New Dental Procedure is changing the lives of the over 55s in the UK A whole new set of teeth in one appointment…

T

housands of people across the

UK have already benefited from an extraordinary procedure that permits the placement of 4 dental implants and a fixed bridge in as little as one appointment. In its most extraordinary application an entire mouthful of teeth may be replaced with implants and non-removable set of new teeth in as little as an hour. This procedure is called “All-on-4”.

All patients leave our practice at the end of their treatment with: • Improved functionality – up to 90% • Greatly improved appearance of their teeth resulting in their confidence being significantly increased. • This life changing procedure resulting in them no longer having to wear a denture. Patients who benefit most from this revolutionary and highly sophisticated system

are those who already have dentures or with teeth so compromised, they have no option but to lose them and then select from several lessthan-desirable scenarios. If you’ve suffered the agony and embarrassment of a serious degenerative oral condition, your suffering is over. There’s simply never been a better time than today to correct the problem and start living life more fully. Edinburgh Dental Specialists have been providing dental implant supported restorations for over 15 years and is at the forefront of the “All-on-4” procedure. We work with your existing Dentist to ensure you receive the highest levels of patient care. Please call our friendly reception team today and we will explain how to book your ‘Free Consultation’ with one of our GDC registered Special Clinicians.

We are looking... ...to introduce regular retirement pages where readers can share their tips and thoughts to make retirement more fun and interesting!!! Send us your views and tips to feedback@55life.co.uk and we will share them with our readers. Accompanying photos welcome too.

Enjoying retirement More than 72% of over 50s living in Scotland believe they have earned the right to enjoy their retirement, according to a recent survey by the UK’s leading retirement property developer, McCarthy & Stone. A lifetime of hard work, raising the next generation and paying into the system all featured highly as reasons why the over 50s felt their retirement years should be their own to enjoy. And when it came to making the most out of later life, travel (28%), increased leisure time (25%) and spending more time with family (13%) topped the wish list of respondents living in Scotland. But while many are looking forward to a more leisurely pace to life, 33% in the region felt anxious about their retirement years, as they faced the realities of getting older. More than 64% said they were worried about financial constraints, 24% felt they would have a reduced sense of purpose and 29% feared they’d become lonely and isolated.

Use Your Skills to Pay the Bills Older readers from Edinburgh may remember a rather staid, dimly lit shop window at 137 George Street, containing a modest display of knitted and embroidered goods (I seem to recall lots of tea cosies and traycloths!) which were offered for sale by the Royal Edinburgh Repository and Self Aid Society for Gentlewomen. The Society (founded 1893) and the shop have been relocated and rejuvenated: The Treasure Trove, situated at 23A Castle Street, is an Aladdin’s Cave of gorgeous handmade goods and delicious home produce. The jewellery and the woolly hats, scarves and gloves are not just stylish and colourful but could be described as funky young fashion, meaning that The Treasure Trove’s customers range from teenage upwards and its shop window won 2nd prize in a citywide Christmas Windows competition last year.

New Automatic Fall Protection Alarm A new device, manufactured in the UK, could save hundreds of lives and save the NHS millions of pounds. The pendant can detect pressure, acceleration and orientation to determine if a fall has taken place. The base unit then automatically dials the response centre and an operator uses the powerful loud speaker to talk to the person or arrange appropriate help. The alarm also activates if lack of movement suggests the wearer has taken it off. The manufacturers hope the unit will eventually replace traditional red button pendant alarms, which are not always pressed even when the wearer is certain they have pushed it. Knowing help will soon arrive whether they have pressed a button or not offers peace of mind to wearers and carers alike. The ™iVi pendant can be ordered through a Local Authority, or direct from Tunstall, as part of a monitoring service. For more information or to request a brochure please visit: www.tunstall.com or call 01977 661234 or email: enquiries@tunstall.com

An unusual and much appreciated backroom service is that customers can bring in their own material to be smocked, or a pattern and wool for items to be knitted, or even moth holes repaired! In years gone by people used to bring in gents’ shirt collars to be turned but nowadays nobody asks for this particular service. The Society’s charitable aims still underpin everything that goes on at 23A Castle Street: a registered charity, its purpose is to assist those of limited means to achieve an independent livelihood by promoting the sale of their own handiwork. Anyone wishing information about the Royal Edinburgh Repository and Self Aid Society is invited to ring 0131 220 1187 or email shop@selfaidsociety.co.uk

Over 65s Scots growing faster Census figures released by the National Register of Scotland have revealed that for the first time the number of Scots aged over 65 is greater than those under 15, and there are now 230000 Scots aged over 80, compared to 193000 ten years ago; a 19% increase. The figures also show that 19% of the population of the Highland region is over 65 in comparison to the national average of 17%. Age Scotland spokesman Lindsay Scott welcomed this development saying: “The confirmation of increasing numbers of older people in Highland should not be viewed as a problem, especially since we have had plenty advance warning about the changing demographic right across Scotland. “Our ageing population is growing and it brings with it many benefits, with older people increasingly becoming full and active contributors to the life of their communities and growing numbers of local voluntary activities supported by those in later life.”

