OUTDOOR RECREATION

OUR UPCOMING OUTDOOR ADVENTURE TRIPS! Black Canyon Canoe Trip (April 16-17) Join ODR for a 2 day expedition by canoe of the Black Canyon in Nevada. Launching from the base of the Hoover Dam, we will experience the wonder of Black Canyon, explore side canyons, and soak in natural hot springs. You might see desert bighorn sheep, hawks, lizards, and can paddle into sea caves and hidden coves. Winter paddling on the Colorado through Black Canyon is relaxing flatwater, with smooth and glassy waters, and the occasion current. We will be having a river side camp out by the Colorado River, where ODR will prepare a specialty backcountry dinner next to a warming fire under the stars. Camping/canoe gear is provided by ODR as well as meals. Transportation is not provided in light of Covid-19 protocols, participants may choose to meet ODR at a provided campsite on the evening of the April 15th or stay in local accommodations at their own expense.

Whitewater Rafting Trip (May 22-23) $75 (AD AF, DEPENDENT) $175 (ALL OTHERS) Join ODR for a weekend trip to the Lower Kern River for some whitewater rafting and camping. The Lower Kern is an exciting afternoon run that packs a serious punch. Five miles, five great Class IV rapids, one thrilling jump rock! When you are not getting drenched by glorious waves, enjoy a relaxing swim in the calm pools, and see the abundance

of wildlife. You can’t ask for more in one afternoon of whitewater rafting on the Lower Kern River. Afterwards we will be setting up camp at Headquarters Campground and preparing a backcountry dinner.

Whitewater Kayaking Trip (May 28-30) $120 (AD AF, DEPENDENTS) $462.92 (ALL OTHERS) Spend the Memorial Day weekend with ODR learning to whitewater kayak! This 101 class starts on the flat water of Isabella Lake, where you learn essential boating skills such as the wet-exit, self-rescue, partner-assisted rolls, and efficient stroke technique. At the end of the morning session, we break for a hearty lunch and preview the afternoon’s challenges. We spend the afternoon on the lake developing more of the steering and balancing skills needed to do river maneuvers such as peel-outs, ferries, and eddy turns. These and other techniques are required to become a safe, efficient whitewater kayaker. Begin your second day with a review of the first day’s progress and an introduction to river reading and more safety skills. We progress to the river to practice our new techniques on moving water. After lunch, the two-day class graduates take an exciting run down a class II-III whitewater section of the Kern. Upon completion of this Sierra South kayaking class, students receive a free kayak package rental and are eligible to rent a kayak in the future. Each night will be spent camping at Headquarters Campground, where ODR will prepare dinner for you.

WEEK ACTIVITIES (Adapted from WellnessMama.com)

1

Family Boot Camp: Each family member writes down three of their favorite bodyweight (or weighted, level appropriate) exercises. Exercises can be dance moves, calisthenics, martial arts, anything physical that the entire family can do.

COMPLETED

1 2 3 4 5

The family then goes for a walk, jog, or run and every 60 seconds, they do one of the exercises for 30 seconds.

2

Hide & Sweat: Family members write down 20 physical activities on separate small pieces of paper. These are then put in plastic Easter eggs and hidden around the house (or outside). Kids are then tasked to find the eggs. When they find them they open them and the entire family performs the activity for the reps or amount of time given.

1 2 3 4 5

3

Family Walks: Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Walking is an excellent family activity that can take as much or as little time as necessary. There are so many benefits to walking (and to being outside), and the whole family can participate (even the baby in their stroller).

1 2 3 4 5

4

Structured Exercise: There are many other types of more structured exercises that can be done as a family. For example, you could find an online jujutsu class, dust off the tennis rackets, or set up an obstacle course at the park or in the backyard.
