it’s directly adjacent and just across a river. A mix of stately restored historic buildings — including several old mills — and sleek new construction frames the diminutive downtown. Ongoing commercial revitalization has made the small city an ideal place to launch, and experience, an event like Waking Windows. Bars, restaurants, cafés and boutiques populate the perimeter of Winooski’s central traffic circle, and most of them transform into music venues during the festival’s run. Its producers have been bringing exciting musical talent to the Burlington area for years. Partly inspired by the Thing in the Spring, a similar shindig in Peterborough, N.H., Waking Windows debuted in 2011 with a series of showcase concerts at Winooski’s primary rock club, the Monkey House. That venue continues to be one of the festival’s major hubs. Waking Windows’ lineup always includes a mix of national, international, regional and local artists. In 2018, more than 250 acts performed, a large percentage of them

Vermont-based. Over the years, bigger and bigger names have dominated the festival’s top slots, as have up-and-comers. For instance, Brooklyn-based rock band Big Thief played one of the most talkedabout sets of Waking Windows in 2017. At the end of that year, numerous critics ranked the group’s album Capacity high on their best-of lists, considerably raising the band’s profile. This year, Oakland, Calif., art-pop mavericks Tune-Yards headline. Though based 3,000 miles away, founder and front person Merrill Garbus, a New England native, lived in southern Vermont before moving out west more than a decade ago. Other headliners include Chicago fuzz-rock five-piece Twin Peaks, Los Angeles electro-pop outfit KNOWER and Burlington expat pop-rocker Caroline Rose. One of Waking Windows’ many charms is the ease of wandering around town to take in a multitude of acts. In 2018, the 17 venues included two large outdoor stages in the center of downtown: the massive Main Stage, which

ertaines villes sont pratiquement synonymes des festivals qu’elles accueillent. Quand on est amateur de musique, la ville d’Austin, au Texas, évoque instantanément South by Southwest. Indio, en Californie? Coachella, bien sûr. Et quand on pense à Winooski, au Vermont, c’est le festival Waking Windows qui vient tout de suite à l’esprit. Rien ne se compare à la « belle folie » de cette célébration des arts et de la musique qui s’étire sur trois jours. Signal annuel de l’imminence de l’été, Waking Windows a lieu durant la première fin de semaine de mai. Au cours des huit dernières années, l’événement est passé de petite réunion marginale à une grande messe attirant des milliers de personnes. (Un rappel est même organisé en septembre à Portland, dans le Maine.) Pour les fans de groupes indépendants et underground, Waking Windows est le summum en termes d’affluence et de programmation. blocks off Winooski Falls Way; and the Rotary Stage, a smaller setup in the park within the traffic circle. The Main Stage area also features food trucks and pop-up eateries. After picking up their wristbands, attendees can stroll in and out of all locations at their leisure. Among the must-visit venues: the century-old Winooski United Methodist Church, which hosts some of the fest’s most intimate sets. In late afternoon, the setting sun pours glorious light through its beautiful stained-glass windows. And Waterworks Food + Drink, perched at the edge of the rushing Winooski River, offers dramatic views and some of Waking Windows’ wildest late-night acts. In addition to live music, standup-comedy showcases and literary events have become integral to the festival’s makeup. Occasionally, short films are screened, usually accompanied by discussions with the filmmaker. And no trip to Waking Windows would be complete without visiting the Downtown Artisan Market, which sets up near the Monkey House. There, attendees can browse the wares of local artists, crafters and fashion designers. Infused with Vermont’s quintessential DIY spirit, Waking Windows is well worth planning a trip around. If you go, keep in mind the simple, joyous greeting that locals have coined for the occasion: Happy Waking Windows!