The charity that saves lives at sea - find out more about the RNLI

P

aul Harrison and his son Sean were looking forward to their trip in a motorboat up Scotland’s east coast to Peterhead. But their dream of a leisurely passage was shattered when the steering gear failed and their boat was thrown onto rocks in the middle of the night in rough seas near Anstruther. They were about to abandon the boat when RNLI volunteers from Anstruther arrived, carried out an extremely risky rescue, brought them ashore, gave them clothes and put them up for the night. Now helmsman Barry Gourlay has been presented with a rare accolade, the RNLI Bronze Medal for Gallantry, with crew members Euan Hoggan and Becci Jewell receiving the Thanks of the Instituition on vellum. Their bravery, determination and teamwork saved two lives that night. But to make that rescue happen, there was a team of volunteers working behind the scenes throughout the night, launching and recovering the lifeboat, refuelling it and washing it down and making the inshore boat ready for the next rescue 24/7, 365 days a year. Also, loyal fundraisers ensure that it is not just Anstruther but that the rest of Scotland have lifeboats, equipment and superb training to ensure the volunteers remain safe when they go to save someone else’s life. Today the charity has 54 lifeboats based at 46 lifeboat stations in Scotland, ready to launch at any time, in all weathers, to go to the aid of those in distress up to 100 nautical miles from the coast. In addition the RNLI operates a Flood Rescue Team in Scotland which is made up of around 30 volunteers, ready to deploy anywhere in the country.

6

Issue 12: Summer 2013

The types of rescues are extremely variable. A crew could be hauling a dog to safety after the animal falls down a cliff while chasing a seagull (they rescue animals otherwise their owners put their own lives in danger while trying to save their pet), and then going out to rescue oil rig workers from a helicopter ditched in the North Sea. A fire on a boat, a person cut off by tide, recovering a dead body, taking a sick passenger off a cruise ship – volunteers have to be trained in all types of scenarios. The RNLI has officially opened the first new Scottish allweather lifeboat station for over 20 years – Leverburgh was opened on the Isle of Harris to cover the Sound of Harris,

Do you have sight loss or know someone who has?

I

f yes, and if you would like to meet other people experiencing similar difficulties and find out what services are available to you, then RNIB Scotland’s Looking Forward programme is for you.

Looking Forward is for people who have been diagnosed with sight loss. It offers an opportunity to meet other people, talk about your experiences of living with sight loss, and share ideas. The programme consists of four sessions, which cover everything from looking and feeling good to useful aids and equipment and making the most of your leisure time. You can also meet people from local services who can give you advice about living with sight loss. Over 98 per cent of people who have attended Looking Forward have loved it. The sessions are free, refreshments are provided, and RNIB Scotland can help with transport to and from the sessions. For more information about the Looking Forward programme in Greater Glasgow, contact Shona Spence on 07825 282 544 or at shona.spence@rnib.org.uk

an area previously only covered by stations as far away as Stornoway and Barra. Now it is aiming to open an inshore lifeboat station at Stonehaven to fill a gap after the Maritime Rescue Institute, which operated lifeboats, closed. The lifeboat fleet has been recently been updated , replacing the Atlantic 75 lifeboats with the new Atlantic 85, each costing more than £200,000. Tighnabruaich, Largs, Kyle of Lochalsh and Queensferry recently upgraded their boats. The 85 is larger and faster than the 75, it can carry a crew of four rather than three and it is fitted with radar and VHF direction finding equipment. Improvements have also been made to lifeboat station buildings. Montrose now has a new station, closer to the community, Queensferry has an eye-catching building underneath the Forth Rail Bridge, and the RNLI is building a new station on Islay. Meanwhile, a rescue by Fraserburgh lifeboat last year marked the RNLI’s 140,000 life saved since it was established in 1824. The RNLI depends on voluntary contributions to fund its search and rescue service and the commitment and dedication of its volunteer crew members. In Scotland there are 842 crew, 363 station management, 73 shore helpers, and 2,264 fundraising volunteers. If you would like to volunteer please call 01202 663234 or look on the internet: www.rnli.org/volunteerwithus

Statistics • In 2012 the RNLI rescued a record 1,055 people in Scotland. • Lifeboats were launched for 1,008 shouts. • Broughty Ferry (Dundee) was the busiest station with 103 launches. • More than 10,670 hours were spent at sea on shouts. • Nearly 4,800 hours were spent at sea on exercise.

