Greetings!

On behalf of our residents, we are proud to welcome runners, walkers, family and friends to Downtown Columbus for the 2025 OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon and Columbus Promise 5K.

I am delighted to welcome you to Columbus. We are America’s Opportunity City, rich in history and poised for a continued vibrant future. We are excited to host the Black Girls RUN! National Meet Up - we are a welcoming community, a boomtown, and a vibrant place that draws people from all over the country to meet, compete and visit. We have dynamic entertainment districts and friendly neighborhoods, many of which you will discover during the Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and the 5K.

Columbus is among the top sports destinations in the United States. In fact, just this year we hosted the NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium for the first time. Our city also regularly hosts the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball and Division I Women’s Basketball Championships in our city. In recent years our city has also hosted the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championships, the NCAA Women’s Final Four and the NHL All-Star Weekend.

While you are here, we invite you to explore the many things we love about our community: the world-class Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Franklin Park Conservatory, COSI, fantastic shopping, restaurants and nightlife in the Arena District, Short North, German Village, Easton Town Center and dozens of friendly neighborhood spots.

Good luck and thank you for supporting the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon!

Sincerely,

The big day is here!

Energy. Excitement. Community spirit. Race day is a special occasion we look forward to every year — and it’s about so much more than just a race. Today is a celebration of perseverance and achievement, whether you’re lacing up or cheering from the sidelines.

From setting goals and pushing boundaries to creating lasting memories, your participation makes the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon a beloved tradition.

This year, we are honored to host the 2025 National Meetup for Black Girls RUN! Their mission is to encourage Black women to practice a healthy lifestyle and promote wellness for all. A warm welcome to all the members joining us from across the country.

We are also supporting the OhioHealth Mobile Mammography Unit through the OhioHealth Foundation. For nearly a decade, this life-saving program has been breaking down barriers that often prevent women from receiving vital annual breast cancer screenings.

As central Ohio’s largest health system and second largest employer, we are proud to be your partner today — and we will continue to be.

On behalf of the 35,000 OhioHealth associates, physicians and volunteers, we wish you an unforgettable race day. Embrace the challenge, enjoy every moment and continue striving for your goals!

OhioHealth shares our passion of promoting fitness and celebrating the healthy, active lifestyle. Making an Impact:

More

Than

$66,000

donated to the OhioHealth Foundation in 2024

In 2024, the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon, Jet’s Pizza and the Rooster’s Foundation donated more than $66,000 to the OhioHealth Foundation to provide funding for the OhioHealth scalp cooling therapy program, an innovative cancer care treatment that can help prevent or minimize hair loss from chemotherapy.

The “Jet’s Pizza Gives Back” promotion and partnership with Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets contributed more than $43,000 of the generous gift.

This philanthropic support means cancer patients can retain a sense of dignity and control during their treatment journey, as most traditional insurance plans do not cover costs associated with scalp cooling.

Thank you to our partners and all the 2024 Cap City participants for this generous contribution!

BLACK GIRLS RUN! CAP CITY IN 2025

The 2025 OhioHealth Capital City Half and Quarter Marathon and Columbus Promise 5K is proud to host the spring National Meet Up for the national organization, Black Girls RUN!

Black Girls RUN! (BGR!) is dedicated to encouraging and motivating African American women to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The organization, founded in 2009, is led by CEO Jay Ell Alexander and has grown into a powerful movement with over 250,000 members across more than 75 groups nationwide. The annual spring National MeetUp is a highlight of the BGR! calendar, offering members the opportunity to connect, inspire, and run together.

“We are thrilled to partner with Black Girls RUN! for their National Meet-Up during the 2025 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon,” said David Babner, Founder and Race Director of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. “This partnership aligns with our commitment to inclusivity and celebrating the healthy, active lifestyle. We look forward to welcoming BGR! Members to Columbus and supporting their mission of promoting diversity within the running and walking community.”

The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and Black Girls RUN! National Meet-Up is more than a race, it’s a celebration of community, strength and fitness.

“The opportunity to collaborate for this amazing event is so exciting,” said Alexander. “The energy of our organization and

members matched with the excitement of this race will be an event like no other. After participating for the first time in 2024, there was no question we had to bring BGR! Nation to Columbus. And, as we always like to say, it will be ‘a party on the pavement’.”

Jay Ell Alexander will also serve as the Honorary Race Director of this year’s event.

In addition to the half marathon, quarter marathon, and 5K events, Team BGR! will have a private dinner and reception to connect and celebrate with Team BGR! members from across the country.

Thank you to BGR! Columbus Ambassadors, Cheralee Calhoun, Ta Trecia Wesley-Davis and Carolyn Thomas for their work to bring this amazing sisterhood to Columbus.