Nothing in Vermont compares to the beautiful madness of this three-day music and arts celebration. de nombreux critiques de musique ont plébiscité l’album Capacity du groupe, dont la notoriété a ensuite connu une forte impulsion. Cette année, c’est le groupe pop non conformiste Tune-Yards, d’Oakland, en Californie, qui sera la tête d’affiche du festival. Même si ce groupe est basé à quelque 5 000 km de là, l’instigatrice de ce projet musical et chanteuse principale Merrill Garbus, native de 11:44 AM la Nouvelle-Angleterre, a habité dans le sud du Vermont avant de s’installer sur la côte ouest il y a une dizaine d’années. Parmi les autres vedettes, mentionnons Twin Peaks, un quintette fuzz-rock de Chicago, KNOWER, un groupe d’électro-pop de Los Angeles, et la chanteuse de pop-rock Caroline Rose, originaire de Burlington. L’un des nombreux charmes de Waking Windows, c’est qu’il est très facile de déambuler dans la ville pour passer d’un spectacle à un autre. En 2018, les 17 lieux de représentation comprenaient deux grandes scènes extérieures en plein cœur de la ville : l’énorme scène principale qui barre la route Falls Way, et la scène rotative, plus petite, installée dans le parc au centre du rond-point. On trouve également, dans le secteur de la scène principale, des camions de rue et des stands de restauration temporaires. Après avoir récupéré leur bracelet, les festivaliers peuvent circuler comme bon leur semble sur le site. L’église méthodiste unie, vieille d’un siècle, compte parmi les lieux de représentation à ne pas manquer. Certains des spectacles les plus intimes du festival s’y déroulent. En fin d’après-midi, les rayons du soleil passent au travers des superbes vitraux dans un effet des plus spectaculaires. Le Waterworks Food + Drink, perché au bord de la tumultueuse rivière Winooski, offre un panorama saisissant et c’est l’endroit idéal pour les folles prestations de fin de soirée. Au-delà de la musique, des numéros de stand-up comique et des événements littéraires font désormais partie intégrante du festival. Des courts métrages sont également projetés à l’occasion, et sont habituellement suivis de discussion avec le réalisateur. Enfin, aucune participation à Waking Windows ne serait complète sans une visite au marché des artisans au centre-ville, tout près du Monkey House. On y trouve tout un florilège d’artistes, de bricoleurs et de créateurs de mode locaux. Parfaitement représentatif de l’esprit d’innovation qui caractérise le Vermont, Waking Windows vaut vraiment le détour. Si vous y allez, n’oubliez pas de faire comme les gens du coin et d’utiliser la jolie expression qu’ils ont créée pour l’occasion : « Happy Waking Windows! ».

erroir is a French word often used in the winemaking world: It refers to the set of environmental factors — soil, climate and sunlight — that imbue grapes with their distinct flavor. But the word has wider applications. Travelers in search of Vermont’s unique terroir can get a taste of place simply by dining at one of our many fine restaurants. A great meal says a great deal about the state’s farm-to-table food systems, community partnerships and creative spirit. And spring is the best time to sample it all: Vermont Restaurant Week, held from April 26 through May 5, offers three-course, prix-fixe menus at more than 100 participating eateries throughout the state. Co-owner John Rao spent years perfecting the Neapolitan-style preparation — in which only a handful of pizzaioli in the world offer instruction — until he settled on just the right combination of superfine flour, San Marzano tomatoes and whole-milk mozzarella. He even shipped his two-ton oven from Italy to Burlington. Once a livery barn, his restaurant strikes the perfect balance of cozy and elegant. A pile of logs — to feed the fire — sits between the front door and the sleek bar, which serves stellar cocktails. Verità’s pizza dough undergoes a long, lazy rise that makes it tastier. The fresh house fior di latte cheese is creamy heaven wherever it appears, be it on a Margherita pie accented with basil, a white pizza topped with curls of prosciutto, or the Cherry Amore dotted with cherries and drizzled with melted honey. The menu offsets all that dough and cheese with gorgeous salads of peppery arugula studded with pine nuts and shaved fennel, and colorful roasted beets with avocado and a citrus dressing. Antipasto devotees can cobble together platters of marinated artichoke hearts, wedges of fior di latte and smoky ribbons of speck — but they may not have room for the rest of the meal. Pro tip: Go easy on the antipasti. There’s really only one proper way to finish a meal at Verità: with pizza alla Nutella. The hot, chewy dough is folded over melted Nutella, drizzled with chocolate and sprinkled with sugar. —CORIN HIRSCH

Before it became the quintessence of Vermont farm-to-table dining, Burlington’s Farmhouse Tap & Grill was, of all things, a McDonald’s. In 2010, new owners transformed one of the city’s few fast-food chain restaurants into a temple to local fare. And they tapped plenty of craft beers to wash it down. Let’s just say the burgers aren’t what they were. The chefs craft grass-fed LaPlatte River Angus Farm beef into a tender, oozing tower of flesh atop a crisp bun. The barbecue dry-rubbed chicken wings come with chile sauce and blue cheese dressing; the meatloaf is