Looking Forward programmes also run in other areas and you can obtain details from RNIB Scotland on 0131 652 3140 or at rnibscotland@rnib.org.uk

Skills Helping Scottish Over 50s Explore Self-Employment

T

he Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise (The Prince’s Initiative) is the only national organisation dedicated to supporting business creation by the over 50 entrepreneur.

The charity was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in response to the letters he was receiving from mature people desperate to find work, but unable to find anyone to employ them - because of their age. Over the last year, total UK employment has been steadily increasing, which is something to celebrate. However, the unemployment figures have been stubbornly high and April’s statistics from the Office for National Statistics took a turn for the worse as total unemployment in the UK passed the 2.5 million mark. Unemployment and creating new opportunities is one of the toughest issues for any Government to deal with. Naturally, a lot of attention is being focused on young people, especially when you consider that there are 68,000 18 to 24 year olds in Scotland without a job. This is a whole generation of people who are struggling to get on the first rung of the employment ladder. While the situation facing young people is lamentable, at The Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise (The Prince’s Initiative) we would like to shift some of that focus on the situation facing the over 50s. If we take a closer look at the figures, there has been a healthy rise in the employment rate for the over 50s in Scotland and there are around 728,000 in this age group who are employed in the UK. Nonetheless, there are still more than 33,000 unemployed over 50s in Scotland and this number is only going to rise as people are living longer and will therefore have to work longer. One area for concern, for example, is the amount of mature people in Scotland claiming employment-related benefits. Currently, there are more 18 to 24-year-olds claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) compared to the over 50s but that there are around 8,600 over 50s claiming JSA for more than 12 months, compared to 6,900 long-term young claimants. This shows that young people who start claiming JSA are more likely to get off this benefit compared to people over the age 50. Clearly things are tough for the over 50s in the job market but it’s not all doom and gloom and at The Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise (The Prince’s Initiative), we like to think that there is a viable alternative and that is self-employment. There are 4.2 million self-employed workers nationwide and it is older people who have made a significant contribution to these numbers, with 1.4m in the 50 to 64-year-old age bracket and 345,000 people aged 65 and above. In total, there are 299,000 self-employed workers in Scotland and this has increased by 28,000 (10%) between 2008 and 2012. This demonstrates that the over 50s can explore other options and starting a business might be a viable route into sustainable employment for the 33,000 50 to 64-year-olds in Scotland who are unemployed. At The Prince’s Initiative we help people over the age of 50, who are unemployed or facing the prospect of redundancy, explore the possibility of setting-up their own business.

Issue 12: Summer 2013

We recently took our first steps in Scotland and George Smith, our Scotland Regional Manager, has been busy driving awareness, creating partnerships, as well as organising business training courses in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The business training courses are a great way for people over the age of 50 to meet individuals who are in a similar situation and are keen to learn the essential skills needed to set-up a viable and sustainable business, such as how to research the market, prepare accounts and how to write a successful plan. George is looking to build more relations in Scotland and would like to bring the business training courses to places other than Edinburgh and Glasgow where over 50s would like to explore the possibility of setting up their own business. Kenmore Hotel Review The Square, Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland PH15 2NU 01887 830 205, www.kenmoreluxurylodges.com By Jen Nash

T

he Kenmore luxury lodges was for us, an undiscovered gem. Situated on the Eastern shore of Loch Tay amidst the magnificent mountains of Highland Perthshire, Kenmore is a picture postcard village steeped in history, and famed for its choice of outdoor pursuits and Scottish hospitality. In 2011, The Kenmore Hotel, which is Scotland’s oldest inn, was taken over by the award winning Aurora Group who set about converting the pretty white-painted cottages in the village into five star self-catering luxury lodges. Boasting boutique style bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens, some lodges have hot tubs, others have balconies and private gardens and breathtaking views over Loch Tay.

There was a good size twin room and large master bedroom with a king size leather bed. The chrome and granite kitchen was well-equipped and of exceptional quality. Double patio doors led out to a generously sized hot tub and private courtyard garden were we enjoyed our welcome drinks, which along with our welcome pack was a very nice touch. The lodges have everything you could wish for and dining in was easy and a pleasure. However, The Grill Room at The Kenmore Hotel, just a stone’s throw from our cottage, proved an irresistible choice on more than one of the evenings that we spent there! The restaurant has wonderful terrace views over the Tay and outstanding menus serving an inspiring adaptation of grill specialties, using high-quality locally sourced produce and offering seasonally inspired dishes. The highlight for us, was the chateaubriand for 2, which was cooked to perfection on an Inka charcoal grill and accompanied with a delicious serving of hand cut chips, portobello mushrooms, and confit of tomato. You can also dine in The Poet’s bar and the Boar’s Head veranda– perfect for a summer’s day. There is great walking in the area, golf and some of the best fishing beats in Scotland, not to mention a wide variety of other sporting activities on the doorstep. If that doesn’t float your boat then there are also lots of interesting excursions and attractions nearby and Aberfeldy, Killin, Perth and Pitlochry are all within easy driving of Kenmore. One thing is for sure, we will be back!