BEST TOUR OF COLUMBUS ON TWO FEET

Since its debut in 2004, the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon has strived to offer “the best tour of Columbus on two feet.”

“The city provides an amazing backdrop for our event and we are excited to feature our city each year with courses that showcase our best neighborhoods, entertainment districts and iconic buildings,” Race Director David Babner said.

Don’t miss these sites during the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, OhioHealth Quarter Marathon and Columbus Promise 5K.

Downtown Columbus and John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons Start / Finish Line

The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon begins and ends on High Street in the heart of Downtown Columbus, which is in the midst of a revival that has brought new restaurants and shops to the city center. More than 8,000 people now live in downtown Columbus. The John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons, site of the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party, is a six-acre park that opened in 2011 and has spurned more than $400 million in private development. The park hosts more than 200 free events each year.

German Village and Schiller Park

Half & Quarter Marathon, Columbus Promise 5K, Miles 1-2

Originally built by German settlers in the mid-1800s, German Village features restored brick houses and shops with streets and sidewalks full of historic charm. The neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is one of the largest privately restored neighborhoods in the United States. At the center is Schiller Park. The city’s second oldest park was established in 1857 and is named for famous German poet Friedrich von Schiller.

Greater Columbus Convention Center and Goodale Park

Half & Quarter Marathon, Miles 4-5

The city’s iconic convention center was designed by famed architect Peter Eisenman and opened in 1993. It was expanded in 1999 and underwent a major renovation in 2016. The Greater Columbus Convention hosts nearly every major event that comes to the City of Columbus. Goodale Park, the city’s oldest public park,

was donated to the City of Columbus in 1851. For a few months during the Civil War, the park was a staging area for Union Troops known as Camp Jackson. The park hosts ComFest, a free, non-corporate music and arts festival held in the park in each June.

The Ohio State University

and Gateway - University District

Half Marathon, Mile 7-9

The Ohio State University is a land-grant university that was founded in 1870 and is one of the largest universities in the United States with approximately 60,000 students on its main campus. The Half Marathon course goes past The Oval, an 11-acre park that is one of the most recognizable spots on campus. Gateway - University District is a mixed-use residential district featuring restaurants and retail on the on the southern end of the Ohio State campus.

Ohio Stadium

Half Marathon, Mile 8½ -9

The world-renowned home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, Ohio Stadium opened in 1922 with a then incomprehensible capacity of 66, 210 at a cost of $1.49 million. Today the stadium, also known as the Horseshoe or simply the ‘Shoe, sells all 102,802 seats on fall Saturdays as fans come from near and far to watch their beloved Buckeyes.

Schottenstein Center

Half Marathon, Mile 9

The Schottenstein Center, which includes Value City Arena, became the city’s first multi-purpose arena when it opened its doors in November 1998. The arena is home to the Ohio State men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s ice hockey team, concerts and other special events. The arena seats 18,809 for basketball and is the largest arena in the Big Ten Conference.

Nationwide Arena & Arena District

Half Marathon, Mile 12

Columbus Promise 5K, Mile 2

Nationwide Arena has been home to the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League since September 2000. The arena, which also hosts concerts and family events, sits at the heart of the Arena District, one of the city’s hottest entertainment districts that was built through a unique partnership between Nationwide Realty Investors and the City of Columbus.

Ohio Statehouse

Half Marathon, Mile 13

Quarter Marathon, Mile 6.4

Columbus Promise 5K, Mile 3

Built between 1839 and 1861, the Ohio Statehouse is one of the oldest working statehouses in the United States. The Greek Revival building is at the heart of Capitol Square in downtown Columbus and houses the Ohio General Assembly and ceremonial offices for the state’s governor, lieutenant governor, treasurer and auditor.

PATH TO ACHIEVMENT

Running has a unique way of bringing people together. For Danielle X Sturgeon and Desmonde X Bennett, it has created an incredible friendship built on trust, encouragement, and a shared passion for the sport.

Their journey began last summer when Danielle, a visually impaired runner, moved to Columbus and was looking for a guide runner in local running groups to navigate a new community and continue her active lifestyle. Desmonde felt called to Danielle’s story and the two not only became running partners but close friends.

After that, Danielle connected with several guides who help her train, and together they have been setting and conquering new goals.

With Desmonde guiding and encouraging her, Danielle ran her first race at the Oktoberfest Meiler Vier in September 2024. Though initially nervous about navigating the crowds, the support from fellow runners and walkers made it a positive experience. Danielle then set a new goal—a turkey trot—and achieved it by completing the Flying Feather Four Miler.