À la Pizzeria Verità, les croûtes minces comme du papier sortent grillées et boursouflées à point du four à bois où elles cuisent à 900 degrés. En deux minutes top chrono. Le copropriétaire John Rao a passé des années à perfectionner la technique de confection napolitaine — que seulement une poignée de pizzaioli enseignent dans le monde — jusqu’à ce qu’il trouve la parfaite combinaison de farine superfine, de tomates San Marzano et de mozzarella de lait entier. Son four de deux tonnes a même fait le voyage de l’Italie jusqu’à Burlington. Son restaurant, qui était autrefois une pension pour chevaux, allie à merveille confort et élégance. Une pile de bûches — pour alimenter le feu — se trouve entre la porte d’entrée et le superbe bar, où l’on sert des cocktails éblouissants. La pâte à pizza de Verità est soumise à un long processus de levage qui la rend des plus goûteuses. Le fromage fior di latte frais et crémeux fait merveille partout où on le dépose, que ce soit sur une Margherita agrémentée de basilic, une pizza blanche avec des rosettes de prosciutto ou encore une Cherry Amore parsemée de cerises et de miel coulant. Pour compenser cette orgie de pâte et de fromage, le menu propose de magnifiques salades de roquette poivrée avec noix de pin et lamelles de fenouil, ou de betteraves colorées avec avocat et vinaigrette citronnée. Les amateurs d’antipasto peuvent quant à eux se régaler d’un délicieux plateau de cœurs d’artichaut marinés, de morceaux bien coulants de fior di latte et de rubans de jambon speck fumé — au risque de ne plus avoir faim pour le plat principal. Conseil d’ami : allez-y mollo avec les antipasti. Il y a une seule façon de finir le repas dans les règles de l’art chez Verità : avec une « pizza alla Nutella ». La pâte chaude et moelleuse, pliée en deux, renferme du Nutella fondu parsemé de copeaux de chocolat et saupoudré de sucre. —CORIN HIRSCH Là où se trouve actuellement le Farmhouse Tap & Grill de Burlington, quintessence de l’alimentation « de la ferme à la table » du Vermont, on trouvait – tenez-vous bien – un McDonald. En 2010, les nouveaux propriétaires ont transformé ce restaurant, l’un des rares en ville à appartenir à une chaîne de bouffe minute, en temple de la gastronomie locale. Et on y trouve une foule de bières en fût pour faire descendre le tout. Disons simplement que les burgers ont bien changé entre les deux époques! Les chefs utilisent le bœuf engraissé à l’herbe de LaPlatte River Angus Farm pour concocter des boulettes tendres et juteuses, déposées sur un petit pain croustillant. bathed in herb gravy and spicy housemade ketchup. Some nights, the menu features all wild edibles — just as the taps are occasionally turned over to a visiting brewer. Even the “everyday” beer menu teems with rare, local and exotic brews. There might be a Vienna lager from Stowe’s von Trapp Brewing, a double IPA from Greensboro’s Hill Farmstead Brewery or a chocolaty imperial stout from the Netherlands. Other local quaffs range from a semidry hard cider made in Burlington to a glass of lively natural wine grown and vinified in Shelburne. It’s little wonder that the place is always packed, from lunch straight through to last call. If the main dining room gets too crowded, diners can seek refuge in the firelit speakeasy downstairs or, in summer, decamp to the sidewalk café or backyard beer garden. The restaurant as we know it was invented in France and, for a long time, going out to dinner in America meant eating French food. Even when more varied spots later sprang up, visiting a fancy restaurant still meant ordering aubergines grillées instead of grilled eggplant. But the pendulum has swung the other way. As casual restaurants, with their laminated menus and heaping portions, became the American norm, white linen and impeccably dressed servers began to read as snobby. And, with the welcome rise of other world cuisines in U.S. cities, Continental dining lost its primacy. Nowadays a true French restaurant is hard to find, but Burlington has an utterly charming one in Bistro de Margot. Here, Hervé Mahé prepares finely crafted classic dishes, such as snails drowning in parsley-and-garlic butter, and duck terrine with pistachio and coriander. Yet the Burgundy-born chef also lets Vermont ingredients and a hint of global flavor inform the fare. Playful perfection is the marker of Bistro de Margot’s menu, and the luscious desserts are no exception. Lemon curd arrives in a jar, topped with strips of gooey candied lemon peel and dots of torched meringue. It is both fun to behold and swoon-inducing to eat. The relaxed elegance extends to the service. Few chefs make a point of visiting with customers in the dining room these days, but Mahé stops by every table with a ready laugh and stories to tell. The chef’s ability to blend the best of French technique with the casual flavor of Vermont dining makes Bistro de Margot one of Burlington’s best restaurants du jour. —SUZANNE PODHAIZER