We stayed in Molly’s cottage, a chic retreat complete with luxury bed linens, fluffy towels, power showers, and flat screen televisions. The cottage was immaculately presented, with a high standard of design and quality furnishing and fittings - far superior than other luxury rental properties we have experienced – and gloriously warm too.

Kenmore Current Rates:

The lounge was comfortable with a wood burning stove and more than enough wood for the duration of our stay, along with a selection of DVDs, magazines, and satellite TV. Upstairs, the bathroom was contemporary in style and well proportioned.

ewar’s World of Whisky at the Aberfeldy Distillery, Perthshire, has unveiled an exciting new blending experience at the spiritual home of DEWAR’S® True Scotch. This exclusive new offering provides visitors the opportunity to create their own Experimental Batch of Blended Scotch Whisky within the atmospheric heritage centre at Aberfeldy. Blending is considered an art form, combining whiskies from different distilleries to create a perfectly balanced taste with a complex flavour profile, greater than the sum of its parts. Following a guided tour of Aberfeldy’s traditional working distillery, those undertaking the premium Blender’s Tour will be invited to join a masterclass in the new blending room. With a tutored sensory session exploring the many flavour profiles and regional whisky characteristics of Scotch, the tour will culminate in the creation of a bespoke blend, created by the visitor to take home. Please allow one and a half hours for your visit with additional time for your blending session. Please note: Aberfeldy is a working distillery and visitors are advised that sensible shoes (no open toes or high heels) must be worn on the distillery tour. O An event to drink to... Scotch Whisky: From Grain to Glass

Mitchell Library, Glasgow - Until 31 July 2013 The Scotch Whisky: From Grain to Glass exhibition created by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) brings together an array of images and artefacts from Scotch Whisky producers and enthusiasts. Many items on display have been stored in archives and personal collections until their inclusion in this exhibition. Scotch Whisky’s rich past is showcased, highlighting its position as an iconic Scottish product and demonstrating how vital Scotch Whisky is to the country’s economy and society. Visitors will also learn everything from how Scotch Whisky is made to how it is marketed and exported. The exhibition explains, through images and words, how the “What is Whisky?” debate of the early 20th century led to a Royal Commission report which helped establish the modern day Scotch Whisky industry.

Restaurant Review

Chop Chop, Edinburgh 76 Commercial Quay, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6LX 0800 999 8118 www.chop-chop.co.uk info@chop-chop.co.uk by James Patrick

W

hen Gordon Ramsay’s ‘F Word’ TV show appealed for nominations for the UK’s Best Local Restaurant they received 10,000 nominations. Chop Chop Edinburgh was one of just 18 that made it through to the televised finals. Jian Wang made quite an impression on viewers and critics alike as she brought her specialty jiao zi or Chinese dumplings to a wider audience. Jian sells her jiao szhi to many Chinese supermarkets throughout the UK as well as to P&O cruise lines. There are now two Chop Chop restaurants in Edinburgh, in Leith and Haymarket, and their famous loyalty scheme has now attracted an incredible 15,000 members. We visited the newer Chop Chop Leith on a Saturday night to find the popular restaurant packed full and buzzing with a lively atmosphere and friendly, attentive waiters flowing back and forth to the kitchen. If you’ve never visited before they recommend you choose the unlimited banquet option. At £20 per person they bring you a wide selection of mouth-watering dishes, but the larger your party the wider choice you can enjoy. The idea is perhaps like Tapas, or a tasting menu where you eat small quantities with a range of flavours. The first of 18 dishes arrived less than two minutes after we’d ordered (which was itself a novelty!) and the rest arrived after suitable intervals. This was unexpectedly exciting not quite knowing what was coming next heightened the sense of anticipation. Then, and this is what Chop Chop is famous for, once you have finished all of the plates you can re-oder your favourites all over again. And again! (at no extra cost). It’s an extremely satisfying concept, as you’re never worried about one