As an experienced runner, Desmonde has discovered a different side of running —one that focuses on mentorship, teamwork, and setting new goals beyond personal records.

Now, fueled by their partnership and the support of the Columbus running community, Danielle and Desmonde are taking on their biggest goal yet: the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon—Danielle’s first half marathon!

SPORTS MEDICINE

EVERY RUNNER DESERVES

Before After RUN TIPS the race the race Race day

+ Preview the race route. Knowing the route ahead of time allows you to prepare mentally and physically for your race. Take note of medical and refueling stations, and drink options along the course.

+ Be prepared. Lay out your gear the night before and fill out the details on your race bib. Make sure all of your devices (watch, phone, headphones) are charged up and ready to go.

+ Wear layers. Choose items to stay warm and dry with layers of clothing you aren’t afraid to toss.

+ Follow the 15-degree rule: Dress for your run like it’s 15 degrees warmer than the current temperature.

+ Fuel up! Eat breakfast before arriving at the race. Choose easy-to-digest carb-rich foods with a little protein and choose foods you’ve eaten while training. Eat a simple-carb snack 15-30 minutes before the race gun goes off. While in the corral, sip on a sports drink and get some final fuel with graham crackers, a banana, or sports gel. Again, stick with what you’ve trained with.

+ Race day isn’t the time to try something new. Stick with the clothes, shoes and foods you know.

+ Pick a parking lot or bus route. There’s a map on the race website

+ Relax, stretch and smile! It took a lot of hard work to get here today. Enjoy the moment!

+ Use adhesive bandages or balm to prevent chafing. The medical stations will have petroleum jelly.

+ Stay hydrated. Refueling stations are designed to move runners along quickly.

+ If you see a runner in distress, alert medical personnel along the course.

+ Warning flags will be flying at each refueling station. If they’re not green, stay alert and follow instructions.

+ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drinking water or sports drinks will help you recover.

+ Take a victory stretch! Proper stretching will help with your recovery. OhioHealth personnel at the stretching and cooling tent are ready to help.

OHIOHEALTH MOBILE

PROGRAM

Running has always been more than just a sport to Laurie Bilovesky, it’s been her community, her source of strength and a constant throughout life’s challenges. This year, as she lines up for the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon, the race holds even greater meaning. As a breast cancer survivor, she’s running to inspire others facing their own battles.

During her cancer treatment at OhioHealth, which included a double mastectomy, radiation and ongoing hormone therapy, Laurie never stopped moving. Running and strength training became her way to reclaim control. As a longtime pacer for Fleet Feet Columbus Marathoners in Training (MIT) program and the M3S Sports Cap City & Fleet Feet Pace Team Powered by On, she was surrounded by friends from the running community who were there for her when she needed it most. “They showed up for me in ways I never expected. I never felt like I was alone in this community at all,” Laurie said.

Now in remission, Laurie is returning to the Cap City race with a renewed sense of purpose. “Crossing that finish line is a statement. I can still do this, and my life didn’t have to change because of a diagnosis,” she said. Early detection made all the difference for Laurie. A routine screening caught her cancer early, allowing her to start treatment quickly and continue doing what she loves. But she knows not everyone has that same access to care.

A portion of each race registration for the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon will go to support the OhioHealth Foundation. The Foundation will use those dollars to provide funding for OhioHealth’s Mobile Mammography Program, which brings vital breast cancer screenings directly to women in their communities. This service ensures that women who might otherwise face barriers to care can access life-saving screenings.

“There are so many women who are afraid to get screened, afraid to hear what I heard,” Laurie said. “The more we can make screenings accessible, the better. If we can bring it to them and make it easier, it will go a long way in catching cancer earlier.”

For nearly a decade, the OhioHealth Mobile Mammography Program has been offering mammograms to women across the state, covering more than 50 counties with three mobile units. Traveling to care sites, school grounds, community fairs and employer locations, in fiscal year 2024, the units provided more than 4,400 mammograms.

“Having a dedicated fund for mobile mammography means we can advance OhioHealth’s commitment toward bringing vital breast health screenings to women who may be unable to access them due to financial limitations or barriers to transportation”, said Karen Morrison, president, OhioHealth Foundation and senior vice president, OhioHealth. “The OhioHealth Foundation is grateful to be the benefitting charity of this incredible race.”

For Laurie, race day serves as a reminder of the determination that helped her through her journey, and it’s a celebration of everyone striving toward their own finish lines, both on and off the course. “When I’m pacing, I always tell runners, ‘You’ve been with me too long, go finish strong!’” she said. “Watching them push through, cross that line and realize what they’ve achieved is the best feeling in the world.”