Le restaurant tel qu’on le connaît a été inventé en France et, pendant longtemps, quand on sortait souper en Amérique, on allait forcément manger français. Même quand les restaurants se sont mis à se diversifier et à se multiplier, il était de bon ton de commander des « aubergines grillées » et non des « grilled eggplant ». Mais, depuis, la vapeur s’est renversée. Quand les restaurants décontractés, avec leurs menus plastifiés et leurs gigantesques portions, sont devenus la norme en Amérique, les restaurants « nappe blanche », avec leurs serveurs tirés à quatre épingles, ont commencé à faire un peu snob. Et avec la montée (tout à fait bienvenue) des autres cuisines du monde aux États-Unis, la gastronomie « vieille Europe » a perdu son monopole. De nos jours, les vrais restaurants français sont difficiles à trouver, mais il y en a un absolument charmant à Burlington : le Bistro de Margot. Hervé Mahé y concocte des plats classiques parfaitement maîtrisés, comme les escargots noyés dans le beurre à l’ail et au persil, et la terrine de canard avec pistaches et coriandre. Mais le chef natif de Bourgogne se permet également d’intégrer des ingrédients du Vermont et une touche de saveurs du monde. La perfection sans prétention, voilà ce qui distingue la carte du Bistro de Margot, et les somptueux desserts ne font pas exception. La crème de citron est servie dans un petit pot et coiffée de zestes de citron confits et de morceaux de meringue flambée. C’est à la fois un ravissement pour les yeux et un pur délice. L’élégance décontractée s’étend jusqu’au service. Peu de chefs prennent la peine d’aller voir les clients dans la salle à manger de nos jours, mais Hervé se fait un point d’honneur de passer à chaque table, toujours rieur et jamais à court d’histoires. ohnny Swing made his first chair in 1987. The dramatic “Tack Chair” looks like a pile of oversize nails, perhaps a vague relation to the iconic seat featured in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Never mind its prickly exterior, sitting on it is a different story: The saucer-size rounds of steel are as comfortable as can be. The Brookline, Vt., artist’s first foray into furniture making would foreshadow his lifelong love of and illustrious career in metalworking, marked by deeply playful designs that elevate mundane objects to extraordinary ones. This spring, the Shelburne Museum celebrates Swing’s masterful craft. Seven miles south of downtown Burlington, the world-class institution was founded in 1947 by sugar heiress and folk-art collector Electra Havemeyer Webb. Its year-round exhibition space, the Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education, showcases not only the works for which Swing is best known — sculptural furniture meticulously fashioned from ordinary coins — but also elements of his process from start to finish. “If you could walk into Johnny Swing’s head, this is what you would see,” said curator Kory Rogers of “Johnny Swing: Design Sense.” The exhibition is on view through June 2, inviting visitors behind the scenes, as it were, and into Swing’s creative world. For Rogers, what makes this show most exciting is its emphasis on lesser-known and seldom-seen aspects of the artist’s practice. “We’re venerating sketches, molds, tools and prototypes as the works of art,” he said. The front section of the Murphy Gallery, on the upper floor of the Pizzagalli Center, is