16

Issue 12: Summer 2013

of your friends hogging all the tastiest dishes. (You know who they are!) Also, the refills arrive in ever decreasing quantities, which ensures you don’t feel like a complete glutton and there’s no wastage. Every person has exactly enough to eat. Jian and her husband popped out to explain the Chop Chop ethos which is to focus on rural food from northern China rather than the urban Hong Kong style dishes we are mostly used to in the UK. Jian returns to northern China every year on a neverending quest to discover new healthy and irresistible dishes from the region. So out of all the dishes they served to us in our ‘Unlimited Banquet for Six’ only perhaps three were familiar classics but these were outstanding too. Our party enjoyed a fabulous meal, full of vibrant flavours as well as subtle delicate touches. Above all, the banqueting option allows you to taste from a much wider range of dishes, many quite unfamiliar, than you might ordinarily have picked. We particularly enjoyed the pan fried chilli beef dumplings, the chicken and stir-fried potato, the northern fish broth and the crispy northern beef which I could have happily picked away on all night long. For me this was the best meal we’ve had this year and we’ll certainly make an effort to come again. Chop Chop is Scotland’s only Chinese restaurant with an AA rosette and is extremely popular with locals so book early. (Also, don’t be late and don’t be early. It’s ok there’s plenty of pubs nearby). They do takeaways as well. Fortunately, Leith hasn’t quite succumbed to Edinburgh’s hyper expensive city centre parking contagion and we parked right outside the restaurant on Commercial St. Drive to Leith via the bypass and you can avoid the city altogether or park easily at the Ocean Terminal where Brittania is moored and make a day of it shopping or at the cinema.

Trust Housing Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

T

rust Housing Association has been successfully delivering housing and support services for 40 years, remaining stable and reliable even in these uncertain times. Providing security and peace of mind, knowing that a high quality service and working in partnership with tenants is the key to success. This is why Trust is holding celebrations from May to August 2013, to involve as many tenants as possible. Over 60 developments across Scotland have actively involved their tenants to come up with an event that suits their needs, from Tea Parties, Country and Western, Ruby Balls and 1970’s Themed Fancy Dress Events. Many of the developments are inviting local schools, local businesses, MSP’s and Local Councillors.

Bearsden is only one of the many events and activities that are part of the 40th anniversary celebrations. The Association has also produced a DVD to showcase the services they deliver and will be holding celebrations with office based staff.

Trust’s first development at Bearsden held their party on the 15th May. Pupils from a local school, Mosshead Primary School, sang for tenants and guests and with great excitement released 40 red balloons to signify each year that Trust has been established.

Bob McDougall, CEO hopes the 40th celebrations will help dispel some misconceptions about what Trust does: ‘There is a tendency sometimes for people to think that Trust just provides accommodation, it’s all about bricks and mortar. It’s not, rather it’s about helping people live their lives the way they want. The property side is second to our primary aim of helping people make the most of their lives. This is why each development has chosen their own event, and tailored it to meet the needs of the tenants who live there.’

The corridors at Bearsden were littered with 1970’s memorabilia, including a sweetie shop, a wedding dress from 1973 and a Chopper bike. Tenant’s happily participated and shared photos of themselves from the 1970’s with a story about their life before Trust. One the guests on the day described the party as: ‘Such a friendly, fun and colourful event, even the sun shone!’.

Bob also hopes that the 40th celebrations will highlight how much fun and laughter is present at Trust’s developments. ‘Our developments are not what people might typically think, we don’t provide retirement homes, many of our tenants have active social lives and enjoy living as part of a thriving community. The fact that 63 developments are participating in the celebrations reinforces that this is the case.’

Retirement Living

Releasing Equity from your Home Is it right for you? By Stephen Whitby, Chartered Financial Planner. Accredited by SOLLA, the Society of Later Life Advisers.

I

f you own your own home and have no mortgage or other debt on it (or the debt is lower than the value) then you are said to have “equity” in your home. With the rise in property prices over recent decades a significant number of those at or beyond retirement now find themselves in this position. For many it is the only substantial asset they have. Their savings or other investments may be small in comparison to the equity in their home or even nonexistent! It is therefore not surprising to learn that there is a demand for equity release.

What is equity release? Put simply it is a way for people of generally 55 and over to unlock some cash from their home without having to move. In most cases this involves a long term loan called a Lifetime Mortgage. The person retains ownership of all of their property. An alternative but less popular method is a Home Reversion Plan where ownership of a part of the property is transferred from the home owner to the plan provider. Before considering equity release other options should be explored fully. If you have separate assets in the bank or elsewhere these could be used first. You could consider downsizing, which in many cases will provide a surplus of cash. However, if staying in your own home is of paramount importance then you could consider raising income by renting out rooms. For the majority of people this is not a viable option. You could even borrow from family.

