Dear Friends of Bicycles United, Two years ago when we started our magazine in Thailand, little did we know it was also the start of many new friendships. Not only did we make new friends across the 77 provinces in Thailand but we also found new friends across the globe spreading beyond sixty countries.

Editor Kris H.M. Gomeze

Through the many conversations with our readers we realized they wanted to know more and so we now bring to you Bicycles United Asia. With this we have now become Asian, when I say “Asian” we mean our focus is now more towards cycling in Asia as there are unaccountable cycling stories across Asia we want you to read about. With our original mission when creating Bicycles United we wanted to bring cyclists together no matter who they are and what they ride thus we developed our slogan: “It does not matter who you are, what bicycle you ride, what matters is you ride a bicycle” and indeed it has been well accepted with our readers or anyone who who came across it. So our mission continues, we want cyclists to keep making new friends wherever they will cycle to through the stories we tell so you know there will always be someone you can acquaint with and perhaps even find a life lifetime friend.

2015 Taipei Cycle d&i Award Winners: Verge X18 Bicycle “Customers asked for a bike that has the speed, riding geometry, and gearing of a traditional road bike but which folds for easy transport and storage,” said Eric Lin, Head Bicycle Product Manager at Tern. “It took a lot of engineering – and even more testing – but we’ve created a bike that delivers a true compact road bike experience.” From the sport-racing frame geometry and new hydroformed Tarsus fork, to the 28”– 109” gear inch drivetrain and ultra-strong 20” aero wheels, every detail on the Verge X18 has been selected to create a true road bike experience. Hand-built Kinetix Pro X Aero wheels feature exclusive alloy composition rims, a tall 42 mm profile,

and ultra-strong welded construction. The Sapim CXWing bladed spokes are custom forged. The Shimano Ultegra/ Capreo drivetrain delivers true road bike gear range with a 9-26 cassette while the front American Classic hub is lightest in class at only 58 grams. An additional unique feature is the Syntace VRO stem which allows riders to tune the reach and height of their handlebars for a customized riding position. Kinetix Pro X Wheels “The weight, durability and aerodynamics of our new Kinetix Pro X wheels is unmatched in the 20” category,” continued Lin. “And they aren’t too bad to look at either.” With high-profile 27 mm rims for strength and aerodynamics, Kinetix Pro X wheels are built with custom-forged Sapim straightpull aero spokes. The spokes are laced in a patented Rolf pairedspoke pattern featuring only 16 spokes/wheel. Custom designed front and rear hubs with precision CNC machined flanges deliver perfect spoke alignment. The 2015 Tour de France route at the ‘Palais des Congrès’ in Paris in front of more than 4,000 spectators. It was designed with the intention of breaking away from tradition. The plains, mountains and time trial are clearly included in the 102th edition... but in unprecedented proportions and with nuances susceptible of upsetting pre-established plans.

UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS WILL THE HOST OF THE GRAND START OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE 2015 In 2015, the Netherlands will host the Grand Start of the Tour de France for the sixth time. Utrecht, one of the cities which have done the most to foster a cycling culture will be the meeting point for the riders and fans to celebrate cycling in all its dimensions

The festivities started this morning at the residence of the Dutch ambassador to France in Paris. Bernard Hinault, Jan Janssen and Credit & Joop Zoetemelk, some of the distinguished Copyright: A.S.O. guests in attendance, then hopped onto a Thalys painted... The countdown has begun. There is a year, seven months and six days until the 102nd edition of the Tour de France kicks off from Utrecht. The fourth largest city in the Netherlands will be at the heart of the cycling world as well as its country. After bursting back onto the scene in July 2013 with Bauke Mollema (6th) and Laurens Ten Dam (13th), the Dutch armada will work hard to shine in front of the home crowds in the opening time trial of July 4. A 13.7 km pancake-flat course entirely within the city will decide who gets to wear the first yellow jersey of the 2015 Tour. The next

day, the peloton will congregate in front of Utrecht’s Exhibition Centre for the start of the first road race stage. Plenty of cards to play for the Dutch, who have not won a Tour stage since 2005. The roaring crowds will hope that one of their heroes can follow in the footsteps of Jan Janssen and Joop Zoetemelk, who won the Grande Boucle in 1968 and 1980, respectively. Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France: “The Netherlands is a cycling nation, one which has written quite a few remarkable chapters of the history of the Tour de France. Utrecht’s main attraction was the way it’s integrated cycling into its dayto-day life. Its natural and palpable relationship with cycling is quite simply an inspiration”. TRIBUTE

A Special Tribute To

Juan Francisco Guillermo 1967-2015

A cycling accident can happen at any moment, in any city, country or continent. Tragically when it ends in death does it hit us all but life goes on and we set out to continue our journey. We like to pay our tribute to Juan Francisco Guillermo who died tragically in Thailand. Juan, your mission is an inspiration to all and your spirit will live on. Rest in peace. Juan Francisco Guillermo from Chile, aged 48 died whilst cycling on his five year round the world journey that started in November 2010 and would have put him in the Guinness Book of Records cycling 250,000 km had he been able to complete his journey this year in November 2015. Sadly this was now not to be. He met his wife on his cycling expedition, they fell in love, married and together have a beautiful baby boy now aged 2. He continued his journey together with his wife and son. Not long before the accident occurred Juan Francisco Guillermo, his Singaporean wife Ng Poh Leng and their 2 year old son Lucas stopped at a police checkpoint in Khon Kaen Province, Phon district. He chatted with the police about his cycling journey before they took off to continue to ride together on to Nakhon Ratchasima. Juan Francisco Guillermo was hit by speeding pick up truck. He was thrown off his bicycle and died instantly, both his wife and son sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital. In February 2013 a British couple, Peter Root and Mary Thompson who had set off on their round the world cycling expedition since July 2011 was also killed by a pickup truck in a road accident in Chachoengsao, Thailand. Thailand’s Cycling Network has launched the “Stop Killing Cyclist” campaign in view of these tragic cycling accidents to make Thailand a safer country to ride. Thailand is one of the best countries in the world for cycling, more attention should be made to educate drivers about the safety of the roads and also about sharing the roads with bicycles. This is not just for cyclists but also for the pedestrians. Then again this problem is not just a problem for Thailand alone but it is also happening in many countries. It would be great if Thailand can take the lead to show how amazingly beautiful, amazingly wonderful and amazingly safe it can be for cyclists. 62

When I had first listed the contents for the Vol. 1 No. 1 issue of our Bicycle United Magazine in Thailand way back in January 2013, Tanin Rittavirun was a man I could not miss out to include. Personally I feel I have to include him again in our very first issue of Bicycles United Asia as Rit Bicycle, a Thai brand bicycle has proven to be a very sought after touring bicycle. Our caption for his story then was “Tanin Rittavirun Beyond Touring and Bicycles this time when I caught up with him once again in Bangkok we talked about his new business venture and endeavors due to the success of Rit Bicycle.

This map shows all 35 former train stations of the old Parenzana Railway. The route starts right at the Italian-Slovenian border in Trieste, and then runs through Slovenia before entering the most scenic part of the ride in Croatia. The Croatian part of the tour gives a detailed look at the beautiful Istria peninsula. 112