Située à environ 10 km au sud du centre-ville de Burlington, cette institution de classe mondiale a été fondée en 1947 par Electra Havemeyer Webb, héritière d’un empire du sucre et collectionneuse d’art folk. Son espace d’exposition ouvert à l’année, le Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education, présente non seulement les œuvres qui ont fait la renommée de Swing — ses meubles sculpturaux en pièces de monnaie —, mais également des éléments de sa démarche, du début à la fin. « Si vous pouviez entrer dans la tête de Johnny Swing, c’est ce que vous verriez », dit le conservateur Kory Rogers à propos de « Johnny Swing: Design Sense ». presented as a more polished exhibition, Rogers explained. By contrast, the back of the gallery has been designed to look like Swing’s workspace. Among the objects on view are five of Swing’s massive lamps, some of which writer David Nielsen, in the erstwhile Take Magazine, described as “ominous alien lily pads.” Six of the epoxy-covered Styrofoam molds that Swing uses to fashion his celebrated coin-furniture designs are included; Rogers likened these sumptuous, rounded forms to the work of renowned Japanese American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Those wishing to see Swing’s blockbuster coin designs won’t be disappointed. The Pizzagalli Center lobby showcases several of these works, allowing visitors not only to marvel but to sit on them. Imposing and somewhat futuristic, Swing’s metallic forms are also astonishingly comfortable, considering they’re fashioned almost entirely from tiny bits of metal. In 1997, Swing modeled his first coin chair after Harry Bertoia’s Diamond Chair — one of the most recognizable midcentury modern designs. Swing welded together 6,500 pennies, or $650. He followed that “Penny Chair” with the Johnny Swing’s light fixtures much larger “Nickel Couch,” which became a near-instant success. Today, Swing counts among his collectors and clients the Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, N.Y., as well as fashion house Christian Dior. Beyond the works’ aesthetic appeal and their novel material are philosophical quandaries about value. When, if ever, is money just metal? “For me, [Johnny] is like this perfect mixture of Marcel Duchamp and the TV character MacGyver,” Rogers said. “He sees the potential of everyday objects, and he’s very thoughtful in unexpected ways.” Though Swing moved to Vermont in 1995, “Design Sense” is just his second show in the state. The first was hosted in the summer of 2017 at the Bundy Modern, a midcentury modern gallery and sculpture park in Waitsfield. The current exhibition is the first in a new series at the Shelburne Museum focusing on Vermont’s creative movers and shakers. As Rogers explained, he has long felt that the museum — one of the Northeast’s largest and most prestigious cultural institutions — has “a responsibility to help promote contemporary artists and designers working in Vermont.” (Glass artist Charlotte Potter — the director of Waitsfield’s Yestermorrow Design/Build School and sister of Vermont-based rock star Grace Potter — is on the docket for a 2020 exhibition.) Swing certainly deserves attention in his home state. His works are beautiful and functional, sophisticated and accessible. For those already familiar with him, “Design Sense” will reveal new depth to Swing’s process and practice. Those encountering him for the first time are sure to get their money’s worth.

Stowe Sugar Slalom What’s better than a late-season bluebird day of skiing? A late-season bluebird day of skiing with maple syrup. Since 1939, the Mt. Mansfield Ski Club has hosted the Stowe Sugar Slalom. Now one of America’s most recognized alpine races, the two-day event coincides with the tapping of the state’s maple trees — a sweet tradition. More than 1,000 racers and upwards of 600 spectators have turned out in years past to hit the slopes in festive attire inspired by the season. Relax afterward at a hillside barbecue with live music. A local delicacy will be served: maple syrup on snow, paired with a pickle!

Locals have a special nickname for springtime in Vermont: mud season. Onion River Outdoors, a locally owned gear store in the state’s capital, celebrates the season’s signature muck with the Muddy Onion Spring Classic, a fully supported cycle along central Vermont’s scenic and hilly dirt roads. The 36.9- and 21.3-mile routes attract hundreds of bike enthusiasts with the promise of a messy good time — plus plenty of cow sightings. As the event organizers say, “It’s not easy, but it’s definitely worth it.” A parking-lot party with local beer and barbecue follows the ride.

Vermont City Marathon & Relay

A 2016 article in the Guardian advised, “A good wander unveils the wonder of a city.” One of the most exciting ways to wander Burlington’s streets — and experience their wonder — is at the Vermont City Marathon & Relay, an annual tradition since 1989. As many as 8,000 racers pound the pavement, taking in scenic overlooks of Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains, the bustling Church Street Marketplace and tree-fringed residential streets. This year’s race is one of just seven events honored in the 2019 Road Runners Club of America’s Championship Event Series, which celebrates outstanding locally organized events.

ost people rarely take the opportunity to play tourist in their own town. But when Anna Marie Gewirtz was interviewing for a new job in Burlington last spring, she and her family were able to view the city from a fun perspective: as visitors. “When you’re new to a place, you can experience it in ways that longtime residents might take for granted,” Gewirtz explained of her numerous trips to the Queen City from her previous home in New Jersey. By the way, Gewirtz landed the gig. Since last July, she has served as the executive director of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. “I’m thrilled to be called a local now,” said Gewirtz, beaming. The Flynn is a cornerstone of Burlington’s vibrant performing arts community. Big-name acts such as jazz musician Herbie Hancock, singer Mavis Staples and comedian Jay Leno grace the stately artdeco Flynn MainStage, while offbeat and cutting-edge performances take place in the lower-level black box, FlynnSpace. The downtown nonprofit arts organization also offers classes and workshops in everything from dance and improv to storytelling and filmmaking. Want to know more? Check out the Flynn’s installation by the baggage carousels at the Burlington International Airport, anticipated to open early this spring. With its red stage curtains and miniaturized version of the Flynn marquee, it’ll be hard to miss. And you’ll find loads of info about must-see upcoming performances. As a newly minted Vermonter, Gewirtz admitted that she still has a lot to learn about her home. She’s been keeping a bucket list of things to see and do, based on recommendations from new friends. While she, her husband and their two kids have been able to cross a lot off, she said, there’s still plenty she’s excited to experience. “Not only is Burlington beautiful, with all of these outdoor opportunities, there is this incredible arts scene,” she said. “It’s pretty spectacular.”