Why would people want to raise cash by equity release? Retirement should be an enjoyable time but many are worried about financing it. Some of the key uses of the monies raised are: • Paying for home improvements • Going on holiday • Giving financial help to family and friends • Clearing outstanding mortgage or other debts • Increasing regular income to pay bills or increase disposable income • To help fund Care in your own home

So how does a Lifetime Mortgage work? It is a long term loan, secured on the property and normally there are no monthly repayments. Instead the interest accumulates and is added to the loan. This overall debt is then repaid either on death, on moving or entering Long Term Care. This amount raised will naturally grow year on year and will impact on any inheritance but to counter this, the person will have been able to enjoy the money raised and improve his or her quality of life. Also remember that the person continues to be the homeowner and so benefits from any future rise in the property price. There are many providers of equity release schemes and they can be complex. The interest rate being charged is obviously important but there are many other factors such as the effect on other benefits or allowances you may be receiving that need to be taken into account. You should always consider taking professional financial advice before making any commitment. The Money Advice Service (the government supported resource) provides excellent information and also a guide “Equity Release Schemes” for those wanting to find out more. This can be found at the following link: www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/equity-release It is strongly advised that you discuss your Equity Release needs with a qualified Financial Adviser. Equity Release should not be considered in isolation and should be looked at as part of your overall financial situation in Later Life. A Society of Later Life Adviser (SOLLA) is ideally placed to help you with all your “Later Life” financial needs

s summer approaches it is without doubt that grandparents across Scotland will step in to help keep the children busy and spend time with the grandchildren so we’ve dedicated the next two pages to all our readers who are grandparents, there’s a selection of books from the Book Trust that are perfect for little ones, and some ideas for days out for all the family young and old.

Things to do...... in Perthshire Perthshire scenery is glorious and there’s lots to do outdoors in summer like walking, mountain biking as it really is a centre for outdoor adventures. Call Adventure Perthshire Hotline on 01887 829010 for more information and prices. For a more peaceful time try Loch Earn near Comrie which is nice for a family picnic and throwing stones. We particularly enjoyed Comrie’s Auchingarrich Wildlife Park with its Meerkats, Marmosets, Llamas, tame farm animals and a couple of very friendly Lemurs. Though the hatchery went down best with the youngest as they are allowed to handle the baby chicks and rabbits. www.auchingarrich.co.uk

in Fife The Bruce Festival in Dunfermline is a great day out with lots of horses and fire pits and people making medieval crafts and the like. Based in Pittencrieff Park overlooked by Dunfermline Abbey, the weekend offers a huge range of free entertainment including a medieval village, storytelling, jousting, battle re-enactments there is also a quality food and craft village featuring great Scottish and local produce. The event is free to attend and takes place from 11am-4pm each day. Also we’ve heard that St. Andrew’s Aquarium are getting new penguins so look out for details on that over the summer.

The Ten Best Picture Book Adventures to Enjoy with your Grandchildren.

For Grandparents

Compiled by Scottish illustrator Cate James for the Scottish Book Trust.

4. Rosie’s Walk Pat Hutchins This is my favourite book from my childhood. To the untrained eye, Rosie is off for a wander…but who is following her? I love the muted colours.

8. Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs Giles Andreae and Russell Ayto

5. Nature Alain Gree Not strictly speaking a tale of adventure, but definitely an encyclopaedia of all the ingredients necessary for an adventure outdoors. Absolutely gorgeous.

1. The Great Snortle Hunt Claire Freedman and Kate Hindley This adventure revolves around a spooky house and a scary monster, or does it? I always love Kate Hindley’s illustrations. Her characters are beautifully drawn and full of personality.

2. The Green Ship

This book is three stories in one, with all the best components of a perfect adventure. Maybe there are pirates and dinosaurs at the back of your art cupboard too?

9. South Patrick McDonnell A tale told without words. A birdie is left behind and tries to find his flock with the help of a cat with a big nose. I love the painted illustrations.

Quentin Blake Quentin Blake is my absolute hero. This story is a lovely childhood summer holiday adventure set aboard a very special ship.

6. Where the Wild Things Are Maurice Sendak A classic. Max is naughty, and he’s also not afraid of the wild things.

7. The Troll Julia Donaldson & David Roberts

3. The Way Back Home Oliver Jeffers Any book with aeroplanes, martians and a random penguin is going to be great. A beautiful tale of friendship and intergalactic rescue.

The Troll accidentally stows away on a pirate ship. Luckily for him, he is an excellent cook! This book has a great layout, and beautiful illustrations with plenty of detail.

10. The Snowman Raymond Briggs Everyone knows The Snowman. I like to look at Raymond Briggs’ illustrations all year round, not just at Christmas.

