In A Place in History, former BBC journalist and latterly Director of the National Media Museum, Colin Philpott, takes us on a journey of discovery around Britain to places of political, cultural and social significance, as well as places immortalised by a single incident. The author taps into our fascination with a sense of place and our need to walk on the ground where history was made and to discover what happened next. Largely the history of ordinary places touched by extraordinary events, the book examines what happened, how the enduring legacies of these events have shocked and shaped our country but also looks at the longerterm impact of events on places once the cameras stopped rolling and the news crews moved on to the next story. The places and events featured in A Place in History include the Aberfan Disaster, the Lockerbie bombing, serial killer doctor Harold Shipman’s surgery, the scene of Concorde’s first flight, the birthplace of The Beatles, a hotel that slid into the sea, the ward where the world’s first test-tube baby was born, the spot where Pickles the dog discovered the stolen World Cup and the place where a snail in a bottle made legal history.