BTV asked Gewirtz to share highlights from that bucket list, as well as tips for getting the most out of being a tourist in Burlington. An ideal spring day in Burlington: I’d start with a picnic lunch on the waterfront, followed by taking a boat tour on the lake. Then I’d spend some time shopping on Church Street and maybe relaxing at one of the coffee shops downtown — I love Muddy Waters and Onyx Tonics. For dinner, I’d want to sit outside at Leunig’s, and then go to a show at the Flynn, of course. After the show — this is a long day! — I’d want to have a drink at Deli 126. It’s got such a great vibe. Other go-to spots for performing arts: ArtsRiot is a great one. Nectar’s is another good spot, but it really depends on what kind of music you’re into. There’s a lot of great comedy in Burlington, so the Vermont Comedy Club and even some of the standup that’s happening in places like the Skinny Pancake. Artists and performance groups that out-of-towners should know: The Vermont Symphony Orchestra is fantastic. Lyric Theatre does an exceptional job. So, whenever they have shows, go see them. And there are so many individual practitioners in this city that I don’t know if I would want to single any one out. Because that’s the amazing thing about Vermont: We have so many different arts troupes — dance and theater and music and comedy. It is a place where creativity is really valued and fostered. Favorite family hiking spots: The walking trails at Shelburne Bay Park are really nice. Also Red Rocks Park, which you can go to any season and it’s beautiful. And Shelburne Farms is an awesome place to go and wander around the trails. You can go for an hour or spend the whole day. It’s worth a visit. Must-have Vermont souvenirs: You can’t leave Vermont without some cheese. You can go to Shelburne Farms for that. Or you can go to the Burlington Farmers Market on Saturdays and get some amazing local food as well as really cool local art and craft products — everything from engraved wooden bowls to photography that is really unique. Places to go with kids: A visit to the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory is going to be a big hit. The tour is free, and then they get to make their own teddy bear, so it’s a magical experience for the kids. Going down to ECHO is great, especially if the weather is rainy and you’re looking for something to fill up a morning or afternoon.

Le Nectar’s est également intéressant, mais cela dépend vraiment de la musique que vous aimez. Le milieu de la comédie est très dynamique à Burlington. Au-delà du Vermont Comedy Club, d’autres endroits comme Skinny Pancake présentent d’excellents monologues d’humour. Artistes et groupes d’interprétation à découvrir : L’orchestre symphonique du Vermont est extraordinaire. Le Lyric Theatre fait un travail impeccable. Donc, s’il y a un spectacle durant votre séjour, ne le manquez pas. Sinon, il y a tellement d’artistes talentueux dans la ville que j’aurais du mal à en nommer un en particulier. C’est ce qu’il y a de la formidable au Vermont : les troupes artistiques sont très nombreuses – que ce soit de danse, de théâtre, de musique ou de comédie. La créativité est très encouragée et valorisée ici. Meilleurs endroits pour faire de la randonnée en famille : Les pistes de randonnée de Shelburne Bay Park sont très belles. Il y a aussi Red Rocks Park, magnifique en toute saison. Sans oublier Shelburne Farms, où il fait bon déambuler dans les sentiers. On peut y passer une heure ou toute la journée. Ça vaut vraiment le détour. Souvenirs du Vermont qu’il faut absolument rapporter chez soi : On ne peut pas quitter le Vermont sans emporter quelques fromages. On peut s’en procurer à Shelburne Farms. Vous pouvez également visiter le Burlington Farmers Market le samedi et dénicher de superbes produits du terroir ainsi que des œuvres d’art et d’artisanat locales — allant de bols en bois gravés jusqu’à des photos vraiment uniques. Où aller avec les enfants : Le Vermont Teddy Bear Factory est toujours un succès auprès des enfants. La visite est gratuite et les enfants peuvent confectionner leur propre ourson en peluche, c’est une expérience magique pour eux. Vous pouvez aussi aller au centre ECHO, en particulier s’il pleut et que vous cherchez à remplir une matinée ou un après-midi.