David Pearson Talks David Pearson is a retired deputy head teacher from Glasgow. He has been a regular contributor to 55Life since it first started and below he is continuing his regular blog with us...let us know your thoughts on any of the subjects he covers... Well, it’s official. I’m a failure. I know this because The Independent told me so. They published the results of a survey by a coffee company which revealed the top 10 gadgets/ technology features that you must have in your home to be considered a “success” . Now we can all argue about what constitutes success, but whatever it might be, it’s a lot better than failure. Anyway I scanned the list and found I owned none of the listed items. I searched in vain for radio cassette player or electric toaster (a 4-slicer, no less), but they weren’t there. Well, massive trauma ensured. I fled upstairs, closed the curtains, jumped into bed, assumed the foetal position and turned the electric blanket up to 9. But then I decided to scrutinise the list one last time. And having done so I cheered up a bit. “Recorded music in every room in your house” – well, that’s all right. If I turn up the wireless in the living room real loud, I’ll swear you can hear it in the upstairs back room. So that’s one ticked off. “3D TV”. Hm. I check my manual. Yep, there we are: height, width, depth. That’s another one. And wait a minute – what about the Sinclair Spectrum nestling between the joists in my attic? I’m well on the way. Alan Sugar, watch your back. I must give a mention to the fabulous Phyllis Diller, the

American comedienne who died last year. She was not perhaps as well known as Joan Rivers, and I’m not sure she ever performed in Britain, but she was a very funny woman, and stars like Ellen de Generes have acknowledged the debt they owe her. I am tempted to include some of her gags here but please check them out on the internet. Just google “Phyliis Diller” and you’ll get pages of really funny one-liners. And if you search on YouTube you’ll find clips of her “roasting” people like Joan Collins and Ronald Regan. Go on, do it now. She’ll brighten up your day. One of the perks (hopefully) of doing this blog is that I will get to give a wee plug to music artistes who deserve to be more widely known, or perhaps rediscovered. And I’m going to do so now by introducing you to a wonderful singer/songwriter called Lesley Duncan. At one time she was hailed as “the English Carole King”. She died over 3 years ago and there are moves being made to have her back catalogue of 5 albums from the 70s re-released on CD. Her best known song is Love Song, which has been recorded by scores of artistes, including Olivia Newton-John, Marianne Faithfull and Neil Diamond. It is also one of the very few songs Elton John has recorded that he did not write himself – it’s on ‘Tumbleweed Connection’. You may without knowing it have Lesley’s voice in your album or CD collection. Because she was a noted session singer in the 60s, providing backing vocals for albums by Dusty Springfield, Michael Chapman, Pink Floyd and the aforementioned Mr John. She can be heard on the original London cast recording of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. Latterly she lived with her husband on Mull, and suffered from ill-health in her latter years. She was one of our very first female singer-songwriters. So if you like American artistes such as Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Sandy Denny, then you’d like Lesley Duncan. Check out the clips on Youtube. There’s very little footage of Lesley performing as she had dreadful stage fright. But her music is a joy. Meantime I’m going to have some toast (using my 4-slice toaster) and put one of Lesley’s LPs on my gramophone. See you next time.

Health & Wellbeing New treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis approved in Scotland

T

he Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) has recommended abatacept for use in early treatment for appropriate patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

In Scotland, up to 217,000 people are affected by RA, a condition which severely impacts on quality of life. It causes chronic pain, stiffness, swelling and fatigue due to the joint damage, making it difficult to move about freely. The largest ever study of RA patients of working age in Scotland carried out by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) found that more than half of RA patients had to give up work prematurely. Of these patients, more than half gave up work within only one year of diagnosis with 80 percent stopping work within six years. Early treatment can reduce joint damage and limit the impact of RA on a person’s quality of life. There are different medicines for the treatment of RA. Some aim to relieve symptoms and others help slow the progression of the condition. Abatacept is a treatment that reduces the signs and symptoms of RA, reduces the progression of joint damage and improves the physical function of adult patients with RA. Speak to your GP for more information.

This unique system which is based on yoga, remedial health exercises and movement, offers a complete approach to body fitness and mobility. The focus is on strengthening abdominal muscles to achieve ‘central control’ which provides the basis of good posture from which all movement can be performed safely and effectively. Health & Wellbeing better quality of life, for a lot longer. Ok, maybe you won’t feel like joining the commando bootcamps, but any activity that involves moving our joints, strengthening our muscles and keeping our hearts healthy will bring an array of benefits to our everyday life. Take the right steps and walk along the path a better health. Step 1 – chat with your doctor or health professional prior to starting any activity. Ascertain if there are any “no go” activities.

