When I was a child I grew up listening to my parents’ collection of famous musicals such as The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and West Side Story, among others. Frederick Loewe, whom my parents referred to as “Fritz” had actually rented our house in Connecticut at one time. We had a small set of glassware that he left which we referred to as the “Fritz Loewe glasses”. West Side Story, however, was perhaps my favorite musical. When I attended Juilliard in New York City it was explained to me that Lincoln Center was built where West Side Story took place. Leonard Bernstein, who wrote the score for the musical, was the longtime music director and conductor of the New York Philharmonic. While at Juilliard I worked on weekends as an usher for the NY Philharmonic, and once, while ushering, I had the unlucky assignment of asking Mr. Bernstein and his date to move as they had taken the seats of two patrons who arrived late. Mr. Bernstein was extremely apologetic and gracious in moving to his former seats. It’s been an absolute pleasure to direct this most-revered and beloved work with a most wonderful cast, brilliant designers, and superlative creative team that I have been so fortunate to have on board. As a Shakespeare aficionado I directed Romeo and Juliet twice—so I know the story quite well. This tale of a community torn apart by hate is timeless. The play is set in a neighborhood that has become tribalized and polarized by opposing factions that are essentially at war. The story relates how hate can destroy a community, and only through a painful and tragic epiphany can love finally triumph over all. In both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story the two lovers are only together for a matter of days, even hours, and during that short timeframe they grow from being young teens to mature adults knowing at last the price one has to pay for true love—a love that finally puts an end to the hate and destruction.