Older In Age Does Not Equal Older In Body By April Logan, Personal Training Scotland www.personaltrainingscotland.com

hen we hit our mature years, we often start to feel some of our joints getting a little creaky or our muscles a little tired. Why? Well the fact is our bodies are getting older and our joints have been holding our body together for the entire time we have been on the planet. But and this is a big BUT, we should not sit on our laurels and grow old gracefully. They say 50 is the new 40 and I totally agree with this. This is the prime of our life, so we want to keep our bodies in tip top shape, to ensure we enjoy the next 30 years. Research is continually proving that with regular exercise, we are living a much

Step 2 – speak to a fitness professional about a suitable programme of regular activities, so that it is tailored to your specific needs and reviewed regularly. Your fitness class instructor, gym instructor or personal trainer will be able to help. Step 3 – ensure you are getting a balanced combination of cardiovascular activity (the stuff that make you puff a bit) and muscle strengthening exercise (the ones that keep your body strong) at least twice a week. Muscle Strengthening – we want to work all the muscles in our body. Exercises using dumbbells, fitness bands and stability balls are great. Plus classes like Legs, Bums and Tums, Pilates and Yoga are gentle on joints but improve muscle strength. Cardiovascular Exercise – we do want to get a bit of a sweat on and feel a bit puffed, as this is what keeps the heart ticking away nicely. Swimming, cycling, walking and low impact aerobics are perfect, as they protect the joints, whilst you get a good workout. For people who have been running previously, there is no reason you can’t keep this going, but just consider running on softer surfaces when possible.

As always part of the equation to keeping healthy is looking after our diet. I have a plain rule that works a treat – half the plate is vegetables (dark greens, bright colours, cooked or fresh), quarter is lean meat or alternative protein (eggs, nuts, tofu, seeds) and quarter is a complex carbohydrate (wholegrain rice, wholemeal bread, sweet potato, quinoa, wholemeal pasta).

Talking Teeth Dental care advice and suggestions for new procedures now available and where to find them

Good Habits, Great Smile! by Louise Jordan, Permasoft

T

here are a lot of up sides to having a bright smile including making you appear younger and more attractive to people you meet. It’s also widely recognised that people are drawn to, and want to get to know, people who smile regularly, so it’s important to look after yours carefully. For a winning smile you need to be confident that you are doing the most you can to look after your teeth, gums and dentures if you wear them. We all know it is important to brush and floss your teeth when you get up in the morning and just before bed but did you know there are a couple of extra things you can do during the day to ensure your smile is at its best? When doing your next grocery shop try to incorporate foods with high calcium and vitamin content, such as nuts, dairy foods

Teeth in a Day? The All-on-4™ dental implant procedure - also known as ‘teeth in a day’, ‘same day teeth’ or the ‘same day smile’, is one of the most popular solutions available for those who would like to replace an entire arch of teeth permanently in one day. All-on-4™ will allow you to enjoy life to the full again. The system means that only 4 dental implants are needed to support a full arch of new teeth rather than the more usual 8-10 implants. This keeps costs down and saves time – hence the one day turnaround.

Told you don’t have enough bone for an implant? That may not be the case with All-on-4™. Once your x-rays have been taken, it may be that extra long dental implants can be offered if you don’t have enough bone available in your jaw. These extra long implants are called ‘Zygomatic’ implants and they can be anchored in your cheek bone. Dr Stuart Lutton of Ivy Dental Practice commented, “Allon-4™ really makes a difference to the lives of my patients.

and meats, which can all help to strengthen tooth enamel and fight gum disease. Cheese in particular helps to balance the pH in your mouth, produce more saliva and kill the bacteria that causes tooth cavities and gum disease. Fresh fruits like apples are also a great choice as they can help remove loose foods at the same time as cleaning the surface of your teeth. Try to avoid eating too many foods that stick to your teeth for prolonged periods, such as bananas and French fries. A common misconception is that brushing directly after an acidic meal (for example very sugary foods or citrus fruits) will help to reduce damage and enamel erosion; in reality, because acid weakens enamel, it’s best to wait half an hour to an hour before brushing to avoid weakening it any further. Try using a fluoride mouthwash after acidic foods or drinks then brushing 45 minutes later. If you can’t always brush your teeth between meals chewing sugarless gum is a good substitute. Chewing gum can helps remove food particles from between the teeth and increase saliva which naturally washes bacteria away and neutralizes acid. More important than any of the above is that you visit your dentist regularly for teeth cleaning and a general check-up. Remember to let your dentist know of any issues you have been experiencing so they can help assess any potential problems early and help you keep as many of your teeth looking as bright and healthy as possible for as long as possible. Some may not be aware of how depressing life can be with an uncomfortable denture or gaps in teeth. This new treatment will mean that more people can enjoy steak or crusty bread again!” Prices with finance can start as low as £120 per month.
